Is it possible to eliminate recently closed tabs and windows to insure complete privacy
There is a setting to eliminate history being saved, but by clicking on recently closed windows, for example, at least some history becomes immediately available, and is not eliminated by setting the history feature to never retain history. Is there a way to eliminate any possibility that someone could discover your search activities beyond the history setting?
It is best to avoid opening windows and only open links in a tab.<br />
Firefox will always remember at least one window.

You can (temporarily) set the pref browser.sessionstore.max_tabs_undo to 0 to clear the "Recently Closed Tabs" list.<br />
If you want to re-use the "Recently Closed Tabs" feature (Undo Closed Tabs) then you can reset the pref browser.sessionstore.max_tabs_undo to the default value via the right-click context menu.

Recently closed tabs and windows
My 'Recently closed tabs' and 'Recently closed windows' option isn't working. I see it under the 'History' area, but I can't click on it. Is this blocked for a certain reason, and a way for me to unblock it? I just got a new laptop and installed firefox and ever since then it hasn't worked, but it worked great on my old laptop.
Thanks!Make sure that session restore is working properly.

When I installed the Conduit toolbar, I must have changed a setting because I now see the Conduit Apps search on a new tab rather than my former list of recently closed tabs and other options. How do I change what appears on the new tab when I ask for one to be opened?

How do i delete "recently closed tabs" and "recently closed windows"?
I simply can not get rid of cache with recently opened tabs and recently opened windows.
Delete the files sessionstore.js and sessionstore.bak and any existing files sessionstore-##.js with a number in the left part of the name like sessionstore-1.js .
See http://kb.mozillazine.org/Session_Restore
You can (temporarily) set the pref [http://kb.mozillazine.org/browser.sessionstore.max_tabs_undo browser.sessionstore.max_tabs_undo] to ''0'' to clear the ''Recently Closed Tabs'' list.
Use the ''Reset'' context menu item to re-enable ''Undo Closed Tabs'' with the default value if you want to re-use that feature.
You can clear "Recently Closed Windows" if you restore a window and open a blank tab (Ctrl T) and close all other tabs with a middle click.
If you close the window with only that empty tab then that window is removed from the list.
To avoid that make sure that you close all tabs before closing a window.
Set the pref '''browser.tabs.closeWindowWithLastTab''' to ''false'' on the about:config page to prevent closing the last tab from closing the browser. -
I have only had this problem since updating to firefox 25. I have already tried resetting the ff deafaults. it did restore the "undo close tab" for a short while. but when i exited and restarted ff i have the same problem again. I don't want to have to keep resetting the defaults, because it is too time consuming to then set all my preferences again.
I had the same difficulty. Could not use the Ctrl+Shift+T combo to undo close tabs. The solutions mentioned here did not work. I turned off the add-on "Tab Mix Plus" and the keystroke combo worked. Updating to the latest version of Tab Mix Plus solved the issue.

Where is the 'History Recently Closed Tabs' menu in Firefox 29
There used to be a 'Recently Closed Tabs' in the old orange Firefox 28 menu. Now it seems version 29 only has a 'Restore Closed Tabs' menu item in its 'History menu'. There seems to be no option to restore individually closed tabs. I'm always closing a tab by accident, and the old method was very fast and easy.
Another person asked about this, but it seems his only solution was the 'Undo Closed Tabs Button' Add-On:
https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/997285?esab=a&as=aaq
In the old menu, you had access to your recent history, 'Clear Recent History', 'Restore Previous Session', 'Recently Closed Tabs', and 'Recently Closed Windows' in one easy to access spot. Now all that is buried, or doesn't seem to exist anymore.
Is there any way to re-configure the new menu to include at least the 'Recently Closed Tab's menu again? You can click History in the 3-bar Firefox menu button on the Navigation Toolbar to see the sections for recently closed tabs and recently closed windows.
You can also unhide the menu bar and open the History menu.
*Press the F10 key or tap the Alt key to bring up the hidden Menu bar. -
Although I had "Show My Windows and Tabs from Last Time" set in Options, my tabs aren't being restored after a crash. I also had my Home Page set to my Yahoo Mail page upon opening a new session. I then changed my Home Page to a blank page, but that hasn't worked to restore my open tabs after a crash. To make matters worse, under History,Recently Closed Tabs and Recently Closed Windows stay gray, so I can't restore the open tabs from there, either.
Make sure that you not run Firefox in [[Private Browsing]] mode.
In Private Browsing mode some menu items are disabled (grayed) and some features like visited links and others are disabled and not working.
You are in Private Browsing mode if you see "Tools > Stop Private Browsing".
See [[Private Browsing]] and http://kb.mozillazine.org/Issues_related_to_Private_Browsing
You enter Private Browsing mode if you select: Tools > Options > Privacy > History: Firefox will: "Never Remember History"
To see all History settings, choose: Tools > Options > Privacy, choose the setting '''Firefox will: Use custom settings for history'''

Does anyone else have this problem? It's in my history, but not under "Recently Closed Tabs".

Undoing 'Recently Closed Tabs' no longer available - please help!
I find myself unable to access the 'undo closed tab' option, which I have previously found so useful. When I go to History > Recently Closed Tabs, the Recent Closed Tabs entries are greyed-out. How can I reactivate this essential functionality please?
-> Tap '''ALT''' key or press '''F10''' to show the Menu Bar
-> go to Help Menu -> select '''Restart with Add-ons Disabled'''
Firefox will close then it will open up with just basic Firefox. Now do this:
-> Update Firefox to the latest version by going to Help Menu -> About Firefox -> click '''Check for Updates''' -> if an updated version is found then download the latest version and install it. After that follow these steps:
-> go to View Menu -> Toolbars -> unselect All Unwanted toolbars
-> click the Favicon on SearchBar -> click '''Manage Search Engines''' -> select all Unwanted Search Engines and click '''Remove''' -> click OK
-> go to Tools Menu -> Add-ons -> Extensions section -> REMOVE All Unwanted/Suspicious Extensions (Add-ons) -> Restart Firefox
You can enable your Known & Trustworthy Add-ons later. Check and tell if its working. -
It has been a long time since I have used Firefox (got a Macbook, and for some reason just used Safari for a long time), so please forgive me if I am just missing something in the Firefox settings.
Anywho, I have Firefox set up to not remember my history because I like the privacy it offers. I think it is odd that I have it set up to delete my history, yet when you go to "History", it keeps a list of all my closed tabs... Doesn't that kind of defeat the purpose of having the browser not save my history?
Is there a way to prevent Firefox from keeping this list of my recently closed tabs?Note that Firefox keeps a list of one closed window even with browser.sessionstore.max_windows_undo set to 0, so you may have to open another window with one tab and close this window to purge websites from this list.

I am using Nightly-Elm 21.0a1 Recently Ctrl + Shift + T stopped working. History --> Recently Closed Tabs still works. Other hotkeys also still work.
I already tried Safe Mode, didn't work. In a new profile it does work.
This guy (https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/853883) seemed to have the same problem. The solution offered was to transfer some files from a fresh profile. I am not sure what files to transfer. I tried the prefs.js, but that didn't help. The Reset Firefox feature can fix many issues by restoring Firefox to its factory default state while saving your essential information.
Note: ''This will cause you to lose any Extensions, Open websites, and some Preferences.''
To Reset Firefox do the following:
#Go to Firefox > Help > Troubleshooting Information.
#Click the "Reset Firefox" button.
#Firefox will close and reset. After Firefox is done, it will show a window with the information that is imported. Click Finish.
#Firefox will open with all factory defaults applied.
Further information can be found in the [[Reset Firefox – easily fix most problems]] article.

In beta 8, reopening the most recently closed tab would reopen that tab in the same location where it was before. Is this a bug or perhaps a setting in about:config?

[https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=624265 Bug 624265] – Undo most recently closed tab creates a new tab group and switches to it -
If, by accident, I click on the bottom part of Firefox (above Windows´ taskbar) the browser sort of minimizes and I can´t reopen it, I have to cancel everything I´m doing. As I usually work with many tabs, a pop-up asks me if I want Firefox to save my tabs for next start, and I click on "Yes", but then, when I open it, I can´t restore them at all, even if I go to History-> Recently Closed tabs...
How can I solve this???
Please, I´d really appreciate it if you could help me, because this is so annoying, and makes me waste a lot of time!Hi Morbus,
Thanks for your quick response. I set Tools>Options>General>Show my windows and tabs from last time as you told me, but it didn´t work. I also disabled add ons and ran the Safe Mode, though I still got no solution, so this is my Troubleshooting Info:

I hope you find this useful. Thanks again :) -
In the older version (do not know which number), there was an easy way to view all the recently closed tabs from a drop-down menu, which could be accessed from the top-left of the browser.
Now, you have to go to History>View History Sidebar. And even then, there is no view for the recently closed tabs.
I liked the simplicity of being able to see the last tab that had been closed, and the one before that, and the one before that — all in chronological order. Now, there is no way to tell which tabs/links were closed when.
I hope this makes sense. ... I even installed a few add-ons to help me with this issue, but they didn't do the job quickly and easily. That's not bad, but it does not give me control over opening the exact tab I need. I assume this opens all tabs that were closed in any given session? That could be a lot of tabs. I do miss the fine-grained control and convenience of the older version. Sorry, I sound picky, but this issue has really affected my browsing and working experience quite a bit.
Anyway, thank you for your time and help, Philipp.
Hopefully the developers will put it back in at some point. -
Suddenly with version 9 and 10 i cant use the shortcut command of ctrl+shift+t to open the most recently closed tab. a feature used several times a day, previously. This is very Frustrating to me, i have tried looking up a tool keyconfig 20110522 and looked that it says that ctrl+shift+t is the right command, but i still cant use it WHY oh WHY?? if i could get some help figuring this out it would be so awesome, cause i love Firefox, been using it almost daily for the last 10 or so years and i don't intend to switch soon.
Hi,
Please check if this happens in [https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Safe%20Mode Safe Mode.] This is a temporary diagnostic session and you can exit anytime and start Firefox normally again. This session disables all the '''Extensions''', themes ('''Appearance''') and '''Plugins''' in '''Tools''' ('''Alt''' + '''T''') > '''Add-ons'''.
