Is it possible to hide a hierarchal layer from one that is lower in the layer stack?

In AI CS5 Version 15.0.2 for Windows 7 64-bit; Is it possible to hide a hierarchal layer from one that is lower in the layer stack? I would like to make visible one of the bottom layers and hide a layer near the top that is on a separate artboard.

Shift click on the mask in the transprency panel and you will add a red x through the mask symbolizing disabling of the mask.

I believe that a Smart Object will solve your problem.
place your original image in a new file as a smart object and do the same for the reflection (made by Transforming, reducing the opacity and introducing a mild horizontal motion blur) on its own layer, then:
by double clicking on the smart object in the layers panel and returning to the original image, any change you make in the original and save, will automatically update the upright image and its reflection.
Nice one Norm.  Five Kudos points to you.

Is it possible to import a mock up from Omnigraffle into Reflow and edit the mockup on Reflow ?

I don't have omnigraffle so I can tell for sure, but the main way in would be if you can get those things in omnigraffle to come into photoshop as layer shapes. Is there an omnigraffle forum to ask about better PSD export? Once you have the layers in the PSD then the import to Reflow should work well.
    Hope that helps,

  • How do I move a layer from one photo to another photo

I am trying to move the sunset from one photo into another photo.

You can also duplicate layer from one document to another in this way: right/Cmd + click on layer and choose: Duplicate Layer. In Duplicate Layer dialog from Document drop-down list choose name of the document to which you want to send duplicated layer. Duplicated layer will be inserted above currently selected layer (group) in document to which you are sending (duplicating) it. You can use same technique for multiple layers or group.

I have photoshop cc, and I am used to photoshop elements. In photoshop it wont allow me to just click on a layer, and have it select that layer . I have to click on the layer in the box that shows all my layers in order to select it. I also want it to not only select the layer on the actual project, but put a hashed line around it that allows me to resize it manually, without having to do it in another window. Does that make sense? I cant even get the layer to select. PLEAE HELP. Id also be able to just click on the layer and drag it. It wont let me, and I am confused.

If you were serious to learn Photoshop, I'd advise you to take Photoshop classes at your nearest community college or some such institution, to take a subscription to lynda.com, to watch all the Photoshop videos at Adobe TV, to google for specific video tutorials on You Tube and for other tutorials in text format.
Even the Help menu in Photoshop can be a great starting place.
Don't expect to find in Photoshop the kind of hand-holding features that Elements has and that appeal to beginners and amateurs.

  • Photoshop: how to drag a layer from one tab to another?

Hello, I am trying to drag a layer from one tab to another in Photoshop and I was able to do this less than 1/2 hour ago and now it will not drag. I have closed the program, restarted my computer, everything and it will not drag. What is wrong???

    Does this work for you?
Document A - left click to select the layer to be copied, then Layer command in the menu bar (or right click in the Layers panel) > Duplicate Layer
In the Duplicate Layer dialogue box, Destination: Document, select the open file to which you want to copy the layer from the dropdown menu
    Click OK

I have a Cisco/Linksys WRT-54G wireless router and 2 Airport Extremes (the small ones that plug directly into the wall). Is it possible to extend the network from the router using these two AEs? I have a DVD player and Ext HD plugged into the router too. Any ideas? I'm guessing the only way is to do what I've seen in these community pages which states that it can be done but it will drop the bandwidth by 50%. Thoughts?? Thanks!

The Cisco/Linksys WRT-54G was one of the very few routers said to be compatible with Apple's implementation of WDS (Wireless Distribution System) settings.
The info that I have on file indicates that only the WRT-54G versions 4 and under were compatible, so that would be one bridge to cross.
Even if you find that your Cisco/Linksys might be the right version, Apple never published instructions on how to configure the Express devices with other manufactures, so users were left to their own devices to try to figure out how to get things working. Apple's instructions to connect to other Apple devices are in the link below:
    WDS network
If you were hoping to use 2 Express devices in this type of configuration...even if it works...the bandwidth penalties will be extremely severe.
The first Express drops the bandwidth (and speed) on the entire network in half and the second halves everything again. So, the result, in effect would be a "g" wireless network running at 25% speed. Few users would consider installing this type of network.
At this point, it becomes one of those things where the fact that you might be able to do something does not mean that there would be much value in doing so. But, it is your decision to decide if you want to try to proceed.

  • Is it possible to hide my cc email from app menus? (to make video tutorials privately)

Hi, I just wanted to know if it's possible to hide the CC email address, such as the one in the Edit menu in Photoshop CC. In many video tutorials I've seen, people seem to manually blur it out every time, which seems very silly. If it's not possible, I'll just make a new junk mail address and go with that.

    Hi Nick2828,
Its not possible that I'm aware of, maybe sign out of the app temporarily? or do what you suggested.

  • Possible to hide an external HDD from iMovie?

I have two external drives, call them DRIVE_A and DRIVE_B, which I use exclusively for iMovie Projects and Events. I am using Carbon Copy Cloner to do a daily backup from DRIVE_A to DRIVE_B. The idea is to import content to DRIVE_A and have it backed up to DRIVE_B. I would like to hide DRIVE_B from iMovie, so that I avoid inadvertently importing content directly to DRIVE_B, rather than to DRIVE_A. Does anyone know of a way to hide an external drive from iMovie (or just keep it out of the list of drives)?

  • How can I copy the layer from one .PSD file to another .PSD file?

    Hi,
Actually it is shape and mask on one layer which I want to use it on my Photoshop CS4 file. If I select all the layer and copy it to my file it just copies the shape but not the mask. How can I copy MASK to my file?
    Please do hlep.
Actually I am trying to copy the following layer.

I believe the fastest way would be to duplicate the layer and send it to the other document. Open both images. Click the document tab of the document with the shape layer. With the shape layer selected in the layers palette, right click where it says the shape layer name. Select "duplicate layer" from the context menu. In the dialog that comes up, select the document you want to copy that layer to in the destination box then press ok.
Alternately, you can open both images then pull the document frame tabs down to open both images in your workspace. Grab the shape layer in the document's layers palette by left clicking it...keep the left button pressed (hand icon should be a grab icon). While left button is still pressed, drag the shape layer over the receiving document. To make the shape layer register in the same location, press the shift key and keep it pressed. Release left mouse button while the layer is over the receiving document. Release shift key after you have released the left mouse button.
This tutorial has a good photo reference for what I mean when I say pull the image tabs down so both documents appear in the same workspace...also shows drag/drop:

  • How do I copy and paste a shape (or layer) from one file to another keeping all of its attributes?

Our department currently uses MS Paint to place varied colored boxes for callouts on top of screen figures used in our documentation. As you know, MS Paint is not a robust image editing application, and we are frustrated at its limitations (especially not having a "non-destructive" edit capability). Consequently, we are evaluating a trial version of PS to see how a workflow could be developed that would allow the department to use callout boxes "stored" in a PS file that could be applied in an easy, consistent manner to our screen figures (but also keep each callout box editable) using PS.
Consequently, in PS using the shape tool, I created a file with our colored boxes for callouts, each on its own layer. Now I am trying to determine how you copy and paste a box (or layer) from this file to a "working" file (one containing a screen figure), while keeping all of its attributes (color, line weight, being editable, etc.). I can't seem to find an option to do this. Is there? If not, is there another workflow in PS that you can recommend for this type of procedure?

Thanks - I used the Layer > Duplicate command and it worked great!
P.S. How do you drag and drop a layer? I tried dragging a layer to the other open image, but nothing happened. Do you have to hold down a specific key for this (I'm using Windows)?

  • Duplicating a layer from one doc to another

Is there an easy way to copy a layer, with unlinked text boxes on multiple pages, into another InDesign file, while retaining the position of the text boxes on each page?
I’ve got a multi-lingual document, with multiple layers (one for each language), in which I am duplicating the files and exporting as an INX file for text to be translated through Trados. Each INX file only has that language in it, and all other language text boxes and graphics are removed.
Once I receive these translated documents back, I need an easy method of bringing these languages back into the original file, replacing the un-translated text that was originally on that layer.
I was hoping to simply drag the translated layer into the original doc, or find an option under “duplicate layer” that would allow me to specify which document to duplicate it to, so that I could remove the original/un-translated layer and then this new/translated layer would just take it’s place.
Any advice would be much appreciated!

Well, if I wanted to be prickly and literal, I'd simply say "InDesign." I do think that it's one of the best applications available for circumstances such as you describe. What I'm advising against is using layers in ID to have a single file with, say, 4 languages in it. If you used that technique in Quark, or Illy, or even Publisher (does Publisher even have layers? I hope not), I'd still say "You should have a whole bunch of files, one for each language." You have a multilingual file with a number of different multilingual documents stored inside, and I think that this is a bad idea because I have never seen a TM/CAT app that plays well with a file with this kind of structure. If you're not using TM tools, it's not that bad, but your first post was all about "How am I going to roundtrip this doc through Trados" and, sadly, the answer is "You're going to break it out into a whole bunch of monolingual files, because that's what Trados expects."
There might be an argument for the layer-per-language method, but I genuinely can't make it. It always introduces more problems than it solves, EXCEPT in a case where a) there no TM tools are being used, and B) a "graphic designer," admin assistant, or generic flunky is involved that has bad file hygiene and is not skilled at keeping track of the languages and revision dates of many monolingual documents stored in many monolingual files. In that case, my advice is "Fire the flunky and hire one with good file hygiene." If the flunky is related by blood to the CTO, and is therefore unfireable, then I'd advise the DTP staff in question to use layers to store the various translations, so that the file-hygiene-impaired flunky only has one file to manage.
Now that I've gotten the I-wish-it-was-fictional rant out of the way:
    1) If it's 32 pages long, I'd far rather use InDesign. Multi-page layouts in Illustrator are a pain. But you should work in whatever app suits your workflow and working methods. If you're expert in Illy but novice in ID, then I'm torn between saying "Use the app that you know!" and "What a great time for you to get to know ID!"
    2) Frame vs. ID is a matter of taste here, I think. It depends on how you want to do the "varying layouts and lots of graphics." It's been a while since I used Frame, but I recall that I spent a lot of unhappy time wrestling graphics and text flows to look okay.
    3) What if you already have this stuff in a multi-layer multilingual doc, and what you really need to do is to incorporate it into your TM? If you're required to hand off a single doc with one layer for each lang, then I'd seriously suggest looking into scripting the task. Or, if your workflow can handle refried PDFs, then make yourself a batch of monolingual InDesign docs, do your alignment or whatever it is you're doing in Trados, and then make PDFs of all of the final monolingual docs, and then place those into the language-specific layers. Basically, this is a cheat that says to the person taking receipt of the layered file who requires the localization staff to do more work than is necessary: "I cheated because you're making me do 2x the necessary amount of work for no good reason."
I'd love to hear an explanation as to why this one-lang-per-layer method is a good idea. Maybe there is something I'm missing...
