Is it possible to install Panther on Ibook G3 Graphite?

I installed 10.2 on the ibook. That worked and is working fine. I then tried to install 10.3 without updating to 10.2.8. The installation seemed to go well, but it would not complete the start up. It went from gray to blue screen but the finder would not load and show on the desktop. The screen was not frozen.
Will 10.3 work with the G3 Ibook with 320 ram and 366 mhz?
Will updating to 10.2.8 first and then installing 10.3 possibly work?

Hello Again Charley!
Does your iBook meet the Panther System Requirements
Additional Panther System Requirements,
and Mac Model Compatibility & Requirements For OS X?
Are you using the Panther Retail Version CDs?
You haven't posted the size of your HD, and how much space is available?
Is the RAM original or added? Panther is very discerning about type of RAM.
If you have added RAM, remove it if the original amount is at least 128 MB.
Try the install again. If the installation is successful, you can then try to re-add the extra RAM.
Did you run Repair Permissions after the installation?
Also, see if anything here You see an empty, blue screen, helps.
Good Luck!

  • Is it possible to install Panther directly onto ibook w/ OS9

Is it possible to install Panther directly onto a clamshell ibook with OS9, or do I have to install the various versions of X prior?
    PM

    Hi Paul,
if your iBook meets the 10.4 System Requirements (e.g. Built-In Firewire, 256 MB RAM,...) then you can directly install 10.4 without going through all the previous versions. However, be aware that you cannot use the install disk that came with your MacBook Pro!!! These are hardware specific and also specific to the Intel-CPU.

  • Wanting to install Panther via iBook G4

Hi everyone. Thank you for taking the time to view my post.
    I have an iMac G3 500mhz 320mb 20gb CD-ROM computer running OS X 10.1.5.
I also have an iBook G4 running 10.3.9 with system disks supporting 10.3.3.
I would like to install Panther onto my iMac, but it has no DVD drive. I have tried for hours trying to do a network install via my LAN, but it appears that 10.1.5 didn't include network startup as a feature. (i don't see it anyways)
I know this is possible by way of FireWire, but I don't have a FireWire cable and I don't know which one to get or where to get it. Apple stores are few and far between in the middle of America and I don't have any opportunities to visit one any time soon.
My big question is if it is possible by way of iPod?
    I have a 4th gen 20gb iPod (monochromatic)
Is there a way I could use the iPod as a startup disk that would allow me to install Panther on the iMac?
    Thank you for any help.

Check e Bay or a computer store supply if your in a hurry. The price on a 6 pin to 6 pin firewire cable has dropped big time in the last year or so. If you decide to purchase an external enclosure which has both USB and firewire outputs on it you would be supplied with a cable as well. It's not a bad idea to have an external case for easy backup at a cheap price and it would work with either your lap top or iMac and you could use it to transfer data or files from one computer to another.

  • Installing Panther on iBook 500mhz

    Hi,
    Just a quick one...
I was just about to order some extra RAM (512mb)for this ibook G3 500mhz (only has 64mb at the moment) I got so I can run Panther, however, I thought before ordering it, I'd check if the Panther install CDs would work.. I was just curious..
So i popped it in the CD drive, clicked on Install OSX and the ibook restarted.. but it didn't start the Panther installation.. instead it booted normally into 10.0.3 (I even held down 'c' whilst restarting).
I kinda expected this as it does say 'at least 128mb of memory' on the PDF... am I right in thinking it won't even try to install Panther if theres only 64mb of RAM?
I didn't wanna shell out for the extra RAM and find out Panther wouldn't install anyway.. hehe.. method to my madness
    Any tips/opinions would be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    ian

Were you started up from the Panther CD when this happened? In other words, did you start up from the CD instead of the hard drive prior to clicking on "Install"?
Panther has been successfully installed on an iBook 500 MHz. You need more RAM for it to happen. The main drawback is hard drive space. If you have the little dinky 10 GB hard drive, you could run into problems.
My husband has Panther installed on his, but he doesn't even have AppleWorks installed. He doesn't use iTunes or iPhoto. If you want to do anything besides internet surfing and e-mail, you may have problems.
It is generally recommended to keep 5 GB free in order to run OS X smoothly.
That's hard to do on an iBook with a (nominal) 10 GB hard drive that is, in actuality, only 9.31 GB.

  • Installing Panther On A Recent Computer

I know this is an odd question but I am wondering if it is possible to install Panther on a partition separate from my Leopard partition or even into Fusion on the same partition? My computer is an early 2008 MBP.
I have one piece of graphics software that does not work on 10.4, 5, or 6. I want to use it from time to time and I have the discs with 10.3 from my eMac which died a couple of years ago. I also have the install disc for 10.2 and for 10.1 (from an old iBook) any of which would be compatible with this software.
The software is the old Kai Power Tools plug ins for Photoshop and Painter.
If the earlier OS X is a problem can anyone suggest modern software equivalents of KPT ink dropper etc
    Tony

    Tony:
Are the PATA HDD easy to get?
Not at all. The iBook G3 has a limitation with regards to the size (capacity) of the HDD because the BootROM will only see 128 GB, but that is a lot more than 10 GB or whatever the original was. Here are a few I think would do fine for you:
    Seagate Momentus 5400.3 ST9120822A 120GB Hard Drive
    Fujitsu MHV2120AT 100GB Hard Drive
There are others, of course, but I couldn't get the long links to work. I recommend 100 or 120 GB. If you choose to go for something smaller here are a couple:
Seagate Momentus 5400.2 80GB Hard drive
    Hitachi HTS541060G9AT00 60GB Hard Drive
Look over these and post back with questions.
You will find step by step directions at iFixit. Here are few tips you may find helpful:
    • Print out the ifixit directions as well as the screw guide ahead of time.
    • Be sure you have the right tools. You don't want to damage the screw heads or you may never get them out. And the Torx screw driver is critical. For a spudge I use the handle of an old toothbrush (choose one made of hard plastic), cut off the brush and bevelled the handle end like a flat blade screw driver). For some spudge jobs a credit card will do the trick.
    • Picking up on one user’s suggestion, I clicked on the pages of each step which involved removing screws to enlarge, then printed out the pages. I poked holes in the paper where the screws were removed, poked the screws in the holes and stacked the pages in order in which there were removed. Reassembling was a lot easier. No cups to tip over and spill. No guessing. Each screw was exactly in the right place. You can use an ice cube tray, egg carton, dixie cups etc. I previously used small medicine cups one for the screws in each step. I nested them so that the last ones out and the first to go back in are on top. (Some users report cutting up the screw guide and placing the applicable section in each container.)
    • Be very careful pulling out leads. Hold the lead as close to the plug as possible and wiggle (the plug ) to loosen its grip. Don’t hold the wires and pull as that can damage the cable, or worse, in some instances pull the wires out of the plug. Indeed, some users have pulled the socket off the logic board! Use needle nose pliers or tweezers if you can access the plug, or nudge the plug with a small instrument to help loosen its grip.
    • Use force gently in removing parts. Separating upper and lower case takes some doing. Use a plastic tool (spudge) so as not to leave marks.
    • Refer to the screw guide when reassembling computer. Putting longer screws in the wrong place can perforate the circuit board.

  • Problems installing Panther on G3 ibook

I recently bought panther off ebay to install on my 3 year old ibook G3 [700mhz, 640 RAM, 30g HD]. I am currently running 10.2.8 without problems.
During the installation process I got the message 'An error has occured during installation' 'Please try to reinstall' I've tried to install, in various ways, 5-7 times at this point with no luck.
I've tried upgrading, I've tried erasing the HD and installing, I've tried only installing/upgrading the necessary componets to run the system, all of which have ended in the same error message. The error occurs during the 'Preparing Base System Part 2' part of the installation process [somewhere around 4 minutes remaining].
I thought it was the discs I purchased, but I was able to install Panther on my external and boot the computer from there, so it seems the discs are good.
In my latest attempt I erased my HD and reinstalled 10.2 from my original disks, upgraded to the most current versions of everything through Software Update and tried the upgrade ... still getting the same error ...
Any suggestions of what might help?

    Hi Again SloMocean!
Unfortunately, those CDs will not work on your iBook.
They are CDs that were designated to be shipped with a specific iBook model.
Although you have an iBook, it may not be exactly the same as the model that those CDs were intended for.
More info here Tip: Mac OS X Install CDs/Use On Multiple Macs.
You need a Full Retail Version of the Panther Install CDs, which can be purchased rather inexpensively, at some online Apple retailers, Amazon, eBay, etc.
They are no longer available directly from the "Apple Store", as "Tiger 10.4.x" is the most up to date OS.
You may find one on this eBay Search Results Page, but CAVEAT EMPTOR, as you have discovered!
If you do an expanded search on eBay, or Amazon, you will probably find more.
Once again, make sure the CDs that you purchase, look like THESE.
Once 10.3.x is installed, you can use the 10.3.9 Combo Update.
Shop Carefully, Read All Documentation, and Good Luck!

  • Installing Panther on G4 iBook which came with Tiger

Anyone help? I want to install Panther on G4 iBook which came with Tiger installed. I've used my iMac Panther disks to install, but although the iBook goes all through the installation process, it won't start up from Panther.

    Lyssa
Thanks for your reply. I suspected this might be the case but still hope there might be a way round it.
I want Panther on the iBook first because I prefer it to Tiger. Tiger has some annoying little features - for example, the fact that if you select a whole load of files and Get Info on them you get a separate window for each file - if you want to hide the extensions you have to tick the box in each separate window. In Panther you get a single window applying to all the files - neat! There are various other silly little things like this.
Second, the versions of Mail in Panther and Tiger are incompatible. If I save an email on the iBook (while away from home, for example) and want to transfer it to one of the mailboxes on my (Panther) iMac, I have to go through the following laborious process:
    1. Save the email on the iBook in Raw Message format. Copy it to the iMac (via a mobile hard drive).
    2. Create a temporary mailbox folder in Mail on the iMac. Close Mail.
    3. Go to Users ... Library/Mail/Mailboxes. Change the extension of the temporary folder from mbox to txt.
    4. Open it (it now opens as an ordinary folder).
    5. Copy the text of the email into the document called mbox.
    6. Close the folder, change its extension back to mbox.
    7. Open Mail again, move the email from the temporary folder into the folder where it belongs.
    8. Delete the temporary folder.
    Ridiculous or what?

  • Is it possible to install OSX on another computer via Target disk mode?

    Hey there...
a friend of mine has an older iBook. the drive on this iBook is broken (snapped off) so there's no way of using it.
is it possible to install OS Panther from another computer (use OS X panther install running on a MacBook, or G4) targeting the iBook via Target Disk mode?
    thanks!

    Hello Again SCHPiLKAS!
As roam posted, you cannot use the Intel MacBook install discs, on the PPC iBook.
    Additional info in these links.
Using OS X Install CDs/DVDs On Multiple Macs

Software Update, Upgrade: What's The Difference?
If the iBook meets the Panther System Requirements, and the Additional Panther System Requirements, and you have a Full Retail Version, of the Panther Install CDs, you can use Firewire Target Disk Mode, to install the system.
The Panther discs should look, exactly like the images in the above links, and not say Upgrade, CPU Drop-in DVD, or "This software is part of a hardware bundle purchase - not to be sold seperately." on them.

  • Is it possible to install OS X on an old iMac G3 (350MHZ)?

    Hi,
I have an old iMac G3 (350 MHz) running with OS 9.0. Since a long moment, I have problems on the net because I can't upgrade Netscape or Explorer anymore. So, it seems that I would run an OS X to be able to install Safari or something like that an surf well. My questions are:
    - Is it possible to install OS X on my old computer?
    - If yes, what do I have to do and how much can it cost?
    - If not, is there any solution to keep my old machine and make it usefull on the net?
I don't khnow a lot about computers and I don't realy want to spend a lot of money to buy a new computer for now...
    Thanks a lot,
    Chouchouchat
    PS
I can read English better than I write it, but I am more comfortable with French for technical instructions...

Just to reinforce what Denison said. Your firmware must be 4.1.9 if it's not you must upgrade the firmware from within OS 9 before you bring any OS X (10.2 and above) installer near your machine:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=86117
I moved away from OS 9 to Panther for exactly the reasons you have. I did it about 3 years ago and I was using iCab at the time.
Around here, Chicago, someone sold a Panther installer for $20 last week on Craig's. Make sure it's a Black one with silver lettering.
I have all my kids on iMacs 2 400s and 1 600. They're all running 10.3.2 upgraded to 10.3.9. They play all those kids games Nick and Club Penguin. The older one has the faster machine and uses GarageBand, lays his own tracks and watches YouTube all the time. I also dropped a DVD player in it so he can watch DVDs.
BTW you can drop a 400 board in your 350 (FireWire) and even up to a 500 easily. A 600 or 700 will require mods to the heat sinks. I've done that on 4 machines.

  • Install Leopard on iBook

Is it possible to install from the Leopard DVDs that came with my Unibody MB on my PPC iBook G4?
I have the tiger DVDs from the iBook, but would like to upgrade to Leopard without having to buy the retail DVDs.
I don't want to start the erase and install with the Leopard DVDs and have it tell me it's not possible.
    Thanks in advance!

The discs that come with any Mac are machine-specific and contain hardware drivers for that machine. I believe there's a possibility they would work on another machine with the same hardware, but that's about it.

  • Install CD's and/or re-installing 'Panther' without them?

    Hi,
I can't find my Install CD's and my iBook doesn't start up anymore. I get the 'loading-screen', but after that the screen just stays blue. Now I've tried everything they advise you to do in Support, nothing works though. So of course the next step would be to use my Install CD's, which I can't find anymore. I've recently purchased a SmartDisk and I've been able to save the files I don't want to loose through Target Disk Mode and a friend's iBook. He said I could borrow his Install CD's, but he's got a 14" and I think it's 'younger' than mine. This would mean it wouldn't work, right? Besides, it might even be illegal, or not? What I was wondering is whether I can still use Disk Utility via those CD's or will that fail as well?
And if so, can I make a CD with my iBook that enables me to install Panther without my original Install CD's? And if so (these are a lot of 'ifs', I know), how can I save, for instance, the iLife that was on those original CD's, can I just copy the application to my external hard drive and then put them back afterwards?
I've given Apple a call to ask how much it would cost to buy a new Install CD and it was €95 (about $115)! So if anyone can help, I'd be very much obliged!
    Thanks!
    Kevin
    iBook 12 inch   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

If your friend's iBook is a "Late 2005" and yours is an "Early 2004", then his iBook would have come with Mac OS X 10.4. This copy of 10.4 will not install on any other kind of computer. However, you could buy a retail copy of Mac OS X 10.4. This would not get you the AppleWorks or iLife that originally came with your iBook, however. You could also buy a retail copy of iLife, but with the two purchases together, it would be cheaper to pay Apple for copies of your correct disks...
Although I'm not sure how I can find the processor speed without my iBook working.
If you open the keyboard, there will be a sticker inside that has some information about your iBook. It should say something like "1.2GHz G4/512/40/AP/BT". That would be a 1.2GHz G4 with 512MB of RAM (built-in), a 40GB hard drive, an AirPort card, and Bluetooth.

  • Stuck: can't re-install Panther, only 10.0.3

OK, I've posted this also on iMac CRT.
    Here's a short story:
Panther ran beautifully fore quite a while, then started to have kernel panics due to faulty RAM.
I just replaced the 2 128 Mb sticks that were faulty with a brand new 512 from Crucial.
But still could'nt start-up in Panther. Got freezes during installation always on the first CD. Also got panics (cpu 0) or "can't find PowerMac drive".
Ran DiskWarrior and there was a whole bunch of stuff wrong and repaired.
    Still same symptoms.
Everything was backed-up and I zeroe'd the HD
Then re-installed OS 9.1, updated with OS 9.2.1 with CD. All was well, then I could'nt install Panther. Same symptoms.
I got fed-up, changed the HD, brand new Western Digital 80 GB.
Started over again and same results: OS9 OK, no-go on Panther...
I can install OS 10.0.3 that came with the beast but can't upgrade to 10.1 with the CD that also came with the iMAc. Say's that the installer unexpectadely quit (error 0)...
Panther disks are retail, could they be faulty ???
    Any ideas anyone
    Thanks

Well, it is mind bogling cause:
    1) OS 9.2.1 is installed and bootable
    2) OS X ver 0.3 is installed and bootable
    Both OS run fine.
I tried again this morning by booting with the Panther CD's:
    - still no possibility to repair OS 9
    - still offers only an Archive and Install, that failed.
I went to look in the Receipts file but there's only packages concerning OS 10.0, nothing on 10.3
I couldn't start in Single User to fiddle around with it maybe I could try stuff in Terminal
I had to leave for work,(yes even on Easter...) so I started the Apple Hardware Test in loop mode and I'll see around midnite if something shows up.
There's nothing important on the HD so I could erase everything and start over but I don't feel it will work since I've just did that.
    I think it's something else,
    - Bad CD (it's 10.3.0
    - Bad RAM (even though it's brand new, I'll have to check it with Memtest if I can run it)
    - Bad wiring somewhere inside
    - Bad luck...
If there's any other ideas, there welcome of course...
    Happy Easter all

  • Installing Panther without a password

    Hi!
I'd like to install Panther again, but I'd like to do it so that I no longer have a 'major password' let's say... Whenever I install something, I have to enter a password, so I was wondering if it's possible to install it without that password somehow. I mean, when I create my account, it just adds my existing password again.
    Thanx,
    polar
P.S. I thought i just might click the 'Erase & Install' option during installation... Or?

    polar:
You can do an erase and install, and set up your computer any way you want, although it is not advisable to set up without a password. Mac OS X security is linked to a password. Being able to install software without a password is a convenience of dubious advantage because then anyone can install on your computer including those who want to install malware, adware, spyware or viruses while you are online.
    Good luck.

  • Install Panther on second hard drive (Leopard on first)?

My G4 desktop has two internal hard drives. I work on the first and use the second only for storage. I recently installed Leopard on the first drive, and all went well. After that installation, I decided to install Panther (10.3.9) on the second drive, using the original install disks. Could't do it; my machine wouldn't boot up from the installation disk.
On the advice of phone tech support, I took these steps:
disconnected everything from the G4, including keyboard, monitor, power cord
reset power management (held down power key for 15 seconds)
reconnected only power cord, keyboard, and monitor
    reset PRAM on start up
put Panther install disk in CD drive
    restarted, holding down "c" key
Same result: the Apple logo appears on a pale gray screen but nothing else happens.
What should I try next? I'm assuming it's possible for me to use the original Panther installation disk as the start-up disk and to install Panther on my second internal hard drive, while Leopard is on the first. But maybe that's not a correct assumption?
    Will appreciate help.

Still can't get my G4 to recognize the original install Panther disks when I insert them into my CD drive and restart holding down the "C" key. I want to install Panther on my second internal hard drive; Leopard is installed on the main internal drive.
    I have tried the following:
    1) Reset Power Management (with everything unplugged)
    2) Plugged power, keyboard, and monitor back in
    3) Reset PRAM
    4) Restarted and held down "C" key. Still could not get CD to recognize the CD. (Screen was pale gray with darker gray Apple logo; stopped there.)
    5) Reset Power Management again (everything unplugged)
    6) Plugged power, keyboard, monitor back in
    7) Reset PRAM
    8) Restarted and held down Option key. Chose "CD" when given that option. Still could not get CD to recognize the CD. (Screen was pale gray with darker gray Apple logo; stopped there.)
Any other actions I should try? One forum respondent suggested I take out the Leopard-based hard drive and install Panther on the remaining drive. Would rather not do that if I don't have to.
    Help will be appreciated!

  • Re-installing Panther, keeping my settings

Hi, i need to re-install to panther because i bought it from a friend and want to change the short name and stuff like that...but how would i re-install panther and keep all my settings and files and programs on the laptop now?? Is that possible at all? thanks

If all you want to do is to change account names, you could just add a new account with the names the way you want them. Use System Preferences > Accounts. Then, click on the lock to make it open. You will need to have an administrator password for that. Then, click on the plus sign in order to add a new account. Here is where you can choose the names that you want. Since this will be your account, you should also make it an admin account.
If you really want to re-install, there is something called an Archive and Install which does most of what you want. If you select the correct option, it will keep your settings. However, some of your third party apps might not be kept. The Archive and Install does make a Previous System folder on your desktop and you can probably drag out additional items that you need.
