Is it possible to partition my hd without losing data for dual boot?

i have 10.6.2 as my main OS right now but want to create a separate partition and put 10.5 on it, can i do this without losing my data on snowleopard?

Sure. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder. Select the topmost entry for your hard drive - mfgr.'s ID and drive size - then click on the Partition tab in the DU main window. You should see a partition window surrounded in a light blue rectangle. At the bottom is a sizing gadget. Select it and push up to reduce the size of the existing partition enough for the size of the new partition you desire. Do not reduce it too much or you may not have enough space for your existing partition. The click on the [+] button to add a new partition in the space you've created. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed. It will take a little while so be patient. When it is completed you now have the new volume mounted on your Desktop.

  • I have Lion as my current and main OS. Is it possible to partition part of my hard drive for Snow Leopard?

I have Lion as my current and main OS. Is it possible to partition part of my hard drive for Snow Leopard? I'm good on partitioning but when I insert the Snow Leopard install disk a message tells me I can't run the install program because I currently have Lion installed... obviously. Have I gone about this the wrong way? Do I need to boot the computer using the Snow Leopard install disk instead of my main HD?

Apple will never update that as for the most part it is true, and the fact that they really don't want you to run older OS X versions (for whatever reason).
Now this probably won't work with the next line of MBPs and MBAs that come out. But it is for the current builds.
But as I stated you need one of the lastest builds of SL for it to even boot the system.
It won't work with the retail 10.6.3 DVD disc. That version does not have the correct drivers for the newest Mac's.

  • Can I change partition size of external HD without losing Data

I have an external HD that I use one partition for backup and use another partition for Time Machine. I need to change the sizes, need more on my backup. Can I change partition size of external HD without losing Data? I just changed from a Powermac G4 using Leopard to a Macbook Pro with Lion, so I am also thinkin in getting everything set up, format the Time Machine with the old stuff and make a new Time Machine.

The Disk Utility can't change the starting point of a partition without erasing it and the data on it.

  • Is it possible to clone an instance without any data?

    Hi,
Is it possible to clone an instance without any data?
Say I want to clone an instance to make a new instance on some other server so that the new clone will be same like a fresh installation without any customization and data in it.
    Thanks

    EBS with empty database
One option you have is to do another fresh install, apply all of the patches that have been applied on the current instance, then use iSetup to migrate your setups from source to target.

  • What is the proper way to convert a VHD from dynamic to basic without losing data?

    Hi,
What is the proper way to convert a VHD from dynamic to basic without losing data?
Our VM is running Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1
    Thanks in advanced

    Hi efebo,
"After you convert a basic disk to a dynamic disk, you cannot change the dynamic volumes back to partitions. Instead, you must delete all dynamic volumes on the disk and then use the
Convert To Basic Disk command. If you want to keep your data, you must first back it up or move it to another volume. "
    Please refer to following link:
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc731274.aspx
You can try to backup the dynamic volume via Windows Server Backup then restore it to a new basic VHD file ( the space is recommended to be   larger than or equal to the old one ) .
    Hope it helps

  • Bought a new macbook air because my old computer is formatted. I want to sync my iphone to my new mac, so I can save the data on my iphone without losing data. how can I do?

bought a new macbook air because my old computer is formatted. I want to sync my iphone to my new mac, so I can save the data on my iphone without losing data. how can I do?

You need to copy everything form your old computer, or your backup copy of your old computer to your new one.
The iphone is not a storage/backup device.  it simply mirrors the selected content of the computer to which it is synced.

  • Hello, I am trying to upgrade to yosemite, but I get the "disk cannot be used to startup your computer" error. Resizing the partition does not work, I get the error "MediaKit reports no such partition" probably because I installed linux in dual boot

Hello, I am trying to upgrade my macbook pro to yosemite, but I get the "disk cannot be used to startup your computer" error.
Resizing the partition does not work for me and I get the error "MediaKit reports no such partition" probably because I installed linux in dual boot and the disk manager is lost.
Anyway to tell the yosemite installer that it should not pay attention whether the disk is bootable or not ?
If I am doomed, any way to delete the installer and downloaded OS from my hard drive ?
    Thanks for your help

As usual, the Linux installer wrecked the partition table. You would have to boot from your OS X installation disc and repartition. Doing so will of course remove all data from the drive, so you must back up first if you haven't already done so.

  • Can I resync without losing data?

My computer just had a major crash, which in short caused all my itunes files to be dumped in folders around my computer. I managed to track down most of them, but I now have to empty my ipod and re sync to be able to use it with itunes again. unfortunately I have yet to find some itunes library files that will be deleted form my ipod if I sync.
    I have only 2 questions
    1. Is there a playlist file for (My) itunes playlist that I can use to sync?
    2. Can I re sync my apps WITHOUT losing data such as save games and high scores?
    Any responses would be appreciated

    1. Look around for an iTunes xml file - iTunes Music Library.xml. I believe that file contains playlists and other "format" type things.
    2. If you restore your iPod, you will lose the data with your games. If you don't have to restore it, then no, it will not be lost on a sync.
Google Pod to PC. It's a freeware program for transferring your library from your touch back to your computer. This would have saved you hours, BTW.

  • HT1212 How to reset password without losing data

Hi apple community, How do I restore an Ipod without losing data that hasn't been backed up? The photos in question were dowloaded onto the ipod from a digital camera via itunes. After downloading the computer crashed and all data was irretrievably lost.I wonder, if I reset to factory settings, will I lose all those photos? Thanks. Even before my daughter forgot her password it wouldn't let me transfer the photos from the ipod back onto the computer. I hope someone can help! Thanks.

Once the Device is asking to be Restored with iTunes... it is too late to save anything...
To minimise loss... Connect to iTunes on the computer you Usually Sync with and Restore from the most recent Backup...

  • How to switch apple id on ipad without losing data and info

i gave my dad a ipad for christmas, i set it up under my account( the mistake) so how do i switch everything to his apple id without losing everything ie songs, movies, game stats?

You can sign out and then into his Apple ID without losing data, but the iTunes Store content will remain associated with yours. Changing that requires deleting and redownloading it, which will erase application data when done on an iOS device.

If you restore you will have to restore to latest Apple's software, that frankly *****. I did it and I completely regret. On iOS 6.1.5 NOTHING works.

  • Syncing to new computer without losing data - Issue.

Hi all. I have previously made a thread on this issue but things have changed since and so has the original problem, so I thought it needed a new discussion.
I'm currently moving my iPhone from my old Vista PC to my newer Macbook Pro (OS X Lion), without losing data.
As advised, I followed this tutorial: https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3141
However, after the restore had finished, only my apps were syncing with the new computer. If I want to sync my music or tones etc, it still wants me to erase my iPhone.
Is there another way to get around this? I've reached the stage where it's syncing apps, so I'm almost there... I'd just like to sync the rest too.
    All help is appreciated.
    Thanks.

Firstly, my response was directed to the message with the picture. I don't have the same music as I had before, and unlike the OP who resolved it that way, I lost some music because in order to sync to my new computer I needed to erase all my music on my iphone first! I mean how stupid is that. Leave my music alone and put new music on it!
Look I love my iphone and I'm not hear to promote Samsung (fyi, there are other android companies). What I tried to say was that apple should stop being stupid and change itunes so that I can drag and drop, use multiple computers (because some households have that!), and not have a hassle with simple tasks like that! The ultimatium is change itunes or face costumers leaving your product behind! In the end I wish to keep using the iphone but solely because of itunes I can't and won't!
