Is it possible to install solaris on unformated disk?

Hi!
Is it possible to install solaris8 on scsi unformated disk, the new purchased one? It's gonna be the only one disk in workstation, becouse the old one faild.Any ideas?
Thank you.

This is a normal problem with new disks. Since I use jumpstart I have since adjusted and the server autoformats the disks for me. Since you are on a singe platform my suggestion is that you do a boot cdrom and then when the installer gets to a stopping point (at the beginning) just open a new ternimal window and then type format. All that needs to be done is labeling the drive, nothing else. Afterword you can close the window and proceed with the installation. You MUST not proceed with the install until the drive is labeled. So the second that the desktop comes up open the 2nd terminal window by right clicking the mouse and chosing host > terminal.

  • Is it possible to install Solaris 10 without burning it onto CDs?

    December 16, 2006
    Hai!
Have downloaded Solaris 10 OS, x86, for downloading onto WINDOWS ONLY Platform - Solaris 10 11/06 Operating System. They are Solaris 10 11/06 x86 CD 1 to CD5.
I don't have a CD writer or DVD writer to burn the software onto CDs and then install it. Kindly let me know if it is possible to install the software without burning it onto CDs.
    Best Regards,
    Kartheek D. N.

Without a jumpstart server you would need to burn the DVD or at least the first CD, then you'ld boot of the first CD and install the initial OS. Once the OS have rebooted after the first install, you can install the software available on the remaining four cd's by mounting them with "lofiadm", "mount" and running the installer on the CD-images.
If you have another Sun system, you can create a jumpstart from the ISO files in a similar way, there is an infodoc which describes how to create an image from the first CD.

  • Is it possible to install Solaris 10 from Hard-Disk

Linux support installation from HD, will it be possible in solaris?

I am having similar problems. It reads the x86.miniroot files, displays a copyright notice and hangs.
If Solaris cannot run in a Virtual Server, it pretty much useless to me :-(

  • Error when installing Solaris 10_x86 Language Disk

I downloaded the Solaris 10_x86 (Desktop) Language Disk form the SUN download site, but when I attempted to install, the system responded with "The disk you inserted is not the correct CVD/DVD for Solaris 10". I have downloade three different sets and got the same error message.
    Any Ideas???

Indeed, it happened to me as well, using the CD I downloaded from here
    http://www.sun.com/software/solaris/freeware/s10download.xml
But anyway, I was just able to run the installer by hand after logging in when the system rebooted.

    Hello,
first of all: Try to run the HCTS (Hardware
Compatibility Test Suite) first, it's available
    here:
    http://www.sun.com/bigadmin/hcl/hcts/device_detect.htm
    l
This you can run from Windows, and it will list all
hardware that has drivers, and all those, that do not
have drivers (including some public domain drivers).
After that, you have the possibility to install
Solaris WITHOUT a GUI, use one of the two "terminal"
modes. The first Is still a GUI, as it only starts X
and opens a terminal, in which then the installer
runs. The second does NOT start X, but runs the
installer on the console. Try this one, and once you
get through that, you can afterwards figure out the
    settings of the Xserver.Hi ,
i have installed the solaris using console.
Still GUI is not starting, the moniter is switched off when GUI gets started
I used Hardware Compatibility Test Suite, its say that system is supported
    by Solaris.
Should i have change BIOS setting to stated the system

  • Install Solaris on External Firewire Disk

    Hello All,
I have a laptop running windows 2000 and I have a External Firewire Hard Disk of 60 GB. Now my question is, " Is it possible to install Solaris 8 on this external Firewire Hard Disk". When I tried installing, It did not find the external Firewire Disk, the only partition information, which solaris was displaying was from my internal Hard Disk.
Please give me clues/information, how should , I do it.
    Thanks
    Sanjay

First off, is any of your Macs an Intel Mac, that will complicate matters since they use a different hard drive formatting and need a different installation of Mac OS X.
Secondly, you can't directly install Mac OS X from an Intel Mac to an external hard drive, you have to do a clone with a software like Shirt-Pocket's Superduper for that.
If it isn't an Intel Mac, perhaps your Firewire hard drive isn't Mac OS X bootable? Not all are.
Here's a hint on making the Intel/PowerPC partition table:
    http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=2006061610374449
Also note, different Macs which came out after Tiger will only boot off the install disk which came with them, and not the retail disk. So you are best off cloning that Mac to its own partition.

  • Installing Solaris 8 on a SunFire 280R

The SunFire 280R has 11 external disks. Disk 11 has Solaris 9 installed.
In attempting to install Solaris on another disk, the following message appears at the command "boot cdrom" command:
krtld: load_exec: fail to expand cpu/$CPU
krtld: error during initial load/link phase
panic-boot: exit to 64 returned from client program.
    Program terminated.
Do you have any ideas on how to solve this?
Is Solaris 8 (1/01) unable to installed on a 64-bit machine?
Objective: I'm trying ot have both Solaris 8 and Solaris 9 on the same processor.
    Thanks for your insights.

    Hello,
I just wanted to point you to the Sun System Handbook page for the F280R, but to my surprise the note is lacking from the current <b>public/free</b> version !!!
This is a quote from the <b>Quick Facts</b> of a formerly public SSH
    <table border="0" align="center" width="90%" cellpadding="3" cellspacing="1"><tr><td class="SmallText"><b>Quote:</b></td></tr><tr><td class="quote">
Solaris 8 1/01requires specific patch installations. See 816-1712 for details.
Solaris 8 10/01 is the minimum OS for 900MHz Cu modules.
    </td></tr></table>
<b>READ ME: Important Patch Installation Required Sun Blade 1000 Sun Enterprise 280R</b> is available from docs.sun.com.
The Blade 1000 and the Sun Fire 280R use the same systemboard, but a Enterprise 280R doesn't exist.
Either get Solaris 8 7/01 or Solaris 8 10/01 (for 900Mhz Cu) or a more current version of Solaris 8.
If you have a service contract, you can notify Sun (ssh-feedback&#64;sun.com) about this omission. It's your time and money you have spent when you got stuck ...

Installation Guides should be clear enough, if read. Also read Release Notes for additional support/unsupport info.

  • Possible to install JDS on Solaris 9?

    Hello,
Is there any possible way to install Java Desktop System on Solaris 9? I am only asking this because I don't like the GNOME environment, or the CDE. I can't install Solaris 10 on this machine either. So, any way this is possible?

    Hi Sadiq,
I can't find the libintl.so.8 in / . I redo the installation use the following sequences, still got the same error:
I downloaded an unzip the files to /tmp/mm
    then
    from /tmp/mm
    I run
    1) pkgadd -d libiconv-1.13.1-sol9-sparc-local
    2) pkgadd -d gcc-3.4.6-sol9-sparc-local
    3) pkgadd -d make-3.82-sol9-sparc-local
The installation is successful from the output of pkgadd.
and I can find the gcc, make under /usr/local/bin.
I use the helloworld to test the GCC , it is OK. but make still got the same error.
I echo $PATH and can find the /usr/local/bin in the PATH ( This is the way to check library path ?) I am a newbie.

  • Is it possible to install 2 OID on single solaris machine

    Hi,
Could you please let me know if it is possible to install 2 OID on 1 solaris machine.
    The scenario is:
I have Sun Solaris SPARC(64 bit) machine. We have 2 users created(oracle and oracle 1).
I m able to install 1 OID with oracle as a user and which uses the default ports.
There is a problem when we try to install 2nd OID with oracle1 as a user.
    Thanks in advance

You could install both as oracle user. Create different set of environment variables. Install them to two different locations, and change the default ports used. Then just make sure you are using the correct $ORACLE_HOME/opmn/bin directory to start the instances.

  • Is it possible to install two GUI version on same server??

    Hi all,
I am facing a typical problem.
I am using ECC 6.0 on Solaris server and accessing through CITRIX where SAP GUI 6.4 is installed.
I have got Internet Explorer 7.
Some dumps are cumming like message_server_x
Then I went for SAP GUI 7.1 in which error is not cumming.
There is only one CITRIX server at this moment and users from all the location is using through this on live system. They are not getting such issue.
But we the new project team is getting this issue of dump.
Now the question is whether it is possible to install SAP GUI 7.1 seperately on the same CITRIX server where SAP GUI 6.4 is running???
    Thanks in Advance

I do not have knowledge in the field of CITRIX metaframe, i'm only can advise you read about the

I installed Solaris 8 2/04 in a Sun Fire V120 (UltraSPARC-IIe 648MHz), the installation finished but when server restarted it displayed this:

i tried with boot -b but it did not solve the problem, when i tried to start the server normally it could not, I can oly enter to server in maintenance mode, and the sysem could not found a lot of files (like /usr/sbin) and commands (like ls, boot, init).
I found at the start of the installation this display

i do not know if is a hard drive problem. Please help me because i tried three times the installation but the problem still exists

Since this is a fresh installation, you might consider starting it all over again.
You may have made some initial selections while prompted at the beginning of the install process, that accidentally omitted essential system files.
As for that device path and the disk? It's pointing to an external non-Sun peripheral that's connected to the rear external SCSI port. That drive has some bad sectors. ( I wouldn't trust a new OS on those sectors until you fixed them.)
The errors are not calling out either of the two possible internal drives.
Infodoc 21216 lists a few default system device paths, and ...Sun Fire [TM]v120 / Netra[TM] 120

  • Can I install solaris on a second hard drive?

I am completely new to Solaris. My computer runs Windows XP as its primary OS and I have a second (slave) hard drive that I would like to install Solaris 10 on. Does the installation DVD for x64 architecture automatically handle this kind of installation? Is this process possible? If it is, will I have to manually configure the BIOS to boot each OS every time I change my current OS, or will some sort of GUI dialogue come up? I would like information on this subject and if possible, step-by-step instructions.

Tottaly agree with the last post. Check if your hardware is in HCL, there is a free program you can download from Sun Download page, you burn it to CD and reboot, then it will provide you with all needed information. And if something is not in the list, you will get a hard time seting it up (there are a lot of unofficial drivers). So as an example: networkcard will be hard to install and set up. So check first.
As from my experiense conserning instalation, I would suggest to do so:
(in a way as the last post)
prepare a clean partition, or backup files on a HD. run the instalation, once you will reach the point when it will ask you how to install (Normal or Custom) choose custom, then it will go to several questions concerning where on a HD to install, thats where you can choose partitions and so on.
Just as a reminder: you dont need alot of space for Solaris to work properly, plus there not so much software which requires big amount of HD. So for OS and nice package for development you will probably need tops 10Gb.
