Is it possible to install a discrete GPU into my old 2007 MacBook?

I have an old 2007 MacBook which I recently installed Snow Leopard on before finding out several of the applications (mostly games) that I want to run don't support my integrated graphics. I want to know if it is possible to switch, how I would go about it and how much it is likely to cost me.
Google didn't seem to want to give me any decent results, so I decided to post anew.
Any feedback is appreciated. Xx

No the MacBook processor and graphic card are integrated into the logic board.

  • Is it possible to run "Apple Hardware Test" on an early 2007 Macbook running 10.4.11?

I was just wondering, is it possible to get a version of AHT for an early 2007 MAcbook with 10.4.11? Or is it on the install disk? Pressing D when starting up doesn't do anything so I presume this macbook doesn't have it installed on the HD, I haven't tried it yet with the install disk.
If not, is there any way to download it or run it from another CD? My mum has a macbook pro with Snow Leopard but I've heard I can't run AHT from a different model on this.
I want to troubleshoot my hard drive (something more detailed than a SMART test) and I can't find any other applications for testing drive speed etc, other than xbench which is a confusing and (I've heard) inaccurate tool.
Any chance of running AHT on this?
Or could I put this into target disk mode and run AHT on the macbook pro, to check this HD?

There are testers like Intech's SpeedTools Pro, & Drive Genius, but I think we're barking up the wrong tree!
At this point I think you should get Applejack...
    http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/15667/applejack
After installing, reboot holding down CMD+s, (+s), then when the DOS like prompt shows, type in...
    applejack AUTO
Then let it do all 6 of it's things.
At least it'll eliminate some questions if it doesn't fix it.
The 6 things it does are...
    Correct any Disk problems.
    Repair Permissions.
    Clear out Cache Files.
    Repair/check several plist files.
Dump the VM files for a fresh start.
    Trash old Log files.
First reboot will be slower, sometimes 2 or 3 restarts will be required for full benefit... my guess is files relying upon other files relying upon other files! :-)
Disconnect the USB cable from any Uninterruptible Power Supply so the system doesn't shut down in the middle of the process.

  • Possible to install a new SSD to a 13-inch macbook pro with retina display

I just bought a 13-inch macbook pro with retina display last week from apple. I want to make this macbook a protable workstation, so I upgraded the RAM to 16G. I also purchased an Samsung 1T SSD 840 EVO, which is suggested from most of the web, but when I took my laptop apart, the macbook is using a different SSD call PICe SSD, which is much smaller than a normal SSD.
Not sure if anyone has encountered the same issue? Is it possible to upgraded the SSD in this case or have to stuck with it?
    Thanks

    stevenwang480,
your 840 EVO can’t be installed in place of your PCIe SSD. In theory, you could upgrade your MacBook Pro’s PCIe SSD with another PCIe SSD, but the availability of third-party PCIe SSDs is nearly (if not actually) zero at this time. In the interim, you could put your 840 EVO into an external enclosure.

  • I installed iWork in my old 2007 macbook can i transfer it to my new 2011 mac pro?

my old mac has a broken screen so i cant see what im doing

Use the install disks or redownload it from the Mac App Store if you originally got it from there. If you need to copy files off the MacBook, use FireWire Target Disk mode if possible.

    Hi,
You mention that you tried a different USB port, did you try a USB 2.0 port?  If not it may be worth trying this when Chkdsk has completed.

  • Is there any way to instal 10.4.7 server into a June 2007 Macbook Pro 17?

I downloaded the 10.4.7 universal server release disk image and burned it onto a dvd, but my MBP 17 won't boot from it. It says it can be used by any intel computer but for some reason MBP doesn't boot. It's a Santa Rosa 2.4 Ghz MBP and I don't know how I can install 10.4.7 server on this machine.

Minimally, this Macbook Pro system requires Mac OS X 10.4.9, per [article 303315|http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303315]. That written, you can get Mac OS X Server 10.4.7 to 10.4.9 or 10.4.11 using the Mac OS X Server 10.4.7 Universal installation DVD that you should have and an upgrade sequence described over in [article 305537|http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=305537] and in [article 302960|http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=302960].
I'm not aware of a download for Tiger Server that's open; what's available works in conjunction with the installation DVD.
Alternatively, the 10.5 Leopard Server DVD can be an option.

  • Can NOT install "Installation Disc" ---OS 10.5 --- on 2007 MacBook

Trying to reinstall the OS on my Granddaughter's MacBook. It is a late (December)2007 model White MacBook. Model 3.1
I am trying to reinstall the OS by using the Installation Disks that came with the MacBook
    Disks are OSX version 10.5.4.
However, when I insert it to install I see a onscreen prompt to select the language and I select English.
Then briefly I see a prompt that says "Preparing Installation" that is followed immediately by _*"Mac OSX cannot be installed on this computer"*_
I am baffled by this, what do I do now ????
I checked the hard drive and it is 100% readable by removing it and then using MacDrive on a PC and as an additional try I also formated it using MacDrive too.
_*Can anyone PLEASE help me out of this DEAD END!*_
My Apple/Mac experience so far is POOR!
    Thanks,
    Joe

Mac OS X 10.5.4 was released in June 2008. By June 2008, the Macbook 4,1 was the production model. So if your granddaughter's MacBook is from six months earlier, its install discs were an earlier version.
If what you're holding are gray discs that say 10.5.4, those are install discs that shipped with some other computer, not the MacBook in question, which is why they won't work.
You have a few choices: 1, call Apple Sales (800 MY APPLE in the US) and buy a full retail package of Leopard from them ($129). 2. Call AppleCare (800 275 2273 in the US) and, with your serial number, you can request replacement install discs specific to that MacBook, probably for a small fee. 3. But a new retail version of Snow Leopard ($29 in the US) and install that.
It would be good to back up your granddaughter's data before installing.

  • My friend has a new number, is it possible to merge new imessage conversation into the old one (where the old number was used) to avoid losing old messages?

    can anyone help?

I remember a friend of me and myself once swapped our sim cards, because something was wrong with hers. We wanted to check if it was related to her iPhone, or the sim card.
Anyway, so I had her sim card in my phone, and some messages appeared on my phone, mixed up with my other messages. It was only a few, because she had just gotten the phone.
One of the persons is a girl who we both know, and her messages to my friend merged in the same conversation as my conversation with this girl.
I just checked right now and I actually never had messaged to this girl, only phoned. So the first messages of her on my phone are those of my friend. But I messaged this girl later, and those messages went into the same conversation.
So I'm not sure now, but maybe if the contact info is exactly the same, it may work?
I think the most important part is that you still have them!

  • Choosing notebook with Sandy Brigde processor and discrete GPU

    Hi!
I'm looking for new notebook. I have 2 candidates, both are Sandy Bridge so I am afraid that Arch will have problem with GPU.
My first candidate is Lenovo IdeaPad y570. Specification is:
    i7 2630QM processo
    HM65 Express Chipset
nVidia GeForce GT 555 discrete GPU with optimus
Lenovo has a button to switch off and on discrete GPU.
My second candidate is HP ProBook 6560b with following spec:
    i5 2520M processor
    HM65 Express Chipset
    AMD Mobility Radeon™ HD 6470
I don't know if it is possible to switch off discrete GPU in BIOS
What should I expect from these laps? Which one is more likely to work with less problems?
I do not need discrete GPU since I won't play games. I just need fast and stable laptop for heavy development and long lasting battery. But flickering, low resolution or any other problem with X.org should not happen.
    Thanks!

I know this is not one of your candidate, but with the price range of both of your candidate, you should choose
either thinkpad X220 or T420, 12inch and 14inch respectively. Since only thinkpad support the tp_smapi package
which provide the battery_threshold feature that lets you stop the battery from charging, which result in longer
    lifetime of your battery.
You can also install TLP which provide more battery saving feature, And most of all it just works.
Try to refrain from buying the Edge series, at least in my experience the LCD is botched after 1year+
of usage, maybe it is one of those 1 in a million thing, but it is hard not to mention the fact.
    Then again it's your choice.

  • Possible to install msata drive in probook 4330s WWAN slot?

    Hi,
Can someone verify if it is possible to install an msata SSD into the WWAN slot of a probook 4330s and use it as a OS boot drive?
If it is possible, is there any information on how to install this and how to enable the boot option.
    Thanks.

    Hi,
Your PC has a hard drive cage that will accomodate two drives.  This HP How-to document starting at Removing a Drive a hard drive will show you the process for removing the hard drive cage.
If you still want to use the Expansion Bay then you will need a 5.25" to 3.5" adapter bracket. NewEgg.com would carry such a bracket.  You will also need a SATA data cable.  This HP How-to article will give you an idea on how to use the Expansion Bay for a 5.25" device.  Check up by the existing optical drinve for a spare SATA power connector.  If one is not available then you will need to use a SATA power splitter.

  • Possible to disable discrete GPU on MacBook Pro?

Hey all, I have a Mid-2014 Retina MacBook Pro with dual GPUs. I've got most everything set up just right (enabled powersaving on CPU/IGPU, disabled bluetooth/webcam/sdcard, etc), as such I have switched from the NVIDIA graphics to Intel Iris Pro by chainloading the apple_set_os.efi patch through GRUB, removing the nvidia driver, and installing the Intel one. Now, I need to know if there is a way to completely power down the discrete GPU, acpi_call-git from the AUR does not work. Any ideas?
    Thanks?
EDIT: I use gpu-switch, a utility for MacBooks that lets you specify which card you want to use on next boot. I am not sure whether this completely powers down the other card, I don't think it does since it still shows up in lspci and I still have bad battery drain. I will check vgaswitcheroo. I have the Intel GPU working, but I want to fully power down the other one to prevent battery drain.

    Hy there,
you can try it with this entry (gfxcardstatus) in the wiki if and only if you have OS X on a bootable device!
    https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/MacBookPro10,x
I did that on my MBP early 2011 with the defekt AMD / ATI card and it works great!
BUT ATTENTION you need the 2.2.1 Version of that program!!!!!
Earlyer or later versions WONT work!!!
    Here you go: https://software.com/mac/apps/gfxcardstatus/2.2.1
Hope that helps in the first place (i know it is quick and dirty....but it works)
P.S. if you want t know the status of the GPU's you can do it with that :  cat /sys/kernel/debug/vgaswitcheroo/switch
comes from the ubuntu wiki: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Hybri … switcheroo
Let us know how it works

  • Is it possible to completely disable the discrete GPU?

My discrete GPU is damaged, and the computer keeps getting Kernal panic whenever it uses it for a few minutes. I have to stick to the integrated GPU, but the computer keeps switching to the discrete GPU and causing my computer to crash. Is there some kind of Terminal command I could use to disable it?

    Use gfxCardStatus > http://gfx.io/

    Any possible solution?  Thanks!

    Hi,
Thank you for posting in Windows Server Forum.
Initially please update MRD MAC to v8.0.10. From description it seems that issue related to MAC side compatibility issue, so suggest you to contact apple customer care and clarify for further research.
Thanks for your understanding and Support!

  • Is it possible to install previous TRIAL versions of previous versions of Adobe Creative Cloud Software?

Look, I'm just testing the trial versions right now.  Don't try to troubleshoot something that I don't ask; this is what I'm looking to accomplish:
Is it possible to install a trial version of any of the Adobe Creative Cloud software in a previous version?  By that, I am referring to the following:
I want to install a trial version of Adobe Premiere Pro CC 2014; NOT Adobe Premiere Pro CC 2014.1.  If you notice, I want to reinstall a trial version of the previous release.  Don't ask why, you'll just laugh for my stupid reason, but I'm merely wondering if it is possible.  Creative Cloud now only offers trials of the newest versions, and I want to install trails of previous versions for my own, personal reasons.  Is this possible to do with creative cloud, or must I do it some other way?
Is it also possible to obtain the physical installation files so that I won't have to always go through creative cloud to download them again (and then I can just set it up without being connected to the internet)?
