Is it Possible to Mark Chapter while capturing from camera?

While capturing from camera there are incidents (like obvious mis-speaks, etc.)that I would like to mark during the shoot when they happen to facilitate finding them while editing.
Is this possible to enter a chapter marker or something during live capture?
Open to any other suggestions.
Thank you.
I am using FCP 7.0.3.

After about a year of manually noting the time code and notes, I finally found a solution to the problem of marking chapters during a live shoot.
Final Cut Pro X will not allow you to mark a file while capturing it, probably because it does not actually change the raw file.  However I just found a piece of software that will do the trick nicely.  It is called Cut Notes.  The only catch is that you must have an iPad to run it.
You can purchase it from digital rebellion for $9.99 at
http://www.digitalrebellion.com/cutnotes/
You start Cut Notes at the same time that you begin to capture, and it will start a timeline, identical to the one in FCP.  Then for every edit point, you simply tap a key to insert the timecode along with either a pre-determined note or manually entered note as to the event.  For example I have a note key that says MisSpeak, the opertator just taps it when I mis speak and it saves the time code and the MisSpeak title into a text file.   I have another note key same for "walked off screen." You can Edit any number of note keys you may need. Then when finished, Cut Notes will email the file to your computer, simply import it to FCP as chapters using a free utility available at the same website.  Awesome!!!
The only caveat is that you must import the file with markers before you do any editing to the project in FCP.
Hope this is helpful.

  • Encoding DV to ProRes 422 while capture from camera

Is It possible to capture a DV tape encoding with ProRess 444?

but if you're trying to integrate DV into a project that is already predominantly made up of ProRes footage, whether it's from DigiBeta or HDCAM, it would decrease render times.
Not by much. I'd opt for the minimal rendering over the file size that would happen with the change in data rate.
Don't we always preach to have all your footage in the same codec whenever possible?
    There are exceptions.

FCP 10.1 DV capturing from camera breaking the scenes into unwanted clips by flashing a black screen on import window. But its fine and accurate with adobe premiere pro cc ?
    Any solution * Advance Thanks

FCP X will import into separate clips every time it detects a scene change (as when you stopped and started recording in the camera). There is no option to avoid this, as far as I known.
You may try importing from camera using Quicktime Player X and then bringing the imported file into FCP X.

  • IMovie 08 minor problem, hovering on "Done" while capturing from a camera..

In iMovie 7.0.1, when I am capturing from a camcorder, when I hover over "Stop", it shows "Click here to begin recording" instead of "Click here to stop...". The same is with when I am capturing with the iSight camera, it shows "Click to begin recording". This is a minor problem, but might confuse some computer illiterate folk and should be fixed in the next update.

    Thanks, I'll pass that along.
If she's upgraded her OS or QT beyond this point, which she's probably done -- in all innocence -- then to get it to work, she'd have to re-install earlier versions of both OS X and QT? Or buy a new, considerably more expensive version of FCP?
    Wow! That's a bummer.

  • Capturing from camera...

I have a HITACHI digital camera connected to my mac via usb.. final cut express 3.0 does not let me capture from it ... why is that????

FCE supports firewire connectivity with mini-dv camcorders. So, the USB connection is one problem. What format is your camera? I thought all Hitachi's current camcorders were disc-based.

  • Premiere Pro: Capturing from Camera

I'm unable to capture digital video directly from any camcorder.
Adobe's documentation says I need a firewire connection(?!) for that. That can't be right.
Apple, at least in the iMac, has eschewed firewire connections in favor of thunderbolt.
Longtime software partner Adobe, issues state of the art software that only allows for obsolete hardware??
I'm sure this has been asked before. Can anyone clue me in?
    I'm considering attempting a workaround:
    HDMI-to-Thunderbolt adapter.
    Has anyone tried that?
    Any other workarounds?

I may have misunderstood your intentions initially, thought you wanted to record "live" from camera to computer, as one might do in a studio situation. This can be very beneficial when shooting green screen footage for instance. Most camcorders use a LOT of compression when saving to in-camera media, along with weak 4:2:0 color, and by recording the live HDMI output using the Intensity or MXO2 device, allows you to record to a much higher-quality codec with intra-frame recording at high bitrates using 4:2:2 color, for improved keying results.
As others said, copying SD card contents to computer hard drive is typically the best solution for most users these days. The HDMI capture devices I mentioned do not copy "data" as you mentioned, the way that Firewire or USB have worked in the past. Rather, you would PLAY the video in the camcorder, and the video coming out the HDMI port as "uncompressed video" is then captured to the format you specify. The video is being converted to something else, and is not simply a "data transfer".

  • Is it possible for me to screen capture from one desktop while working on another desktop?

I would like to use QuickTime screen capture feature on Mountain Lion to record a video from Desktop 1, while working separately on Desktop 2. However, QuickTime records this by following my movements to Desktop 2 and then recording what I am doing in Desktop 2. Is there any way around this (either using Quick Time or perhaps a different program/software)?
    Thanks

    No.
I have multiple Apple IDs. Is there a way for me to merge them into a single Apple ID?
Apple IDs cannot be merged. You should use your preferred Apple ID from now on, but you can still access your purchased items such as music, movies, or software using your other Apple IDs.
If you are wondering how using multiple Apple IDs relate to iCloud, see Apple IDs and iCloud.

  • Unable to initialize video deck, (can not capture from camera)

    Hello All,
I am using a quad core G5 and am trying to capture some footage into Final Cut Pro version 5.0. I have two Panasonic DVX 100B mini DV cameras. I normally capture with a JVC BR-DV3000 mini DV deck but it is currently not working. So I'm trying to capture using my camera.
I hooked my camera up to my computer via firewire and started final cut, When I click File > Log and capture a little window pops up that reads:
" Unable to initialize video deck. You may still log offline clips or use Capture Now"
I'm not sure why this box is appearing. When I click the capture now button, the Capture window pops up and then I press play on the video camera and the footage plays on the camera but the capture window remains black or empty. I have tried both cameras and two different firewire cables with the same results. I have also tried to restart the computer.
Can anyone shine some light on this situation?
Thank you so much for your help.
    Mike Wardynski

Are there any other firewire devices connected to your Mac?
Did you go into your easy setup and reselect the DV setting for the standard you are using?
Also sometimes, shutting down and restarting your Mac, after making these changes some times allows the new device to be recognized.
One other thing, the DV camera may have a menu setting that needs to be set for communication via firewire possibly?

  • File size limitation while importing from camera?

I just installed QuickTime 7 Pro and tried to import a movie from my video camera (mini DV).
It worked ok until it stopped with the pop up message like "file too large". That happened after 35 min of recording and 7.8 GB file size.
Is there really a limitation in file size?
    thanks for feedback

Th DV quality is not as good as mp4 would be but it is a nice alternative.
If miniDV camcorder is recording in standard DV, then the Vidi captured quality should be the same as your source file on the camcorder. If camcorder is recoding in HDV and down-converting to DV for Vidi capture, then display dimensions would be reduce drastically. (In this case, you should capture the content using iMovie which will convert the HDV content to AIC while retaining the original dimensions and converting the audio to QT compatible audio.) The main difference between MPEG-4 and Device Native capture by QT 7 Pro is that the camcorder's DV content is transcoded to the MPEG-4 OR MPEG-4/AVC (H.264) compression format making the file much smaller. DV is an "editing" compression format while MPEG-4 is a "delivery" compression format. You can edit the DV files in QT 7 Pro or any other Apple or third-party video editor and then convert them to any QT compatible compression format for which your system is configured.

  • How to capture from Camera to PPRO CC?

    Equipment used:
    1. GY-HM750U JVC
    2. 1394 Firewire port to thunderbold adapter into Macbook Pro
The record settings on my camera match my project settings in PPRO CC. However when I go to the capture Panel and hit record I see nothing in on the screen (what my camera sees I cannot see). Then after I hit ESC to stop recording or even stop it pops up with "unknown record error" message.
I have setup my device control, and have even attempted it as none.
All I am trying to do is get a backup live recording from my camera via firewire.
I've followed my JVC firewire setup and set things accordingly in PPRO CC to no avail. Any help would be great!

That would suck. The whole point of the adapter is to allow this to happen. Thanks for your input.

  • IDVD 08 freezes while importing from camera for OneStep DVD

I am importing video from a Sony camcorder (dv) as the first step in a onestep DVD process. I have tried two different tapes and it has frozen both times - once at 14 min. and the second at 19 min. It seems to be in the middle of a scene in both cases. The camera is still running, but iDVD is no longer importing and is reported as "No Response". Have to Force Quit.
    Any ideas?

I appreciate the disk space problem, as the first time I tried to capture, it ran out of space on my internal drive. That's when I moved the capture to the firewire drive.
So I checked the internal drive - 13.6GB available before capture. In addition, I monitored it throughout the capture process (using the application "What Size", which tells you how big all your files are) and found it stayed stable throughout the capture sequence.
Meanwhile, the firewire drive showed the captured file to be growing as it captured more video. I've tried to capture this particular tape twice, and I see that it froze with the captured file size at EXACTLY the same size: 4,294,934,528 bytes. This is about 19 min, 53 sec. of video.
I wonder if a) it only really works capturing to the internal drive, or b) if something got messed up when I ran out of space the first time. I think it did capture all or most of the tape when I ran it the first time on the internal drive.
I guess I could clear more space on the internal drive and give that a go again. Ideas?

  • Transitions do not render Audio / no audio while importing from cam / etc.

hi - i still have problems with the latest iMovie HD 6.0.2. (267) on my brandnew 17" iMac (Intel) 1-GB-RAM, (QT WITHOUT any 3rd-party-SW)
    1. the build-in transitions (soft/smooth, overlay) dont render the AUDIO-file.
it takes NO effect (only the images do)
    2. by importing clips from the camera i cannot hear AUDIO the same time
(by replaying the importet clip audio is available/imported)
    3. the sharpening filter can't show a preview - the effect/s will only appear AFTER rendering.
    any idea?
    Mike

As others have noted, the audiolevels are as they are when you record. If you need good audio on your video, you need to make sure the levels are ok while you record!
That is, not to low, and not clipping.
On most pro setups, the audio is controlled by a seperate person, or you have mics with microports on the speaking person(s) that are adjusted before the actual recording starts.
Too low audio tend to give a lot of noise, and to high audio make clippings when digitized, making distortions.

  • Help!!! how do you capture from cam then feed it directly to codec?

i'm doing a program that puts effect from the input of the captured video. i can't figure out how to insert a codec from input to output. i've already got everything going except that.
    help..

    Hi,
You can try a package named: JTwain, which is available at http://asprise.com/product/jtwain.
JTwain supports all kinds of digital cameras and scanners. You can use Java to access, contorl digital cameras and scanners, and of course, to acquire images with flexible settings.
The developers' guide is available @ http://asprise.com/product/jtwain/devGuide.php
In the simplest case, one line of Java code can solve your problem.
    Good luck!

  • Imovie slows down then freezes while importing from camera

I am trying to import a movie from my canon hv10. I've never had problem the last 2 movies I did. but this time around it starts importing, and a few clips later, slows down to 1/8th time. then freezes. The camera is still playing but it has stopped importing. I have tried to pause it to let it catch up. Restarting it numerous times. It is being imported into my 500 GB hard drive. I have 400 GB available. It's worked before in HD. Any ideas? anything would be helpful, I've searched every single message board so far. thanks.

I had a smilar problem. it came up when I changed OS to Leopard OS X 10.5.
My Imovie HD 5 had been working fine until then under earlier OS versions, both in LP as well as in normal mode. Then all of a sudden importing stopped eery few seconds.
I checked many discussions in this forum and tried a lot of suggested solutions, to no avail. I have now come to realise that Leopard is the problem, not the camera, the cable, or preferences or good old iMovie HD.
I simply went back to an older laptop (iBook) running OS 10.3.9 and iMovie 3 . No problem whatsoever importing clips (just had to start a new project about every 20 minutes of clip import). Then attached my external harddrive via firewire, copied the projects to the Hard Disk and then opened them with iMovie HD 5 and bingo: the project was OK and could be further worked on.
So that does not solve the basic problem, but is not too complicated as workaround.
