Is it possible to install Panther directly onto ibook w/ OS9

Is it possible to install Panther directly onto a clamshell ibook with OS9, or do I have to install the various versions of X prior?
PM

Hi Paul,
if your iBook meets the 10.4 System Requirements (e.g. Built-In Firewire, 256 MB RAM,...) then you can directly install 10.4 without going through all the previous versions. However, be aware that you cannot use the install disk that came with your MacBook Pro!!! These are hardware specific and also specific to the Intel-CPU.

  • Installing Panther on G4 iBook which came with Tiger

Anyone help? I want to install Panther on G4 iBook which came with Tiger installed. I've used my iMac Panther disks to install, but although the iBook goes all through the installation process, it won't start up from Panther.

    Lyssa
Thanks for your reply. I suspected this might be the case but still hope there might be a way round it.
I want Panther on the iBook first because I prefer it to Tiger. Tiger has some annoying little features - for example, the fact that if you select a whole load of files and Get Info on them you get a separate window for each file - if you want to hide the extensions you have to tick the box in each separate window. In Panther you get a single window applying to all the files - neat! There are various other silly little things like this.
Second, the versions of Mail in Panther and Tiger are incompatible. If I save an email on the iBook (while away from home, for example) and want to transfer it to one of the mailboxes on my (Panther) iMac, I have to go through the following laborious process:
    1. Save the email on the iBook in Raw Message format. Copy it to the iMac (via a mobile hard drive).
    2. Create a temporary mailbox folder in Mail on the iMac. Close Mail.
    3. Go to Users ... Library/Mail/Mailboxes. Change the extension of the temporary folder from mbox to txt.
    4. Open it (it now opens as an ordinary folder).
    5. Copy the text of the email into the document called mbox.
    6. Close the folder, change its extension back to mbox.
    7. Open Mail again, move the email from the temporary folder into the folder where it belongs.
    8. Delete the temporary folder.
    Ridiculous or what?

  • Problems installing Panther on G3 ibook

I recently bought panther off ebay to install on my 3 year old ibook G3 [700mhz, 640 RAM, 30g HD]. I am currently running 10.2.8 without problems.
During the installation process I got the message 'An error has occured during installation' 'Please try to reinstall' I've tried to install, in various ways, 5-7 times at this point with no luck.
I've tried upgrading, I've tried erasing the HD and installing, I've tried only installing/upgrading the necessary componets to run the system, all of which have ended in the same error message. The error occurs during the 'Preparing Base System Part 2' part of the installation process [somewhere around 4 minutes remaining].
I thought it was the discs I purchased, but I was able to install Panther on my external and boot the computer from there, so it seems the discs are good.
In my latest attempt I erased my HD and reinstalled 10.2 from my original disks, upgraded to the most current versions of everything through Software Update and tried the upgrade ... still getting the same error ...
Any suggestions of what might help?

    Hi Again SloMocean!
Unfortunately, those CDs will not work on your iBook.
They are CDs that were designated to be shipped with a specific iBook model.
Although you have an iBook, it may not be exactly the same as the model that those CDs were intended for.
More info here Tip: Mac OS X Install CDs/Use On Multiple Macs.
You need a Full Retail Version of the Panther Install CDs, which can be purchased rather inexpensively, at some online Apple retailers, Amazon, eBay, etc.
They are no longer available directly from the "Apple Store", as "Tiger 10.4.x" is the most up to date OS.
You may find one on this eBay Search Results Page, but CAVEAT EMPTOR, as you have discovered!
If you do an expanded search on eBay, or Amazon, you will probably find more.
Once again, make sure the CDs that you purchase, look like THESE.
Once 10.3.x is installed, you can use the 10.3.9 Combo Update.
Shop Carefully, Read All Documentation, and Good Luck!

  • Having difficulty installing any OS onto iBook.

This blueberry iBook I got quite a while ago came with a broken OS 9 install (it would freeze just after the wallpaper came up). I'm trying to install a new OS. I'm well aware that Tiger doesn't work on it, so I'm trying to install Panther. Since I only have a DVD copy and the optical drive is a CD-ROM, I am forced to use an external DVD drive. While booting from external DVD, I get a prohibitory sign. Booting in verbose shows the well-known "Still waiting for root device". Verbose mode in depth shows:

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
Panther came on DVD only for select Mac models. The retail Panther came on CDs. If you are using any other copy of Panther than the one shown here*:
    * you have the wrong copy of Panther for your machine.
Also your machine's hard drive needs to boot successfully into Mac OS 9 to apply a firmware update before installing 10.2 or later. See this article for the necessary firmware:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=86117
Boot into open firmware to discover the Boot ROM version of your machine, by holding command-optin-o-f at startup, and telling us what Boot ROM version you have.
Your Mac should have come with installer CDs that shipped with it new. If it didn't you may have difficulty getting it to install Mac OS 9. Contact the seller for the original discs.
Two versions of iBook came with Firewire that have colors. The iBook SE Firewire (the February 2000), and the iBook Firewire (the September 2000).
These are the Macs that will boot off Mac OS X on a Firewire external CD or DVD drive. USB is not Mac OS X bootable. According to this article, these Macs some of them can run off the 9.0 retail installer, while others can run only off the 9.1 retail installer if you are missing the bundled iBook 9 disc that came with the Mac. To tell if yours requires the 9.1 retail installer, these release dates are of import:
October 1999 is when 9.0 was released, Macs newer than that require the 9.0.4 retail installer.
April 2000 is when 9.0.4 was released, Macs newer than that require the 9.1 retail installer.
To tell the difference between release dates of the Mac, see this article from Wikipedia:

  • Is it possible to install Panther on Ibook G3 Graphite?

I installed 10.2 on the ibook. That worked and is working fine. I then tried to install 10.3 without updating to 10.2.8. The installation seemed to go well, but it would not complete the start up. It went from gray to blue screen but the finder would not load and show on the desktop. The screen was not frozen.
Will 10.3 work with the G3 Ibook with 320 ram and 366 mhz?
Will updating to 10.2.8 first and then installing 10.3 possibly work?

    Hello Again Charley!
Does your iBook meet the Panther System Requirements
    Additional Panther System Requirements,
and Mac Model Compatibility & Requirements For OS X?
Are you using the Panther Retail Version CDs?
You haven't posted the size of your HD, and how much space is available?
Is the RAM original or added? Panther is very discerning about type of RAM.
If you have added RAM, remove it if the original amount is at least 128 MB.
Try the install again. If the installation is successful, you can then try to re-add the extra RAM.
Did you run Repair Permissions after the installation?
Also, see if anything here You see an empty, blue screen, helps.
    Good Luck!

  • Installing Panther on my ibook

i have an old ibook g3 and it is running 10..2, which does not support airport extreme WPA passwords. so our network runs on just that, so i need 10.3 to b able to get on the network.
i have resource install discs that came with my fathers laptop, which is an ibook g4. some people have said that the discs are made only for one specific system, but wen i used to have a clamshell, i was able to get os x 10.2 on it easily with my friends discs.
so im really confused and have no idea what to do or if im gonna need to get real OS disks.

    Welcome To Discussions Grimm 665!
    Here is some additional information.
Once a purchased version of OS X has been installed, the point upgrades, such as 10.1.x to 10.1.5 (Final) 10.2.x to 10.2.8 (Final), 10.3.x to 10.3.9 (Final), and 10.4.x to 10.4.9 (Pending), can be downloaded for free.
Tiger is available for purchase at The Apple Store (U.S.).
Panther, is no longer available directly from the Apple Online Store, as Tiger 10.4.x is the most up to date OS.
If you know what to look for, a Full Retail Version, of the Panther Install CDs, or a Full Retail Version, of the Tiger Install DVD, can also be purchased rather inexpensively, at some online Apple retailers, Amazon, eBay, AppleRescue, FastMac, etc.
As Gulliver posted, be sure not to purchase grey, upgrade or machine specific CDs or DVDs.
Panther is only on CDs, not DVDs.
Unless purchased from AppleRescue, the discs should look exactly like the images in the above links, and not say Upgrade on them.

Once Panther 10.3.x is installed, you can use the 10.3.9 Combo Update, to upgrade to the final version.
If your Mac meets the System Requirements for Tiger, you could also consider installing that, and then use the PPC 10.4.9 Combo Update, to upgrade to the current version.

  • Installing Panther On A Recent Computer

I know this is an odd question but I am wondering if it is possible to install Panther on a partition separate from my Leopard partition or even into Fusion on the same partition? My computer is an early 2008 MBP.
I have one piece of graphics software that does not work on 10.4, 5, or 6. I want to use it from time to time and I have the discs with 10.3 from my eMac which died a couple of years ago. I also have the install disc for 10.2 and for 10.1 (from an old iBook) any of which would be compatible with this software.
The software is the old Kai Power Tools plug ins for Photoshop and Painter.
If the earlier OS X is a problem can anyone suggest modern software equivalents of KPT ink dropper etc
    Tony

    Tony:
Are the PATA HDD easy to get?
Not at all. The iBook G3 has a limitation with regards to the size (capacity) of the HDD because the BootROM will only see 128 GB, but that is a lot more than 10 GB or whatever the original was. Here are a few I think would do fine for you:
    Seagate Momentus 5400.3 ST9120822A 120GB Hard Drive
    Fujitsu MHV2120AT 100GB Hard Drive
There are others, of course, but I couldn't get the long links to work. I recommend 100 or 120 GB. If you choose to go for something smaller here are a couple:
Seagate Momentus 5400.2 80GB Hard drive
    Hitachi HTS541060G9AT00 60GB Hard Drive
Look over these and post back with questions.
You will find step by step directions at iFixit. Here are few tips you may find helpful:
    • Print out the ifixit directions as well as the screw guide ahead of time.
    • Be sure you have the right tools. You don't want to damage the screw heads or you may never get them out. And the Torx screw driver is critical. For a spudge I use the handle of an old toothbrush (choose one made of hard plastic), cut off the brush and bevelled the handle end like a flat blade screw driver). For some spudge jobs a credit card will do the trick.
    • Picking up on one user’s suggestion, I clicked on the pages of each step which involved removing screws to enlarge, then printed out the pages. I poked holes in the paper where the screws were removed, poked the screws in the holes and stacked the pages in order in which there were removed. Reassembling was a lot easier. No cups to tip over and spill. No guessing. Each screw was exactly in the right place. You can use an ice cube tray, egg carton, dixie cups etc. I previously used small medicine cups one for the screws in each step. I nested them so that the last ones out and the first to go back in are on top. (Some users report cutting up the screw guide and placing the applicable section in each container.)
    • Be very careful pulling out leads. Hold the lead as close to the plug as possible and wiggle (the plug ) to loosen its grip. Don’t hold the wires and pull as that can damage the cable, or worse, in some instances pull the wires out of the plug. Indeed, some users have pulled the socket off the logic board! Use needle nose pliers or tweezers if you can access the plug, or nudge the plug with a small instrument to help loosen its grip.
    • Use force gently in removing parts. Separating upper and lower case takes some doing. Use a plastic tool (spudge) so as not to leave marks.
    • Refer to the screw guide when reassembling computer. Putting longer screws in the wrong place can perforate the circuit board.

  • Can i install EHP5 directly.

    Hi Guys,
I've been in a confusion. I've to install ECC 6.0 EHP5 directly. Is it possible to install it directly. Not IDES version. Some tells we can install directly. But some tells we have install ECC 6.0 first and then have to upgrade to EHP5. Can anyone clear me in this??
I tried running the installation master downloaded from service market place from the below path,
software downloads --> installations and upgrades --> Browse our download catalog > SAP Application Components>  SAP ERP> SAP ERP ENHANCE PACKAGE> EHP5 FOR SAP ERP 6.0--> Installation --> based on --> based on SAP NetWeaver 7.3.
But to my surprise i can't find any media files related to abap stack. When i run the SAPINST in the inst master downloaded from there there was option only for Java stack. no option for Abap stack or Abap + Java stack. I need to install Abap + Java stack.
Please anyone clear me in this. If we can install please tell me the correct path for the media files.
    Thanks and Regards,
    Santhosh Kumar.

    Hi,
    >  For example, with technical usage u201CHuman Capital Managementu201D you can update your software component SAP_HR 600 and >EA-HR 600 to SAP_HR 605 and EA-HR 605. This can only be done through Maintaince Optimizer in Solution Manager it >downloads all required files and creates the stack configuration file (u201Cstack XMLu201D) that can be read by the installation tools to >create a valid import queue.
    >
Just to correct you, SAP_HR version for EHP5 is 604 only but EA-HR is 605.
You can install directly to EHP5, on initial installation patch level of SAP_APPL and EA-APPL will be 605 SP00. Then you need to apply its patches from SAINT. In case you need to upgrade any additional usage type then you can do this with SAINT after downloading patches and stack xml file from MOPZ.
From Business Suite 7 systems, you cannot install dual stack system any more. You need to install both ABAP and Java as separate system with different SID's.
Please download DVD for ERP 6.0 EHP5 not the one for NW 7.3 equivalent. These DVD's are to install NW HUB 7.3 system.
    Thanks
    Sunny

  • I was going to install Rosetta Stone Spanish onto my Macbook but am concerned about it taking up space on my 2GB hard-drive.  I have an external WD hard-drive; is it possible to put the application onto the external hard-drive to save space on my mac?

I was going to install Rosetta Stone Spanish onto my Macbook 10.6.7 but am concerned about it taking up space on my 2GB hard-drive.  I have an external WD hard-drive, and I was wondering if it is possible to put the application onto the external hard-drive to save space on my Mac?

I think you're confused about how much hard drive space you have.  You probably have 2 GB of RAM...  there hasn't been a Mac shipped with only a 2 GB hard drive in a while.  At the bottom of any Finder window, how much space is available?
If you're actually running low on space, you should move documents to the external drive, since many applications want to be on the system drive.

  • How can I possible lose my entire photo library/ referenced master image file if I have downloaded all my images directly onto Aperture?

How can I possible lose my entire photo library/ referenced master image file if I have downloaded all my images directly onto Aperture?

CeliaJane, you need to distinguish between the Aperture Library and the Aperture Application.
Aperture stores your images in a database, and it is this database that we have to find and probably to repair, not the application (hopefully). And since you do not see any images, I suspect that Aperture created a new, empty Aperture Library, and you are now viewing this empty library. Usully the library sits in your Pictures fiolder.
Look into your Pictures folder, if you see a file with a colorful icon with three pictures, called something.aplibrary, as shown above. And also enter ".applibrary" into the "Spotlight" searchfield in the upper right corner of your screen. If you have more than one Library, you should be able to find them this way.
The largest file you find will probably be the correct library.
When you have found the correct file called aperturexxxx.aplibrary, try to open it in "First Aid" mode.
Select the Library and press down "command" and "option" key at the same time, while you double click the library.
Now the First Aid dialogue should appear:
Select: Repair Permissions" and see if you can open the Library again. If it did not help, try the other two options in turn.

  • Is it possible to install Solaris 10 without burning it onto CDs?

    December 16, 2006
    Hai!
Have downloaded Solaris 10 OS, x86, for downloading onto WINDOWS ONLY Platform - Solaris 10 11/06 Operating System. They are Solaris 10 11/06 x86 CD 1 to CD5.
I don't have a CD writer or DVD writer to burn the software onto CDs and then install it. Kindly let me know if it is possible to install the software without burning it onto CDs.
    Best Regards,
    Kartheek D. N.

Without a jumpstart server you would need to burn the DVD or at least the first CD, then you'ld boot of the first CD and install the initial OS. Once the OS have rebooted after the first install, you can install the software available on the remaining four cd's by mounting them with "lofiadm", "mount" and running the installer on the CD-images.
If you have another Sun system, you can create a jumpstart from the ISO files in a similar way, there is an infodoc which describes how to create an image from the first CD.

  • Possible to Install Logic 9 Content onto Another Drive?

I am using a small 60GB SSD drive, but I also have a larger drive inside the Mac. is it possible to install the additional content onto another drive? Otherwise I won't be able to use Logic 9 at all. Lame. :-(
    Thanks in adva

I have the install DVD's but it only allows me to install the apple sound effects to the other drive. Believe it or not, I have now attempted to download it from the app store because it's smaller. I've seen some posts on YouTube about moving the files and I might try their techniques but I'm at a loss as to what to do.

  • Can I install Mt Lion directly onto USB thumb drive?

I want to tryout Mt Lion without a lot of reinstalling of Snow Leopard issues. Can I just install Mt Lion onto a USB thumb drive or external HD via Firewire 800 to demo Mt. Lion and if I don't like it then I won't have to reinstall SL.

Yes, if the Thumb drive is big enough. I installed it on an External Drive myself... & went back to 10.5/10.6 for getting work done.
Also, the Installer "conveniently" erases itself after install, so to save a huge download if needed again... make a copy of it before you install.

  • Wanting to install Panther via iBook G4

Hi everyone. Thank you for taking the time to view my post.
    I have an iMac G3 500mhz 320mb 20gb CD-ROM computer running OS X 10.1.5.
I also have an iBook G4 running 10.3.9 with system disks supporting 10.3.3.
I would like to install Panther onto my iMac, but it has no DVD drive. I have tried for hours trying to do a network install via my LAN, but it appears that 10.1.5 didn't include network startup as a feature. (i don't see it anyways)
I know this is possible by way of FireWire, but I don't have a FireWire cable and I don't know which one to get or where to get it. Apple stores are few and far between in the middle of America and I don't have any opportunities to visit one any time soon.
My big question is if it is possible by way of iPod?
    I have a 4th gen 20gb iPod (monochromatic)
Is there a way I could use the iPod as a startup disk that would allow me to install Panther on the iMac?
    Thank you for any help.

Check e Bay or a computer store supply if your in a hurry. The price on a 6 pin to 6 pin firewire cable has dropped big time in the last year or so. If you decide to purchase an external enclosure which has both USB and firewire outputs on it you would be supplied with a cable as well. It's not a bad idea to have an external case for easy backup at a cheap price and it would work with either your lap top or iMac and you could use it to transfer data or files from one computer to another.

  • Is it possible to install previous TRIAL versions of previous versions of Adobe Creative Cloud Software?

Look, I'm just testing the trial versions right now.  Don't try to troubleshoot something that I don't ask; this is what I'm looking to accomplish:
Is it possible to install a trial version of any of the Adobe Creative Cloud software in a previous version?  By that, I am referring to the following:
I want to install a trial version of Adobe Premiere Pro CC 2014; NOT Adobe Premiere Pro CC 2014.1.  If you notice, I want to reinstall a trial version of the previous release.  Don't ask why, you'll just laugh for my stupid reason, but I'm merely wondering if it is possible.  Creative Cloud now only offers trials of the newest versions, and I want to install trails of previous versions for my own, personal reasons.  Is this possible to do with creative cloud, or must I do it some other way?
Is it also possible to obtain the physical installation files so that I won't have to always go through creative cloud to download them again (and then I can just set it up without being connected to the internet)?
