Is it possible to install OS X on an old iMac G3 (350MHZ)?

Hi,
I have an old iMac G3 (350 MHz) running with OS 9.0. Since a long moment, I have problems on the net because I can't upgrade Netscape or Explorer anymore. So, it seems that I would run an OS X to be able to install Safari or something like that an surf well. My questions are:
- Is it possible to install OS X on my old computer?
- If yes, what do I have to do and how much can it cost?
- If not, is there any solution to keep my old machine and make it usefull on the net?
I don't khnow a lot about computers and I don't realy want to spend a lot of money to buy a new computer for now...
Thanks a lot,
Chouchouchat
PS
I can read English better than I write it, but I am more comfortable with French for technical instructions...

Just to reinforce what Denison said. Your firmware must be 4.1.9 if it's not you must upgrade the firmware from within OS 9 before you bring any OS X (10.2 and above) installer near your machine:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=86117
I moved away from OS 9 to Panther for exactly the reasons you have. I did it about 3 years ago and I was using iCab at the time.
Around here, Chicago, someone sold a Panther installer for $20 last week on Craig's. Make sure it's a Black one with silver lettering.
I have all my kids on iMacs 2 400s and 1 600. They're all running 10.3.2 upgraded to 10.3.9. They play all those kids games Nick and Club Penguin. The older one has the faster machine and uses GarageBand, lays his own tracks and watches YouTube all the time. I also dropped a DVD player in it so he can watch DVDs.
BTW you can drop a 400 board in your 350 (FireWire) and even up to a 500 easily. A 600 or 700 will require mods to the heat sinks. I've done that on 4 machines.

Not only possible, but well documented as well:

  • Is it possible to install a SSD on a 2009 iMac

I'm trying to find out for my dad if it's possible to install a SSD for a 2009 iMac.  He lives in a small city where there aren't any authorized Apple Service Providers, but there is a Best Buy.  However, the people at Best Buy don't even know how to open an iMac.

It can be done but it should be done by a professional. If your Dad doesn't have an AASP locally then he may be able to have a company such as OWC (www.macsales.com) do the work for him. Doing this type of installation is not for the faint of heart and should be done by someone intimately familiar with the internals of an iMac.
BTW why is an SSD necessary in the first place?

  • Why is Facetime installed on my 3 month old iMac for free?

    I'm trying to answer this:
Why is factime installed on my 3 month-old iMac SnowLeopard for free?  Was it the update to 10.6.7 (on a system with the new "facetime HD camera" - not an iSight - that did it?
I have an older iMac where it isn't installed on - and am trying to figure out why?  Both are Snow Leopard.  Why do I have to pay $0.99 when it came for free on a Snow Leopard system?

I would say it is related to the purchase date. FaceTime is included in 10.6.6~8 OEM discs.

  • D'oh! What fool am I - stuck CD trying to install OSX over OS9 on old iMac.

Have just been given a turqouise(?) iMac which was running OS9 perfectly well.
Never having used anything other than OS X I decided to try installing that to the iMac using the OS X install discs that came with my MacBook. What a disaster! So far OS X is not installed - probably no surprise?
On boot-up I get the chimes, then the Mac hangs. The first and last lines of a fairly long message are:
    First Line:
panic(cpu 0 caller 0x002E54BC): Unable to find driver for this platform: PowerMac2,1
    Last line:
    Kernel version:
    Darwin Kernel Version 8.8.3 Wed Oct 18 22:00:38 PDT 2006; root:xnu-792.15.4.obj~4/Release_PPC panic. We are hanging here . . .
And the OSX install disc won't eject. I've tried all the various combinations mentioned on other posts to get a stuck disc out - all to no avail.
Have I wrecked this iMac? Can I fix it - how? Can I get my install disc out without taking a hammer to the iMAc?
Any words of wisdom (and/or admonishment) gladly received.
    Regards,
    David
Black MacBook 2.1, iMac G4, Turqouise iMac G?? Mac OS X (10.4.9) Think I've killed the Turqouise iMac. Shame on me.

The usual remedy for ejecting a CD is to turn the computer off, then start up as usual while holding the mouse button down.
If that works, you should update the firmware on the iMac. This will help:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=75130
After that, try installing X in the usual way.

  • Possible to install HD-DVD Burner in iMac G4?

Hi, I was wondering if it is at all possible to install HD-DVD burner in a iMac G4? Anyone tried this?

I know that Toast Titanium 8 for Mac supports Blu-Ray burning (Apple's loyalties are in the Blu-Ray not the HD DVD camp) but the G4 is not a processor I'd ever want to be encoding HD in. The G4 wouldn't even be up to playing discs. So I think you could do it with a Blu-Ray drive but you shouldn't do it. I hate having to wait whilst an SD DVD encodes HD is at least four times longer. Remember Apple hasn't put a HD spec burner in even it's 8-core Mac Pro yet!

  • Is it possible to install previous TRIAL versions of previous versions of Adobe Creative Cloud Software?

Look, I'm just testing the trial versions right now.  Don't try to troubleshoot something that I don't ask; this is what I'm looking to accomplish:
Is it possible to install a trial version of any of the Adobe Creative Cloud software in a previous version?  By that, I am referring to the following:
I want to install a trial version of Adobe Premiere Pro CC 2014; NOT Adobe Premiere Pro CC 2014.1.  If you notice, I want to reinstall a trial version of the previous release.  Don't ask why, you'll just laugh for my stupid reason, but I'm merely wondering if it is possible.  Creative Cloud now only offers trials of the newest versions, and I want to install trails of previous versions for my own, personal reasons.  Is this possible to do with creative cloud, or must I do it some other way?
Is it also possible to obtain the physical installation files so that I won't have to always go through creative cloud to download them again (and then I can just set it up without being connected to the internet)?

By subscribing to Creative Cloud(Photoshop and Lightroom), does it come with more than one license, and if it does, is it possible to install on both Windows and Apple's OX? Thanks.

A Cloud subscription provides for installing working installations on two machines.  You can have mixed operating systems (both Windows and Apple's OX).

Why it is not possible to install apps on an SD card on a Win 8.1 tablet? If it is possible to install apps on SD card in Windows phone 8.1, why is it not possible on Windows 8.1? What sort of design philosophy you follow that gives better features on

Hi Carolyn, thanks for your quick reply. First thing I did before posting my question was to check the system requirements for Creative Suite, both on Apple and Adobe's websites. But I am however confused about the difference between "Multicore Intel processor" vs "Core 2 Duo", and keep hearing stories about CS5 not working properly.
