  • Is it possible to connect an external drive to the time capsule that I could use to store and access my primary iTunes files?

I would like to move my music files to an external drive that my iMac iTunes could access wirelessly and I'm wondering if it is possible to do so through connecting a drive to my Time Capsule.

This can be done....but if you move your iTunes Media folder to the drive that is connected to the Time Capsule, you might first want to think about how you will backup these important files.
Time Machine cannot backup the files back to the Time Capsule, so you will need to use a commercial backup application like Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper to copy the files back to the Time Capsule drive.
As long as you plan to add a hard drive, you might want to consider an alternate plan:
Connect a hard drive directly to your Mac using USB or FireWire and move the iTunes Media Library there. Then, Time Machine will back up both your Mac and the hard drive, so you have original copies on one drive and backups on another.
Whatever you decide, be sure to follow the correct instructions to move the iTunes Media Folder. You cannot simply drag and drop.

  • Hi, is it possible to turn off wi-fi of my time capsule?

Hi, I read an article that wifi electro-magnetic emission may be dangerous for children's health. Therefore I would like to use wired connection and turn off the wireless feature of my time capsule. Please let me know if it is possible and how I can do it.
Still I would like to use the time capsule as a wired router and backup storage facility for my desctop.
One additional question - if it is not going to be possible to turn off the wi-fi, is there another alternative to turn off the time capsule reather than disconnecting it from the socket? Is there an alternative power cord with turn on/turn off switch? Any ideas?

Hi, I read an article that wifi electro-magnetic emission may be dangerous for children's health.
There will always be a silly article about anything... if you read it.
I can understand your concern, but Pastenague already pretty much summed up most of what I was going to say. BTW, I would not be surprised if that author is the kind of hypocrite who goes out in the sun all day, or hangs out in cigarette smoke filled rooms.
Electromagnetic waves are everywhere, man-made and environmental. After well over a decade of testing, it's never been proven ... all these 'scare claims' that tend to hit the media. I still remember what started it all, back when someone was diagnosed with cancer after shortly getting a cell phone, and he heard about someone else who had cancer and also had used a cellphone.
OMG... Therefore, cellphones MUST cause cancer, and the electromagentic waves are carcinogens!
They're still trying to prove that.
There are far more things to worry about health wise, than the EMFs.
BTW, in regards to that author, I have my own article to submit to them. And I can even back mine up with facts:
A study has shown that given a long-enough time-line, EVERYONE who drinks water in their life, eventually dies.
Another study has shown, that 100% of people who currently are diagnosed with cancer, have drank at least 1 cup of water in thier life-time.
Another alarming fact has been raised recently, that the harmful effects of water is not just restricted to humans. For example, a study of deceased adult cows at various farms, has shown that there was water-content in all their carcasses.
There is a strong lesson to be learned here. Stay way from water or any product bearing H2O at all costs!

  • Is it at all possible to connect an external HD to a time capsule into the USB port

I am trying to connect an external drive into USB port of a time capsule to increase capacity. How does one get this done?

You normally need a powered hub.. the TC is notoriously underpowered USB. Even if the USB drive is powered.
The USB drive should be formatted fat32.. poor.. or HFS+.. hugely better.

  • Is it possible to erase the existing data on a time capsule and start over?

The licensing agreement for the time capsule allows a one time transfer of the product and I have the opportunity to get a lightly used one from a friend but can find no information on erasing existiong data and starting over.  Can it be done?

Wow, that was quick — thanks!  Being computer illiterate is a major pain!

  • Is it possible to take a wireless signal into my time capsule, and use the LAN connections?

    Hello everyone,
My wife has a clinic behind our house, that does not currently have a hard wired ethernet connection.  We are wondering if we can use our old 2nd generation time capsule to pick up the wirless signal from our home, and then use the LAN connections on the back to tie her credit card/debit machine into?  If we can't use the time capsule is there anything out there that would allow us to accomplish this?
    Thank you for your time

We are wondering if we can use our old 2nd generation time capsule to pick up the wirless signal from our home, and then use the LAN connections on the back to tie her credit card/debit machine into?
Yes....IF.....the wireless network in the house is provided by another Apple wireless router. In that case, the Time Capsule can be configured to "extend a wireless network". When it does this, the Ethernet ports on the Time Capsule are enabled as well.
If the wireless network in the house is provided by a third party wireless router, there is a special feature only present on the AirPort Express that would allow it to be configured to "join" the wireless network. When it does this, the Ethernet ports are enabled on the Express.
As you might imagine, the Ethernet signal is only going to be as good as the quality of the wireless signal connection between the house and the clinic. As a test, take a laptop out to the clinic and see if you can get a good Internet connection that way. If you can, then an AirPort should work well for you.

  • Is it possible to view wireless user data usage through Time Capsule

I am currently running my Time Capsule connected to my internet router to provide wireless internet access to my household.
We have 5 members in the family, all with their own wireless devices (1x iMac, 2x MCP's, 2x iPhone 4's, 1x iPhone 3g, and 2x iPod Touch's).
Have recently found that our internet usage is going through the roof, and need a way to view actual data usage and time by MAC address to ascertain who the data culprit is.
Is there any that this can be done through the AirPort Utility on the TC?
Any help would be much appreciated.

  • Is it possible to set up Time Capsule on one network and then access its stored data (movies) using Back to My Mac from another network that also has Apple TV to play them?

I recently purchased a Time Capsule to store data at my office.  I have an Apple TV at my home that I would like to start using to play my movies.  With the storage of the new Time Capsule, I am curious if I can somehow store my iTunes movies on the Time Capsule at my office and then use Back to My Mac to access the TC from my home and then play them via Apple TV.  Does this sound possible?  We have an iMac at the office that remains on 24/7 connected to the TC.

ATV cannot play movies from the TC, even if it is on your home network.. ATV is a streamer.. it is not a media player.. and the TC is a dumb as a board hard disk in a router.. so it has nothing in it either.
You cannot play movies from ATV without itunes, which streams to the ATV.
If the iMac is running 24/7 then you should be able to connect to the iMac remotely and run from iTunes on that, which could then play movies stored on the TC.. with the following issues.. if you use wireless on the iMac forget it. The iMac has to be ethernet connected as it has to pick up the movie on the library and play it back to the TC to network to your home.
The next issues is speed of slowest connection.
Your download to your home maybe great.. what is the upload speed from your office like??
If you pay for uploads and downloads you will pay for the movie 3x.. first to download it.. second to upload it.. office to net..  and third to download it again.. net to home..  Sorry but it is better to play the movie directly from online itunes store.
If you plan to try and play non-itunes movies over the connection, it won't work.. ATV as stated is linked to itunes and cannot play movie files.
Overall this sounds like you need to think it out a bit more.

  • Is it possible to use my time capsule built in hard drive as a airport disk for my home network instead of just a back up with time machine?

I am setting up a new wireless office system for at my job. We have 5 employees and are looking for a wireless hard drive system for us to dump files on and pull files from. We plan to use dropbox for things we are currently using/modifying but would like a wireless hard drive to store our older and completed information/projects on so we can still access them if necessary without using up all of our dropbox space. I'm looking at either getting the new airport extreme and just hooking up a lard external hard drive to it or getting the new time capsule.
I am wondering if it is possible to use the built in hard drive on the time capsule as a wireless hard drive for collaborating/accessing instead of just as a time machine back up? If so then it seems to make sense to buy the TC w/ 3tb hard drive instead of buying the extreme and a larger external drive.

Yes, it is. Note that both the original and backup copies of a file shouldn’t be on the same drive, as it may fail at any time.

  • Is it possible to increase the internal hard drive capacity of my 500GB time capsule?

I have a 500GB time capsule bought 2008.  I am now backing up two laptops to it, a macbook pro and a macbook.  It is likely that soon their combined data will outstrip the capacity of the time capsule.  (I increased the internal hard drive capacity on the macbook recently to 640GB).
Is it possible to add to the internal hard drive capacity of the time capsule?  If so, do I just source extra capacity from a third party supplier as I did for the new hard drive for the macbook?
    Any experience or advice appreciated.

It's possible to pull the hard drive from the Time Capsule case and replace it with a larger capacity drive, but you might want to keep in mind that since Time Machine will "see" this as a "new" drive, it will make a complete backup of both computers to start and then backup incrementally after that.
If you were thinking of transferring the existing data on the 500 GB drive, that is possible as well.
But, you will not be able to tell Time Machine to simply continue backups to those same files. For that reason, it might make sense to look for a separate drive enclosure to install the "old" drive in case you need access to your older Time Machine backups.
After a few months, you may decide that you really don't need all the old Time Machine backups on the old driive and you may decide to simply erase the drive and use it as a spare.

  • Running a network with Time Capsule and Netgear router - is it possible?

We have an iMac and a Toshiba laptop. I was wondering if it was possible to have a wireless network with a Time Capsule and our Netgear DG834G router. We live in a solid brick house and the Netgear router is upstairs and we find we get very little, if any reception from downstairs. We have just purchased the Time Capsule and we were hoping to move the Netgear downstairs and have the Time Capsule upstairs to get reception all over the house. Is running a network like this possible, and if it is, how do we do it. Both the iMac and the laptop need to be able to connect. Thanks in advance.

  • Is it possible to host sites on Business Catalyst without purchising Creative Cloud membership?

Hi, gotta quick question. I've started designing a few sites in Adobe Muse and have been hosting them on external servers that the client already has a contract with.
I like the idea of hosting on Business Catalyst but I don't really see the need for the Creative Cloud features as I already own all the Adobe Software I need.
    So the question is this:
Is it possible to host websites with Adobe Business Catalyst without a Creative Cloud membership and if so, how do I achieve this?
    Thanks in advance

    Hi 'Phunction',
There are a number of options for you. You can become a Business Catalyst reseller and host your clients. Or you can host with one of the existing Business Catalyst partners, like us . No need for a Creative Cloud subscription.

  • Domain Name & Hosting the Website

I have made a website for an event I am planning in March. Is there a place on Apple where I can purchase my domain name and host it there? or should I be using another place? I need it to be as cheap as possible...but still be a good place for hosting my website.
    Ideas?

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
Is there a place on Apple where I can purchase my domain name and host it there?
No. Apple only provides hosting via MobileMe. If you want to purchase a domain name then go to a domain name provider like HostExcellence.com or GoDaddy.com. Both offer domain names and hosting services if you'd like to keep them all together.
If you host on MMe these AD topics and Apple documents will give you info on how to set it up:

  • Hosting a website on BT infinity

    Hi,
Can anyone tell me if BT infinity (residential) includes web space for hosting a small website (My present ISP provides 50MB which I currently use, I want to know if I can transfer my site to BT if I get infinity).
Also, I presume it is possible to host a web site on a server on your own premises if you use dyndns to get over the "no fixed ip address" problem.
    Thanks

There is a "legacy" web server for BT internet customers.  Some details of it can be found here: http://www.btinternet.com/~firststop/shortcuts/webpage.htm
But this web server is barely supported these days.  Don't expect the Indian call centre to know anything about it, and don't expect any meaningful support for it.  Generally, if something goes wrong, you have to wait for a techy at BT to find out there's a problem via this forum or the BT newsgroups, and look into it.

  • XServe Performance Questions: Will it help me host a website full of videos

    Hello,
I am thinking about buying a mac server (xServe) to host a website full of books, text, images and videos freely available all around the world.
My concern is that I am not sure if buying an xServe (basic configuration) will help me do that. I am afraid the xServe performance will not be able to do all this task. According to you xServe and Mac OS X Server? Is it possible.
Lets say I posty a video, 720x480, MPEG-4 or DivX or Quicktime format, 1000kbps video quality of around 20 minutes each in many pages of my website, if using a xServe, how many people approximately around the world will be able to stream the same video at the same time? I know that streaming videos thoghout the Internet does need a **** of an equipment, so that is why I must know more about xServe great performance, cons and pros.
Should I buy an xServe if I want to do this? I have also add another idea. By website could be hosted by my own xServe (basic configuration), but I could depend on Google Video, YouTube and specially Stage6.com to hosty my videos on their servers and then I can just put the video embed on my webpage and my xServe won`t need to ''worry'' hosting these videos. Is that a good idea?
I am new to this thing, so I am asking for your help. Another thing that concers me is, can I have 2 or 3 external hard drives (from 250GB to 500GB) connected to the server though USB or Firewire and host some files of my website there?
Now, should I buy a Mac Pro, a 24'' inch iMac or a xServe to host that site? Which one do you think will do the job better?
Thank you for helping me reading this and hope you can help me. Sorry for the long lost. Its just that buying an xServe may be a huge thing to do and I need to know if its a good choice.
    GB
    iMac 20" - Intel Core Duo 2GHz, 1.5GB RAM, 128MB ATi Radeon X1600, 2.5TB of HDs   Mac OS X (10.4.9)   Internet High-Speed connection - 10MB

Your problem is going to be bandwidth more than server capacity.
The XServe can handle many simltaneous streams, but if your network connection is too small you're going to fill that pipe way before the server runs out of horsepower.
You say you're using 1000kbps video streams (which is very high...?). At that rate you need to colocate your server(s?) at a commercial datacenter where you can get a gigabit ethernet connection to the network. A single server won't be able to saturate a gigabit ethernet link, but you should be able to manage several hundred megabits, depending on the data flows.
As for storage, forget FireWire or USB. They're not up to the task. XServe RAID would be my suggestion. At those kinds of file sizes you'll be relying on disk performance a lot, so throttling all your data through a USB or FireWire bus is just asking for trouble.
