Is it possible to install a SSD without SATA to USB cable?

I am in the middle of installing a SSD into my Mac 2012. Unfortunately, the SSD did not come with a SATA to USB cable. I looked and couldn't find this cable in any nearby stores. Is there a work around? If not, I'll order one but thought I would ask you smart cookies first.
FYI, I have already did a back up on my time machine.
Thanks for the help.

No, but you will be restricted to USB 2 Speeds.

They're available now, although it's going to be a hefty price premium compared to mechanical hard drives. Right now SanDisk is only selling to OEMs (probably without a manufacturer's warranty). I'm not sure about Samsung, although I have heard of them being available for single-piece sale and warrantied by the seller. Crucial.com is supposed to be releasing them. The only ones I'm sure is being sold and warrantied by the manufacturer are from a company called Super Talent.
    http://www.supertalent.com/products/ssd-commercial.php?type=SATA
It should be as easy to install as any other 2.5" SATA drive in a MacBook. I've replaced my drive myself, and it's about as easy a job as I think they could have made it. You would need a #00 Phillips screwdriver (3 captive screws on the RAM shield), a T-8 Torx screwdriver (four Torx screws holding the mounting bracket to the drive), and a coin (to remove the battery). Everything I understand about these SSDs is that it's pretty much transparent to the drive controller. It communicates with the drive like any other SATA drive and can do pretty much anything that could be done with a mechanical hard drive.

  • No bluetooth in my G500 and is it possible to install a SSD in place of existing HDD?

Started a new Thread as per your suggestions
This laptop is bought on Thanks giving day from best buy and I'm not sure if there is bluetooth, from beginning, I'm using Wifi. As per the website and maintenance manual there exists a bluetooth. This is no good for a brand new laptop. My friends already cautioned me from buying items listed in thanks giving sale as they are either faulty or rejected items. But this laptop is not listed in the sale and hence I bought it. But I'm not happy, as the lenovo website lists bluetooth but I'm not sure if the laptop has bluetooth. The customer support too insists me to send laptop to lenovo for a refit or replacement. But I'm not interested as I need to move on and I can't wait till I get a replacement.
Now I will try based on your suggestions!
    1) I will check in Drivers folder for anything that says bluetooth - NO. But the maintenance manual says bluetooth is integrated with Wif-fi. Today I'm trying with Ethernet card.
    2) I will make sure I will download the drivers for bluetooth and model from below link
    http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/downloads/detail.page?DocID=DS035531
I will  Hook up my ethernet cable. Now should I directly start installing the drivers to detect bluetooth or should I reboot my laptop
    3) Can I install a SSD in addition to my existing HDD (somewhere in web it says to enable TRIM functionality too)?
or is it possible to install a SSD by removing the existing HDD?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    hi  beswaminathan,
Usually, if a machine comes with a bluetooth device, you can check it under Device Manager > Bluetooth (a generic Windows driver will used if there's no OEM driver installed- see image below).
Looking at the spare parts, the one below is the Wi-Fi card that has a built-in bluetooth for this model. If you have a different Wi-Fi adapter, it's possible that it's Wi-Fi only. Try to search the specs in google and observe.
    WLAN LITEON WB225 1X1 BGN+BT4.0 HMC
For the SSD, there appears to be no slot for an mSATA or M.2 (NGFF) SSD at the back side. You will need to remove the stock 2.5" HDD and replace it with a 2.5" SSD.
    Link to picture
For TRIM to be enabled on an SSD, you will need to re-install Windows in AHCI mode and follow these tips and tricks..

  • Is it possible to install a SSD on a 2009 iMac

I'm trying to find out for my dad if it's possible to install a SSD for a 2009 iMac.  He lives in a small city where there aren't any authorized Apple Service Providers, but there is a Best Buy.  However, the people at Best Buy don't even know how to open an iMac.

It can be done but it should be done by a professional. If your Dad doesn't have an AASP locally then he may be able to have a company such as OWC (www.macsales.com) do the work for him. Doing this type of installation is not for the faint of heart and should be done by someone intimately familiar with the internals of an iMac.
BTW why is an SSD necessary in the first place?

  • Is it possible to install Fireworks CS4 without other "hang-on" programs?

    Hello gentlemen,
    The question at hand is simple indeed;
Is it possible to install Fireworks CS4 without other "hang-on" programs? Especially Bridge CS4?
See the problem is were running version cue cs3, and we simply cannot shift to cs4, cause VC CS4 is not recognised by bridge cs3. Hairy yes.
Some of us need ONLY fireworks cs4, cause its miles better than cs3, but it automatically installs bridge cs4. And this kind of sucks, cause
we cant use the cs3 version cue server after that.
    Big thanks for your answers!

    It's possible to remove Bridge....

Have you tried removing the unwanted version and then, possibly, installing/repairing to the old?
If you're uncomfortable editing your registry, then WinASO has a good registry cleaner: http://www.winaso.com/ (That's for Windows. Don't know how Macs do things.)

  • Is it possible to install Solaris 10 without burning it onto CDs?

    December 16, 2006
    Hai!
Have downloaded Solaris 10 OS, x86, for downloading onto WINDOWS ONLY Platform - Solaris 10 11/06 Operating System. They are Solaris 10 11/06 x86 CD 1 to CD5.
I don't have a CD writer or DVD writer to burn the software onto CDs and then install it. Kindly let me know if it is possible to install the software without burning it onto CDs.
    Best Regards,
    Kartheek D. N.

Without a jumpstart server you would need to burn the DVD or at least the first CD, then you'ld boot of the first CD and install the initial OS. Once the OS have rebooted after the first install, you can install the software available on the remaining four cd's by mounting them with "lofiadm", "mount" and running the installer on the CD-images.
If you have another Sun system, you can create a jumpstart from the ISO files in a similar way, there is an infodoc which describes how to create an image from the first CD.

  • Reading with SSD X300 Sata to USB Controller

    Hey Guys,
my x300 stopped working so I want to get my data from the SSD of the x300. I bought a Sata to USB cable and connected the SSD to a Windows and a Mac Computer. Both recognize the SSD but cannot execute any operations like reading or writing.
In fact in Windows the SSD is not listed as a hard drive but in the utility manager the SATA-USB Controller appears.
However, probably I am just naive and the SSD is encrypted or something but I don't even know what to google here so please give me a hint on how to retrieve data from this SSD!

  • Is it possible to install an SSD on dv9000 / DV9831CA Notebook?

I would like to know if there is an SSD drive avaialble on the market that will suport the dv9000 or the DV9831CA? My HDD is broken and I would like to install a new SSD on it. If it is possible, with one would you recommend?

    Hi,
I have a HP DV9700t with a SSD as the primary hard drive.
I have tried two different SSDs and they both work without issues.
    OCZ Vertex III 120 GB
Crucial C300  128 GB ---- probably out of production
Some of the newer SATA III SSDs may not be backward compatible so a SATA II SSD should be OK.  Be sure to install the lastest Intel SATA drivers.  The prices are really dropping so you might want to consider a 256 GB SSD. That size should allow you to use the HP Recovery Disks to load the SSD.
The SATA controller in a laptop is not going to perform as well compared to a SATA controller in a desktop PC.  However, you will notice a considerable performance improvement.
    HP DV9700, t9300, Nvidia 8600, 4GB, Crucial C300 128GB SSD
HP Photosmart Premium C309G, HP Photosmart 6520
    HP Touchpad, HP Chromebook 11
    Custom i7-4770k,Z-87, 8GB, Vertex 3 SSD, Samsung EVO SSD, Corsair HX650,GTX 760

    Hello,
I'm trying to purchase inexpensive computers for my classroom. One of the computers I'm looking at is the new $200 HP Stream 11. My school's IT department said it might be difficult to install the district's copy of Windows 7 on these computers if I purchase them. Does anyone know if it's actually possible to uninstall Windows 8.1 and install Windows 7 using an external USB or external CD Rom Drive? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
The District is right to say what they told you they can't install Disctrict Windows 7 on your computer because they have a license agreements with MS and doing so will violate their Terms of Agreement. And you shouldn't be asking something like that to start with. If that laptop can't install Windows 7 it then your stuck with WIndows 8 unless HP has downgrade to go back to Windows 7 on it otherwise if none exist you will not get any drivers or support for it. You best luck is to find a used Windows 7 laptop and order the HP recovery media for it and wipe it clean to factory install and register it to you and that will give you a Windows 7 maching to start with.

  • HT1351 is there a way I can sync music to my iPod without using a USB cable?

Recently, my USB cable for my 4th Gen iPod completely broke. I have a new charger, but it's a socket charger. I want to sync some albums from my iTunes library on my laptop, but I don't have a cable to connect to my laptop. Is there any way I could sync the music from my library without a cable?
    All help is appreciated!

If you read the original post like a good boy, you would see this girl doesn't have a USB cord. The link you sent requires a USB cord. Therefore YOUR reply is actually incorrect.
    Set up syncing
Open iTunes. Make sure that you have the latest version.
Connect your iOS device to your computer with the included USB cable.
    Locate your iOS device.
If you're in the iTunes Store, click the Library button, then look for your device in the upper-right corner.
In the Summary tab, select "Sync with this [device] over Wi-Fi."
She is looking for a way WITHOUT a USB cord. So actually, taking that into consideration, I'M right. At some point in no matter what you do, you need a USB cable AT SOME POINT.
    Thanks.

  • I want to fit a SSD to my 21.5 3.06ghz mid 2010 IMAC; Is it possible to install the current 500gb sata drive into my older 20inch A1224 IMac?

My A1224 20 inch Imac has a damaged HD, so I am wondering if the 500 gb sata drive installed in my mid 2010 imac can be installed as I am looking to upgrade to SSD and would like to make use of the 'spare' HD.
If t.his is not possible can someone recommend the best drive to by for the older mac?
    Thanks

My recommendation for the older drive would be to use it to create a bootable backup, that way you would have 2 backups. Your basic Time Machine backup and a redundant (very good idea for backups!!!) bootable drive. All you need is an expensive enclosure which you can find for less than $30.

  • Is it possible to install Flash extension without using the Extensions Manager?

I am so frustrated with Aodbe releasing new versions incompatible with older versions! I work with Flash CS3. There are many good reasons why I cannot and don't want to upgrade. I have recently updated to Mountain Lion. Everything is good except that the extensions manager 1.8 (CS3) doesn't work on Mountain Lion - it crashes. But all the newer Extensions Managers don't see any older versions of Flash. So basically I cannot install any of the extensions, which are essential to my work!
I am thinking going back to Snow Leopard because of this ridiculous issue. Unless there is any other way to install extensions into Flash CS3...

I am not sure whether the root cause for EM CS3 crashes is the same as EM CS5/5.5 on Mac 10.8. If the root cause is the same and you have installed InDesign CS3 and don't need install extensions for it, you can rename XManConfig.xml under InDesign folder to anything, then EM will not try to import pre-installed extensions for InDesign, EM should start up correctly. If you have to install extension for InDesign, you can remove all pre-installed extensions of InDesign, which should be located in "/Library/Application Support/Adobe/InDesign/Version XXX/<Locale>/Extensions" (I haven't installed InDesign CS3, so the folder may be a little different).
