Is it possible to edit one iBA file on two machines simultaneously?

I'm part of a two man team creating an iBook. I do design/programming, and the other guy is the author. Is it possible for both of us to be editing the same file on separate machines at the same time without simply overwriting the other's work everytime we save the file we are working on?
Thanks!
tim

It's not practical, I think, as there is no built-in process for the file locking that would be needed, sorry.
I can imagine a check-in/out system, such as SVN, however, but it would need to be able to handle various file types.
In the end, I'd be more inclined to just do a process that involved handing one file off between multiple authors on an agreed schedule.

Is it possible to edit/change audio files in a published html5 file?

Theoretically, YES, but they would need to be in exactly the same format and have the same filename.  Why would you be wanting to do this?  If the new files are not the same playing length, this could potentially throw out any synchronisation with other elements in the presentation.

    or 3

I think I have the answer.
I was experiencing the exact same problem. I tried lots of different things but what I think works is to exclude your iTunes folder from Spotlight. Open the System Preference for Spotlight, click on the Privacy tab, and then drag your iTunes folder (in your user/Music folder) into that window pane. In fact, I think it is faster when I am fixing tags!
Let me know if it works for you too.

  • Possible to associate one local hostname with two local addresses?

I'm trying to set up a backup system for our LAN. Several of the programs involved (e.g., rsnapshot) have their configuration based around what they recognize as the hostname of the other end. It's easy enough to set the local hostnames as I like, either in /etc/hosts or in /etc/ssh/ssh_config.
BUT the issue is that some of my machines might have different IP addresses depending on whether they're connected over wire or wifi. (Sometimes both connections are up; then wire should take precedence.) And some of the services I'm setting up (again, rsnapshot is an example) have the server initiate the connection to the client. (At least, it's what I think of as the server: the machine with the static wired LAN connection that the backup storage is kept on. The machines being backed up are the ones whose numeric IP isn't stable.)
Again, this is all inside a LAN. The IPs involved are all 192.168.*.* stuff.
How do I get the server to know what IP a given host, e.g., "wifeslaptop", has? If it were just a matter of a single network card, e.g., only wifi connections, then the router is already able to assign it a fixed local IP. But wifeslaptop might (instead or additionally) be connected by wire, too.
I see five possible strategies for solving this.
    1. Is it possible to get the server to associate two numeric addresses with a single hostname? So that it recognizes both as instances of "wifeslaptop", and I guess if it wants to initiate a connection to that host, it tries the first numeric address then the second if that fails? Is it possible to do this simply, or does it require installing some kind of extra server/daemon?
    2. Failing that, I guess I need to wrestle with our router to try to get it to assign the same numeric address to the wired or the wifi connection, and ensure that both connections are never active at the same time.
    3. Or I've got to set up some kind of local dynamic dns system, so that my server can look up "wifeslaptop" and discover what LAN IP address it has.
    4. Failing all of that, maybe I need to instead dynamically generate the config files for the services I'm trying to use. E.g., before running rsnapshot, the server could ping the two numeric addresses wifeslaptop might have, then generate a rsnapshot config file on the fly associating the address which is present with the (single) backup store it keeps for wife's laptop.
    5. Or maybe simplest yet, if it works, I could (either with symlinks or with mount -o bind) let rsnapshot THINK there are two backup stores, one for each version of wifeslaptop, but have them point to the same place on disk.
I'm listing all these strategies so that you can say "Forget about 1, 4 or 5 are much easier." But for the moment, what I'm thinking about is 1. Is this easy to do?

There's some promising text in "man -s7 hostname" which says env variable HOSTALIASES can point to a file which expands simple hostname aliases (with no periods) to whatever you want (I think the expansion has to be to a hostname not a numeric address, but not sure). One could then just manipulate the alias file dynamically. However, this doesn't seem to work with any of the utilities I tried (ping, host).
I guess I could try manipulating /etc/hosts or /etc/ssh_config, since I'm going to be using rsnapshot on top of ssh. But given the potential downsides of messing up either of those files, I'm now inclined to just generate rsnapshot's config file dynamically instead. And hope that similar workarounds can be found for other utilities...

  • HT3702 Is it possible to have one credit card and two debit cards on my itunes account so that we can use different cards for different purchases?

Is it possible to have a number of cards (say one credit card and two debit cards) to be listed as the payment cards for my itunes account, so that different cards can be used for different purchases?  Or can you only have one card registered on itunes at any one time?

So is there any way that three members of a family can share one itunes account but pay for their own purchases, other than inputting their own cards each time they make a purchase.
No, there is no way to do that.
Or if we all have our own individual itune accounts, can we share each other's music, or can you only sync your iphone/ipad/mac, with one itune account at a time?
You can sync content from up to five iTunes Store accounts to any given computer or device. You just will each have to copy the content into your own libraries so you can sync to your devices and have your devices authorized to all applicable accounts.

  • Is it possible to edit a DNG file in Photoshop and get back to Lightroom?

    Hi,
The question title probably doesn't explain much what I'm looking for...
I shot in RAW and then converted to DNG, I like DNG and I can't understand what so many people have against it, anyway that's not the point...
I know have the DNG as my digital negative instead of the original RAW file and I start to do some editing in Lightroom. But then I realized that Lightroom is not enough for something I want to do. For instance, just today I had this picture I needed to remove some people and I had to use heal/clone but as you know, Lightroom's clone and heal features are not as flexible as Photoshop ones.
So now I needed to go into Photoshop, fix the photo and get back to Lightroom and continue my editing. However, I couldn't find a way to do it how I wanted to do... What I did was open the original (unedited) DNG in Photoshop, Adobe Camera Raw pops up and I ignore it, remove the people from the photo and save as TIFF. Then, back in Lightroom I open the new edited TIFF and copy Lightroom's settings from one photo (the DNG) to the other (the edited TIFF).
This workflow sucks and I know there are some options in Lightroom to automate it, but still, I don't think it would solve my problem. At least I couldn't find a way to do it...
What I wanted to do instead was to indeed remove that people from the photo with Photoshop but keep those changes in DNG. But take a note here that those changes could very much be destructive, I'm not talking about ACR or Lightroom's non-destructive editing, the removed people would be gone forever unless I draw some new ones. I really wanted to edit and save some changes on the DNG in Photoshop and keep editing the DNG in Lightroom without using a TIFF in between, do everything in the DNG.
Is this possible or not at all?

    Ricardo.Amaral wrote:

sorry, no can do...ain't gonna happen.
What you've done is hit the wall on is the basic difference between lite duty spot healing and photo level tone and color correction (Lightroom and Camera Raw) and heavy duty pixel retouching in Photoshop.
When you need to substantially manipulate the "pixels" you need Photoshop and you'll be forced to render the raw file into a TIFF or PSD file either through Camera Raw or more better, via Lightroom.
You can do the basic tone and color correction directly in Lightroom and edit in Photoshop from Lightroom. But you will NEED to create and save out a "rendered" image that is no longer raw...then retouch to your heart's desire, save it and it'll be available in Lightroom along side your original raw if you choose.
But no, there's no way to open a raw in Photoshop, manipulate the heck out of it with massive retouching then save that back out as a raw file...ain't gonna happen.

  • Multiple Mac accounts edit one numbers file

Can two accounts(login) on the same Macbook access and edit the same Numbers file? If so, how? thanks

    Hello
After several attemps, I think that the best soluce is to work with several HD or several partitions on the internl HD.
Store the documents on a volume which is not the startup one and every user will be able to work with them.
If you own a single HD and if the machine is intet inside, you may create a partition on the fly.
If the machine is not intel inside and have a single disk, partitionning will require a preliminary backup.
    Then you will have to
    start from the install disk,
create the partitions with Disk Utility,
install the system on one partition
    restore anything on this partition
When the complementary partition is available, move the documents to share on the alternate partition.
It's a bit boring the first time but after that, it is really comfortable.
I have three physical drives so I didn't took care of this kind of problem: I never store documents on the startup volume

  • Where can i find edited adobe photoshop files in time machine after update?

i was having issues with my computer, brought it in to apple store. they suggested i back everything up on external using time machine before doing a erase/re-write. i did so. HOWEVER, my edited photos in photoshop & bridge are gone. after the re-write, i updated from CS3 to CS5.5. all of my metadata is gone from the pictures, my keywords and all of the edited photos.
i don't know if it is related and it's not really my question, but i cannot access any of my itunes music now as it says that it cannot find original files. super frustrating as no one seems to know how to help with this. these two issues arose after my time machine backup that the apple genius told me would certainly back up all of my files. it seems i did something wrong prior to the backup or prior to the software updates that i did after the rewrite. any suggestions that could point me in the right direction are appreciated.

That path is still correct - at least it is on my system - but unless you had Library brought out into a place where it could be found, in the Sidebar for instance, I don't know how you'd get into it in Time Machine. Try this, though: access the user's Library folder via the Go To Folder command, then drag the Library folder into the sidebar. Then run Time Machine and see if the Library folder persists in the TM interface. If it does, you should then be able to navigate into Application Support/MobileSync/Backup/ and find and restore the backup folder.
    Hope this helps.

  • Is it possible to have one library used between two users?

Hello, I am setting up a friend's computer to have a seperate user for him and for his wife. The computer has been in use for about a year with just one user. Adding the second one makes sense for everything they use the computer for--except iPhoto. They have roughly 11,000 images in the library and want to be able to access, edit, export, etc them from whichever user is logged on. They would like it to work so that when one user adds images to the library, the other user has access to them as well. I looked into the sharing photos option, but it seems to restrict you to read only access when viewing shared libraries. Any suggestions on the best option for them? They are using a dual G5 Tower running iPhoto 5.0.4

    Hey,
    saw this in macworld:
(I haven't tried this, but it does indicate that permissions include read and write)
    Family Album
My son and I share an iMac at home. Is there a way for us to use the same iPhoto library?—Kiki Mulliner
With the proper privileges, this can be done with aliases. It works this way:
Choose the most up-to-date iPhoto Library folder (located at your user folder/Pictures) and move it to the Shared folder inside the Users folder at the root level of the hard drive. Click on the iPhoto Library folder, press Command-I to call up the iPhoto Library Info window, click on the Ownership & Permissions triangle, and then click on the Details triangle below. Select Read & Write from the Access pop-up menu directly beneath the Group pop-up menu, select Read & Write from the Others pop-up menu, and then close the Info window. Hold down the Command and option keys and drag the iPhoto Library folder back to the Pictures folder to create an alias.
Switch to your son’s user account, change the name of his iPhoto Library to something like iPhoto Library Old (in case you want to use this library again), open the Shared folder within the Users folder, and Command-option-drag that folder’s iPhoto Library folder to your son’s Pictures folder to create an alias.

K so here is what I want to do. I want to link my apple bluetooth keyboard to my macbook pro and imac at the same time so that when I type on one computer in say MS Word the same type will show up on the other computer at the same time. Is it even possible with bluetooth?
    thanks!

  • IPhoto 11 - Is it possible to have the same library on two machines

I have a replacement imac 27 on which after three weeks of hard work I have finally got 40k of photos in but I have also just purchased a 6 months old macbook pro. As I will use the mbp when away in the motorhome, I would like to be able to keep the libraries the same.
My thoughts are these, Presently the size of the library is 24.27GB and I have a 32GB cruzer usb flash pen. If I copy the library to this, and then use it to import the library - both the same now.... but away for 6 months or so, and libraries now different..... what happens, if I do the same in reverse?
Or I suppose... I could just MOVE the library to the usb pen - and then move it to the MBP and back again.... would that be better.
My concern then comes when the library is too big for the usb pen.
OR is there another way. I have seen mention of an iphoto sync programme, does anyone use this and does it work? (It is not Apple obviously, it is Haystock Software).
Really appreciate some thoughts as I have a 1-2-1 booked for Tues 8th, and I can't take the imac with me, but I want to take the MBP... as I have a lot of questions.
    Carol

Thank you! Would I be better off buying the full version rather than just the free download?
THat depends on what you want to do - if you need the paid version features thenyou need the paid version - if you do not then there is no reason - see their web page to see the features - iPhoto Library Manager - http://www.fatcatsoftware.com/iplm/ -
What is your opinion of Aperture?
Higher end than iPhoto - quiet a bit harder to learn
IF I purchased that, would I still use this other program?
Again it depends on what you want to do - I believe that IPLM has an Aperture version - again check their web site for information
From what I've seen, I'm ready to step up to Aperture. I have thousands of photos and have been exporting them to my desktop and then importing them to Photoshop Elements to 'work with them'. It looks to me like Aperture would do away with that troublesome step.
Or learn to use iPhoto - any photo editor (including Photoshop Elements) and be fully integrated into an iPhoto workflow by making it the external editor in the iPhoto preferences - iPhoto has the capability to directly interface with any external editor - simply go to the iPhoto preferences (iPhoto menu ==> preferences ==> General and set the Edit photo option to in external editor - select the desired external editor and you are set - now when you edit photos they are sent to the selected external editor and when you are finished editing you save (not save as) and the edited photo is returned to iPhoto, the original is maintained in iPhoto and the iPhoto database is correctly updated.
If you want the option of editing in either iPhoto or the external editor after selecting your external editor simply set the edit in back to main window - now when you right click (control Click) on a photo you will get a menu which allows you to select either. - this feature may or may not be available in Aperture and it may work differently - I do not use Aperture

  • Using Illustrator CS and being able to open the same file on two machines!

    Hi,
Don't know if anybody can help?
I have been using macs for many years and now we have moved over to windows!
We are using a server (not sure which type? NT?) and we have found that with the Mac you could not have two users in the same file but with Windows I can be in an Illustrator file and a colleague can also open the same file - no error message comes up or anything! We can then both do changes in that file and the last to save has the updated file.
Can we do anything so you get a error message for the second user?
    Any ideas?
    Thanks
    Carole

    Hi,
this does not make sense? Its the SAME version of Illustrator as that was on the Mac but when working on the PC you can both be in the file. On the Mac you get an error message saying the file is already open and you cannot access it.
This must be a Windows issue or a Server issue as the problem is not on the Mac?

  • Working one iWeb site from two Macs

I have two Macs, and use my desktop for working at home, and my laptop for working away, or when on holiday for working with photographs and, hopefully, blogs. I set up my iWeb site initially using the desktop, and then tried to edit the site using my laptop, only to find that it cannot, seemingly, be done.
Help! Does anyone know how to edit one iWeb site from two machines, or is there, perhaps, a practicable workaround?
    G4 laptop +G4 desktop   Mac OS X (10.4.5)
    G4 laptop +G4 desktop   Mac OS X (10.4.5)
    G4 laptop +G4 desktop   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

The answer is Domain.sites (extension hidden by default). You'll find this on your desktop machine at Users/YourUserName/Library/Application Support/iWeb. Copy that file to removable media and drag it to the same location on your laptop. Launch iWeb and you'll see your desktop site structure in the Site Organizer.
Once you keep the Domain package in sync between the two machines everything will work smoothly no matter which you use. There's a neat tip here which may help in this respect:

  • Is it possible to edit .tod files and mini dv files

Is it possible to edit both .tod files (jvc everio gz hd 7) and files captured from mini dv tapes on same timeline, either in imovie 6 or imovie 8?

However, the problem now is: the JVC footage is wide screen 16:9 (so black stripes top and bottom of screen), and the mini dv is 4:3. How do I get a movie out using either widescreen of 4:3?
You will have to make two decisions. This first is which aspect ratio to use: 16:9, 4:3, or 3:2. The second is whether to use a "Fit" within or "Crop" strategy for mixing the two. The "Fit" option will letterbox or pillar the clip(s) which do not match the aspect ratio. The "Crop" option will fill the screen and crop off the overages. You can however, set the viewing area of the cropped clip(s) using the "Crop" preview window. If the center of attention remains fairly constant throughout the clip, this latter option may work for you. If not, then you may have to "fit" the clip if you don't want to miss anything.
