  • Is it possible to install OSX on another computer via Target disk mode?

    Hey there...
a friend of mine has an older iBook. the drive on this iBook is broken (snapped off) so there's no way of using it.
is it possible to install OS Panther from another computer (use OS X panther install running on a MacBook, or G4) targeting the iBook via Target Disk mode?
    thanks!

    Hello Again SCHPiLKAS!
As roam posted, you cannot use the Intel MacBook install discs, on the PPC iBook.
    Additional info in these links.

Software Update, Upgrade: What's The Difference?
If the iBook meets the Panther System Requirements, and the Additional Panther System Requirements, and you have a Full Retail Version, of the Panther Install CDs, you can use Firewire Target Disk Mode, to install the system.
The Panther discs should look, exactly like the images in the above links, and not say Upgrade, CPU Drop-in DVD, or "This software is part of a hardware bundle purchase - not to be sold seperately." on them.

  • HT5022 I download it and its not possible to install, OSX 10.8.2 is not supported

I download the 5.6 utility and it is not possible to install

To install AirPort Utility 5.6, if you have already downloaded AirPort Utility 5.6, open Terminal and type:
    cd ~/Downloads && pkgutil --expand ./AirPortUtility56.pkg ~/Downloads/AirPortUtility56 && gunzip -c < ./AirPortUtility56/AirPortUtility56Lion.pkg/Payload | sudo tar -C / -xvf - "./Applications/Utilities/AirPort Utility 5.6.app"
Then, go to Utilities folder and open "AirPort Utility 5.6"

  • Why its not possible to install osx on pc ?

    hii
i just have a dream to have an OS X On my windows pc
i love apple with all its products but in egypt its so expensive so its soo hard buy apple device iMac MacAir MacPro ,
so i hope to hear that is osx can be availble for pc its my dream

    One word.
    "Architecture"
While they both use Intel processors, that's where the similarities end. OS X requires additional "signing" in hardware that Windows PCs don't have and they cannot (legally) imitate or copy. Windows will run on a Mac because everything it needs is there, plus the Apple proprietary changes, which don't prevent Windows from running.
Barney-15E is right. If you want or need to have both systems, you NEED TO do it on a Mac. Apple isn't going to release a "PC version" of OS X in this lifetime. It would be bad for business.

  • Cannot run install program on new Dell inspiron

Using Explorer, the default browser on my new computer, I went to the Mozilla.org site and clicked the link to download Firefox. A prompt appears at the bottom asking if I want to run the program, and I click "yes." The green status bar appears, gets to 61%, disappears, and another box appears asking if I want to allow Mozilla Corporation to make changes to my computer. I click "yes," the box closes, and nothing happens. I went through the install process by saving the file to my downloads instead of running it immediately; got the same result. I cannot get past this point to the Mozilla setup wizard to install the browser. Any help with this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Download and save the full off-line installation package from here. <br />
    http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all.html
Then close IE and start the installation.

  • Install OSX 3.2 in G5 ?

I recently purchased a new G5 Dual 2.3GHz with OSX 4.4 installed. My question: Is it possible to install OSX 3.2 (a retail version purchased at CompUSA) on this machine? I have tried, but the CD wouldn't fully boot. Would some kind and knowledgable soul enlighten me, please? I would really appreciate any guidance.
    G5 Dual 2.3GHz   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

Thank you so much, Stanley Horwitz and The hatter, for your prompt and very valuable replies and the informative link. Now I can rest assured in the knowledge that my new G5 (built 8G32a) is strictly a Tiger machine and be content to keep OSX 3.9 on my G4 QuickSilver.
I like Panther and am new to Tiger (two weeks). When I install QXP 6.5 in Tiger, the Activity Monitor no longer functions, but works fine with QXP 6.5 installed under OSX 3.9 on the G4. I will update to OSX 4.7, which may solve the conflict with Quark.
QXP 7.01 running in Tiger exhibits no conflict with Activity Monitor. This may be the ultimate solution.
    Thanks again.
BTW: My G5 runs beautifully, fast and COOL!

  • Installing OSX, Important Question!!!

My HD has gone ga-ga and am waiting to get Disk Warrior to try and fix.
In the mean time would it be possible to install OSX on my 2nd internal drive (currently used for audio and projects) without wiping what is already on it? Am thinking this might be a quick fix to carry on working until I can afford DW.
Could I use Disk Utility to partition the 2nd drive and install OSX on the new partition, as I cannot boot on my main HD?
    Many thanks.

Partitioning via Disk Utility is a destructive behavior, as it completely wipes the contents of the hard drive. Several non-destructive third party utilities exist, but some can also have technical issues leaving behind an empty hard drive. My suggestion first is to attempt to recover any information you haven't backed up with Subrosasoft's FileSalvage or Prosoft Data Rescue for your drive that you can't access, as well as backup your data on the accessible hard drive before attempting any repair.
You can install without wiping contents on a data only hard drive, but there is always a risk data might be wiped too. See my FAQ* about backing up:
    http://www.macmaps.com/backup.html
As for installing on a disk with no operating system, Mac OS X offers an option called "Install Mac OS X" or "Install Mac OS X for first time." For installing on hard drives with older operating system, you can use "Archive and Install". Note my upgrade FAQ* for other limitations you may run into:

  • Install osx on external hdd (usb)

is it possible to install osx on an external usb disk?
And if so how do i do it?
    Thx!

There are some utilities which claim to partition or re-partition on the fly.
DriveGenius seems to be the "Swiss Army Knife" of utilities, including the ability to repartition "on the fly" (A little scary for my tastes). But Prosoft is a trusted software manufacturer. There is also iPartition. and a couple of other utilities.
Myself would be a bit uncomfortable with this.
As for the size of the OS X partition, I would give it at least 10GB, if you can. The system itself will occupy 3-4GB and OS X needs room for VM to operate properly.

  • Install osx without a monitor.

Is it possible to install osx on a (tower) machine without the use of a monitor AT ALL.
Is there a way of avoiding all the graphical nonsense that comes with the traditional installation (particularly for a simple install that makes a machine into a server only machine.)
For example, how would an institution upgrade or install 1000s of computers...one by one seems absurd.
The machine has a DVD drive, firewire, network--but no monitor.
There are other laptops available that may assist in the rebuild/reinstall.
    Thanks

Firewire mode does allow for installing the OS.
You boot the mac to the firewire mode, connect it to your laptop, pop the installer CD in the laptop, reboot the laptop, and once in the installer, chose the firewire disk.
    What is your current situation?
Also, if you do have 1000s of machines you can send your image to Apple and they'll pre-deploy it for you while they're manufacturing your order.
Upgrades can be done easily with ARD. You can run your own software update server (you'll need OS X Server for this) and point the client machines to it. That can be done remotely with ARD, or can be set in the image.

  • I have a mac pro 1,1. I would like to know if its possible for me to upgrade the parts to where i can install osx mountain lion, or osx mavericks?

I have a mac pro 1,1. I would like to know if its possible for me to upgrade the parts to where i can install osx mountain lion, or osx mavericks? I am currently adding more ram so it will have 32gb of ram, i have 2 250gb HDD but adding a 250gb SSD , and have a ATI Radeon HD 4870 512mb that i will most likely upgrade to an ATi Radeon HD 5570 1gb.

The SSD will boot fast, but the real change is launching 10 programs in 10 seconds and being able to use them. (20 seconds for a few big suites).
I would not add or upgrade to 32GB RAM. You can get 8 x 2GB for $100 on Amazon.
Those 250GB HDD are "old" and slow and overdue to be replaced, reformat and use t o backup the system.
Samsung 250GB SSD is down to $150 or so on Amazon also.
The 5770 is gone, hard to find, EOL and over charged for when you do find one.
you could look into how to use a PC 6870 or others.
Or, you could hold out and wait for a refresh of Mac-Mini which can be just as fast or faster and run Mavericks.

  • Is it possible to install any OSX on an ibook graphite?

I have a graphite ibook and have had trouble with system 9.2.2 crashing.I want to know if I can install OSX 10.2? Can someone help?

I assume this one has Firewire?
If it has a firewire port, the highest you can upgrade to is the current version of 10.4.
If it has no firewire port, the highest you can upgrade to is 10.3.9.
The newer the OS version, the better it will run. You need at least 256mb of RAM, however (I'd personally reccomend 512, but that would be hypocritical, as my lime ibook only has 320).

  • Trying to install OSX.4 sys stalls when booting from dvd

I've read many of the discussions on this topic. Some are close but none are exactly like the problem I am encountering. I have a Power Mac G4 that was running OS9.2 and I've been trying to install OSX.4. I've tried every possible combination of starting from the dvd but it dones the same thing at the same point everytime. It restarts from the disk, I get the gray screen with the apple logo and the spinning wheel. It will run like this for about a minute or two and then freeze. I can't force quit and I have to restart. I thought it needed a firmware update so I checked the links (I had seen on some of the posts) but it looks like it's a machine that doesn't need one. But I'm not 100% sure how to tell.
I then went back and started with OSX and OSX.2 and they installed fine. I thought it would have to be installed progressively. But I still have the same issue. I am doing an erase and install with each upgrade. The software is a full retail version for each upgrade as well. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi Michel,
Be aware that you can only use an external firewire disk as boot volume since USB is not a bootable interface with MacOS X on PPC-based computers.
The message you receive is o.k. Insert the Install DVD and reboot while holding down the c-key. This will boot you directly from the CD to the installer application. Once you selected the language, select disk utility from the MENU, select your External drive and format it as "Apple Extended (Journaled)".
Quit disk utility and proceed with the installation. Make sure you select the external drive as destination!
When you have to reboot you will boot to the internal disk again. That's o.k. Open disk utility and repair the external disk and also permissions on the external. Next download and install the Mac OS X Update 10.3.9 (Combo). (you are still booted from the internal hard disk, so you will not be prompted for a restart).
Now restart and hold down the Option-key during boot. In the boot-manager you can select the external disk as boot volume. If your computer booted o.k. you made it! Just remember to Repair permissions before and after an update!
