Is it possible to nest AE layers?

Hi all,
I've always wondered why you can't do this or it hasn't been brought in... but then maybe I'm really missing something.
I would have thought it would be really useful to be able to nest layers. For instance, put layers 5 to 9 into a folder or 'superlayer' (TM) this could be opened up or minimised in a similar fashion to the folders in the project window.
The time when I'd love to be able to do this is when I need to attach a single matte to multiple layers, but it could also be useful for effects.
I realise the normal way to do this is to make a pre-comp but sometimes it's just so handy to be able to tweak things without having to change comps.
Any thoughts?

Thanks guys.
Yes, I realise that's what Precomps achieve. Sometimes however, I personally find it useful not to have to many PreComps or levels of PreComps in a main composition. Also when I PreComp a bunch of layers thier relative in and out points aren't as immediately visable as they would be if a group of layers could be opened and closed in the main comp.
Sorry, I'm probably not explaining myself . Imagine a function a bit like 'shy' but it would open and close a group of layers, and the group itself acting as if it was a PreComp I guess is what I'm trying to say.
The idea of having 2 timelines visible is fantastic, and would help me out. Thanks for that.
Currently if I need to tweak a PreComp but view the result in the Main Comp, I open 2 comp windows. Unfortunately when I go to the PreComp my feed to my broadcast monitor also changes.
The 2 timeline idea should ease this. If I lock a single comp window.
Thanks.

Is it possible to "nest" iWeb pages?

It depends on what you mean by nesting. If you want to have Page A and then have several daughter pages  A1, A2, A3, etc. that are only accessable from Page A you can do that.
Create pages A1, A2, A3, etc. and remove them from the navbar in the Inspector/Page/Page pane:
The create a secondary navbar on Page A linking to the daughter pages: Text Based Navbar
On the daugher pages you can remove the standard navbar and only have a link back to the parent page, Page A, if you'd like. Those daughter pages will be accessable only from Page A.
If you want another nested layer you can do the same with Page A1 - create daughter pages to it.

  • Help! Is possible to recover the layers?

I need to get the layers of a psd file by mistake saved in psd
Is possible to recover the layers of a psd file that has been saved in pdf?
    thanks!

You could try opening the pdf in Illustrator, and copy all the objects back into Photoshop, or use this method: http://wegraphics.net/blog/tutorials/illustrator-quick-tip-exporting-files-to-photoshop/
...but there is a good chance Photoshop flattened parts or most of the file while converting it to pdf, so be prepared for the loss of layered work.

  • Is it possible to nest an iWeb site into another iWeb site?

    Hello,
Is ist possible to nest iWeb sites?
Let's assume I have two iWeb sites, called site A and site B. Site A is my main site, and I would like to insert site B into A, so that 'site B' appears in the navigator, and that clicking site B in site A's navigator will take me to site B?
I could drag all of site B's content elements (blog, albums etc) to A, but this would make them appear all in site A's navigator, which would give a clutter of section titles.
    Suggestions?
    Best wishes,
    Olaf.

What you do is get rid of the standard navigation by unchecking the "display navigation menu" box of the "page" inspector for each page of your site.
Build a new navigation in a text box with links to all the pages in Site A plus a link to site B. Copy and paste this navigation to all the pages of your site.
    Repeat for site B.

  • Is it possible to nest SELECT statements?

    Greetings community,
Another newbie’s question it is. Looking tutorials and some posts here I’ve been advised not to pull entire table through the local network, and torture client machines’ processors and memory. It’s been said that better solution is to
pull just one part of the table.
So, imagine this: you want to make a part of your app that would allow your user to view list of orders. So you put one data grid view on the form, pull last 20 headers from the table into it and leave to user to choose one to be opened
in another form. If user doesn’t find header they want, they press page up for example and previous 20 headers are loaded into data grid view. Of course, user could filter headers list by customer, or by distribution lane (having all customers residing in
one part of the town), or whatever more, but let’s not complicate things at this moment, because I’m practically in the beginning.
I’m trying to make a stored procedure that would load penultimate 20 headers when user presses page up. So, not knowing any better, I created table variable that has the same structure as Orders table with one difference: OrderID column,
which is identity (auto incremented) in Orders table, here is simply defined as bigint not null. Community member Visakh16 warned me few months ago it’s the bad practice to put self-incrementing columns in table variables.
At this moment there’s a query on my screen, which waits to become store procedure. After boring part with table variable definition, it goes like this:
INSERT INTO @OrdersTemp SELECT TOP 40 * FROM dbo.Orders ORDER BY OrderID DESC
SELECT TOP 20 * FROM @OrdersTemp ORDER BY OrderID ASC
To put that simply, I pull last 40 headers into table variable, and then pull first 20 from there. This thing works, and I just have to replace 40 with parameter, for every page up or down.
    Now I have few questions.
-Is there some better way (considering performance) to achieve that? Here is the place where I wanted to ask the question from the title of the post. I don’t know much about T-SQL, and I’m not sure about the proper syntax to nest SELECT
statements, if something like that is even possible
-Is there any better way (some built-in function) to find about the count of the rows in one table than
    SELECT COUNT(OrdersID) FROM dbo.Orders
    Thanks for any suggestions.

    Hi Erland,
Sorry for the very late reply, but I said that I would start another thread when I find more free time to dedicate it to this, so I didn’t really expected you to reply anymore. I didn’t really check here for more than a week, and I glanced
    at mail accidentally.
As for the negative result I got, its measurement unit is microsecond, so it doesn’t go out of margins you had experienced.
As for the number of cores, you got me surprised there. I use express edition of SQL server. Last time I checked was SQL server 2012 express, and in specifications it said that express edition is limited to 1 processor core, 1GB of RAM
and creates up to 10GB database file. I don’t believe they changed any of those specifications. It was generous enough when they doubled size of DB file few editions ago. Still, it appears that “one processor core for express edition” statement has some gray
    areas in it.
However, at this moment I’m just learning, and I just wanted some way to test how efficient my queries are. I don’t have a real biz problem to solve. I don’t expect that any real performance problem should rise in years of everyday work
of populating database. What I expect is performance impact when it comes to creating reports, but after all, I don’t think that my boss would create reports by himself. I believe that creating reports would be my task, and I will be doing it after hours,
being the only user at the moment. Or maybe I could make de-normalized copy of database that would be populated after hours to make it possible for my boss to get his reports faster by himself, as I’ve heard that was the way of making BI in older non-express
    editions.
So, I do suggest that we finally close this thread for sake of other readers. I’ll start another one with this subject when I find the time to do it.
Again, thanks for being with me along this journey.

  • Is it possible to sort PS layers by mean RGB value?

I am trying to figure out a way to sort layers in a PS file by mean RGB value (in other words, on a scale from light to dark).  Is this possible?  I know that one can stack files into layers, so another approach to doing what I want would be by sorting PS files within a folder by mean RGB value.  But I can't figure out how to do it this way either.  Can anyone help?  Thank you.

Out of curiosity, how do you define what is a darker/lighter image?
Fore example which of the two images below  is lighter/darker?

  • Select nested WMS layers with specific SRS value using XQuery

A WMS getcapabilities document contains a nested list of Layers. I need to get a list of layers for which is true: - It is queryable and - It has an SRS value of EPSG:28992 or any of it's parent layers (or parents parents etc) has an SRS value of EPSG:28992.
I came up with this query which I'm not very happy with because it only allows for three nested Layers.

A couple of options (both quite slow unfortunately) :
    XQuery recursive function :
    select x.*

       , xmltable(
           xmlnamespaces('http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink' as "xlink")

              where $i/SRS = "EPSG:4269"
              return $e[@queryable="1"] | local:getLayer($i/Layer)
            local:getLayer( /WMT_MS_Capabilities/Capability/Layer[SRS="EPSG:4269"] )'
           passing t.object_value
           columns name  varchar2(100)  path 'Name'
                 , title varchar2(100)  path 'Title'
                 , url   varchar2(4000) path 'Style[1]/LegendURL/OnlineResource/@xlink:href'
                 , style xmltype        path 'Style'
         ) x
    Ancestor axis :
    select x.*
    from tmp_xml t
       , xmltable(
           xmlnamespaces('http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink' as "xlink")
         , 'for $i in /WMT_MS_Capabilities/Capability/descendant::Layer
            where $i/@queryable = "1"
            and exists($i/ancestor-or-self::Layer[SRS="EPSG:4269"])
            return $i'
           passing t.object_value
           columns name  varchar2(100)  path 'Name'
                 , title varchar2(100)  path 'Title'
                 , url   varchar2(4000) path 'Style[1]/LegendURL/OnlineResource/@xlink:href'

I have 2 large illustrator files (lets say version 1 and version 2). If I have 40 layers on version 2 that I want to send/add to version 1, is this possible (without copy/pasting in place each individual layer?)

  • Merge possible from nested table?

I recently have started using the merge command for some of our standard 'upsert' procedures. The old design for inserts was coming from a Java web service that would send over a flat file, which in turn the Java would call an insert procedure n times while in a loop, and on each call the procedure would perform a single insert.
As you are probably already shaking your head, I realize this makes way too many database calls to be scalable and is poor design. So I now have modified the procedure to take a nested table as the input and I loop through the nested table and do all the inserts in a single procedure call. I now want to take advantage of bulk binding. I know there is the FORALL command, but I figured there was a way to do this with MERGE since the procedure does an update if a match is found instead. I didn't know if there is any syntax to do this as the oracle docs state the USING clause can be a table, view or subquery.
I am using Oracle 10gR2 and SQL Developer 3.x. This was my attempt:
    CREATE TABLE merge_table
        t_id     NUMBER(9,0),
        t_desc   VARCHAR2(100)
CREATE OR REPLACE TYPE merge_type IS OBJECT

    CREATE OR REPLACE TYPE merge_list IS TABLE OF merge_type;
CREATE OR REPLACE PROCEDURE my_merge_proc(p_records IN merge_list)

    BEGIN
        MERGE INTO merge_table MT

  • Is it possible to select multiple layers by selecting first and last layers?

I frequently get Illustrator files in that have individual objects such as paths on individual layers that could be grouped to make the layers more concise. I find that I have to shift click each individual layer to select it to eventually group it. At times, I have 25 or so layers that I need to select. Is there a way to select the first and last layer in the layers palette, and have Illustrator select all layers in between?

    Katrina,
And I guess it's the way I work. 1) I routinely select objects by selecting them from the layers palette, and not the canvas, so that I can't accidentally move an object that is the clients artwork. I prefer to work this way, as I consider it "safer". (I lock layers I'm not using) I routinely run into artists work that for instance, converted fonts to outline, and now each compound layer that is an individual letter is an object on it's own layer. 2) I need things grouped together and titled so that if I need to come back to this file and quickly fix something on press, I can tell what layer holds what object.
    3) Therefore, I frequently need to select objects in a two mile long (slight exaggeration ) list of layers/sublayers and group them, retaining them in their same layers in the event an effect has been applied at the top hiearchy of that layer.
It would be great if a key, or combination of keys, would allow me to select the top object, scroll down and select the last object, and have Illustrator select all between those two.
If you create and use selections as suggested in post #12, you do have to select individual objects when they share layers with other objects (but you can select whole layers as well) in exactly the way you are used to (1), but you only have to do it once instead of having to repeat it (3), and you have them collected with a title so you can find them again (2).
At least it is part of the way.

  • Is it possible to nest object groups in froms?

Title says it all, but to explain further - I'd like to create some object groups and the objects I'd like to include within these groups are themselves objects groups.
    Is that possible?

No - But you could subclass an object group and then add extra children to it.

  • In CS6, is it still possible to edit multiple layers at the same time?

I often color code layers in the layers panel.
In CS5 I could select several layers and change the color for all at once. Doesn't seem to work anymore in CS6.
    Screen shot: http://d.pr/i/uTjh

Hey thanks guys, this has been bugging me for weeks since I upgraded to CS6. I'm used to double clicking to manipulate several layers at once. Have been double clicking one at a time for a while. So glad I don't have to do that anymore. Cheers!

  • Why is my nested sequence layering the effects?

    Hey Everyone,
So after I color correct my master clips, I sync them, remove the unwanted audio, then nest them. BUT, in the nested sequence it seems that all the video tracks layer the video effects throwing my nested sequence in a horrible color landscape of overexposed or over colored clips! Can anyone help me?
    Mike Diaz

    JSS1138,
I apologize for the confusion, I'm new to Premiere CS6. When I import my master clips, I lay them on their respective video track 1, 2, or 3 because I usually only shoot with 3 cams (see screen shot) I label them for what camera footage they are: Camera 1, Camera 2, and Camera 3. Then I bring them into the sequence on individual tracks stacked so Plural Eyes can sync them on top of what will be my main audio recorder. Then Plural Eyes imports the all the video and audio clips back in Premiere but now all the video clips are in sync with my main audio source. Now I will have a sequence with 3 video tracks with their respective clips from their own camera synced up but not color corrected or nested on one video track yet. This is where I color correct each camera on their own video track and apply to the entire camera's footage. But the problem is when I nest all the video and audio tracks together, it overlays the effects instead of leaving the individual camera with its own effects.

Is there any way of nesting a PDF within a PDF? In word for example you can have a thumbnail image which will then open into a PDF, however when you then change the entire word document into a PDF the nested PDF files no longer open into a new window or expand at all.

You can manually attach a file in a pdf file. There is no reason the file could not be a pdf file.
