Is it possible to exclude thumbnails and previews from a vault?

I think in Aperture 1.5, vaults did not include any preview or thumbnail files, but only the files containing metadata, adjustments etc. (and the masters, unless referenced only)
Somewhere along the way to 3.0 this changed so now previews and thumbnails are backed up each time you update your vault.
This has two BIG drawbacks:
- the vault becomes much larger than necessary (I always generate large previews)
- the update process takes much longer as more files need to be copied.
On the other hand, I do not see any tangible benefit of including the extra files - provided I back up both masters and the adjustments, I should be able to regenerate thumbnails and previews after a restore following, say, a fatal hard drive error.
(If I chose to delete all previews and thumbnails prior to creating a vault, I assume that the vault would be significantly smaller, without losing any information that cannot be recreated by  'generate thumbnail/preview')
Is my understanding correct?
If so, is there a way around it?
If not, can we please have this option in Aperture 3.5 or 4.0?
Thank you!

Hi Matt.  You raise an interesting point.  What you say makes sense to me.
My general response is:  external drives are cheap.  Buy what you need and don't spend any time trying to "save" disk space.  IME, the administrative overhead is far more costly than the upfront equipment costs.
Here are some specific answers (as I understand how Apeture uses Vaults).
There is no way to exclude Previews from Vaults.  Each Vault includes all extant Previews.
Each Vault is a differential back-up.  Updating the Vault should update only those files that have been added, changed, or deleted.  Unchanged files -- including Previews -- are not backed up anew each time you update a Vault.  The amount of time it takes to update a Vault will vary based on the number of changes made, and should have nothing to do with the size of the Library or the number of files in it.
You can test your hypothesis.  Delete all your Previews, and create a new Vault.  Let us know what you find out.
Suggestions for enhancements should be made directly to Apple via "Aperture→Provide Aperture Feedback".  The forum is -- officially -- strictly for user-to-user interaction.

  • Thumbnails and Previews have a green tinge

    The thumbnails and previews in my library have suddenly developed a green tinge.
    I have tried Update Previews, Generate Thumbnails, and Generate Previews with no success. I have also used Repair database and Rebuild database, again with no positive result.
    I am at a loss to know what to do next.
    Jerry

    I have a similar issue, but it doesn't seem to affect all thumbnails.
    Thumbnails have thos unprocessed raw look (bluish, greenish tint):
    But they look fine once you open the real pictiure:
    What could possibly cause this problem? I have re-generated prebviews and thumbnails but can't seem to solve the problem.

  • Resizing RAW thumbnail and preview

    No one in Adobe technical support seems to be able to help me.
    I've updated CS2 to CS5, and in Bridge, am unable to increase the thumbnail and preview size of .CR2 images. JPEGS, PDF, PSDs... they all resize fine. And before you ask... yes I know about the slider at the bottom. And yes I have tried all the 'cache' options.
    I have also tried to create a new login with administrator rights (at the request of tech support) and it still has the same issue.
    I have also reinstalled CS5 once as well.
    Any suggestions? Pretty please?

    Thanks for reporting back, still some questions.
    Did you search for hidden cache files other than the before named cache
    files?
    Here or some of my thoughts about your attempts:
    >> Purged the cache Bridge CS5
    Have you already tried to delete the complete cache folder manually from the
    user library cache/adobe/adobe Bridge CS5 location? After restart Bridge
    creates a fresh, new but completely empty cache file and you need to recache
    your thumbs and previews.
    >> Deleted the Bridge preferences.
    By this you mean the plist file from user library and combined with
    restarting Bridge holding down option key and choose reset preferences?
    >> Re-created the SwitchBoard preferences files.
    Could you explain how? To my knowledge Switchboard resides at root level on
    your system and serves Adobe Air that is also used by Bridge as part of the
    CS suite. But I'm not aware of an option to recreate the preferences?
    >> Updated all software including Camera Raw Plug-in and Bridge and Photoshop
    That should do but for security check if you have only one version active
    (in PS Menu Photoshop about plug ins - Camera Raw, it should say 6.3.0.79)
    >> Created new user
    Most efficient to rule out user specific problems, which brings me to the
    question if you have the default application folder as place for installed
    CS applications?
    >> Reset all work space
    It was a wild guess...
    >> Deleted and reinstalled CS5 twice now
    That is time spoiled if you did not use the Adobe Clean tool also to get rid
    of all preferences. See this article also with the download of the clean
    tool itself.
    http://www.adobe.com/support/contact/cs5clean.html
    I just can't understand why it is only RAW images. All other formats are fine.
    It is odd.
    Might narrow it down on the raw converter?
    Any other suggestions?
    Personally I would start from Scratch. First read about the Clean Tool and
    be sure to back up all your customized settings, actions tools etc in all
    CS5 applications. Use the save option as much as possible for these settings
    you want to keep and give the files a proper name and new folder so you can
    import them again in an easy way.
    Deactivate the software and use the uninstaller that can be found in the
    separate Suite applications in the application folder. Then use the clean
    tool and then use a search like spotlight (but preferable the free or almost
    free Easy Find that also finds hidden files) to check on all other Adobe
    files that reside on your system and decide if you trash them or place them
    in a separate folder outside the library.
    Don't forget to delete the hidden cache files for Bridge. You will need some
    time to recache the lot but if it works it is all worth it.
    If it does not work I help you crying if that is of some comfort for you

  • Aperture constantly rebuilds same thumbnails and preview images.

    What is behind Aperture 2's pathological obsession with constantly rebuilding the same thumbnails and preview images, and is there any way to stop it? I can't link this performance killing problem to any specific action on my part; I see it in many different circumstances. For example:
    (1) Putting the system to sleep while Aperture is open then resuming later
    (2) Hiding the Aperture app, working on other memory consuming apps for a while (e.g. Photoshop), then returning to Aperture
    (3) Switching from one project to another via the "Projects" tab.
    (4) Quitting Aperture then restarting it.
    I can say with 100% certainty that this is not the result of some previous thumbnailing/preview generation operation that was interrupted. The # of images in the project doesn't seem to have a bearing. Nor does the type of camera or image type I've imported from the camera.
    I can be happily working in Aperture, working with a project created months ago, when all of a sudden the "generating thumbnails" message and the dreaded Wait Cursor appear and my speedy, well-apportioned iMac grinds to a total halt while Aperture does the same ** thing it's already completed before.
    The only hit I get when searching Apple's support site mentions a known bug for those who upgraded from Aperture 1 to version 2 but definitely does not apply to me here.

    Thank you for the reply Tony. I've followed your suggestion but Aperture continues to (apparently) randomly decide to regenerate thumbnails and previews.
    The problem has become bad enough that I've had to stop using Aperture completely.
    Doesn't anybody from Apple read these forums? I can't possibly be the only Aperture user in the world to experience this problem...

  • [Bridge CC] Is there a way to see thumbnails and preview of WMF and EMF files?

    I have a big archive full of technical illustrations, designed by me in the past, saved as EMF or WMF files, very good and lightweight to import in Word documents.
    In the past, Adobe Bridge (CS3 at least) was able to show thumbnails and preview of such a file type.
    Now it is impossible, for me, to search and retrieve, fast enough, old files.
    Is there a way to let Bridge returns to show this files?

    Hi Ram,
    You can see the objects included in a transport request by going to se09 and opening your transport request and drill down to the task and below the task you would have all the objects that are included in the tranport. You can also use se03 to get the details by drilling down the tansport request.
    The problem with importing the function module might be because either the function module or the function group may not be active which may cause the tranport to fail. please check if both are active or not.

  • Bridge "stops working" and displays split thumbnails and previews.

    When working with Windows XP, my Photoshop/Bridge CS3 was working fine. On my new computer with Vista, Bridge acts up in strange ways. It sometimes shuts down spontaneously, causing a Windows "Bridge has stopped working" message to appear.
    At other times, Bridge displays thumbnails that are split or only half there, with the preview image also split in half with the sides reversed. If I wait a few minutes, the proper thumbnails and preview finally appear, but this is a nuisance. BTW, the same copy of Bridge works just fine on my laptop with XP. When I contacted Adobe, they blamed it on Windows. When I contacted Windows, they blamed it on Adobe. Anyone with similar problems and suggested fix?
    Thanks!

    Hi Gerry,
    as it is nearly two months since your initial post, you may have already solved your problem. In which case I'll continue with this reply for the benefit of anyone else who suffers the same affliction:
    My problem was Bridge CS3 running on a 32-bit Vista Home Premium SP1, Intel Core 2 CPU T5300 @ 1.73GHz and 2GB of RAM (if that makes any difference). Like Curt, I'm no computer expert either but I was experiencing a very similar problem to your's in CS3 Bridge.
    The error message contained something about the "nvlddmkm.sys" not working. The 'nvlddmkm.sys' refers to the driver for my graphics card, a 'NVIDIA GeForce Go 7300', whose driver I had recently updated (to solve a separate conflict between an updated BIOS - it never stops!).
    After some fiddling, I discovered that changing the 3D Graphics setting on the Nvidia Control Panel made Bridge once again behave.
    Open the Nvidia Control Panel (right click on the 'desktop' to access it).
    Under the '3D Settings' task, select 'Adjust Image Settings with Preview'. This should reveal a window with an image of a slowly spinning, three-dimensional Nvidia logo. (I understand that the Nvidia Control Panel is common to all its cards.)
    Under the spinning logo image there are three options for 3D settings. On my computer, while my Bridge was broken, the "Use my preference emphasizing: Balanced" option was selected. I changed the option to, "Let the 3D application decide" and crikey! - when I restarted Bridge the previews were once again working. (It may be my imagination, but Bridge appears to now be going better than ever.)
    I switched the Nividia preferences a couple of times just to make sure. The change appeared to have done the job.
    NB: I noticed another discussion in the forums entitled "Suddenly No Images in Bridge" which appears to be a similar problem. They resolved it this way;
    "Depress and hold Ctrl-Alt-Shift when you start PS or Bridge. A menu comes up with three options. Check them all."
    I didn't see that fix until I had sorted mine so I haven't tried it... but now that 'it ain't broke', I 'ain't gonna fix it'!
    Hope this helps you or someone else.

  • Raw file thumbnail and preview problem in Bridge

    When downloading raw files from my new Nikon D3, Bridge generates thumbnails that are a fixed size and the preview panel only shows a thumbnail as opposed to enlarging the image to fit the preview panel. Thumbnails and Preview still work fine with jpegs. My versions of CS3, Bridge and Version Cue are up to date, I believe.
    Thanks...

    Three things:
    • You need to make sure you have updated to Photoshop 10.0.1, Bridge 2.1.1.9 and Camera Raw (ACR) 4.6.
    • You need to purge the cache for the offending folders through the Tools menu in Bridge.
    • You need the Bridge forum:
    http://forums.adobe.com/community/bridge/bridge_macintosh?view=discussions&start=0#
    Please post there if you need further Bridge help.
    Raw files from the D300 are not supported by the old, obsolete version of ACR that gets installed by default by CS3.  What you're seeing now is the embedded JPEG preview only, not the converted raw.   That's why you have to upgrade to ACR 4.6

  • Alpha channels really have messed up thumbnails and Previews

    In AP2 I use to have to put a blank (all white) layer above any alpha channels so the thumbnails would build properly. Now in Ap3 The thumbnails and Previews are screwed up so they are totaly unrecognizable or not showing up at all even after deleting and re generating them. I've placed a bug report with apple but I need a solution or a work around fast.
    Thanks to all who help.

    When you look at the songs in your Music library in iTunes, does the artist name have any punctuation in the artist column?
    I know with some MP3's I ripped from CD before iTunes was available, I had put both title and artist in the title field, and until I corrected them they didn't show up correctly on my iPod.

  • Thumbnail and preview transparency

    thumbnail and preview transparency.  i mean, this is essential.

    Yes, absolutely.
    I am an adamant supporter of Photoshop and Bridge for their usability - so I am shocked to see Bridge can not show the transparency of my .tga images, while a 25$ codec pack for Windows 7 can.
    Am I seriously expected to open every single image in Photoshop to check on the alpha channel???
    Any hint on where to enable this feature would be greatly appreciated - just in case this fundamental option is simply well-hidden.

  • Regenerating thumbnails and previews after Time Machine restore

    Hi there,
    My Aperture library was recently corrupted and fixed only by completely restoring everything on my iMac using Time Machine.  This seems to have worked insofar as my library is alive again.  However, I'm unable to even USE Aperture due to it recreating all my thumbnails and previews.  I currently have about 57,000 remaining and it's taking about 5 seconds to finish each one, all the while bogging Aperture down to the point of being unusable.
    Is this to be expected?  I understand that Time Machine doesn't save previews and thumbnails because Aperture can simply recreate them but at this pace, I'm looking at about a week of over 100% CPU usage.  It just seems strange that its so slow.
    Just to give some specs on my machine:
    Intel Core i3
    3.2 gHz
    Dual Core
    12 GB RAM
    Any advice would be appreciated.  I'm kinda stuck here.
    Thanks,
    Rick

    Hey Mark,
    I ultimately just scrapped Time Machine and started using SuperDuper cloner.  I have been really pleased with it--much more user-friendly than TM in my opinion.
    As far as working with Aperture, the rebuild process does take awhile but seems to be just the way it goes.  The reason mine was taking so exceptionally long though was due to HDD failure, not anything inherently wrong with TM or Aperture.
    Good luck!

  • Possible to Exclude a specific intersection from DATAEXPORT?

    Version: 11.1.2.2
    Is it possible to Exclude a specific intersection from a DATAEXPORT in an Essbase Calc Script? I am able to exclude a member but I only want to exclude 1 intersection.
    Simplified Cube:
    Fund
    Dimension
    Center
    Dimension
    Account
    Dimension
    F1
    C1
    A1
    F2
    C2
    A2
    Working export:
    FIX (@relative("Fund",0), @relative(Center,0), @relative(Account,0))
           DATAEXPORT "File" "," "F:\TMP\Exp_Central.txt" "#Mi";
    ENDFIX
    Trying to exclude only the intersection of F2, C1, A1 (i know it doesn't work this way):
    FIX (@relative("Fund",0), @relative(Center,0), @relative(Account,0))
      EXCLUDE ("F2", "C1", "A1")
           DATAEXPORT "File" "," "F:\TMP\Exp_Central.txt" "#Mi";
      ENDEXCLUDE
    ENDFIX
    desired output:
    F1,C1,A1
    F1,C1,A2
    F1,C2,A1
    F1,C2,A2
    F2,C1,A1 I want this line excluded
    F2,C1,A2
    F2,C2,A1
    F2,C2,A2
    This is extremely simplified (I have multiple intersections to exclude, and a large cube) but should adequately pose the question. This process is moving data cube to cube. As an alternative I was thinking on the target cube I could just do a [FIX...CLEARDATA]. I have been searching for an answer and can't seem to find one, can anyone here offer advice?

    You can exclude a combination but not a specific intersection. EXCLUDE ("F2", "C1", "A1") will exclude F2, C1 and A1 completely.
    As Evgeniy.Rasyuk said, you have to use a different way to achieve it.
    You may achieve it using a rule file. I haven't tried it but you can give a try
    1. create a new text field in rule file which you use to load the data
    2. Join all the fields of dimensions related to F2,C1,A1. (remember to ignore this field during dataload
    3. use reject on the filed to exclude F2C1A1 to load to your database.
    The other way is what you have said to clear the data once it is loaded. Easiest and a simple way

  • How to exclude undo and temp from "Tablespace Space Used (%)"

    Dear All
    Is it possible to exclude undo and temp tablespace monitoring from "Tablespace Space Used (%)" matric?
    Thanks & Regards
    Quazi Abdur Rab

    If you use TEMP >=100 as Warning, this warning can still be raised.
    What version of the database is it? If Oracle 10g, Grid Control (the agent) searches the alert table in the database for alerts, so the database raises the alert and the agent just passes this alert to Grid Control.
    If you are using Oracle 10g, you can use the following statement (connected as sys):
    DBMS_SERVER_ALERT.SET_THRESHOLD(
    metrics_id => DBMS_SERVER_ALERT.TABLESPACE_PCT_FULL,
    warning_operator => DBMS_SERVER_ALERT.OPERATOR_GT,
    warning_value => '90',
    critical_operator => DBMS_SERVER_ALERT.OPERATOR_GT,
    critical_value => '100',
    observation_period => 1,
    consecutive_occurrences => 1,
    instance_name => NULL,
    object_type => DBMS_SERVER_ALERT.OBJECT_TYPE_TABLESPACE,
    object_name => 'TEMP');
    This will create the GT (Greater Than) instead of GE (Greater Equal).
    Kind regards,
    Dave
    ps. I'm using GC 10.2.0.3.0, so thanks for the note that 10.2.0.4 doesn't take 100+ values.

  • Tdms-files: Is it possible to prevent LabVIEW and DIAdem from creating .tdms_index files?

    Hello,
    is it possible to prevent LabVIEW and DIAdem from creating .tdms_index files when opening/creating/editing a .tdms file?
    I think I have no benefit from the .tdms_index files because our applications create a lot of little .tdms-files (repeat measurements). With the additional .tdms_index files we have unnecessary memory consumption and it takes longer for Windows to open the containing folder. Also it´s confusing when searching for a certain file.
    Best Regards
    Daniel
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Hi Baui,
    I'm afraid there's a direct way to disable creating .tdms_index file now from LabVIEW and DIAdem. You can use TDMS Advacend API in LabVIEW, which doesn't create any index file, or you can just make some simple programming and delete the .tdms_index file after closing the TDMS file.
    This is a request for a long time, we'll consider to add this feature for TDMS in future releases.
