Is it possible to keep songs on your ipod but erase them from your . . .

I know it has to be possible, but I need some help to do this. I have a lot of songs and would like to get them off of my hard drive. Is it possible to erase them from my hard drive and keep them on my ipod? If so, what's the easiest way to do this?
Thanks

Possible, yes. But not typically advised around here, as the iPod's hard drive is not a reliable long term storage/archival device. Best to back up your songs onto either an external hard drive or CD/DVD media first before deleting from iTunes.
Setting the iPod to manually manage music and playlists, though, will achieve what you're looking to do.

How do I keep stuff on my ipod, but not on my computer?

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
You will need to enable manual updating...
    Transfer music manually
Now, when you delete songs from your computer, they will stay on your iPod.

  • How do I keep movies on my Iphone, but delete them from my computer as well?

I've got a computer with limited hard drive space left due to an exhaustive game library. As such, I can only 'afford' to fit maybe 8 gigs (2 or so) worth of media downloads on it. And suffice to say, downloading media with my computer is much preferable to sloooooowly doing it over the cloud.
The problem, however, is that I know that there's a crazy amount of autonomy in Itunes' decisions, namely that deleting a file from your computer will make Itunes decide that the Iphone doesn't get to keep it either.
Is there a setting somewhere I'm missing?

    Hi
If I keep them on itunes thet will sync over to the ipod when connected. We didnt want them on the opod because when on shuffle they will play which isnt what we want.any ideas appreciated.

  • Is it possible to leave movies on the Itouch and erase them from computer??

I have an Itouch and have been trying to find out how to leave movies on my Itouch after I download them, and then erase them from the hard drive of my computer. I thought it would be simple to do. I tryed downloading the movie then put it on the Itouch, then synced it, then erased it from the mac, but somehow I synced the Itouch and it asked me if I wanted to copy the information from my Itouch to the computer and I didn't. Now the movie is gone from my Itouch. Please explain??

I back up all my purchases to an ext HD. That way I can delete movies/TV shows from iTunes/iPod and still have them available for future days of boredom. You can always add them back to iTunes and watch them later or a 2nd, 3rd., etc. time.

  • Can I pull songs off my iPod and put them on my computer?

My husband's iPod classic needs a new battery. The problem is that he didn't back up his songs on the computer, so the only place they exist is on his iPod. As you know, when I send his iPod in for a new battery, his songs will all be gone.
So I was told recently that there is a way to pull songs off an iPod and put them into iTunes on a computer. Is this really possible? If so, does it involve new software or hardware? Can you give me specifics? Where is this software/hardware available? Our computer is a PC running Windows XP. I want to do this for him for his birthday. Any advice you can give me will be greatly appreciated!
    Thank you!

For iTunes version 7 or later, then you can transfer purchased iTunes store music from the iPod to an authorized computer by using the "file/transfer purchases from iPod" menu. Note that the maximum of 5 authorized computers applies here.
Find out how to do that here.
How to copy iTunes purchases from an iPod to a computer.
For all other non purchased content (your own CDs etc) try this method which works on some Windows PCs.
Enable your iPod for disk use.
    See: iPod Disk Use.
Open iTunes and select edit/preferences/advanced/general. Put a check mark in the box marked "copy files to iTunes music folder when adding to library" and also "keep iTunes music folder organized", then click 'ok'.
Connect the iPod whilst holding down the shift/ctrl keys to prevent any auto sync, and if you see the dialogue window asking if you want to sync to this itunes library, click 'no'.
Then go to file/add folder, open 'my computer', select your iPod and click 'ok'.
The music files should transfer to your iTunes.
If this doesn't work (and it may not because officially it's not supposed to), check out the instructions/suggestions here.
Music from iPod to computer (using option 2). This a manual method using "hidden folders" and although it works, it is a little more involved than other methods.
Much easier ways are to use one of the many 3rd party programs that copy music from the iPod to the computer.
One of the most recommended is Yamipod. This is a free program that transfers music from iPod back to the computer. However, it does not transfer playcounts/ratings etc.
Another free program is Pod Player.
    SharePod is also freeware.
If you want to recover just the structure of playlists from the iPod (and not the actual song files themselves), there's iRepo for Windows. which I understand has this feature along with all the standard features for these programs.
iPodRip also has the feature enabling you to reconstruct playlists.
There is also CopyTrans. This does preserve ratings/playcounts etc if those are important to you but this program is not free. It also supports video transfer.

When I hook my ipod up to my mac I used to get the Itunes has detected an ipod that appears to be corrupted error message. It would then sync all my song to the ipod but when I ejected it, none of the songs would be on the ipod. Now I hook it up and I get the Mac OS X can't repair the disk error message. Then the spinning colored pinwheel pops up and I can't use iTunes. Please HELP!!!!!!

Sounds like your iPod is broken. Take it to Apple or someone else who repairs iPods and see if you can get it fixed, or get it replaced.

  • Possible to get songs OFF your Ipod and onto an external HDD or your PC?

I have songs on my Ipod that are NOT on my PC (thru having to manually manage my library in the past over 2 'smallish' HDDs in my PC).
When I open my Ipod from within Windows I 'see' the songs in the Music folder as .mpeg4 but no song titles so I can't differentiate between them. For example, a song is listed as CVFK.mpeg4, another as DPKQ.mpeg4 etc ...
When I open the Music folder on my Ipod from within i-TUNES I can see the songs I want, I can "highlight" them, right-click and 'COPY' them, but for the life of me I can't seem to 'PASTE' them anywhere...like IN MY LIBRARY which is on my new external USB HDD.
Why be able to "COPY" if you can't do anything with them? It seems you must be able to, but how? I WANT to copy them off my Ipod and put them into that new exteranl HDD that has 75% of my i-tunes library...the other 25% being my Springsteen collection that at the mo is ONLY on my i-Pod.
I am using a 30gb video ipod with latest software (1.2.1), iTunes 7.1.1.5 (latest) and a fully-updated MS Vista Home Premium.
ANY assistance would be GREATLY appreciated.

The transfer of non iTunes Music Store content such as songs imported from CD is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there is a manual method of accessing the iPod's hard drive and copying songs back to iTunes on Windows. The procedure is a bit involved and was written long before iTunes 7 and Windows Vista so it requires a little adaptation as the iPod preferences are no longer in the location described for instance but if you're interested it's posted in this thread: MacMuse - iPod to iTunes
If you prefer something more automated that will let you transfer individual tracks then there are a number of third party utilities that will do what you want. You can use these to retrieve individual music files and playlists from your iPod, this is just a selection. You'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos, podcasts and games as well. Have a look at the web pages and documentation, check for Vista compatibility as they may not all have been updated yet. Some of these are free and some are commercial but generally they are not very expensive. You can also read reviews of some of them here: Wired News - Rescue Your Stranded Tunes

If you have any iTMS purchases the transfer of purchased content from the iPod to authorised computers was introduced with iTunes 7. A paragraph on it has been added to this article: Transfer iTunes Store purchases using iPod

  • Is it possible to delete songs in your ipod?

    Hello!
I have a friend. And he is asking me if, I could ask you if he can delete songs from my Ipod. He have some songs that he doesnt like and the computer He sync songs from isn't available at the moment. So the question is, can he delete songs and videos from his ipod 5gen without connecting to the computer.

    Patrick,
So how do you erase songs from the ipod using the computer? In the manual it says to select the song on the ipod then to press delete button or the backspace button on the computer's keyboard. This does not work for me!! Any advice?

  • Going from MAC to PC, How to keep songs on my iPOD?

I have recently switched from Mac to PC.
I have problem in keeping my songs on iPOD when connecting to my new PC?
How do I keep my music? and start sync with my new PC instead?

"I have recently switched from Mac to PC."
    Oh dear.
"I have problem in keeping my songs on iPOD when connecting to my new PC?"
Well a Mac formatted iPod cannot be read by a pc without the use of 3rd party software (such as XPlay2), and of course if you reformat the iPod for pc use, you'll lose the songs.
Do you still have access to the Mac, or are your songs on the iPod only?

  • Keep songs on ipod but erase in itunes with syncing

I was wondering if anyone know how to sync the whole itunes library to the ipod video but exclude certain songs/videos from syncing. I don't have enough space on my harddrive to keep all of the videos but I would still like to keep them on my ipod. I don't want to use the ipod as external harddrive and keep them there because i would still like to watch/listen to the songs/videos i don't keep in itunes.
      Windows XP

I understand that but I want to do the opposite. My ipod has enough space, my harddrive on the computer doesn't. I want to keep them on the ipod, but not in itunes. How do I keep all of my videos on the ipod (while still being able to play them), but not on my computer in itunes? I still want the rest of the library synced.
