Is it possible to password protect folders?

Is it possible to password protect a folder?

I just watched a movie called The Other Man.
Scene: Liam Neesan is perusing the desk top of his wife's MacBook Pro.
He tries to open a folder entitled, "Love"
An alert window with a locked padlock opens saying "This folder requires that you type your password"
It wasn't a disc image just an ordinary folder.
How did they do that?

Password protect the Mac Mail app is useless, and would not prevent access to your mailboxes.Your email is stored in files under your home folder,so you must password your mail folder.

  • Backing up password protected folders

I want to use the instructions in this link to create an encrypted disc image on an external hard drive so that one folder with important files is password protected.  I've never done this before.
    Two questions:
    1)  Is there a more current or better way to create a password protected folder than these instructions?  Or is this the latest and best way to do it?  (It seems like I read somewhere there is a way to password protect folders without creating a disc image, but I can't remember for sure.)
    2)  I use Carbon Copy Cloner to backup my external hard drive to a second external hard drive.  It don't have it set up to create bootable mirror copies of the drive, rather it goes file by file and simply copies whatever new files and folders were recently added.  Is there any reason to believe that the encryption and password protection on the one password-protected folder won't transfer over perfectly to the second drive?  Obviously, the copy of the password protected folder needs to work as perfectly and easily as the original.

    Dave,
When a disk image is copied (or otherwise backed up), the copy will contain the same files as the original (at the time the copy was made, of course). Also, the password for the copy will be the same as the original.
    Your files should be safe

  • Is it possible to password protect via Reader

    Hi
I use Microsoft Word to make a document and then save it as a pdf file. Since I only have Adobe Reader, would it be possible to password protect that file using Reader (Not to open the file just to prevent others from modifying it)?
    Thank you
    Mich

Adobe Reader cannot apply password security. Acrobat X Standard and Pro can.

  • Password protect folders?

Ive used this imac for abt 7 months now, but still cant figure out if there is any way to "password protect" folders... like if i store my important imformation in text files, or wish to protect some music or video files, from anyone else who ever use my computer . please do not suggest keychain if it is, as i can never use that thing , it sounds too complex al;ways , is there no other way?
    regards

hey, thanks to all of you for the replies. well i do have hot corner activated, to work as to go to screen saver whiuch is password protected, and also i have made an account fcalled friends , which is without a password, but my point is nto that, its like, u know some friends wud want to use my own space, to look into my pics, my music, my applications etc ... so i thot i cud just mqake one folder, containing my personal stuf and just block it somehow , that they cant use it at all....... but sicne we dont seem to find an answer to that, its oke, ive now used my ipod's ex.hard disk feature to store my "STUFF" LOL.. so whenever i wish to use it, i simply connect ipod to it's dock and access the files... thanks much guys..

  • Possible to password-protect folder on desktop?

My boss has to borrow my laptop tonight. I have a folder with some personal info in it - online bill pay receipts, taxes, downloaded bank statements and things of similar nature - that I don't want him to have access to. Is it possible to password protect a folder? This isn't a case of having multiple users for one computer - I am the only user & administrator; I just want to apply a password to a folder before it can be opened. Is this possible? Thanks!

    Hi,
I realise you mentioned it in passing, but for what you describe setting up a new user would be the simplest and safest option. This way your boss won't be able to do any kind of damage (accidental or not) within your account and keep all your items private at the same time.
You can use System Preferences -> Accounts -> \[+\] to create a new user (and \[-\] to remove it later)

  • How to password protect folders

I have looked on the forums and I have found that it is somehow possible, but there are no explanations on how to do it, it just shows how to hide the folders. I don't want to hide anything, I would just like to password protect the folder. How can I do this?

Bokat57's suggestion is an excellent one, suitable for almost any purpose. The subject folder is well-protected, and when the encrypted disk image is opened, the folder and its contents can be manipulated and changed just as in their original, unencrypted state. (The only thing to watch out for is that you can't expand the folder and its contents beyond the size of the disk image you create.) Finally, when you're done with the folder, just eject the disk image and everything is all encrypted again.
Spotlight will not, by default, index the contents of the expanded folder. It can, however, be enabled via terminal. With the disk image open, enter this command in terminal:
    sudo mdutil -i on /Volumes/[volumename]
    - where [volumename] is the name of the expanded, mounted disk image. There is little downside to enabling indexing in this fashion, because the index for that volume is stored on the disk image, and when it's ejected (i.e., re-encrypted), it becomes invisible to Spotlight. That means that Spotlight only works to search it while it's mounted. When it's not mounted, the contents are private again.

  • Is there a way to password protect folders on the home screen of my IPad 2??

I created folders on my IPad 2 and I wanted to know if I can password protect them?  Any information would be appreciated...

You can not password protect individual folders, sorry.  You can password protect your iPad, so someone else can't just turn it on and use it without the password, but not for specific folders.

  • Password Protect Folders/Pictures

I have a motorola xoom and a razr maxx and have not been able to find any information or how to's on the following:
Can you password protect certain folders or apps?  I have a five year old son and he frequently plays games and apps on my phone and tab, but I don't want him to access certain apps or files.  So I moved them into a folder on the home screen, but can't find a way to lock the folder.  Does anyone know how to lock the folders (password protect) or apps?
I also have pictures that I would like to move from the camera/gallery and hide the pictures, but can't seem to do this to photos that are already in the gallery?

As demmo86rt stated, a third party app from the Play Store will accomplish this - ES File Explorer allows you to "hide" folders, and move things to and from an SD Card more easily than the built in file system; other file manager apps may allow passwording and other options.  Explore the Play Store, read reviews, try the apps to see what works for you.

  • Is it possible to password protect albums in iPhoto

    Hi all,
some of the albums I have in iPhoto contain material not suitable to everyone having acces to my Mac. So I would like to password protect certain albums. Is that possible?

Ehhh indeed, there are a couple of very easy ways to do this:
Have two accounts: one for you and one for everybody else.
    Or
Put these files on an encrypted disk image.
Look at it from a programmer's point of view: you want everything to be open and accessible except for the bits you don't want open and accessible. These bits that are not to be shared are arbitrary and defined by you alone and based on content. iPhoto may know that Jpeg is a photograph, but has no way of knowing what it's a photo of. The only way to protect things is to change their format. So, you encrypt the file. iPhoto doesn’t offer encryption - it's a $15 photo app and does not claim to offer everything -  so you use the two options the  OS offers for doing the same job.

  • Possible? Password protecting external drives

Is it possible to make all external drives password protected to make changes to, or even access? I can't find anything obvious particularly in "disc utility" or elsewhere.
    Thanks, Chris

No, OS X provides no such facility. You can get third-party software that can do that. Look for it at VersionTracker or MacUpdate.
What you can do instead is to create an encrypted disc image using Disk Utility and put the image on the external drive. Then move whatever you want secured onto the disc image file. Delete the originals. When the disc image is mounted it will require a password to access whatever is stored on it. If you want to be able read and write data on the disc image then make it a read/write image file when you create it.

  • Is it possible to password protect Movies in the new Web Gallery?

I have loaded several iPhoto albums onto my new Web Gallery - and I can password protect each using a different name and password for various friends and family. This is great as they each then have their own privacy. Some I have left open to view by everyone. BUT, I would like to password protect some movies from iMOvie '08. Can this be done for the movies as per the photo albums - and how? If yes - can it also be done for movies already published or will they have to be re-published?
    thanks
    Alan

The best I can figure out is that if you post your movie, but do not select the option to "Show project on Web Gallery home page," the video will not show on your home page for random visitors, but you can send the direct link to your video to whomever you want by copying it from the confirmation page after the video uploads. Not perfect, but the only option I see right now.
