Is it possible to do a sophisticated search in Mac

It trying to search for a document that has the word "CIA" in it but it appears that Mac never heard of whole word search or quotes.

I don't know why the other poster answered in the negative.
The Mac certainly knows how to do the kind of search you're asking for. Without quotes around CIA in the search field, Spotlight finds a file name or a file with contents with any word that begins with CIA (ciao, ciabatta... hmm, not lots of English words starting with cia...). In a Search window, you can specify that cia could be any part of the word: Garcia, uncial (as opposed to the Spotlight menu, where it always is the beginning of a word.
Using quotes around a phrase - "time machine" looks for that exact phrase. Without the quotes, the two words must be in the filename or contents but not necessarily together, or even in that order: "the machine takes time to warm up" would satisfy the non-quote search.
Using quotes around a single word: "CIA" keeps the search from including that as part of the word, so you'll get CIA only - sounds like exactly what you were asking about.
If you're not getting these correct results, there's something else going on, but you should be aware that the Mac does work that way for searches, so you have to look at other issues - such as is the place where the target document resides been excluded from the Spotlight index.

  • Possible to do case-insensitive searches?

    G'day,
I was wondering if it's possible to do case-insensitive searches in oracle/HTMLDB?
I've tried what I thought would work
"select * from application where name like '%microsoft%'", this unfortunately doesn't return any records with a capital in it(eg "Microsoft").
If there is no way to do case-insensitive searches what is the best way around it?
    Thanks
    -Colin

    Colin,
Yes it is possible to do case insensitive searches using SQL. Try, for example:
select * from application where upper(name) like '%ORACLE%'
The trick is to upper() both sides of the like operator.

  • Is it possible to add a second monitor via mac mini with iMac

    Hi
is it possible to add a second monitor via mac mini with iMac
    or is there another solution?
all i want to know is if i can run a second monitor or link a mac mini for more speed like i heard you can with the G5 Towers.

The iMac will allow you to connect a second monitor but that monitor will show the same thing as the iMac's built-in screen.
You can network a Mac mini and iMac via Ethernet or Firewire.
Software load sharing like Xgrid can allow you to share work between the Macs.

It is possible to get MS Office free for Mac?

Not legally. And in all honesty, people take a pretty dim view on this forum of those that want something for nothing. Not judging, just saying.
If you want a free production suite (similar to Office, that opens .docx and .xlsx files, etc) then take a look at Openoffice, which is an open-source solution.

  • "File, Find, Searching "This Mac" or "New Finder Window" not finding files ?

    I an iMac 7,1, Mac OS X 10.6.8, Build 10K549,
I have noticed on many occasions recently that when I ma using either ...
    File, Find, Searching "This Mac"
    or
    "New Finder Window"
I am NOT finding the files I am looking for ...
I now they are there, so I go through all my folders, and find the files, or folders I am looking for ...
So why could this be happening, why are they not found in the search ?
Is there a fix or addition ?

As baltwo eventually explained, you have to add the search criteria "System files" to your search, with the option "Include" selected, to find many items Spotlight otherwise excludes from search results. Alternately (& quite ridiculously), if your search is restricted to the parent folder containing the item, you don't need to add this.
For example, if you open /Library in the Finder, enter "Desktop Pictures" in the search box, you won't get it in the results with the default "This Mac" location, but if you click "Library" for the location, you will. (Yes, many users think this is bizarre, "what were they thinking?" behavior.)
What Spotlight considers "system files" is only slightly less bizarre, as you will probably discover once you start using it to broaden searches. For instance, Safari history items & Mail.app messages are not found unless you include system files, but many files like C Header Source files (in System/Library/Frameworks) are found without including system files in the search.
When it was introduced in Tiger, Spotlight was supposed to be a next-generation search engine, capable of accurately guessing what you were looking for (& filtering out what you weren't) with near-sentient intelligence. I think almost anyone who used that version will agree it did not achieve that lofty goal. Apple apparently agreed, or at least listened to the complaints enough to realize it needed rethinking. Unfortunately, what its designers came up with for the Leopard rethink feels like an early beta version, full of hastily implemented, quirky features that never got sorted out before it was released.
We can only hope that we won't have to wait for OS 10.6 for a more mature, less quirky version.

  • Is it possible to delete iwork documents off my Mac but keep them saved in iCloud?

    Hello,
Is it possible to delete iwork documents off my Mac but keep them saved in iCloud?
    Thanks in advance

In Finder preferences > General, I changed New Finder windows show: from All My Files to my short login name. This reduces the confusion in presented files.
You can control where you retrieve or save iWork documents via the open and Save.../Save As... dialogs -- or with drag & drop -- be that local or iCloud. I have Pages documents in iCloud that do not reside on my local disk. I can always retrieve them from iCloud to local storage as needed. You certainly can remove a local copy of a document that you already have saved in iCloud.
The act of saving a document to iCloud does not create a duplicate (backup) copy on your local storage.

  • How to get dynamic icons like in "Searching this Mac"?

    Hello,
So whenver I use spotlight to search something and click on "Show all in finder" I get the "Searching This Mac" window. The one where I can add filters and "stuff". When I resize this window, the icons rearrange themselves to allways fit the window, so that no icons are ommited. It's like they adapt dynamically to the window's size. OS is Lion.
Is there a way to get this behaviour on all finder windows? If so, how do I get them to behave that way?
    Thank you in advance,
    Milton Sá

I don't know of a way to make it happen automatically.
But you can make it happen with little effort. After resizing the window, press Command-Option-1
This instruction will perform a Clean Up action making the icons fill the window, using 'by name'. If you want a different arrangement function, look in the View menu, Clean Up By submenu.

Is it possible to view .bbb files in a mac? how? I am transferring my bberry contacts onto my macbook pro, but cannot open the .bbb files...

Well, if simply double-clicking the .bbb file doesn't work, first try dragging the file onto the BBDM icon (either in the Dock, on the desktop or in the Applications folder or wherever it's stored). That tells Finder to open it with that application.
Otherwise, right-click on the file and choose the Open With option. If BBDM is not the default, select Get Info and use the Open with box from there to select it (if it's not in the list, choose 'other' and navigate to it), then click the 'change all' button.

  • How do I delete files found by Searching "This Mac"?

I am trying to get rid of the .xmp files that the PC version on ACDsee put in my files. I did a search and found 10,000 of these pest on my new iMac with
Searching "This Mac". I am able to select them all in that window, but there is not an option to delete them. I tried dragging them to the trash.
I realize these are in many folders on my computer. Is there an easy way to get rid of them all at one time? If not what would be the quickest
way to get rid of them? All help will be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks so much,
    Jan

I disconnected my EHD and now it is letting me select them(dragging my mouse over about a 1000 at a time) and throw them in the trash. It must have found
some on the EHD, which I am going to wipe clean anyway after my files are moved over. I'll just check daily for new ones. Hope is is really deleting them from all those files. Over 6000 without the EHD.

  • Is it possible to import MS Outlook Mail for MAC 2011 files into AppleMail?

Is it possible to import MS Outlook Mail for MAC 2011 files into AppleMail?

    Yes and no.
Outlook for Windows (or Mac) can save individual emails as .msg format, Apple Mail cannot import these but there is a utility that can convert them to the .eml format supported by Apple Mail.
    See http://45rpmsoftware.com/mailraider.php
Outlook for Windows can also export entire folders of emails as PST files, again Apple Mail cannot import these but there are utilities which can convert PST files to the mbox format supported by Apple Mail.

  • Is it possible to run SAS statistical software on Mac computers?

Is it possible to run SAS statistical software on Mac computers? I am looking to buy a Mac but I heard taht they had problems running SAS. Does anyone have experience running this statistical software on their computer?

I am not a SAS user but from what I found on various web sites, the latest Mac native version of SAS is version 6 (which goes back to 1999-2000...).
So if you want to use SAS on a current Mac, it will probably have to be a Windows version running on the Mac either using Apple's Bootcamp or Parallels Desktop for Mac virtualization application.

  • Is it at all possible to move ipod music from a mac to a pc?

...without a CD burner on the mac?
    Here's the problem...
My son wants to burn a CD of some of his ipod music. We had originally intalled the ipod on a mac. However, the mac disk is full, and we haven't been able to install an external cd burner.
We have several pcs with cd burners, so I thought I could move the music over to the pc using the ipod. It did create a "shared" library, but you can't do anything with that but listen to it. I reformatted the ipod to pc format, but can't put the music back on the ipod.
I should be able to reformat the ipod back to mac, then reload the songs on there, but unless I can free up enough space to load the cd burner software, I'm kind of out of luck?

"is it at all possible to move ipod music from a mac to a pc?"
Windows can't read the HFS+ file system that a Mac uses.
If you need to use a Mac (HFS+) formatted iPod on a Windows PC, you'll need to install some 3rd party software such as XPlay 2.0 (which you can get from MediaFour Software). This will enable your Windows PC to read a Mac-formatted iPod.
