Is it possible to have iMovie ignore a drive?

Hi All,
I've got a ton of events and projects on a 2TB drive. Every night that drive is cloned with Superduper (smart update so it doesn't take forever)
to a backup 2TB drive. Because of this, when I open iMovie I need to go take a quick nap or make a sandwich while it churns through the events, twice!. Is there some way I can have it ignore the backup drive without unmounting it? Not only does it take twice as long, there's the possibility I could accidentally work off of the backup drive and lose that work during the next clone.
A thought I just had as I started this discussion is to have Superduper clone the iMovie drive to a disk image on the backup drive. I think it would only mount during the backup process, so iMovie wouldn't see the events since they are within the dmg. Thoughts?

Thank you. I should have thought of this, as I am running iMovie 8 and iMovie HD 6 on an Intel iMac at work. When I installed iMovie HD 6 onto this system (I'm not a fan of the latest incarnation of iMovie), it was put into a "previous version" folder. Since my G4 iMac already has been upgraded to iMovie HD 6, I'll just put iMovie HD 6 into a folder (maybe label it as the "latest version") and then install iMovie HD 5.
Thank you for the insight on the trash emptying messing with the re-editing of photos. If I start a new project using the same photos from iPhoto (I use the media browser within HD 6 to select my photos in my iPhoto library) and never empty the trash until the project is complete, will the problem not appear? Or, does some magic thing tag my iPhotos so that I have to reimport them into iPhoto before using them again in iMovie HD 6?

While I like some of the video editing features of iMovie HD 6, the problems with the Ken Burns Effect have killed my ability to create slideshows with iMovie. This worked just fine in iMovie HD (version 5.x). Is it possible to have both applications installed on my iMac and run one for slideshow production and the other for video production?
I searched and could not find a thread that addressed this issue. If there is one, the URL will be greatly appreciated.

Can I have lightroom ignore a drive when I go to import?

I have a backup drive on my PC that did not cause a problem on my previous verison of Lightroom. But now when I go to import the first thing it does is pull that back up drive up and start searching for all the available images. since there are 10's of 1000's it takes quite a while. Is there a way I can have Lightroom just ignore that drive or have it start looking somewhere else?

The easiest way I know of to avoid this problem is to have your Finder (Mac) or Explorer (Windows) open, as well as Lightroom's Library Module open so that both windows can be seen side by side. Then just drag whichever folders/files you want into the main viewing window in the Library Module (you will see a plus sign on top of the Finder window just before you let go of the files). You will avoid the problem you are experiencing. Just check the top of the screen to make sure that you select "Add" or "Copy." I assume you will be "Adding."

Possible to have imovie split a movie by scene automatically?

most other video software that i have worked with have a feature that splits the video at hand into scenes based upon content automatically so i can delete scenes take for example different plays in a football video without having to go through with the same giant video file and cut around each play tons of times. i am talking about a video file, not an import from the camera.

Ziatron was pointing out that iMovie HD has the function you want built in (i.e., detects when camcorder was stopped, considers this to be a scene change, and will automatically create a new clip at this point) and can be used along with or instead of iMovie '08 at any time. (I.e., most users have both applications installed simultaneously and use the one best suited for any given project.)
As I understand it, it is not possible to transfer projects fra 06 to 08, so having the scenes detected in 06 will not help....
Not quite correct. iMovie HD projects may not import complete with their original effects (titles, transitions, special effects, etc.) in an editable form but the individual source clips (already broken into separate files) are easily imported either directly from the HD timeline or manually from the iMovie HD project package. In addition, the complete timeline with all applied effects can also be imported like any other source file. For that matter, your files can easily be segmented from within iMovie '08 or externally using applications like QT Pro or MPEG Streamclip.

I have a damaged disk and after talking to Apple Support I know I need to wipe my hard drive. I want to save as many of my files as possible, I have an external hard drive and when I boot in recovery HD, I can see my files, just not sure how to transfer.

I'm currently running Lion OSX, and I've already tried repairing the disk multiple times. At this point I really just want to rescue as much of my files as possible.

Is there any critical data on the external drive? If not, partition it so there is enough room for the operating system and a recovery tool that you buy from the store on one partition, and enough to completely recover the contents of the internal drive. Partitioning is described here:

In the options section of the partition tab, be sure to select GUID for both partitions after selecting them. Once done, install the operating system on the first partition, and then install the recovery tool on it. Finally run the recovery tool to exttact the info to the second partition.

You need to convert the VOB files in the TS-Folder of the DVD back to DV which iMovie is designed to handle. For that you need mpegStreamclip:

I searched the forums, but I didn't find anything relevant to my question.
My question is, is it possible to have time code follow your footage on playback?
For example, when I scrub along the clip, the clip will tell me the entire length at the first thumbnail, but then as I scrub along, there is no time code, so I am unable to know how far along the sequence I am.
I was talking to a faculty member, and he was told to grab certain portions of the footage, and he is wondering if this is possible within iMovie '09. I know that this feature is available in iMovie '06 and Final Cut Pro (of course), but I just started working with iMovie '09 last week, and wanted to know if this is possible.
Any help is appreciated, and please let me know if I need to further clarify my question.

If you click VIEW/SHOW PLAYHEAD INFO, you will see the timecodes as you scrub. (Consumer timecodes, not pro timecodes).
This works if you imported your footage from a camcorder, either miniDV or AVCHD.
However, if you have imported an analog file, or saved a DV file to a QuickTime File, you may just see the file creation date in VIEW PLAYHEAD.
However, there is a trick to getting even these clips to display timecodes if you know the start time.
First pick a clip. Make a copy and drag it to your desktop, just so you don't lose anything.
Rename this copy in the following format clip-yyyy-mm-dd hh;mm;ss.current file extension.
For example, clip-2001-07-14 09;30;45.mov (note the space between the day and the hour)
This would be a .mov clip that starts with the first frame at July 14, 2001 at 9:30:45 AM
Then import the clip into iMovie. You now have timecodes at the playhead.

Have iMovie 09, Install Older Versions, too

I have iMovie 09 installed but I cannot add additional transitions and effects with this version. I understand you can add them to older versions. Is it possible to download older versions for free anywhere?

If you want to have both iMovie 06 and iLife 09 (and most do) just install iMovie 06 first, then iLife 09. You are now UN-STOPPABLE!
Also when you install iLife 09 or 11, iMovie 06 is NOT removed from the computer. Previous editions of iMovie were always un-installed when "upgrading" in the past. Apple leaves iMovie 06 on your system, because they want you to have it. iMovie 06 works great with iDVD 09 and iDVD 11.

Possible to Have ToC Default to Show Only Top Level (collapse sublevels)?

I'll bet I'm not the only one wishing for this. Let's say you're using Captivate 4's Table of Contents feature with a longish movie of Cp slides, which is chunked into bite-size sections content-wise. In the ToC, though, you can't mimic that same organization scheme; at least, the learner would first need to collapse all the ToC folders you've created so they see only the top-level listing.
This can be a critical issue: keeping the at-first-glance list in the ToC brief enough to be inviting to learners, yet allowing learners to drive which details are currently visible.
A movie's topical hierarchy could be along these lines, for example ...
Section 1 - National Brands
What are National Brands?
Why Are They Important to Our Business?
Working with Nat. Brands
Practice Your Knowledge
Section 2 - International Brands
What are International Brands?
Why Are They Important to Our Business?
Working with Intl. Brands
Practice Your Knowledge
You'd like to organize the ToC to show only the section titles (1st level) and to suppress the 2nd-level detail (slide titles) until the learner chooses to expand the folder to see those details.
I've tried things like grouping the slides into sections in the Storyboard view and organizing the slides into sections strictly within the ToC -- both to no avail.
Has anyone solved for this need yet?
I'm all ears, and you'd be doing learners of the world a huge favor.

Thanks for being 'on the case' and looking into this so quickly. Your
findings are encouraging, although my user base is generally working with
IE 6 and FP8 or 9.
Since the only thing I may influence is getting IT to help push out FP10,
I'm hoping it's more of a player- than a browser-version issue.
I'll test things out by Monday and let you know the results. Wish me luck!

I just tested this on my local web server and it worked fine. I created a
blank project with 8 slides. Created my TOC with grouping... 2 slides in
each group. I turned on self paced learning. I tried with and without the
widget and it picked up where I left off in either case. See

Is it possible to have an attachment within a pdf doc print at the same time the main doc prints?

Okay, so this may be kind of a weird question. We have some users who are wanting to add a page to an already existing xml document and correct me if I'm wrong, but I've read that it's not possible to add/delete pages from a pdf that's in xml format. Since that is not possible, I have added the page to the xml document as an attachment. Now what I am wanting to know is if it is possible to have the attachment print out at the same time as the main document. We are using the latest version of Adobe Reader and I have access to Adobe Acrobat Standard 9 & 10 and then I have access to Adobe Acrobat Pro 7. I've been unable to find anyting via google or by searching this forum so hopefully I'll draw out some kind of smart cookies and we'll get this figured out. I appreciate any and all input!

Your drive is formatted with the NTFS file system. OS X can read but not write to the NTFS file system. There are third party drivers available that claim to add the ability to OS X to write to an NTFS partition. I have not tried them and don't know if they work.
The only file system that OS X and Windows can both write to natively is the FAT32 file system.

I am back with an update. I turned off Match on both the ipad and the iphone 5. By doing so I was able to sync my Iphone and ipad to itunes and store the music on my devices rather than the slow streaming. So far this has fixed my problems with the iphone I have all my music, playlist, most of the album art and so on. But the ipad is a different story. I have the music and artist but not one playlist I am sure Apple will have an upgrade soon that will address these issues they are usually very good about this.
Now have any of you experienced another problem that has existed as long as I have used faces in Aperture.
I have over 200 faces and they are organized a-z problem is I have this going on A-Z folowed by a few that start over A-Z followed by another few A-Z and again a 4th time A-Z. Imagine how difficult it is while I am showing someone the great features of my iphone, ipad and imac. Which I do talk highly of all the time. But how do I explain that even though their name starts with a or b or what ever they are not important enough to me to be in the first list of A-Z or even the 2nd or 3rd list of A-Z someohow they are in the 4th section of the list!!!!
I have managed to get the Imac to fix this but for some reason the IOS devices do not. Any ideas?

You didn't specify whether you are using the "official" Yahoo mail app, or some other email application like K-9. But either of those allow for the specification of multiple email accounts, and you don't even really need to sign in/out. Once you set up the accounts within the app, just select the email account that you want to view. It might be a little more problematic if you want to prevent each other from being able to see the other's email, however.
