Is it possible to install Leopard this way?

I have a Powermac G4 and the DVD drive is shot on it. I only have an external USB DVD drive and just read that it needs to be installed with a Firewire external drive if I go that route.
My G4 has 2 Hard Drives in it. Is it possible to somehow copy the install disc onto the secondary HD and tell the computer to boot from that volume?

Yes, you can use the second HD, but it needs to be erased. You use Disk Utility to restore the DVD to the internal HD. Do note that since you're using USB, it'll take quite awhile, but significantly faster than making a .dmg file, which isn't bootable and won't be usable to do the installation. Then, after you do the restoration, System Preferences->Startup Disk->select the newly installed restored disk and click on the Restart button. That should boot into the installer.

My HD crashed, the new one (Seagate momentus 7200.2 160 GB sata2 8 mb gfor) is already inside the MBP. But it isn´t possible to install Leopard! "You cannot install Mac OS X on this volume. To enable installation on this volume open Disk Utility menu and repartition this disk as GUID Partition Table..." I have tried to repartition the disk, but nothing happens. What can be wrong?

When you use Disk Utility to repartition the disk--and this will erase everything on the disk, but I assume you don't care since it is new--you need to click the "Options..." button in the partition pane and select the GUID option. Otherwise, it will just repartition it the same way it is currently partitioned, which you've noticed isn't very useful.

  • Is it possible to install leopard from external USB DVD drive?

    Hi all,
I've read through the various posts on the subject and there doesnt seem to be a definitive answer on this. I've got a Lacie USB2 DL DVD drive which I'm trying to use to install leopard on an earlier MacBook Pro (core duo 2.0ghz). I've tried the various suggestions (hold c on boot, hold option key on boot, set dvd as startup drive), and so far been unsuccessful. The drive is just not recognized.
The DVD media is fine(I've got family edition of Leopard), I've successfully installed it on my G5. The Lacie drive recognizes it fine, when I'm in tiger on MBP and insert the disk it is mounted as I would expect. I did try dbl-clicking the install icon as well (in case you were wondering)
So, does anyone have any other ideas for me to try, or should I go and get a refund on the Lacie drive? The guys in the store (Apple authorized reseller, not Apple Store) assured me it would work, so I don't want to look like a clown if it is possible and I'm just doing it wrong
Anyway, thanks in advance for any replies.

    Hi,
Thanks for the reply. Yes the MBP is currently running Tiger, I want to flatten this with a fresh install of Leopard. I can view the install DVD when in Tiger currently.
I haven't tried what you have suggested, but I have seen various posts suggesting this approach. I've also seen several posts explain how to create a partition on an external firewire Harddrive and this seems to have worked for various people.
This would however mean that I didn't really need the external Lacie drive at all, as I've got access to my G5s DVD drive over the network. The more I search on this, the more convinced I am the USB drive was a bad idea.
Once again thank for the response.

  • Possible to Install Leopard on External HD and Boot on Another Mac?

Is it possible to install the Leopard upgrade DVD onto an External HD, AND THEN use the external HD to boot Leopard onto another Mac? Also, since the upgrade disc is an "upgrade," would I have to first install Tiger onto the External HD?
    If possible...
Am I able to create an External Boot Drive that can boot both onto a PPC Mac and also onto an Intel Mac? Or will I have to create separate partitions?
Lastly, can Intel Macs boot from an External USB Drive? Or are FireWire Drives required? Thanks!

Yes, you can install on an external drive and boot the Mac. I do it all the time.
I'm not 100% sure whether the same drive can boot PPC and Intel Macs -- I don't think so because PPC macs require Mac formatting and Intel Macs require GPT formatting to boot.
Intel Macs can boot off both USB and Firewire external drives. PPC Macs can only boot off Firewire external drives. In any case, Firewire is better as it's quite a bit faster.

Oh yeah, forgot about that, I would choose to get a faster internet connection before  I got a new computer so I rarely think that way, thanks.
Well honestly my internet was fast enough for me unit I got a MBP that you had to use the internet to reinstall the OS. Because it didn't come with a $.32 DVD disc.
I have a 50mbps connection, kinda skews my viewpoint regarding internet speed.

  • Can I install Tiger this way?

I've just bought a 300mhz Blueberry iBook with 288mb ram on ebay. I want to install Tiger on it. I have a G4 867mhz Powerbook, can I do the following:
Put a new 40gb drive into the PB
    Install Tiger on it
Then put the new hd into my new iBook
I have the full procedure for removing the hd from the iBook (55 steps in and out).
    Thanks
    Dave

I'm not totally convinced this is appropriate. Apple doesn't support Tiger on iBook 300MHz. Panther is the highest supported OS. The OS X Installer will tailor an install to a particular machine - the one it's been run on - not sure how much though - so you may find difficulties later.288Mb is also really too small an amount of RAM for Tiger if you want to do anything other than Internet/Office use.
However, if you do have Tiger Retail you can exchange the DVDs for CDs and use XPostFacto if you're really keen.
Installing Panther would be much more suitable.

  • Possible to log data this way?

Hello, i was wondering if its possible to have data logged onto a file in the following manner. Essentially, whenever someone starts the program, it'll log data into a NEW file everytime they push start. To make sure the file doesn't overwrite itself, I'll use LV's time stamp feature as a string to append itself onto the name of the file. In the end, everytime someone starts the program, it'll have the name of the file followed by the time stamp which will be saved to some directory.
    thank you.

    Hello,
Here is a simple VI which produces new files in a readable timestamped format which will always save files within the same directory as the VI itself.
This VI saves to a spreadsheet as an example but it could be easily replaced with more file I/O.

  • Installing Leopard Server over Client - is it possible?

I'm sorry if this has been asked before - I searched and couldn't find an answer. Is it possible to install Leopard Server onto a machine that's currently running Leopard client?
I have a client machine and one account (admin) with lots of data files. I'd like to install Leopard server on the machine and retain the account and it's data. What's the best way to accomplish this if the installation won't just "upgrade" it to a server machine.
    Thanks.

You should be able to do an archive and install, preserving user accounts, and that should do it. You cannot have two simultaneous installs though.
There's always the chance of problems, but then again this might not be due to the way you install OS X. I had Open Directory issues with my first installation (format and clean install) because I started some services in the wrong order. Be sure to read up on this board and elsewhere the preferred sequence for starting the desired services on your server.

  • Installing leopard from .dmg file not dvd

i have a mac pro that has 10.4 and would like to install 10.5. The thing is i don't have leopard on DVD it's a .dmg. Is it possible to install leopard onto my 10.4 mac pro without burning a dvd?
    thanks
    jason

Some things to keep in mind:
    1) the only way to install the OS (that I'm aware of) is by using a DVD
    2) the DVD you're using MUST belong to that machine OR be a retail copy. The DVD from another computer will NOT work.

  • Install Leopard on an External Drive on a Snow Leopard Mac Book Pro

    Hi
I have a MBP 17/CTO 2.66GHz i7, which came installed with Snow Leopard.
I've used boot camp to install Windows 7.
I've attempted to install Leopard 10.5.4 on an external drive.
    The steps I've taken:
1 - Connected my WD Passport on the Firewire Port
2 - Partitioned the drive. The first partition is 100GB, Mac OS/X Extended (journal) and I've selected the GUID Partition Scheme
3 - Inserted the Mac OS/X Leopard DVD, and followed the instructions to restart
4 - On restart I have three options. Mac OS, Windows and Install Mac OS\X
    5 - I select Install Mac OS\X.
6 - The disc spins for a few moments and then the laptop freezes
    Beware of the following issue:
1 - On restart more often than not, the DISC will spin and then the laptop will freeze.
2 - To overcome this, restarting pressing the ALT (option) Key.
3 - You should see your boot options. If you do not see "Install Mac OS\X", then eject and reinsert the disc.
The question maybe why would I want to have an Leopard Installation when I have Snow Leopard. The software I develop has thrown up a number of differences between Leopard and Snow Leopard, hence I need both OS's to support my software.
I mentioned this to the Apple Store before I purchased my machine. They put me through to a senior technician at Apple Care, who told me it would be possible to have the set up I am after; and to contact Apple Care if I ran into any difficulties.
After I received my laptop and ran into the problems I described above I contacted Apple Care, only to be told by a senior technician that it should be possible to install Leopard on an external drive, but Apple Care cannot provide any support or assistance.
I really do like the laptop and would much rather not return the laptop; but I really do need the setup described.
Anyway I have tried a number of different approaches:
1 - Having no partitions (so just the single partition)
2 - Trying all three Partition Schemes:
    - GUILD Partition Table
    - Apple Partition Map
    - Master Boot Record
All resulting in the same problem.
I can confirm the external drive does appear as bootable in disc info.
My guess is one of the following is preventing the install:
1 - It is simply not possible to install an earlier version of Mac OS\X than 10.6 on the laptop I have, even if I tried to install on an external drive. This restriction is built into some hardware confirguration. So even if I wiped the internal hard drive or added a new partition to the internal hard drive, I would not be able to install 10.5.4. I say this may be a reason as the second technician told me the CPU has built into it a process which prevents installing older versions of Mac OS/X, but that it should NOT restrict installation on an external harddrive.
2 - When trying to install Mac OS/X, a search is carried out for an external drive which has the correct format. For some reason it may be that this search is not finding my external drive?
I'm a little stuck here and quite disapointed that the support promised by Apple Care for assistance in setting this up, is now not forth coming.
Any help or suggestions would be appreciated, as ideally I would prefer to keep and not return the laptop, it's a beautiful piece of machinery.
    Cheers
    Parmy

    The mystery continues...
I have an older MBP (2.33 GHz Intel Core Duo) which came installed with Tiger. I can confirm I purchased a genuine copy of Leopard (10.5.4) from the Apple Store and it’s not an OEM version. I installed 10.5.4 without a hitch on my old MBP internal drive. It is the only OS installed on my old MBP.
Using my older MBP (which through software updates is now running 10.5.7), I managed to install 10.5.4 onto my external HD (WD My Passport Studio – 640GB FireWire 800).
However; on the final restart, the screen remained grey and 10.5.4 did not boot from the external drive.
I restarted the machine holding down the ALT (option) key, and only two options appeared, Macintosh HD and the Install DVD. I selected the Macintosh HD and opened System Preferences.
In System Preferences --> Startup Disk, I discovered the partition on my external HD which contains 10.5.4. I selected this partition and selected restart.
On restart my MBP displayed a grey screen, and the blue light on my hard drive flashed slowly. I left this for an hour, however; the OS did not start and the screen remained grey.
I then plugged my external HD into my new MBP which I started holding down the ALT key.
To my surprise I found 3 boot options (Macintosh HD, Windows and Leopard). Leopard being the partition on my external drive, which now has 10.5.4 installed.
I selected Leopard, but sadly after 30 minutes, the OS failed to boot.
Although this deviates slightly from this post, I fail to understand the problem here:
1 – Why can’t I boot 10.5.4 on an external drive, from my old MBP? Surely this is not because my old MBP is now running 10.5.7?
2 – Why can I see 10.5.4 as a boot option on my new MBP but not on my old MBP when I start the MBP holding down the ALT key?
I doubt there is a problem with my external drive, as it seems to read, write, etc... in all normal cases.
Whilst it definitely appears that I won’t be able to boot 10.5.4 on an external drive from my new MBP, I should be able to at least boot it from my old MBP, which would give me the option of installing Snow Leopard and Windows on the internal drive of my old MBP.
Apologies for keeping this post going, but I hope by getting to the bottom of this, it will help other Mac users as well.
I’ve run out of ideas of things to try, so I will give Apple Care another call in the morning, and will report back.
Any suggestions of other things I can try?
    Cheers

  • Installing Leopard on External Drive

    Hi,
I have an external drive, ( western digital passport 120GB )
I was wondering if it was possible, to install Leopard on my external drive.. and boot from my external drive so I'll be running leopard from the external.
If so, can someone explain to me how I would do this?
and also, if I wanted to delete the Leopard system from my external drive, how would I go about doing that, so my macbook boots from its own hard drive again ( tiger )
    thanks!

You first have to be sure the drive is bootable. Not all external HDs are bootable.
You will also have to partition it GUID or GPS since you are using an Intel box.
If it is bootable, Leopard will need its own partition, so you would have to temporarily put the other stuff on the drive somewhere else, partition the drive with enough room for Leopard and then put the other stuff in the second partiton. The Leopard partition should have a HFS+ filesystem that is journaled.
    That's about it.
