Is it possible to do a selective restore from itunes?

I had a wifi  issue on my iphone 4 issue after updating to IOS 6.0.1 - the wifi would no longer auto connect would not maintain a connection to any wifi broadcast. It seemd OK when no data was moving through it but dropped and reverted to 3G as soon as I would attempt any data transfer. Seems like a VERY common problem that also seems to have gone on unaddressed for quite some time. I tried every trick listed on numerous threads, and nothing worked. Finally took it into the local retailer, and they backed up my data, did a reset, then moved my data back. After losing my contacts, I also found that their reset did not fix this.
After rebuilding all my apps and contacts, I gave itunes a try. Saved a backup there, then did a reset via itunes, and voila - my wifi worked again. Tested for two days and had no issues, issue appeared to be resolved. Finally got comfortable enough to let itunes recover from the backup file, and as soon as I did the wifi started dropping its connection again just like before.
I have now reset the phone again, and manually rebuilt all my contacts and apps, and now have a working backup via the icloud.
Only problem is this, all my images and videos that were part of the itunes backup are still there, but doing a backup via itunes is going to bring my wifi issue back.
Does anyone know of a way to do a selective restore via itunes, where I can select images an videos only? If there is an option there, I sure can't find it. Any suggestons would be appreciated.

I do have a lot of direct experience with this problem. It's not going to work because the backup only has photos, videos, contacts, etc. but the iPhone also has to fit the OS, apps, music, etc. which won't show on the backup.
There are some third-party apps out there that will let you extract shtuff out of the backup but I don't have direct experience with those, use at your own risk.
If you had iCloud, you can get back all your contacts, etc. without doing a restore.

  • Just downloaded ios 7.0.4 for my iphone4 and backed up before doing so. Now that it's been updated and restored I keep being asked to setup my iphone. When I select restore from itunes I keep getting stuck on setup iPhone. Cant get back in phone!

I backed up the phone and updated to ios 7.0.4 which took about 2 hours.  Now the phone powers on and says hello in different lagnuages and says to slide to setup.  I am asked to choose a network and then if I want to setup as a new iphone, restore from icloud or restore from itunes backup.  When I select restore from itunes the screen says "connected to itunes".  In itunes I select restore from backup however after a few seconds itunes says that it cannot restore beause there is not enough free space on the iphone.  During this attempt to restore I see the home screen and my screen saver and everything for a split second, then the phone powers off.
I see in itunes that all of my photos and data are still on the phone however I cannot get into the iphone.

Have you tried restarting or resetting your iPhone?
Restart: Press On/Off button until the Slide to Power Off slider appears, select Slide to Power Off and, after It shuts down, press the On/Off button until the Apple logo appears.
Reset: Press the Home and On/Off buttons at the same time and hold them until the Apple logo appears (about 10 seconds).
    No data will be lost.

  • Updating to IOS7 caused all files on iPad to disappear and restore from iTunes does not work

I recently updated my iPad to IOS7. Before doing so, I backed up the contents to iTunes.  After completing the update, I found that the iPad has been completely cleared out of all files. .It is now completely empty and prompts for a new setup when I turn it on.
So naturally I tried to restore from iTunes. However, although the restore process appears to have completed, nothing changes at all on the iPad.  It remains a blank slate.
Can someone please advise how I can recover my files?  There are a lot of important photos I want to preserve. Perhaps I am missing some obvious step.
    Thank you

  • I updated to ios7 and got the set up asst and selected restore from back up.... can't get itunes to do the restore as it wants me to turn off find my iphone, but I can't access anything on my iphone to turn off as I am in ios set up assistant

I updated my iphone 4 to ios7.04 in itunes.  In itunes, it appears that all my data/apps/music/etc are on the phone  (but I cannot see anything on phone itself except setup screens).  I am getting the ios7 setup screen on my iphone.  I have selected my language, selected my wifi netowork, enabled location services, and chosen resore from itunes back up.  Next screen I get says to connec to itunes, which I did.  In itunes, I select restore from backup.  I then get a message that I need to disable "find my iphone " "Go to iCloud Settings on your iPhone and turn off Find My iPhone before restoring your iPhone."  I cannot go to any settings on my iphone as I cannot get past the connect to iturnes screen!  I have also tried  not enabling location services and that made no difference.  I cannot get to anyplace on my iphone except the ios setup first few screens.  I am going crazy, there must be some simple thing I have missed!  Any help appreciated!

I found a way to get to my data.  So do not need remedy at this time.
fwiw, I changed my ios7.04 setup answer of restore from itunes to new iphone. Eventually that allowed me to set up icloud, then turn off find iphone, restore.  Very strange ios update.

I think it's QuickTime player causing the problem, when I try to open it I get the windows error that an error has occured
Let's try swapping out your QuickTime again, taking a few extra explicit precautions this time.
Head into your Add/Remove programs. uninstall QuickTime.
Next, we’ll manually remove any leftover program files and folders.
    1. On the Start menu, click My Computer (or double-click My Computer on the Desktop).
    2. In My Computer, open Local Disk.
    3. Open Program Files.
    4. Right-click on the QuickTime folder and click Delete from the shortcut menu.
    5. Navigate to C:\Windows\system32\.
    6. Remove the files QuickTime.qts and QuicktimeVR.qtx. (If “Hide filename extensions for known file types” is enabled on the PC, then those two files will appear as “QuickTime” and QuickTimeVR”.)
    7. Restart your computer.
Now download and save a copy of the latest standalone QuickTime installer to your hard drive. (We'll run the install from there rather than online.)
Latest Quicktime Installers … get the one that doesn’t mention iTunes
Switch off antivirus and antispyware applications prior to the install. Start the install by doubleclicking the QuickTimeInstaller.exe.
If that install goes through okay, restart the PC and try launching iTunes again. Does your iTunes launch properly now?
(If you get an error message on the QuickTime uninstall or standalone reinstall, let us know what it says. Include error message numbers if you're getting any.)

  • Hi I have an iPhone 4 and suddenly it stopped working. Could here notifications and nothing on the diisplay. Wake up  button on top is not working. so unable to restart the phone. Wanted to try restore from iTunes but Find my iPhone (iCloud) is on.

Hi I have an iPhone 4 and suddenly it stopped working. Could here notifications and nothing on the diisplay. Wake up  button on top is not working. so unable to restart the phone. Wanted to try restore from iTunes but Find my iPhone (iCloud) is on. How to recover or restart my Phone

Follow these steps to log into your iCloud account on your computer and deactivate "Find my iPhone" on your device:
Remove an iOS device or Mac on which you can’t turn off Find My iPhone
If you can’t turn off Find My iPhone on the device, turn off the device so it goes offline, then remove it from Find My iPhone on iCloud.com.
Note:    You can also remove your iOS device by first erasing it—just follow the instructions below for removing an iOS device you don’t have. You can later restore the device from an iCloud or iTunes backup.
Turn off the device you want to remove.
Sign in to icloud.com/#find on another computer with your Apple ID (the one you use with iCloud). If you’re using another iCloud app, click the app’s name at the top of the iCloud.com window, then click Find My iPhone.
Click All Devices, select the offline device, then click Remove from Account. If you don’t see Remove from Account, click All Devices again, then click the Delete button next to the device. If the device comes online again, it will reappear in Find My iPhone. If your device reappears, turn off Find My iPhone on the device (follow the instructions above for removing a device by turning off Find My iPhone), or if it’s an iOS device and you no longer have it, follow the instructions below for removing an iOS device you no longer have.
Remove an iOS device you no longer have
If you no longer have the iOS device because you gave it away or sold it, you need to remotely erase it before you can remove it.
Sign in to icloud.com/#find with your Apple ID (the one you use with iCloud). If you’re using another iCloud app, click the app’s name at the top of the iCloud.com window, then click Find My iPhone.
Click All Devices, then select the device.
Click Erase [device], then enter your Apple ID password. Because the device isn’t lost, don’t enter a phone number or message.
Note:    If you’re trying to erase a family member’s device, that person will need to enter his or her Apple ID password on this device. If the device is offline, the remote erase begins the next time it’s online. You’ll receive an email when the device is erased.
When the device is erased, click Remove from Account. All your content is erased, and someone else can now activate the device.

Normally, I would suggest restoring the iPad and uninstall and reinstall iTunes but you have done both of those things - more times than you ever imagined!
Have you thought about turning auto syncing off?
Without connecting your iPad to your laptop, start iTunes. Click on Edit. Click on Preferences. Click on Devices. Check the box next to "Prevent your iPod etc. from automatically syncing." Click OK.
If you do this you can backup the iPad right away before it syncs. You may want to go into all of the iTunes tabs and just make sure that all of the current content on the iPad is selected to sync before you actually do sync.
This doesn't solve the problem, but it would prevent the automatic sync and erasing content. Hopefully, in the next few days- when iOS 5 is released - you will also be relieved of this weird iPad behavior - since the iOS devices are supposed to become PC free.
BTW - and this is no excuse for what you are experiencing, but I have found that some of the game apps that I had on my iPad turned out to be quite troublesome and after I removed them, my problems went away. I know that is almost sacrilege with regard to the Angry Birds addiction .... But I'm just saying ...

  • Restored from icloud...now do I restore from itunes

Hi, my iphone4 crashed while loading and update and had to be restored to factory settings.  my phone was restored from an icloud back up.  do i also restore from itunes?  i would like some of the photos and the specific music I had loaded on my phone, but I don't want to cancel what has already been restored nor duplicate any items either.  Any advise is appreciated.  Thanks ;-)

Just do a sync to iTunes and select the photos/music you would like to have moved over.
After you have everything the way you want it, do another backup to both your PC and to iCloud to keep both up-to-date.

  • Error message Iphone cannot make or receive calls.  Restore from iTunes

I received this error message - "Iphone cannot make or receive calls.  Restore from iTunes"
Has anyone received this before & know what the issue is?

If you are restoring from a backup, that's your problem. The backup is corrupt. After you restore, you need to select "Set up as new." You will need to reinstall everything again.

Whats my next move as I CANNOT use the ipas at the moment!!!!!!!!

Your iPhone's iOS must be same or newer than the one in backups. In your case it is older so you need to update your iPhone and then recover it with backup.

  • HT3406 If I choose "restore from iTunes backup" to move everything from old phone.  Will I still be able to use the old phone for music and apps?  Can the old phone be docked up to the computer?  Or will the new and old phone overwrite each other in some

If I choose "restore from iTunes backup" to move everything from old iphone to a new one, will I still be able to use the old phone for music and apps?  Can the old phone be docked up to that same computer every now and then?  Or will the new and old phone overwrite each other in some way?  In other words, are the two phones treated as different devices when the "restore" option is used to set up the new phone?   Thanks in advance.

Yes, you can use the old iPhone as an iPod touch.

    Not necessarily...
You would need to check the Terms and Conditions for the Mac App Store and possibly iTunes for clarity on that assumption...
