Is it possible to disable USB ports on iMac?

I've got a pair of 27" iMacs which will be utilized as Flash Pro workstations by employees and subcontracted illustrators and animators. In the interests of security, specifically -- protecting my intellectual property (animated content), I'm interested in setting up these iMacs such that nobody can copy any files they're working on to an external hard drive, or upload the file as an attachment to a webmail account or to an external server.
It is my understanding that I can set up a standard account and via network preferences, disable the wireless, ethernet, and firewire functions, which could then only be reactivated by an admin account password. But it would appear there is no way to disable the USB ports. Is such a thing possible? Is there a way to disable the USB ports on an iMac or any Mac?
In the event there is no way to disable the USB ports, is there a way to prevent someone from copying files on this iMac to external hard drives or uploading files to webmail programs or servers offsite?
How do employers prevent employees and subcontractors from copying or sending intellectual property offsite?

Per Eric Ross's link above, it would appear that one can use Workgroup Manager from the Server Admin Tools, to manage user accounts even on a Standalone Computer -- not running on a network or utilizing the OSX Server Software -- as seen in the following statement from Eric's link:
MacInTouch Reader
"...   As an additition to Espen Koht's contribution, it should be mentioned that the 'Workgroup Manager' is part of the 'Server Admin Tools', which are distributed free of charge by Apple. Media access whether USB or Firewire for all users can be configured 'standalone' on each Mac computer by the user "Administrator"- it works!"
So I installed the Server Admin tools. According to the Workgroup Manager Help document, there appear to be two steps required to make the tools operational. First -- Setting Up an Administrator Computer and second -- Create a Directory Administrator Account. The Workgroup Manager Help document does not clearly explain how to configure a standalone computer for Workgroup Manager.
When I open the Workgroup Manager or Server Admin apps, I am presented with a window containing three fields that must be filled in. One is Address. The second is User Name. The third is Password. How do I determine the address? Do they mean IP address? What do I enter in the address field?
Regarding the Name and Password fields, do I enter the name and password of my admin account for this computer?... or use a completely different name and password?
Again the objective is to enable more comprehensive management and restrictions of Standard User accounts utilizing Workgroup Manager on a standalone computer.

  • What do you use to block/disable USB ports and CD/DVD drives?

I have been tasked with finding software that can disable USB ports not being used for keyboards & mica and CD/DVD devices.  At a previous job we used Sophos Enterprise console and it had that ability.  I currently use VIPRE Business Premium but I don't see where their products have the same capability.  So, what do you gals and guys use?

Most business leaders are always looking for new ways to put money back into their budgets. This is particularly true of small and midsize businesses, which have smaller budgets to begin with. For these companies, the prospect of saving on IT equipment can be especially attractive.Buying previously owned IT equipment can be a great way to achieve the savings that so many businesses are looking for, but it’s important that you take the time to learn exactly what you’re getting before you make such an investment. The terms “used” and “refurbished” are commonly used to describe previously owned IT equipment, but the two are not interchangeable. If you want to make sure the great deal you’re getting is really as great as you think it is, it’s important that you learn what the two terms mean, and how they’re different.Used Vs. • IPod Touch drawing too much power--disabling USB ports

    Hi there,
I have a brand new Macbook, just picked it up less than a week ago. I've been hooking up my 2nd gen iPod touch to it for a while without any problems, but suddenly I started to get an error message every time I plug it into my USB port:
"*Because a USB device was drawing too much power from your computer, one or more of your USB devices have been disabled.* To prevent damaging your computer, the USB device drawing too much power has been disabled. Other devices may also have been disabled. When you disconnect the device drawing too much power, your other USB devices will be enabled again."
I've been looking all over the internet for a solution to this and I can't find a thing--it's really frustrating since this laptop's brand new and I have no other way of charging my iPod.
My laptop is plugged in while I'm doing this. The error message is instant--it seems to pop up before I've even inserted the USB cable all the way. Also, for what it's worth, I just did a test and I get the error message just by plugging the USB in, even if it's completely unattached to anything.
Thanks, looking forward to a solution.

Had the same where as soon as i Plug my iPhone into the USB Port on my 2009 "Macbook Pro"
"Because a USB device was drawing too much power from your computer, one or more of your USB devices have been disabled. To prevent damaging your computer, the USB device drawing too much power has been disabled. Other devices may also have been disabled. When you disconnect the device drawing too much power, your other USB devices will be enabled again."
    (This is a Simple Fix)
    Just Change the USB Cable.
I Just Happened to have a New USB/iPod/iPhone Cable Laying Around, so i Connected it and "Voila" everything was back to Normal.

  • Disabled USB port

Recently, upon starting up my 2008 MacBook Pro, I received a message that said one of my USB ports (the right hand one) was disabled for using too much power. The message also said once whatever device was removed from the port (odd, because I think there never was a device attached to the right-hand port in the first place), it would re-enable the port.
However, it hasn't. Any idea how I can resuscitate this USB port? Because of this, I can no longer sync my iPod because using it with my USB music drive and a USB hub is too stressful for the computer.

    Hi
the port has stayed disabled, even after another restart?
reset PRAM & the SMC ? (just in case...)
You've run the apple hardware test, ?

  • MacBook(2009) disables USB ports!

I use a cooling pad for my 2009 macbook. All of a sudden now when I plug it in to my USB port it tells me the USB port is drawing too much power and it disabled it. (btw: I have it charging and it's at 99%)

The built in USB ports can only supply a limited amount of power. Try to draw any more than that and the Macbook protects itself by turning the ports off.
The way around this problem is to use a self powered USB hub.
You plug the hub into a wall outlet for power, and connect it to the Macbook with a USB cable for data. All your USB devices can now be plugged into the hub, and whatever power they need will be supplied by the hub not the Mac.
    Examples of powered USB hubs:

  • OEAP 600 - Possible to disable local ports 1-3?

I have a customer looking to deploy OEAP & wants to know if it possible to disable the local ports 1-3?  Reason being, they don't want the home user connecting devices & causing more support tickets to troubleshoot an Xbox or Google TV just b/c it's connected to a company provide AP/Switch.
I have read all the docs & it makes no mention of this.... I can see in 7.2 the ability to disable the local SSID but no mention of the ability to shutdown ports 1-3....
Also see support in 7.2 for Dual RLAN... but that still leaves 2 local ports.
    Thanks,
    Brandon

We found a way to disable the local ports.
    The command is
    config network oeap-600 local-network {enable | disable}
Here is the link to the documentation

    Edit:
Forgot to mention that I already tried following kernel parameters (acpi=routeirq, noirqdebug, pci=msi, irqpoll, irqfixup) of which only noirqdebug worked (as to say that IRQ #16 was not disables, so my keyboard did work), but which caused a decrease in graphics performance (low fps rates (shells refresh slowly), tearing).

ok, there are only 2 devices using IRQ 16
00:16.0 Communication controller: Intel Corporation 6 Series/C200 Series Chipset Family MEI Controller #1 (rev 04)
00:1a.0 USB controller: Intel Corporation 6 Series/C200 Series Chipset Family USB Enhanced Host Controller #2 (rev 05) (prog-if 20 [EHCI])
there are many reports about intel chipset systems having the same problem after kernel 2.6.38 / 2.6.39 .
you basically have 2 options :
    1. If you want to have all usb ports available:
test with the LTS kernel 2.6.32.48, verify it doesn't have those problems (99% sure)
stick to LTS-kernel atleast until the problem is solved in the mainline kernel
    2. Disable / don't use the problem ports.
your system has multiple USB controllers :
00:1a.0 USB controller: Intel Corporation 6 Series/C200 Series Chipset Family USB Enhanced Host Controller #2 (rev 05) (prog-if 20 [EHCI])
00:1d.0 USB controller: Intel Corporation 6 Series/C200 Series Chipset Family USB Enhanced Host Controller #1 (rev 05) (prog-if 20 [EHCI])
03:00.0 USB controller: NEC Corporation uPD720200 USB 3.0 Host Controller (rev 03) (prog-if 30 [XHCI])
test which / how many ports do work
If there are not enough usb ports working, your system has several pci express slots.
you could consider purchasing a pci express extension card with usb ports.
While it may use the same driver, it will get a different irq.

  • How do I reset or enable a disabled usb port on a macbook air 10.7.2

Ok, tried installing a thumb drive and a message says "too much power is being drawn, usb is disabled..."  Does anyone know how to reset or enable a disabled usb on a MBA?  Thanks

Reset PRAM & SMC several times with no luck.  Took it to the apple store and did a diagnostic...pass, but USB still does not work.  Genius says, USB hardware will need to be replaced...FREE (under warrantee).  It would have been $280 for labor and parts replacement.  Should be ready in 5-7 days.  Lessons learned, don't buy cheap USB thumb drive.

  • After update to 10.7 USB ports of iMac 2007 don't load iPhone 3G and iPad2

My iMac: 2007, 2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, white.
I use this machine regularly to sync my iPod, my iPhone 3G and my iPad2.
After update from OS X 10.6.8 to 10.7 the iPhone is not loaded. Usually even with starting the iMac,
after few seconds the attached iPhone makes the 'connected'-sound and starts loading. But this doesn't
happen anymore. So it is even not only an iTunes problem.
Systemsinformation recognizes iPhone and iPad, but iTunes (10.4) doesn't.
I made the same software update on my mid 2010 Macbook pro and checked using the iOS devices. This works fine.
What can I do to get my iMac working with the iOS devices again?

    Unfortunately completely no answer here.
Meantime status: Genius of Apple Store Hamburg told me to make a fresh install of Lion (10.7) and try again. So iMac is cleaned up, means partition deleted. Lion is installed from created installation USB device. Next step is testing the bug. Let's see.
At all it is said that there is completely no idea here in this forum.
Anyway I keep this thread up-to-date.

Has happened before and took forever to fix it. Nothing specific fixed it last time and nothing I know was the direct cause. Each time different OS, different location, different year, different cables etc etc.
Now, reset everything, moved everything, changed everything - still nothing. No USB ports work. iMac still has pop up "USB devices disabled..."

  • HDMI or USB Ports

I would like to use my LX835-D3210 to view online streaming on my HDTV. Is this possible with a USB Port? Apparently the HDMI port I have is for "in" only. Is that for video cameras? Is there a way to make it an "out" port?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

I don't know of any easy way to do it. It's possible in some round-about ways such as using an application to stream your desktop to another computer, and using that computer to connect to the TV, but it wouldn't be an elegant solution. The HDMI port is only an HDMI-in port.
