Is it possible to increase upload speeds?

My upload speed is reported as being 0.31mbps by BT's own speed tester, and checking with speedtest.net gave a somewhat similar 0.34mbps today (though this moves around a lot between 0.05 and 0.25 normally).
Is there a way of boosting this?  
I've read about line speed capping, is this something that folks know how to verify?

Are you connected to the test socket? With your attenuation and a good line i would expect a connection speed in region of 13mb. Your upstream speed may well increase to .8/1mb at the next reset

  • How do I increase upload speed?

    How can I increase my upload speed to match my download speed? Currently getting 15Mbps dowloan and only 1.9 Mbps upload. Road Runner says its an issues with the router and not their network. I've alread powered down the router and disconnected it from the modem. I've plugged everything back in and noticed an increase in upload speed, but not download speed.

    Upload speeds are never the same as download speeds for home broadband. Road Runner (whatever that is) is incorrect.

    I want to increase the fan speed because my dv5 1045tx gets too hot. On idle my  cpu ranges from 45Cto 55C  and my gpu stays at about 60C. When I play any game(like cod4 on highest and lowest graphics settings) my laptop's gpu goes up to 91C to 98C and cpu going to about 80C to 90C. Old games like prince of persia warrior within bring my cpu up to 95C to 98C. Without being able to increase fan speeds, I lost my freedom of playing games. Can someone please help?

    Many times a laptop overheating is directly related to the cooling of the processor. The main culprit is the fan. The fan sucks in air from the bottom and blows it out the side. It will also suck in hair, dust, and other debris. That stuff often gets trapped by the heat sink and over time builds up in a layer which chokes off the cool air going to the processor making the fan work harder.

    What I recommend is getting some canned air and blowing out the vents in the side and bottom of the laptop. If after doing this you still have problems with over-heating, and your laptop is in warranty, you can take your laptop to a HP Authorized Service Center and ask them to clean the fan and heatsink.     If it is out of warranty, consider searching for the maintenance manual for your specific model, in the manual there are schematics for taking apart the laptop. Cleaning the fan is much easier that removing a motherboard, so don't feel to intimidated by the idea. Also you can remove the heatsink and then remove the thermal grease and apply a new layer which also helps alleviate heat related issues.

  • Possible to increase broadband speed?

    I'm currently on BT Unlimited and our speed currently averages about 6mbps. I did a speedchecker test and at some point in the last few months we can apparently get between 10-17mbps which would be a massive upgrade considering there are 8 people in my house.
    While I'm at it, I have an issue with pings. My house has quite a few people using the connection at once; is there any way to throttle the traffic on the connection to protect the ping and quality of the connection rather than push all the data through at once causing high pings?

    Hi to answer the second part of your post first there is no way to throttle your connection

  • Since regrade no increase in Upload Speed? Is this...

    Hi all,
    My BT Infinity has now been upgraded to the 80/20 service for just over a week. The download speed has doubled from 35 Meg to circa 70 Meg. But the upload speed is stuck at circa 7 Meg, which is good but it hasn't increased from the 40/10 service. I would expect the upload to be circa 14 Meg. Is there a reason why? Is there anyway to increase the upload speed even at the expense of download speed?

    Try the upload speed test at http://mcslhr.visualware.com/myspeed/myspeed_line_capspeed.html.  The bt tester grossly underestimates upload speed, especially if you have significant latency.  It was giving mine as around 6 or 8, when a proper tester (as above) or a good real site was giving 17.  
    If you have problems with the capspeed tester above (it sometimes has Java issues), http://speedtest.net/ still suffers a little from underestimating upload, but not nearly as badly as the BT tester.  It gave 12 or 13 at the same time I was getting the above results.
    Now my line and latency are improved the differences are there but smaller: capspeed 17.0, speedtest 15.7, BT wholesale 13.7, BT retail 9.17.

  • Has B.T increased there upload speeds

    I was wondering if B.T has upped there upload speeds, none of my friends have actually received the increase and as i don't have B.T Infinity myself yet i can't check either. My checker says this:
    Your cabinet is planned to have WBC FTTC by 31st December 2011. Our test also indicates that your line currently supports a fibre technology with an estimated WBC FTTC Broadband where consumers have received downstream line speed of 32.9 Mbps and upstream line speed of 13.3 Mbps.
    Was just actually wondering if anyone has actually received a significant speed increase of their upload? or is this going to happen at a later date?

    I noticed the other day my telephone number checker result upload had changed from 6Mbps to 11Mbps.
    I don't think anyone will experience the extra speed yet! as the 10Mbps and 2Mbps upload caps will still be in place.

    hi im on adsl max but the upload speeds are terrible
    is there anyway of getting the upload speeds increased like i did recently with my download speeds?

    That's as good as it gets with adsl max. It's likely to double when you are upgraded to 21CN; you may be able to get info about that at SamKnows. FTTC would achieve a much greater increase.

  • Very low Upload Speed. How can I increase this?

    Hi there, new to the forums with my post.
    I'm a frequent online gamer and have the Bt unlimited package as a result. However over the past month I've been experiencing high latency spikes or just high latency in general upward of 1000ms. Naturally this makes any form of gaming impossible. During this past month I've conducted many speed tests and only recently discovered that my upload speeds are ridiculously low, ranging from 0.02mbps to a maximum of 0.06mbps. I believe this is what is causing my lag issues.
    My question is. What can I do to resolve this and raise my upload speed to an acceptable standard?

  • Possible solution to slow upload speed

    After my old home built rig died I built another. Speedtest.net consistantly showed at least 75/75 with old rig and new one was 85mb down and only 35mb-40mb upload. Having seen this in the past I explored. Old rig used onboard Atheros network interface card (aka 'NIC'), new rig has onboard Realtek NIC.
    Problem: Slow upload speeds but only after computer has been unused for a period of time. We all do this.
    Note: Every single Windows install by default has "'Power Management" turn off the NIC when not in use. To disable NIC power down go to driver properties "Power Management" tab and uncheck all boxes.
    After ruling out the obvious - Your PC, Router and Verizon tests, and have flushed your browser cache and DNS, here is the most likely problem causing intermittent slow upload speeds:
    TEST 1: Upon complete computer reboot (not sleep or hibernate) up and download
                  speeds are ok.
    SYMPTOM: Computer first powers down (after whatever minutes power settings are set
                        at) and is then woken up.
    1) Newer Realtek NIC drivers have three settings of interest under the 'Advanced' tab.
           1a) "Energy Efficient Ethernet" Default is 'Enabled'. Set to 'Disabled'.
           1b) "Green Ethernet" Default is 'Enabled'. Set to 'Disabled'.
           1c) "WOL & Shutdown Link Speed" Default is "10 mbps First" Set to "Not Speed
                  Down".
    2) Problem occurs when computer sits unused then NIC powers up again to the "10
        Mbps First".
    3) Though the NIC will eventually uprate to higher speed, it will start at lower rate thus
        causing the problem.
    4) My old Atheros NIC driver did not have the driver settings to save power and the
        Realtek one did.
    5) Other NIC manufacturers may or may not have driver based power settings. At the
        very least go in the "Power Management" settings and uncheck boxes so NIC never
        powers down.
    Common problem many do not think of in todays 'instant gratification' society. This happened way back in Win 3.11/95 days and continues to this day in all Windows OS's.
    Hopefully others find this useful. And yes I shared this with Tech Support for their peer review process. Even if this works for some not all this is a common problem many tend to forget.

    Did it make any differnce to your speeds?
    I have had this same issue on 2 systems for a year or so.  Both have the same realtek nic built in on the mobo - Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller.  Both systems have the same issue with speeds.  have a 75/75 connection they both show a consistent download of around 83 and upload varies between 5 and 15.  I've tried changing drivers and got the same results.  Made the changes you noted and no difference.  I figure it's a mobo problem.  I added intel nics and that made a little diffrence - got the upload speed up to about 30.  As I have other systems that work fine - consistently about 83/85 - I just finally ignored the issue and never bother doing uploads on the defective systems.
    Would be nice to know the answer though.

  • Infinity upload speeds atrocious at 0.67mbps

    Hi,
    We have recently upgraded to Infinity broadband with promised speeds of 36 mbps Download and 9 mbps upload.
    Allowing ten days for the 'settling in' period we acheived the following using BT's own speed test:
    dnload = 34.5
    upload = 0.67
    Ping = 352.50
    This is pretty much the average achieved at different times of day and was also the speeds achieved using Speedtest.net etc all carried out with one laptop on the network via lan cable.
    As you can see the upload is atrocious and the ping speed is extremely high.
    We called BT customer services and after being told that "Upload speed wasn't important" ( Obviously not an online gamer ) we managed to get the agent to accept the upload speeds were not acceptable and they carried out some tests. They said they had found a network issue in our area and another engineer visit was arranged.
    Second Open Reach engineer visit
    The engineer arrived and after a quick chat about what the issue was he set about his work.
    The engineer was working on the job for about two hours before he came back and said he had looked at all of the kit and checked the lines and as far as he was concerned the line passed the OpenReach acceptable standards test plus he was unable to do anything with the Upload speed.
    He gave us a description of what he called "Cable Fill" being the likely reason our Upload speeds never achieve anywhere near those promised, but he did state he had managed to increase our download speed to nearer 40 mbps, the below are now a reflection of the average speeds we are currently getting, as you can see they have actually gotten worse.

    Before we head down the road of complaining to BT I thought posting on the forum may turn up some valuable advice and further possible explanations as to why our Broadband is not achieving full promised speeds.

    Latest as of today
    Girlfriend ( account holder ) phoned BT customer services again.
    Again we were greeted by another scripted robot. Here is what they had to say
    - We were told that 'Upload' speed was not important again and there was nothing they could do about it.
    - They had no idea what 'Cable Fill' was.
    - Told us to turn the hub on/off as often as possible ( we did this and have continued to do this since first installation with absolutely no improvement whatsoever )
    - Only to use Bt Wholesale test ( Common sense surely ? I already use to retrieve the results I post on here )
    - They would call back after arranging another engineer visit
    GF called at 12:40pm this afternoon and we have not yet received a call back - Nothing new, this is about the fourth time this has occured.

    Hello, I'm also in the same boat too, I don't buy the whole Foxtel upload causing this issue too. These are two seperate connections incoming and outgoing which are dedicated. NBN hasn't even been planned in our area yet! High speed cable with adequate down and up speed will be just as good as NBN, so let the consumer decide what they want and don't dictate what we should like. Don't get me wrong, the download speeds are fantastic but it is outrageous to have such a limit on upload when consumers are HAPPY to pay extra!? Come on Telstra, this is worthy of a petition in Change.org. The 4G network reaches speed of 100 Mbit/s and an upload of 37 Mbit/s but the data plans are unfathomable to pay for those who require high volume or large uploads. It's reasons like this that we are still laughed upon by Europe and USA...even the NBN is a joke now that there is no more FTTH. Telstra know this yet they tell us to wait for NBN when they know most consumers who are KMs from the exchange will also experience speed issues. Please Telstra, have some pride with your infrastructure and MAKE SOME MONEY which will also SATISFY CUSTOMERS. It's not rocket science. It seems like you want to avoid adding additional upload ports in the CMTS infrastructure. How about a trial test to see how feasible it is such as a voting system and notify all of your cable customers about it to actually see what the response is from your stakeholders?   • How to improve upload speeds with new Airport Extreme?

    Hi!
    Just plugged in a new Airport Extreme to replace a BT HomeHub 3.0.  The wi-fi download speeds have generally increased over a wider range in the house but the wi-fi upload speeds have dropped to under 1Mbps.
    Speeds to laptop linked via ethernet appear fine (both up & download).
    Initially thought that I may have messed-up the set-up but the fact that the wired connection works fine makes me think this is something to do with the Airport settings - a scary thought as I don't really know much about this stuff.
    As range was really the reason for getting the AP Extreme I'm contemplating plugging the HomeHub back in and just trying to use the AP to extend the old HHub system rather than setting up a new AP system...
    Any suggestions would be most gratefully received!

    ... just a quick note to say that the appears to be resolved after a long telephone call to apple service dept (very patient - very helpful).
    In my naivety I had attempted to revert back to using the homehub (3.0) router and connecting the APExtreme into one of the Ethernet LAN ports but this didn't work!  So called the apple helpline & we went back to basics until it worked.  One point to note that may help anyone finding themselves in a similar position...
    I had followed the instruction to reset the APEBS depressing the button first whilst powered then without power and during the unit being reconnected to power supply thinking tha this would do a full restore to factory defaults (effectively undoing all the messing- around I may have done flounderinng through the settings) but it was only when I was directed to do a full reset through the Airport Utility settings [Edit\Advanced\Restore Defaults] that this worked (for me).
    Download and upload speeds are now up to 93% of advertised speeds wired, & wireless with some fluctuations which appear to be network delivery related rather than anything to do with the APEBS.  It's working well with an APExpress which had been struggling (intermittentlyout of range) which is connected to stereo and Apple TV.
    By the way - thanks to other posts regarding importance of not connecting an audio out cable to phono sockets on the stereo (horrible sound quality) using a redundant CD channel it works great.
    All-in-all, very happy with it so far.

  • Download and Upload speeds have been dropping sinc...

    I have recently been having seriously problems with my connection, every day the router appears to reset/crash, sometimes once and sometimes more than several times a day.
    This was the speed I was getting in December, everything was fine.
    Now this is the speed that I am getting.
    I'm not sure how this is happening but I have been able to confirm that it isn't an issue within my household, there is only have one master socket which the router is connected to along with a wireless phone thats connected to it.

    I see Imjolly was giving you a hand with this on another thread.
    We still need to try and get you connected via the test socket to rule out external wiring and possible swap over micro-filters too.
    I note you mentioned you have an I-plate.  Take this off, as it could be faulty, as you will then see the test socket.  If possible connect up via Ethernet and leave for a day or two and see if this stops the drops. 
    Its also important to look out for other sources of interference.  You can see a list of common offenders on this link.

  • No increase in speed with parallel processing on quad-core

    I'm using the NI Vision vi "IMAQ correct calibrated image" on quite a large image.  This takes about 0,09 seconds to complete, and only uses 1 core of my computer.  (25% cpu time)   I always need to correct two images, so I made two parallel execution lines, expecting that I would get 50% cpu usage (i.e. two cpu's used), and still 0,09 seconds to complete.
    However, it takes 0,18 seconds to complete, with 25% cpu usage.  It seems the code is not executing in parallel...
    I checked the Vision vi, and it's simply a wrapper to a DLL call.   I think I remember hearing once that dll calls are single-threaded...   Is that the reason why I don't see any increase in speed?   Is there a way around this?

    This is no good news then.
    But maybe you can introduce parallelism on your own?
    Depending on the algorithm, you are using, you CAN split up the image on your own and make calls on the algorithm for each fraction and then put the (altered) fractions together to a new image again. I have not tried something like this, so in the worst case, it does even slow things down.
    Nevertheless, if the image is large enough (so "split up" and "merging" overhead is negligible) AND the DLL itself can be called parallel (not sure if this works), you could possibly see some performance increase...

    I have had ongoing issues with my internet connection over the last 18 mouths.Having a upload speed of 450/650 Kbps  very slow no good for gaming an down load of 8/11Mbps down load if more than I needTo the point I have spent good dollars try to insuring   that the infrastructures and the Asset Integrity with in house are in best condition this includes the replacement and work listed belowReplacement of the Wi-Fi system to a Cat.6 cabling at a cost of $2,300Replacement of the modem with a high speed 1G port modem at cost of $ 475Replacement of the fly-lead for the Telstra house connection to the new wall socket a cost of $360Total cost of $3135 this spend was braced on Telstra recommendation as the problem was with my part of the connection after a large number of call to my internet provider I at last had a appointment with a Telstra Tec to carry line testing and fault finding .At this point if no fault was found  I was the be billed at $60 per 15min or part off and travel cost as I live in Bullsbrook WA this may I high . Lucky for me a fault was found in the exchange and reconfigured and the speed and the Exchange improved   to 22Mbps down and 15 Mbps up an outstanding numbers >test at the house 15Mbps and so 5 / 7 Mbps loss for the Exchange to house don’t to good but still very happy with it BUT the upload was 650 kbps /750Kbps and please remember this testing was carry out by Telstra with good equipment so at this point I ask why the upload was so slow? After spending over $2000 and lot of time on the phone only to be told that Telstra slow the upload speed down so the max you can get is 1 Mbps and the only way you can increase this is by paying for a business line but you still may not get any more than 1MbpsThis is only a very small part of the story SO I LIKE TO ASK WHY IS TELSTRA SLOWING ME DOWNIf you like to know more please let me know

    The simple answer is, that's the way the system and hardware is designed, all ISP's are the same. Uploads are limited to around 1Mbps. If you wish to get higher upload speeds you can see if Cable Broadband or NBN are available in your area as these systems allow for higher upload speeds.
    Upload speeds are generally slower than download speeds because of the fact that most internet connected equipment is asymmetric. Asymmetric means that any one packet of data can either go in, or out, but not both ways at the same time. Since most internet users are receiving more data than sending, the internet connected equipment has shifted the higher majority of the signals to go toward downloading.
    If you wish to find out more about ADSL I have added a link to a Wikipedia article below along with the link to the NBN and Telstra websites so you can check to see if Cable Broadband or NBN is available in your area.
