Is it possible to improve a G4 ibook on Tiger 10.4.11?

I have had my ibook for years and has been great but has become slow and difficult to use. (OSX 10.4.11, 1.42 GHz PowerPC G4, 1GB DDR SDRAM)
Software will not update anymore and Firefox browser in particular is now out of date and causing issues with gmail etc.
I could update to OSX 10.5, but the disks on ebay are not cheap - would this upgrade even improve things at all? or is here really no point?
I do lots of image editing and it struggles with the files sizes now too. Would it help to transfer most files off the harddisks to free up hard disk memory.
The ram is apparently 1GB.
I really don't have the money for a new Mac and would love to keep this going a bit longer. ANY help with improving its performance would be much appreciated!
Thanks

You may need to start a thread of you own and include the technical information about your iBook G4 such as the build year, hardware specifications, total capacity of the iBook's internal hard disk drive, installed RAM total, and if you know it, the available free-space remaining in the hard disk drive. Disk Utility could help, as could Activity Monitor, for finding information on the system hardware details.
If the computer has all the RAM it can use (according to MacTracker.ca or other spec source) and a large enough capacity of unused free space in the hard disk drive, it could be capable of running Leopard 10.5.8; but you would have to get a retail install disc through Apple online or by phone through Support since it probably is not available in their store. A call to the main Apple support may be worth a try should you want to upgrade the OSX to 10.5.8 if the computer you have is able to adequately run this version.
Interest in these older notebook portable and pre-Intel based Macs has slowed, so replies may be long in arriving. Other forums have disappeared over the past five to eight years, too; those had good exposure.
Hopefully this helps somewhat.
Good luck & happy computing!

Is it possible to improve the LMP Bluetooth in iMac from x4 to x6

It can only be swapped out for GPU chips that were available for that model at the time.
The only two options were a 256 or 512 VRAM ATI GPU.
If you have never done any type of computer or Mac hardware upgrades before, the tear down of an iMac is not for a newbie or novice to take on a DIY project.
If your GPU went bad, you will need to bring your iMac in to an Apple Store or Apple authorized repair center to have the iMac's GPU replaced by qualified Apple technicians.

  • Is it possible to completely disable Keychain Access in Tiger?

Does anyone know if it is possible to completely disable keychain access in Tiger? As part of security policies handed down from our corporate office, I need to be able to totally disable the ability to save/store any kind of passwords for servers, email software, other software, etc. Thanks!
    Misc.   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

This might be away around it.
    Additional Notes on Protecting Keychains
For laptops it may be advisable to store all keychains on a portable drive, such as a
USB flash memory key or a portable FireWire drive, if allowed by organizational
policy. The portable USB key can then be removed from the laptop and stored
separately when the keychains are not in use. Anyone attempting to access data on
the machine will need the laptop, the USB device, and the password for the keychain
stored on the USB device, providing an extra layer of protection if the laptop is stolen
    or misplaced.
To use this capability, move all keychain files to the USB storage device and
configure the Keychain Access application to use the keychains in the new
location. Remember that the default storage location for keychains is in each user’s
Library/keychains directory, but that the user may have stored keychains
elsewhere as well. To move a keychain to a portable USB drive (or to any new
    location):
    1. Start the Keychain Access application.
    2. If the drawer showing the user’s keychains is not open, click on the Show
    Keychains icon to open it.
    3. Click to select the keychain that is to be moved.
    4. Pull down the Edit menu and select Change password for keychain
“X”..., where X is the keychain being moved.
    5. Click on the Details arrow to display more detail about the keychain.
    6. Note the Keychain Location and click Cancel.
    7. Pull down the File menu and select Delete keychain “X” where X is the
    keychain being moved.
    8. In the window that appears on the screen, select Delete References. Do not
delete the files; only the references should be deleted here.
    9. Open the folder containing the keychain as noted in step 6.
    10. Copy this file to the new location, such as a USB keychain drive.
    11. Drag the original file to the Trash.
    12. Choose Secure Empty Trash from the Finder menu to delete the file.
    13. In the Keychain Access application, select Add keychain... from the File
menu and open the keychain file that was moved. The keychain will appear in
the list of keychains in the Keychain Access application.
The system will now access the keychain file in its new location.
While this is for Panther it should be the same for Tiger.

  • Is it possible to speed up an iBook's video speed?

    Hiya -
I've got an iBook G4, 1.2 GHz, OS 10.4.11, 125 gb HD, 1.2 GB RAM, usual 32 MB vram.
Thing is, the video speed isn't quite what it used to be. YouTube vids used to run just fine, about 2-3 years ago. Now, of course, it's choppy at best. Ditto Hulu and pretty much any other online video.
I seem to recall something from years and years ago, back in the Classic days, of how you could let the graphics use regular RAM to supplement the vram, something like that - the end result being that it would play smoother than before, kind of a speed bump for the video.
Or maybe I'm thinking of something else.
Anyway, I was wondering if there's a way to do something like that in OSX, artificially increase the capability and speed of the video playback.
    Any thoughts?
    Thanks.

As far as I know, there's nothing you can do.
You may want to try other browsers and see if performance improves.
Hulu is very resource intensive, and even my MacBook and my mother's 6-month old Toshiba notebook sometimes struggle with videos there.
The issue is that these websites use Adobe's Flash plug-in to deliver the audio & video, and Flash is becoming more and more resource hungry as the years pass. Your iBook just isn't up for the task.

  • Possible N70 Improvements

Overall I'm happy with my new N70, but there are a few things that I think could easily be improved in a future firmware version. If you have others, perhaps you could add them, or if I'm doing something wrong, let me know! (Most of them are things my 6230 did, but I can't do now)
    1. Use Radio or mp3 as alarm tone.
    2. Option to turn off Nokia tune on switch on. Useful when in quiet places or when you don't want to advertise your phone to the world!
    3. Full functionality with CK-7W using the Pop Port connection.
    4. Name order of contacts only applies to list. If you choose first name first, last name is still first on messages, and when searching, they are displayed correctly, but surnames are searched first, eg. searching for "S" brings up "John Smith", then "Sam".
    5. Option to turn off long message warnings. I've been sending long messages as multiple SMS since the olden days (3310), why start warning me about it now?
    6. This may not be possible due to hardware orientation of the sensor, but how about a fullscreen camera view finder, which actually takes landscape pictures when you hold it landscape, and portrait pictures when you hold it portrait?
    7. Not sure if this is correct, but I've read the jpg compression has been increased, so the overall quality of the higher res. pictures is lower than that of the 6680, to keep the size down. How about more quality options, so we can get the full benefit of the 2MP camera?
Sorry for the mammoth post, but I think thats it ... for now!

  • Is it possible to install Panther on Ibook G3 Graphite?

I installed 10.2 on the ibook. That worked and is working fine. I then tried to install 10.3 without updating to 10.2.8. The installation seemed to go well, but it would not complete the start up. It went from gray to blue screen but the finder would not load and show on the desktop. The screen was not frozen.
Will 10.3 work with the G3 Ibook with 320 ram and 366 mhz?
Will updating to 10.2.8 first and then installing 10.3 possibly work?

    Hello Again Charley!
Does your iBook meet the Panther System Requirements
    Additional Panther System Requirements,
and Mac Model Compatibility & Requirements For OS X?
Are you using the Panther Retail Version CDs?
You haven't posted the size of your HD, and how much space is available?
Is the RAM original or added? Panther is very discerning about type of RAM.
If you have added RAM, remove it if the original amount is at least 128 MB.
Try the install again. If the installation is successful, you can then try to re-add the extra RAM.
Did you run Repair Permissions after the installation?
Also, see if anything here You see an empty, blue screen, helps.
    Good Luck!

  • Possible to update from old iBooks Author file using new version?

Will the just-released new version of iBooks Author allow me to update an existing book which was created with a previous version of the software?
I created a book in landscape mode, but placed all of the images in portrait orientation. Now that there are portrait-only templates, I want to redo the book. Will I be able to replace my book on iBooks without having to relist it?
The new iBooks Author description states the following: "And to keep your work current, add updates by publishing new versions of your original title. iBooks will automatically notify your readers that there’s a new version of your book ready to download."

    nanobear:
Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Do you still have the original library on our old Mac? If so, connect the two Macs together so you can manually copy the iPhoto Library folder from the old Mac into the Pictures folder of the new iMac. download and run BatChmod on the iPhoto Library folder with the settings shown here, putting your administrator login name in the owner section and Staff in the group section. You can either type in the path to the folder or just drag the folder into that field.
Now launch iPhoto and it should inform you that the library will need to be upgraded. Select OK and the library will be converted to the latest version.
What version of iPhoto were you running on the old Mac?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Is it possible to improve the quality of an MP3 file by converting to aiff?

    itunes 11.0.4 (4)
I am contemplating the costs/benefits of purchasing digital downloads of mp3/mp4 files instead of purchasing actual cds.  I am aware that the MP files are compressed and are thus lower quality.  I have already purachased some digital music, from Amazon, and am now burning cds.  While creating playlists and burning, I noticed the option 'convert to aiff'.  I did this with one album.  I now have doubles of each track of that album, the original mp3 and the converted aiff.  The aiff file size of one song, for example, is 71MB compared to 12MB for the mp3 version.
Did my aiff conversion do anything to improve the quality of my mp3 files?  If so, to what extent? E.g., how close is the quality to that of a cd?  The added file size of the aiff must represent some difference.  I am asking because I am skeptical that my converting an mp3 using itunes could improve the quality of that with which I began...i.e., the mp3 file.  Is this conversion effectively 'uncompressing' the mp3?
If an aiff conversion increases quality, I see no reason to worry about mp3 compression.  It would make sense, economically, to purcahse mp3s and then convert to aiff, saving time, money, and transportation costs.
Finally, is there anyway to convert to aiff just for the purpose of creating one playlist and then burning so that I do not have to maintain double files in my library?  Thanks for answers.

All you accomplished by converting the file to AIFF was to make the file much larger. As AnaMusic said, there's no way to put back the information that was lost during the process of compressing to MP3. If you want CD quality, you'll either need to buy the CDs and import them yourself or see if the album is available through one of the download stores that sell music in CD quality or better, such as iTrax, HDTracks or eClassical. They've only been able to license a small subset of what's available, but you might be fortunate.
    Regards.

  • How is it possible to improve iMovie quality in black areas?

The movie looks fine in preview, but there are a lot of compression artifacts in dark areas when exporting it (720p)

I was putting together different videos already recorded so I couldn't improve the quality of the sources... Manual export with setting bitrate to 5mbs helped a little, even though the output video is still not as good as the preview video. I guess that's the best iMovie can do for now...

  • Is it possible to improve the poor quality of DVD's?

I started my presentation in Keynote and exported the file as a quicktime movie (high quality). I then moved the quicktime movie into iDVD and when I previewed the project, the quality looked crisp...so far so good. I then proceeded to burn directly to DVD and the quality was, for lack of a better word, crap. I tried creating a disc image and using Toast but unfortunately it's not rearly as sharp as it was within iDVD.
This has been bugging me for about weeks now. I've been reading the discussion boards for a while and haven't found a solution to my problem. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi,
I'm also a very frustrated user experiencing the same problem with iDVD 6. This was not seen when I was using iDVD 5.
I've made a .dv file with imovie 6.0.1, and upon "Sharing" to idvd, I didn't see any drop in quality during preview. Its only when I've the DVD disc image file where iDVD compresses the .dv format to mpeg2 that a significant loss in video quality can be seen.
I've also tried out different methods of encoding the .dv file using other software:
    1. Toast 7.0.1 : Same poor quality mpeg2
    2. ffmpegX : I tried tweaking different settings, (video bitrate, etc), but only very insignificant improvements were seen. ( Anyone out there with success in finding the right combinations of options, please post reply!)
    3. JES Deinterlacer : I don't think the problem lies with interlacing, as I don't see much improvements here either.
Anyway, has anyone checked out this website:
    http://www.kenstone.net/fcphomepage/idvd_6stone.html
I've actually contacted the website owner Ken Stone via email, asking him if he has seen this problem. He replied to me that he did not experience quality loss since he did not work with imovie.
I'm pretty baffled here, as I thought the problem clearly lies with the process of dv to mpeg2 encoding, and not the software that was used to create the movie or .dv file?
Anybody out there has a workaround or a definate solution?

  • Is it possible to automatically push an iBook inside the bookshelf?

    Here's the scenario:
my company is producing some iBooks with iBooks Author
those iBooks are made only for company's employees and are of course free
we need a solution to push (over the air) those iBooks inside the bookshelf of the iBook app into the employees' iPads
this process should be transparent for the users/employees: ideally they switch on their iPads and find the iBooks on the bookshelf of the Ibook app
iBooks store is not an option because information in iBooks is reserved.
After a lot of rerearch I've not yet found a solution to do that (i.e. using an MDM or other tool).
Do you have any suggestion please?
    Thanks
    Guido

    Hi Guido,
What about creating a private iTunesU course? Then your employees could download the iTunesU app, join the course and then enable "automatic updates". Then the books would appear and download automatically when added to the iTunesU course by the course instructor.
    Hope this helps,
    Jesse

  • Is it possible to improve scores with large collections? Advice please!

Hi, I have about $7000 in collections from Natl Crysis from broken apartment leases due to job cutbacks and job loss in 2014. I've been able to increase my scores out of the 490s now to the low 500s since June. I was able to get an auto loan through Toyota Financial (miraculously!) and payments start on the 15th of this month. I have a secured card through a credit union but it only reports to Experian and Transunion. I've been declined for pretty much every other secured card I've applied for...which I didn't know was possible, but still have a couple options left like OpenSky. Fingerhut is reporting positively as well. Assuming from here on out I pay my bills timely and maybe open one more secured card, can my scores continue to increase? Or will the huge amount I owe in collections hold me back until they fall off in 5-6 years? I've got some other small collection accounts around $1000 total that I could pay off if that would help but the ones from Natl Crysis I've pretty much decided I can't pay any time soon since it's just such a large chunk of money even if I settle. What do I do?

  • Possible design improvement.

In OS X the minimize button (yellow -) is right next to the close-window button (red x). With a slightly careless mis-click, it is easy to close, say Firefox, which deletes all the existing tabs. I realize that Cmd-H could be used instead of the minimize button, but I really prefer a GUI.
Also, sometimes a pop-up window appears so that two close-window buttons overlap, and with the magic slate, or whatever it's called, it is very easy to click twice and inadvertently close the backmost window.
That's probably considered a minor frustration, but it could be easily fixed in several ways, so I'd like to suggest that.
Hopefully Apple won't take this suggestion as an attack on them, because it's a legitimate technical suggestion, and I'm weary of having my posts here deleted.

  • Possible to improve DVD ripping?

    Friends,
I have a late-2009 imac i7 w/ 12gb RAM, OS X 6.8.2.  My graphics card is an ATI Radeon HD 4850 512 MB.  Whenever I rip a dvd, the fans eventually start blowing hard and the unit heats up.  I'm not concerned but I am curious.  If I had a newer machine, with a different "more powerful" graphics card or processor, would the machine strain less to perform the ripping?  I'm not looking to buy a new machine (too much) but would the imacs be any better at the task?  Or would they also work hard to rip the dvd?
    Thanks!

    DC Steve wrote:

They will would work just as hard. This is one of the most processor-intensive tasks and will demand maximum performance no matter what Mac you have. A newer one will be faster but the difference might not be significant to you.
