Is it possible to Install Windows 8 Pro 64-bit on a secondary hard dive in Mac Mini (Late 2012) using Boot Camp 5?

Hello,
I have a Mac Mini (Late 2012) running on OS X 10.8.3 and would like to install Windows 8 Pro on a secondary hard drive using Boot Camp 5. Is that really possible?
A little background about the topic under discussion.
1. Mac Mini (Late 2012) has a place holder to accomodate an additional hard drive (2.5") under the hood
2. If just plugged with one, it would show as an additional volume in the finder
3. Boot Camp 5 supoprts Windows 8 Pro 64-bit installation
The idea is to run two operating systems (1. OS X and 2. Windows 8) on two hard drives in a Mac Mini, with maintainability a constraint.
Have any one tried this out?  If so, kindly share if there are any specific procedures apart form the one given in Boot Camp 5 manual.
Thanks in advance.

Gotcha!!
I am done with mounting a secondary HDD (thanks to ifixit) and installing Windows 8 Pro 64 bit on it without a worry. Charm, charm!!
Boot Camp 5 guide prescribes all needed steps and when read and used correctly, installation must be an easy task. And all the existing apple hardwares work so good in the Windows environment too.
I am going to help out a friend of mine in doing a similar thing on his mac too. If you got specific questions, please do shoot up here and i should be able to get a reply to it (if at all).
Thanks everyone.

  • Mac mini (late 2012) Windows 8 Pro: no HDMI audio & driver error

    Bootcamp 5.0.1
Mac mini (late 2012) server, installed boot camp on the second HD and gave entire HD to bootcamp partition.
Installed Windows 8 Pro from USB key created during installation from iso file, activated with Microsoft. Everything went smoothly, have one issue that I want to share, to see if anyone has been able to resolve. By the way, magic track pad, as expected only have basic functions supported, left and right click, scroll with two fingers, "tap to click" and secondary click with two fingers tap.
Only one issue so far but pretty major one. Audio through HDMI cable doesn't work, all sound plays via Mac-mini's internal speakers. Windows Device Manager shows error for "High Definition Audio Device" - The device cannot start. (Code 10).

Well, arguably bootcamp 5.0.1 does support Widows 7 or higher, there no reference anywhere that it doesn't.
I was able to fix issue by updating driver using intel audio driver. Everything works now...

  • AirDrop transfer between Mac mini (late 2012) and MacBook Pro (late 2008) works only one way.

AirDrop transfer between Mac mini (late 2012) and MacBook Pro (late 2008) works only one way.  I see both machines on both airdrop windows. Firewalls on both machines are set exactly the same way, and with Network Browser set to allow.  Can send a file from Mac mini to MacBook, but not the other way.  Never get a window asking to accept on the Mac mini.
Found no useful documentation on AirDrop anywhere in the whole support site.

Maybe this will work. From an Apple support article.
You can also use the Share button to send files to your neighbors via AirDrop. In a Finder window, select the item you want to share, and then click the Share button in the toolbar. For more information about the Share button, see this help topic:

  • Windows 8.1 on Mac Mini late 2012

    Hello,
I'm trying to put Windows 8.1 on my Mac Mini late 2012 (as my Windows laptop is dying) but I'm not getting anywhere.
    What I've done so far:
Use BCA to use Win8.1 ISO and make the bootable USB, it reboots, "No available drivers"
Use BCA to make the bootable USB and then extract the contents of BC5 (from http://http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1720), then use BCA again to partition the disk and reboot... again, "No available drivers"
How do I get Windows 8.1 on my Mac?
    Kind regards

  • Can I install and use any 2.5" SATA hard disk on my Mac Mini (Late 2012)?

I have a Mac Mini (Late 2012) which is currently housing a 500GB SATA hard disk. Unfortunately read errors have been detected and it seems to be slowing down. I want to replace this with another 500GB SATA hard disk and I was wondering whether any notebook (2.5") hard disk would work or whether I have to look for one with specific specs (such as RPM, SATA version, etc).
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Any 2 1/2 inch STA HD will work as long as the height is 9.5 mm or less. All most all meet this requirement except very larger capacity ones
I would opt for a SSD since those are a lot faster than a 2 1/2 HD and now they are very reasonably priced.
You can consider installing a second disk to using:

  • Is it possible to install Windows 7 32 bit on Maverics?

Hi. I was trying to install my original copy of Windows 7 32 bit on my IMac 21’5 (Late-2012).
It did not work because unfortunately Boot Camp 5 supports only 64 bit versions of Windows.
I know, that Boot Camp 4 supports 32 bit versions, but is it possible on Maverics? Can I install Boot Camp 4 and then install Windows 7 32 bit?
My Mac’s specs:    Processor  2,9 GHz Intel Core i5 Quad-Core
                                  Memory  8 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
Graphics  NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M 512 MB

    bootcamp is 3 different things
    1. the bootcamp setup program which let one partition the space the windows install will use and let you auto download the driver zip
    2. a boot loader this just point at which partition to launch it's pretty simple
    3. the driver zip itself one can get the bootcamp program to download and put it on a stick or the user can download it themselves
your attempt to solve the issues get you around 1. which is blocking you
but 3 don't contain the 32bit drivers so you are facing not having drivers for the hardware which pretty much is like running windows in safemode
or taking your chances with the drivers from the maker of the various bits and pieces in the mac like qualcomm and cirrus and....
imxp thats a nightmare with macs much more then a computer that came with windows
are you sure that your windows 7 is not both 64 and 32 on the same disc and you just happened to install 32bit last time ? mine were with both

  • Can I install Windows on my iMac 27, 3TB Fusion Drive, late-2012 with Boot Camp 5?

Hello. When I first opened the Boot Camp Assistant app, it said it could not work with the 3TB fusion drive. With the updated version of Boot Camp, the option to install Windows appeared. I tried to install Windows 8, but the loading bar stopped moving. I waited for hours, but it still did not move. I decided to quit the app, and re-open it, in order to try again. It crashed, and would not open. So I restarted my system and when I did that I noticed that I had about 1GB or so left of storage. This shocked me, because the disk was just suddenly filled for some reason. In hopes of fixing this I used an app called 'CleanMyMac' to try and recover the disk space. And as I thought the disk space returned to normal. However when I went to Disk Utility and clicked 'repair disk' it said this...
There is only 1 partition, so the Boot Camp process did fail.
I don't know whats wrong with my system though? I would like to install Windows, but I'm worried that I might recieve errors again. I have not got Apple Care, but I'm playing on buying it soon, due to it being almost a year since I bought the system.
Maybe I did something wrong when trying to install Windows with Boot Camp? I don't know, but if possible can someone please tell me if I can install Windows and if something is wrong with my system.
Here is some additional screen shots of the type of system I have.
Thank you for your help with this issue!

Which copy or version of Windows? and how where was it purchased?
my window installed itself perfectly on another computer.
One copy and you want to activate on two computers?
With 16GB, it will try to create 16GB hibernation file, 24GB page file, and need 20-30GB for the OS, plus room for temp, cache, applications, 9GB just temp to install SP1 update(s).
did you create 80GB or larger partition?
also, some macs with ssd + hard drive have issues, and of course you need Windows 7 64-bit home premium (Pro to use more).
OWC has up to 32GB, not cheap.

  • I want to get Windows 8 for my MacBook Pro (late 2011) using Boot Camp, but I have lost my installation disk for my windows. What should I do?

    Please hep me.

I am fine byuying a copy of WIndows 8 but where would I buy it? Also I was wondering wether I would be able to do this without using a disk, solely online, because my boot camp says insert disk.

  • Had anybody tried to boot camp Windows 10 on Mac mini (late 2012)?

I know the support site clearly did not list windows 10. I wonder if any front runner or hobbyist had ever tried it. I am new to mac and need to use the mac to practice X code. I don't have the experience to experiment this boot camp (on windows 10) and also am in fear of messing up my mac mini if I do so.

You can also do like I did on my MBP 13 inch from mid 2012, when I removed the Super Drive and put in a SSD and kept the HDD it came with it wouldn't install  any Windows when I had two separate drives, the SSD and the HDD. So what I did was doing my own Fusion Drive with them, and after that it went smoothly to install Windows 8.1 using the Bootcamp app that is on your Mac. It is not recommended to use Disk utility to partition for Bootcamp, when having a Fusion Drive.

  • Mac Mini late 2012 BootCamp 5 Window 8.1 installation error "EFI Boot"

I've been trying to install Windows 8.1. I use bootcamp 5. Nothing went wrong in the processes. Until the computer reboot and came to partition seletion for booting windows intallation. it didn't let me go any further from this process. I got the message telling me that to install EFI system file, I need GPT partition table. Then, I checked my HDD on disk utility which confirms that my HDD is GPT. But somehow, in the process, it is reconised as MBR. I've tried it several times. I don't know how to fix this issue. - Is there anyone knows how to fix this?

Well, arguably bootcamp 5.0.1 does support Widows 7 or higher, there no reference anywhere that it doesn't.
I was able to fix issue by updating driver using intel audio driver. Everything works now...

  • Windows 8 + Mac Mini Late 2012 Issues

I have installed windows 8 succesfully on my mac mini but I cannot use windows update. Everytime it installs updates it says "Update failed" and reverts and reboots. I have not problems with Windows 8 on any other computers in the office except this mac mini. I have reinstalled windows 8 a few times though bootcamp, but it fails each time. Can anyone give me some tips?

  • What are the software issues with installing a 2nd SSD on my mac mini (Late 2012?)

    Hi Everyone,
I've just bought a brand new Mac Mini server - 2.6GHz, with a 256GB SSD.
I have also bought a 512GB SSD from Crucial, along with a Dual Drive Install Kit from OWC, and will probably be installing it myself.
I've read a lot of info on various forums/websites that is a little concerning.....regarding data loss when you reboot the Mac having installed the new SSD (not sure if this just applies to adding the SSD to a system that contains a 'normal' HDD.....)
If I'm going to have 2 SSDs in my system, I guess there are 2 questions:
    1. Can I just add the new 512GB SSD without any reboot issues
    2. Is it important to keep the system SSD physically where it is, i.e. at the bottom of the Mac (and plugged into the same connection on the logicboard?)
Thanks in advance for any help!

Thank you so much John and woodmeister50, most helpful
Just one more thing - the crucial drive came with a data transfer cable (SATA to USB) - I haven't got my dual drive install kit through the post yet...so do you foresee any problems with me installing the software that I will be using on the 512GB drive, in preparation for it being internally installed - is that possible to do with this cable?
    Thanks again people!

  • Mac Mini (late 2012), Windows 8, and Apple EarPods.

    Hello there.
Recently, I have been trying to get my Apple EarPods with Remote and Mic to work with my bootcamp installation of windows 8.
when I plug the earpods into the audio out jack while using OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.2) I can use them without trouble.
when I do the same thing in my Bootcamp installation of Windows 8, I can hear the audio just fine, but I can't use the remote portion of the Earpods, nor can I use the mic in the Earpods remote.
I would like to know if any drivers are necessary to use these earphones, or if they simple will not work with Windows 8 at all.
Many thanks in advance, and I hope to hear from you soon.

I don't think the mic and remote work with bootcamp.  You should submit feedback here: http://www.apple.com/feedback/macosx.html
