Is it possible to install kde 4.8b1 from binary?

I've been on a mac for ages and have really grown out of love with it. The KDE 4.9b1 announcement got me moist and thinking again about moving all my computers to linux.
I was wondering what the easiest way to install KDE 4.9b1 would be? I'm not a linux newbie (despite the forum being posted to), I have no problem getting my hands dirty, but I'm still feeling my way around Arch.
Any help would be appreciated.

enable the kde-unstable repository or add it if you haven't already. Also enable testing.

Is it possible to install an iOS upgrade from a computer other than your sync computer? I usually sync to my tower at home, but only have access to my laptop now. My laptop is authorized to the same iTunes account as the tower. If I do a software update for the iPhone on the laptop's copy of iTunes, will it wipe away my music that isn't from the iTunes store, etc?

Yes, but all your data will be replaced by whatever is on this other computer. So if you don't want that to happen wait and install on the computer with which the device is normally synced.

Can't install KDE or GNOME from pacman

When I try to install KDE or GNOME from pacman, the system downloads most or all of the files, from what I can see, and then returns a bunch of errors of the form "gcc-libs: /usr/lib/libssp.so exists in filesystem". I'd post the entirety of the messages, but I can't figure out how to pipe output from pacman without making it impossible to enter "yes" at the install prompt. This problem occurs with both kde and gnome, and from what I can tell it looks like basically the same set of errors with either one.

What does "pacman -Qo /usr/lib/libssp.so" say? It should say gcc-libs and not gcc. I'm guessing you have just installed. Have you done a "pacman -Syu"? The gcc package was split into gcc and gcc-libs.

[SOLVED] Cant figure out how to install kde 4.3rc from official "testi

Well, I'm very new to this and I have lots of questions about Arch and I've been reading lots of forum posts and wiki articles.
Now,I've installed everything in the beginners guide with exception of a DE. And that's because I want to install kde 4.3rc even if the development id not complete yet. I want to install it from official repositories and not from kdemod.
I see there is a kde-unstable repo that I have to enable. But I kind of read that to use it I have to enable testing also and "know how to use it" And well, thats the problem about being new to Arch isn't it? I don't know how to use it nor there is some wiki article called testing.
So I have 2 questions:
How can I "use" testing repo? Are there guidelines to use it or maybe recommendations? I'm thinking about enabling that repo only for kde 4.3 and not for other packages, so, How do I do that?
And also, If I install kde 4.3rc now, whene it is moved to extra in a couple of days/weeks, how should I disable kde testing repo and enable extra again to keep my kde up to date? Will I need to reinstall everything when this happens?
Lol... Those where like 10 questions instead of 2... But maybe the answer is very small. I hope someone can give me some advice.

Hi, I can't answer all your questions but can help you get started.
The file you want is at /etc/pacman.conf so use your editor of choice and open that file. So say I use the vi editor it would be >>>
vi /etc/pacman.conf
If the package you want is in testing uncomment testing repo.
If its at a custom repo put in the custom package repository info at bottom of that file.
Then use pacman -S "package-name" to install what you want.

Is it possible to install Windows 7/8 from a partition on a separate drive?

Hi everyone,
Early 2008 Mac Pro with 10.8.2.
I have two sata drives mounted in my tower--the OS drive and a media drive.
I'm wondering if it's possible to partition 10 or so GB off of that secondary media drive (OS Extended Journaled, GUID), load the win 7 (or 8) ISO and install Windows through bootcamp via that new partition.
Alternately, I have an external USB drive (sata), and could possibly try that same method of formatting off 10 gigs and loading the ISO in a similar manner if bootcamp only checks between DVD media and USB for where it wants to read the installer file.
This method would circumvent the need for a blank DVD or a USB flash drive--both of which I don't currently have.
Does anybody have any experience with this?

I am trying to install Windows Server 2008 R2 Ent edition onto system that has an ASUS M3A78 Pro motherboard with 8GB of memory & an AMD Phenom II x3 2.6GHz Socket AM3 Processor
(X3 710).
I realize that this system doesn't support UEFI but I have an Adaptec 3805 RAID controller in this system that does support the advanced format hard drives, so I would think I should
be OK there.
Attached to the RAID controller are 3 - 1.5TB SATA Hard Drives in a RAID 5 yeilding 2.72TB's of usable space.
I followed the following process to convert the array to GPT.
I booted to the Server 2008 R2 Ent installation DVD.
I select next at the language \ time & currency format \ Keyboard selection screen.
Then I select the 'repair your computer' option at the following screen.
I do not select the 'repair' (default) option, but instead select the radio button above it (I forget what that's labeled) working from memory here - which gives me the option to
launch a command prompt.
I launch diskaprt from that command prompt.
First I selected the disk
list disk (this displays the installed disks)
select disk 0
The I converted the disk to gpt
convert gpt
Then I created 200 MB EFI partition:
create partition
efi size=200
Then I created MSR
partition:
create partition
msr size=128
Then I created primary
partition:
create partition
primary
...and it took remaining
available space to itself.
I assigned drive
letter C to this new first "primary" partition
Assign letter=c
I confirmed the order is:
I confirmed the partition order is:
ESP > MSR > DATA Partition
After all of that I restart into the Windows installation and attempt to install by selecting the newly created primary partition and am presented with an error that states:
“Windows cannot be installed to Disk 0 Partition 3. (Show details)”
and the details show:
"Windows cannot be installed to this disk. The selected disk is of the gpt partition style."
Any help anyone could provide would be greatly appreciated.

Is it possible to install multiple AIR applications from single install?

I've been asked to find a way to install multiple air applications in one install. Is this possible, or am I going to have to use a 3rd party tool like InstallShield?

I guess it's possible to create a meta-installer, which fires up the individual installers using the command line. It's not the ideal way to do this, but it might work.
Sample code to use the command line from within Flex:

Is it possible to install a single component from the install dvd?

My install went very well, however the only problem is that the colorsync utility will not launch. I would rather not do a complete reinstall of the entire system... ( particularly because of my shrinking HD). Can I do this?

Carl, you could try a couple things that may solve your problem.
1) Run "Repair Disk Permissions" using Disk Utility which is found in your UTILITIES folder inside your Application folder.
2) Startup your computer holding down the SHIFT key. Wait for the computer to startup completely, then restart again.
3) Find your ColorSync preferences and trash them. Perhaps a corrupt preference file is not allowing you to launch the app.

This would increase installing speed since all those needed files would be available from Local Area Network, which is faster and my broadband and it also would allow hard drive to focus on installing files instead of current simulataneous reading and writing to same hard drive.

I have a 64GB USB Stick, and I am interested in usign it with time machine. My question is, firstly, is this possible? And secondly, if I do do this, would it be possible to install windows using bootcamp from the same USB. My mother refuses to let me install windows without a backup of Mac OS X, so I really need to know if this is possible???

You need to use a drive that is larger than your Mac's internal drive for Time Machine, so a USB stick will not work. You need to buy an external hard drive. It's worth it. Time machine is a fantastic backup system, keeping not just a single backup, but multiple versions of your files as well (hence the need for a larger drive).

[solved] installed KDE - just one audio output possible

i just installed KDE and uninstalled my former XFCE and Gnome.
i finished configuring my system and now i can only have one audio output at a time.
i'm using phonon-vlc and alsa. there are known issues or am i doing something wrong...?
edit: looks like phonon is the problem... clementine and firefox the same time are working...

i remember having the same issue at one time, but after installing pulse it was ok. i think you have to install alsa-utils as well
although i never used phonon-vlc, try the phonon-mplayer which is much better in my opinion.

A Cloud subscription provides for installing working installations on two machines. You can have mixed operating systems (both Windows and Apple's OX).
