Is it possible to mirror the display on the Macbook pro which is two years old to my iMac which is four years old? Macbook pro is running OS X Lion 10.7.5 and the iMac is running OS X 10.6.8 (10K549). Neither of them have Thunderbolt ports.

OK, well I would go with what Apple says in writing but if you want to take a trip to visit the Genius Bar that won't hurt.

yes, you can locate and copy a file from your HD to a USB key using UNIX commands. If you know the exact name of the file which you’re trying to locate, try this:
find / -iname filename -print
This command will search your entire internal disk for the particular filename. If you know that it’s within a particular user account, then you can save search time with this variation:
find /Users/username -iname filename -print
Either variation of this command will print all files found which have the given filename. Presuming that you’re able to identify the correct file, you can copy it to a USB key using the command
cp -p filename_returned_by_find /Volumes/USB_volume
If you’re not sure which volume name your USB key has, this command will show you what the possibilities are:
ls /Volumes

No external monitors or devices attached. When you mention that this function only works when devices are attached that is true when you set up your preferences that way. Up until my upgrade to Lion the computer would always go into sleep mode when I closed the lid. There also used to be an option to check in system preferences that allowed you to choose this option. My question for the discussion is what happened to that option and how do you get the computer to sleep or at least the display to sleep when you close the lid as we have been able to do in the past. The startup disk may need repairing ...
Startup your Mac while holding down the Command + R keys.
From there you should be able to access the built in utilities to repair the disk and restore OS X using OS X Recovery

wqn02h, first thing I would do is use Disk utility to repair permissions. Once this is done. Make sure you have the latest versions of the software you use. Also, check the manufacter of your printer/scanner for updated software. If they don't have updated software there are 3rd party alternatives that will work.

no, you’d need a Thunderbolt-to-FireWire adapter or Thunderbolt-to-USB adapter to be able to access your Thunderbolt hard drive from your 2008 MacBook Pro.

You should not. But it never hurts to have a backup because bad things can happen.

I have a MacBook Pro 2012 running Mountain Lion 10.7.5. I've been trying to get the mirroring icon to show up in the bar but no dice. Any tips? I've gone into System Preferences -> Display and there is no option to turn on mirroring.

My macbook pro is running at a temp of 120 F or usually above 50C is this a normal temp for it to be running at? Just had it cleaned and the one fan does seem to be working properly. it

Just had it cleaned, and made sure the one fan is working. It just seems hot to the touch, and temp is above boiling point!

My MacBook wouldn't go to sleep, it keeps loading, so I have to turn it off. When I turn it on a blank screen comes on, I shut the lid and open it and the main menu screen comes up but the cursor won't work for awhile. Then, eventually, the cursor will work and everything is fine. Hmmm?
