Is it possible to migrate just a few programmes over to my new iMac from G4

I have just bought a new iMac 17" and I love it.
I want to transfer only a few files over from my G4 iMac. Basically the songs from iTunes, photos from iPhoto and one game and maybe MS Office.
I'm planning on using the Migration assistant but I don't want to copy everything across as my G4 iMac is full of stuff I don't want.
Is it possible to transfer just a few bits over? Also, do I have to use a firewire cable or I use an ethernet cable?
I do not want to start migrating only to find out that it transfers across all the settings I don't want!
Thank!

Here's how I migrated files over from my G4 iMac to my new Intel one.
I connected the two iMacs with a firewire cable (for those with a G4 iMac, this is the cable which connects the iSight camera to the iMac).
Ensure that both iMacs are turned on.
Next, hold down the "T" button on the keyboard of the G4 and whilst keeping it held down, select 'restart' on the G4 iMac. The G4 iMac should then display the firewire symbol on the screen on top of a blue background.
You should then see an icon on the Intel iMac showing the harddrive of the G4. You simply click on this and drag over the files you want.
I initially had a problem dragging over the songs from iTunes as I didn't know where they were stored as I had multiple user accounts. They were all in the 'shared' folder.
To get to a user account, simply click on Go -> Home -> Users. If there are no multiple accounts, just do Go -> Home.
To get the songs across, then click on Music -> iTunes -> iTunes Music or simply drag across the iTunes Music folder.
Bingo! You now have the iTunes library on your new Intel Mac.
There is one final step, which I've actually forgotten how I did it, and that's getting the songs into iTunes itself. You need to open iTunes and then somehow import all the songs from one of the menus.

  • I just moved my profile over to a new laptop (from windows 7 to 8.1), everyone was working great for about 2 hours, now I can't send or receive.

I've checked the firewall, reinstalled TB, reinstalled my profile and still no luck. I can get email online and from the windows email app, but I like TB better, especially since I have multiple email addresses. Looking at the password manager, there's no passwords listed, but I'm never prompted for passwords either. No error messages come up. When I click 'get mail', it says that it's connected to server, then nothing happens. Help!

I don't think you can access an Excite account with a program like TB unless you pay for [http://www1.excite.com/email/gold_intro Excite Email Gold]:

Even with the Gold plan, only [http://help.excite.com/mail/help_pop.html POP access] is offered. The settings are different from the ones you have shown above.
I suggest you get a free Gmail, outlook.com or AOL account, all of which can be set up as POP or IMAP in TB.

I just upgraded to Snow Leopard and a new Imac. Could someone tell me where the preference is to change file to open in original program instead of preview?

Right-click on one of the files and choose 'get info'. in the info box. Change the 'open with' setting to your correct application. Check the 'always open with' option before OK-ing the change, then click the 'change all' button before closing the info window.

  • I have just set up Itunes match on my new iMac. It is saying I can access all my 9000 songs but only the playlist tab is live. Am I missing something?

    Hi
I have just set up itunes match on my new imac. It is saying I can access all my 9000 songs but only the playlist tab is live - I can't access albums or songs. Am I missing something?
    Thanks

    Hi,
I do not understand your problem. iTunes Match does not change the way iTunes looks. When match process is complete, the match screen tells you how much music you have in the cloud.
Across the top of screen you have options to select songs, albums, artist, composers etc.
Suggest that from main menu, select view>show sidebar.

  • Migrate to new iMac from old iMac and am getting 'incompatible software' message.

Im trying to migrate to new iMac from old iMac and am getting 'incompatible software' message. I'm not sure what to do- can I revert back to snow leopard from mavericks?

    Hi Mark,
If you install Mavericks, or in your case migrate from an old computer running Snow Leopard (or an earlier version of Mac OS X) to one using Mavericks, some of your software that was designed to run on older computers may not function in the new OS. See this article -
OS X: About the incompatible software folder
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3258
    In particular -
If you see a message indicating that you can't use "this version" of an app, contact the software's vendor or visit their website to see if a later, compatible version of the app is available. If you purchased the software from the Mac App Store, use Software Update to see if an updated version is available there.
    and
During installation, OS X moves known-incompatible software to a folder named "Incompatible Software" at the top level of the startup drive. If this folder is present on your Mac, see what applications are in it, then check for available updates. To obtain a newer version of an Apple app, check the Mac App Store, or visit the Apple Store website.
Regarding installing an older operating system on your new iMac, Apple does not support doing this, as described in this article -
Don't install a version of Mac OS X earlier than what came with your Mac

  • Help - I just purchased CS6 and downloaded onto the new iMac I just bought. I cannot get it to open

I just purchased CS6 and downloaded onto the new iMac I just bought. I cannot get it to open. I think I may have purchased a windows version in error.  When I clicked on "DesignStandard_CS6_LS16.exe I am told the application can't open because Microsoft Windows applications are not supported on OS X.  Does anyone know how to contact Adobe directly?  I keep going around and around on their site and have found no e-mail or phone number to contact them to get this straightened out.  Can anyone point me in the right direction? Thanks so much out there for any assistance!

Trying to contact Adobe over the (long) weekend is not likely to get you very far.

  • I am using migration assistant with my old MacBook and a new iMac but I'm just getting a swirling bar and spinning wheel. No signs of any progress after an hour. Drive is about 250 gbs.

The old MacBook says "the other mac is ready" and the new iMac says "successfully connected to other Mac. They are connected via Ethernet. Shouldn't there be some sort of indication of progress?   It just looks like they're stuck.
    Thanks!

  • Ideas for migrating data to new iMac from faulty eMac?

My wife's old eMac died, but she was able to copy her user folder (all 58+ GBs) to an external drive prior to it finally giving up the ghost. It was copied via finder (not cloned or done via Time Machine), so it doesn't appear to have permissions set (i.e., I can mount the disk on another computer and access all her files).
She needed her new iMac set up right away to finish some work, so only a few files have been transfered.
I don't know if Migration Assistant can deal with the files, but I'd rather not migrate her stuff at this point. Migration Assistant isn't particularly granular (i.e., you can't choose which apps or which email to transfer - it's all or nothing). I'd rather access her home folder (as the user) to clean out her files (i.e., email, downloads, iTunes, iPhoto, etc.) prior to migrating them to her new computer. At a minimum, I want to log into her old account to backup her contacts to transfer over (or access them some other way).
Can I set up a user account for her on another computer (same name and pw), go into the advanced accounts settings and point to her folder on the external drive, and then log into her account? Or do I need to do some terminal work?
I believe the HDD was corrupted by the HW failure, but if Target Disk Mode is preferable for what I want to do, then it might be worth some troubleshooting on the eMac to get Target Disk working.

  • How do I migrate Lightroom 4 onto my new iMac from old laptop?

I have just purchased a new iMac, and would like to use my version of Lightroom 4 which I have been using on my old laptop.  Can I just download it from adobe.com on the new machine and then use my previous serial number to activate it?  Is there an easy place to find my serial number if I don't have the original Lightroom packaging anymore?  Do I have to deactivate it on my old laptop, before or after setting it up on the new machine?
After all that, is it easy to bring in my photo library from the external hard drive?
Thanks for any help you can offer!

    you need that serial number.

  • Run windows migration assistant on laptop to transfer files to new iMac

Would there be too many firewalls or virus protection to not allow the migration assistant to deploy... it's loaded on my Win. 7 laptop, but won't run so i can transfer files to my new imac. Thankyou for any suggestions.

  • Migration to new IMAC from old IMAC with a Backup Drive

I purchased an new IMAC and have an old IMAC and have migrated all of my stuff from old to new, except I have a external backup drive on the old IMAC and did not migrate it. I thought that I would migrate by attaching it to the new but do not have the right cables. Can I connect the backup drive to the old with the firewire that I have and connect the old IMAC to the new one with the cables that I used, or do I have to buy the right connector to connect the backup to the new IMAC.

  • If I purchase a box set of iLife and just install the iDVD component on my new iMac should I be able to make a DVD in the format that plays on a TV DVD?

When I recently purchased my first iMac I was disappointed to find that there was no DVD making facility. I want to make a video of photo's and movie clips and then make a DVD that will play on a TV DVD player. I am thinking of purchasing a box set of iLife that includes iDVD and just installing the iDVD component. Can someone  please confirm that tyhis will work? If not any suggestions?

If you have to purchase an iLife disc in order to obtain the iDVD application remember that the iLife 11 disc only provides  themes from iDVD 5-7.  The Software Update no longer installs the earlier themes nor do any of the iDVD 7 updaters available from the Apple Downloads website contain them.
Currently the only sure fire way to get all themes is to start with the iLife 09 disc:
This shows the iDVD contents in the iLife 09 disc via Pacifist:
You then can upgrade from iDVD 7.0.3 to iDVD 7.1.2 via the updaters at the Apple Downloads webpage.
