Is it possible to install a firewire bus in a new (2010) unibody macbook?

Hi,
I have been offered a good deal on a firewire audio interface but unfortunately my macbook doesnt have any firewire ports. I have tried it out using a firewire/USB adapter with a powered USB hub but the macbook just disables the port saying it is drawing too much power. Is there any way i can install a firewire bus in my macbook? or is there some kind of adapter/cable that would solve the power problem?
Thanks

No.

  • Need Help Installing Windows 7 64-bit on new 2010 MBP

I just bought a new 2010 Macbook Pro and love it, but Windows is giving me headaches.
I am trying to install Windows 7 Professional x64. I downloaded the installation iso from MSDN, burned it to a disk, and successfully booted from the disk. However, when it starts actual installation, I get this error: "a required CD/DVD device driver is missing". It asks me to find the driver, and won't let me continue with installation. Any ideas?
    Some things on my mind:
    - Maybe I actually need a driver? Where can I find it?
    - Maybe my CD drive is faulty?
    - Can I do a bootable USB drive?

never mind, my iso file was corrupted

  • How do I do a clean install of Snow Leopard on a mid 2010 13" MacBook Pro

    Hello All,
I am replacing a dead hard drive without any backups (I'm fixing someone else's computer), so I want to do a clean install.  When I boot the retail Snow Leopard DVD, I get a kernel panic.  Is this the wrong DVD?  I don't have the original DVD that came with the Macbook Pro, so I don't know what version it's supposed to be.
Specs: mid 2010 Macbook Pro 13" with nVidia 320, Intel Core 2 Duo, and 4GB RAM.
The kernel panic had me thinking maybe I had bad RAM, but I've already swapped out the RAM with same results.
Any tips would be greatly appreciated.  Thank you!

    Thanks, Niel.
Apple Support sent me a Snow Leopard DVD 10.6.4 - not retail, but the original one that came with the MacBook Pro.  However, I did not get a chance to use it, but I'm sure it'll work.
What I did instead was to make a USB thumb drive of Mavericks 10.9.2.  It installed without any problems on the 2010 MacBook Pro.  No kernel panics, etc.  Thanks for your help.

  • Installing a Firewire port into a G3 IMAC

A G3 CRT IMAC with OS9.2 was donatd to our little cable TV station.
It has USB ports, but no Firewire ports. However there seems to be some sort of access expansion hatch.
Question: Is it possible to install a Firewire port on a G3 IMAC of this vintage?
We do community TV and would like to use it as a simple off-line editing computer.
    Thanks,

If this is a tray-loading iMac, you might still be able to find one of Sonnet's Harmoni processor upgrades which also includes a Firewire port. But it's probably not worth the money unless you could find one really cheap. Newer iMacs with Firewire ports show up on eBay regularly for under $100.00, and eMacs frequently appear well under $300.00.

  • Install Final Cut Pro 5.0.1 on a macbook running Version 10.6.8?

Hi, is it possible to install Final Cut Pro 5.0.1 on a macbook running Version 10.6.8? I know it works on Macbook 10.5.8. Please help. Any information or advise will be appreciated. Thanks

    Thank you Shane Ross.
I needed that affirmation to move on to Plan B. I have also tried installing Final Cut Express on Macbook 10.6.8 and it just didn't accept it. And yes it is an intel.
    Cheers and thanks again.

  • Is it posiible to install FCS 3 on a brand new iMac (with topped specs)? It will come with Mavericks and that might be an issue....

I'm wondering if it is even possible to install the FCS 3 on brand new out-of-the-box Mavericks OS.... I need FCP 7 for my work. I allready installed FInal Cut Studio 3 on my Mavericks MacBook Air, but that OS was an updated one, from the previos version. It works greate (rendering is a nightmare though :-)).
The thing is that i have read meny post about People unable to Install Finac Cut Studio 3 on a brand new - not updated - Mavericks....
Will i I be able to install Final Cut Studio 3 on a brand new iMac with Mavericks out-of-the-box?

    Yes,
I have friends who have FCS 2009 (aka FCS 3) running on 10.9 machines from fresh installs.
Be aware that if you use a third party output device (Kona, Decklink, MXO, etc) you must have the updated drivers as well.
One friend had such issues with his Blackmagic Intensity card in a MacPro that he went back to an earlier OSX to find stability.

  • Overloading the Firewire Bus?

I am having troubles with having a Canon GL2 video camera being plugged into my iMac G5 via Firewire and a LaCie 250 GB external harddrive being plugged into my iMac G5 via Firewire at the same time. If they are both plugged in via Firewire at the same time, my iMac either a) freezes up thinking, b) doesn't detect my Canon, or c) doesn't detect my LaCie. I spent many hours speaking to Applecare and LaCie tech support and the only sound reponse I got (which was from LaCie) was that I was overloading my Firewire bus. Is this truly what's wrong? If it isn't give me your input and how to solve this thorn in my side, and if it is, tell me how can I transfer video smoothly from my Canon to my LaCie through some other means.
    Thanks in advance.

Have you been able to transfer Canon to internal drive directly, or are you trying to send it through software to the FW drive indirectly with some form of compression etc. Also have a look at any La Cie software possibly installed and disable it. You dont need it to run a FW drive generally speaking and it may have interfering preference settings. My thoughts only, cheers.

  • Possible to Install Leopard on External HD and Boot on Another Mac?

Is it possible to install the Leopard upgrade DVD onto an External HD, AND THEN use the external HD to boot Leopard onto another Mac? Also, since the upgrade disc is an "upgrade," would I have to first install Tiger onto the External HD?
    If possible...
Am I able to create an External Boot Drive that can boot both onto a PPC Mac and also onto an Intel Mac? Or will I have to create separate partitions?
Lastly, can Intel Macs boot from an External USB Drive? Or are FireWire Drives required? Thanks!

Yes, you can install on an external drive and boot the Mac. I do it all the time.
I'm not 100% sure whether the same drive can boot PPC and Intel Macs -- I don't think so because PPC macs require Mac formatting and Intel Macs require GPT formatting to boot.
Intel Macs can boot off both USB and Firewire external drives. PPC Macs can only boot off Firewire external drives. In any case, Firewire is better as it's quite a bit faster.

  • Is it possible to install OS X on an old iMac G3 (350MHZ)?

    Hi,
I have an old iMac G3 (350 MHz) running with OS 9.0. Since a long moment, I have problems on the net because I can't upgrade Netscape or Explorer anymore. So, it seems that I would run an OS X to be able to install Safari or something like that an surf well. My questions are:
    - Is it possible to install OS X on my old computer?
    - If yes, what do I have to do and how much can it cost?
    - If not, is there any solution to keep my old machine and make it usefull on the net?
I don't khnow a lot about computers and I don't realy want to spend a lot of money to buy a new computer for now...
    Thanks a lot,
    Chouchouchat
    PS
I can read English better than I write it, but I am more comfortable with French for technical instructions...

Just to reinforce what Denison said. Your firmware must be 4.1.9 if it's not you must upgrade the firmware from within OS 9 before you bring any OS X (10.2 and above) installer near your machine:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=86117
I moved away from OS 9 to Panther for exactly the reasons you have. I did it about 3 years ago and I was using iCab at the time.
Around here, Chicago, someone sold a Panther installer for $20 last week on Craig's. Make sure it's a Black one with silver lettering.
I have all my kids on iMacs 2 400s and 1 600. They're all running 10.3.2 upgraded to 10.3.9. They play all those kids games Nick and Club Penguin. The older one has the faster machine and uses GarageBand, lays his own tracks and watches YouTube all the time. I also dropped a DVD player in it so he can watch DVDs.
BTW you can drop a 400 board in your 350 (FireWire) and even up to a 500 easily. A 600 or 700 will require mods to the heat sinks. I've done that on 4 machines.

  • Is there a way to manually reset firewire bus(ses)

I'm running Logic Studio (9) through an mLan Presonus Firestation and Yamaha Motif Rack XS. I have an addition al firewire card installed attached to a Focusrite Liquid Mix. The system is stable but isn't so flexible. If I change sample rates by mistake or change devices in the wrong order, the mLan system loses sync with the computer. The ONLy way to get the sync back is to close all of my audio programs and REBOOT the mac. This of course disturbs my workflow. Is there a way to reset the firewire bus(ses) through a software option without rebooting ?

I am having this same issue now but on a desktop. I have Tiger on one hard drive and Leopard on the other. I did a resetting of the NVRAM and I got my external firewire drives back - in Tiger. However when I restart up in Leopard 10.5.8 the drives will not mount, they show up in profiler so I know they are there but Leopard does not like firewire on my mirror door dual 1.25, but they all worked until a few days ago. This is my office computer where I do my student grading and other organizing, so I need my externals. Should I dump Leopard as I think I should and just go back to using just Tiger?

  • Is it possible to install OSX on another computer via Target disk mode?

    Hey there...
a friend of mine has an older iBook. the drive on this iBook is broken (snapped off) so there's no way of using it.
is it possible to install OS Panther from another computer (use OS X panther install running on a MacBook, or G4) targeting the iBook via Target Disk mode?
    thanks!
    -

    Hello Again SCHPiLKAS!
As roam posted, you cannot use the Intel MacBook install discs, on the PPC iBook.
    Additional info in these links.
Using OS X Install CDs/DVDs On Multiple Macs
What's A Computer Specific Mac OS X Release
Software Update, Upgrade: What's The Difference?
If the iBook meets the Panther System Requirements, and the Additional Panther System Requirements, and you have a Full Retail Version, of the Panther Install CDs, you can use Firewire Target Disk Mode, to install the system.
The Panther discs should look, exactly like the images in the above links, and not say Upgrade, CPU Drop-in DVD, or "This software is part of a hardware bundle purchase - not to be sold seperately." on them.

  • Is it possible to install Panther directly onto ibook w/ OS9

Is it possible to install Panther directly onto a clamshell ibook with OS9, or do I have to install the various versions of X prior?
    PM

    Hi Paul,
if your iBook meets the 10.4 System Requirements (e.g. Built-In Firewire, 256 MB RAM,...) then you can directly install 10.4 without going through all the previous versions. However, be aware that you cannot use the install disk that came with your MacBook Pro!!! These are hardware specific and also specific to the Intel-CPU.

  • Possible to install arch on a system with Broadcom wireless?

My netbook has a broadcom BCM4313 chipset. Kernel module: brcmsmac. The latest arch installer can't properly configure my network and I don't have a wired connection at this location. The system keeps spamming messages like this on the terminal every few seconds:
    ieee80211 phy1: wl_ops_bbs_info_changed: qos enabled: false (implement)
    ieee80211 phy1: brcmsmac: wl_ops_bss_info_changed: disassociated
ieee80211 phy1: wl_ops_bbs_info_changed: arp filtering: enabled false, count 0 (implement)
Is it even possible to install arch linux on a system with a broadcom chipset? Or is the kernel too old, should I use another module?
    Thanks for your help!

treadlefish could you post the wifi info from "lspci -vnn"? Then I can check if we have the same card.

  • Unkown Device Showing up on Firewire Bus when nothing is connected

I have a brand new G5 dual 2.3 Ghz PowerPC not INTEL pci-e and when I go to the System Profiler and look under the Firewire Bus page it's indicating that I have an Unknown Device connected when in fact I don't have anyting externally connected. I do have two Digidesign PCI-E Audio cards installed but I can't see how this would be considered a firewire device. Anyone else have this problem or ideas on this? Thanks!

    Glad to be of service.
