Is it possible to play HDV in quicktime pro or iMovie

I'm trying to import HDV video footage from my Hard drive into Imovie. However It will not import, so I have converted the files to AVi, Mpeg-4 and DV but I only get sound with a blank white thumbnail. Can anyone suggest how to do this?

'HDV' is a codec for HD on miniDV, not harddrives..
so, you want to import HD from a harddrive-camcorder into iMovie?
this is supported only by iM08/09.. connect device via usb, goto 'Import from camera'.
if you like to handle HD from a HDDcorder in iM vers5/6, you have to:
• manually copy files via Finder from cam to Mac
• convert files to AppleIntermediateCodec, iMHD5/6 internal codec for HD-video
most recommended: Mpeg Streamclip + 20$-mp2-playback-component from apple.com/quicktime..

  • Can't Play HDV 1080p24 Quicktime Movie - PLEASE HELP!

I have a self-contained Quicktime file that plays fine using the Quicktime application on my computer that has Final Cut Pro installed on it. However, when I move that Quicktime to my computer that does not have Final Cut Pro, it says I don't have the proper codec. (It plays the audio fine, but the video is just a black screen.)
Can I download this specific codec on my non-FCP computer so that I can play this file?
Here are the specifics on the Quicktime in question:
    Format:
    HDV 1080p24, 1440 x 1080 (1888 x 1062), Millions
16-bit Integer (Little Endian), Stereo, 48.000 kHz
And, if it helps at all, we footage was created with a Canon XL-H1 camera, imported into FCP, edited, and exported as a Quicktime file using current settings. And, the non-FCP computer does have Quicktime Pro installed.
    Thanks!

Gonna have to look at a third party solution...
#51 - Cannot view DVCPRO HD or HDV or ProRes on my computer.
Shane's Stock Answer #51 - Cannot view DVCPRO HD, HDV or ProRes QT files on your computer.
The DVCPRO HD, HDV and ProRes codecs only comes with FCP. If your computer does not have FCP installed, it cannot view these quicktime files. It doesn't matter if it is a Mac or PC, without FCP installed, you cannot view these files.
If you need to view ProRes material, you can download the ProRes decoder (mac and windows compatible) for ProRes
    http://support.apple.com/downloads/AppleProRes_QuickTime_Decoder_1_0_forWindows.
    http://support.apple.com/downloads/AppleProRes_QuickTime_Decoder_1_0_forMac
If your footage was captured as DVCRO HD you can buy the Calibrated DVCPRO HD decoder:
    http://www.calibratedsoftware.com/QDVCProHD.asp
HDV, XDCAM? Calibrated has you covered too:
    http://www.calibratedsoftware.com/QXD.asp
If you have MXF files from a P2 camera and you need to view the footage on a computer without FCP, you can download P2CMS from Panasonic:
    http://www.panasonic.com/business/provideo/p2-hd/downloads-and-updates.asp
Or you need the other party to compress the footage into a format your computer can play, like H.264.

  • Trouble playing HDV on Quicktime

    Can anyone help?
I have Quicktime Pro 7.1.2. I'm trying to play media files from a DVD that's part of an Apple Certified course (FCE HD). The standard NTSC footage plays fine, but the HDV footage sticks for both audio and video.
    Movie Info...
16-bit Integer (Little Endian), Stereo 48k
    H.264 Decoder, 1920 x 1080, Millions
    29.97fps
    89.48 mbits/sec
    many advance thanks
    Aldo

Thank you for the quick and informative reply. That would make sense.
Strangely though, the Apple Certified book system requirements page would suggest my G4 iBook is well above spec. The accompanying DVD comes with Quicktime 6.4. Do you think the HDV footage would play on my G4 if I was using this older version of Quicktime?

  • .mp4 H.264 not playing correctly in Quicktime Pro

    Here is all my information:
Format: H.264 Decoder, 720x480 Millions AAC, Mono, 48.000 kHz
    FPS: 23.98
    Data Size: 1.86 GB
    Data Rate: 2695.08 kbits/sec
Normal Size: 640 x 480 pixels (this is the current size too)
The Problem: I have perfect audio, but the video seems extremely choppy and lags. I wanted to do simple editing of some video and I thought that the Quicktime Pro may help this file play better, so I just bought Quicktime Pro to see that it does not help the file play any better. Could there be a setting that I'm missing somewhere? My roommate has Quicktime Pro on Windows and the file plays for him perfectly. The file also plays fine on VLC... So I thought it must be a setting that I am missing. Thanks.

It depends on which version of Windows Media Player they're using. If they're still on XP, it's very possible it won't work.  Anyone using Windows 7 or 8 should have no problem.  (And perhaps it does need to be said, but everyone should be using either 7 or 8 by now.)
At least one of them was on Windows 7.
Is there a better format I should be using for PP export other than H.264?

  • Help! I cannot play VCD with QuickTime Pro.

I tried to open a .DAT file with QuickTime Pro which alerted me with the following message:
QuickTime cannot open the file AVESQ04.DAT it is not a file that Qucik Time understands (-2048).
However, I read the Help in apple.com, they said it should work. What did I do wrongly???

I have found that if you copy the DAT files to your hard drive, and then change the "DAT" to "MPG" in the file name that Quicktime will play them.
It's been a while, so if I am wrong and "MPG" doesn't work, try "MOV" instead.
I'm pretty sure it was MPG though.
I remember I did this a long time ago, and it worked great.

  • Is it possible to transfer my downloaded QuickTime Pro software from my old computer to my new computer?

Is it possibile to transfer my downloaded QuickTime Pro software from my old computer to my new computer?  I don't want to buy it again if I can help it.

Open the QuickTime Player 7 app and look under the Edit menu / Preferences / Registration window to copy down the name, org and number.
Install the free player on the new machine and enter the registration info and test. If everything works as it should erase the registration info on the old machine.

  • PLEASE HELP!  Quicktime Pro with iMovie and .MPG Files

Hello. Please help me. I'm on a G5. 10.5.3. iMovie 7.1.2 (577) I have a series of .MPG files that I need to import into iMovie to edit, arrange and then export over to iDVD, etc. iMovie does not see the .MPG files. The Apple site states that iMovie sees only MPEG-4 files and DV files. I also own Quicktime Pro 7.5 (149.5). When I open the .MPG file in Quicktime Pro, even though the file plays perfectly, when I select "Export to MPEG-4" so I can create a readable file by iMovie, I get an error message that say's "Failed: Export process terminated unexpectedly (10). Complete frustration. Is there another way I can convert these files so iMovie can see them? What's wrong with my Quicktime Pro? I bought DivX Pro last night. I thought maybe that program would make an iMovie readable file. No luck. I used DivX to convert and it created a DivX file with NO SOUND. Wasted money.
If anyone has any solutions for my problems noted here or possible alternatives so I can achieve what I'm trying to do successfully, PLEASE ADVISE as soon as possible.
Thank you for taking the time to read this and THANKS, in advance, for your help.

You'll get a ton of ideas from others so, by no means, don't think that mine will solve your issue. I, personally have fallen in love with [StreamClip|http://www.squared5.com>. It does a ton of stuff.
As for your Error 10, hopefully that's just an "out of space" (on your drive) error and not an I/O error (a problem with the drive reading/writing)
But, you said you have Quicktime Pro and you're going to iMovie so I'd try to make your .MPG files a DV Stream...I think that's what I movie likes.
    Anyway try that,
    Tom

  • QuickTime Pro? iMovie? iveZeen? BTV Pro?

I would like some input as to suitable software for my purposes. Eventually I want to make HD digital movies, but as a first step I simply want to explore the possibilities of digital movie making by using the iSight camera on my G5. This is what I want to do at the moment:
+1. Use my iSight camera to capture up to 90 minutes of footage in one go.+
+2. Edit and combine that footage with preexisting footage. Nothing fancy, just simple abrupt scene changes.+
+3. Sound is not essential, but would be good to have to explore the possibilities.+
It is surprising to me how difficult it is (for me) to do the first step. Here are the difficulties:
+* The iMovie (version 5) that came with my G5 doesn't recognize the iSight camera;+
+* BTV Pro accepts input from the camera but seems unable to capture more than a few minutes without problems (it was last updated in 2002 so I suppose its a wonder it works at all);+
+* iveZeen doesn't allow recording until you purchase a licence -- and I'm not buying sight unseen.+
So it appears I'm left with two choices (correct me if I'm wrong): buy Quicktime Pro or iLife 2009 so that I can get hold of a version of iMovie that works with my iSight camera.
For my simple requirements, which is the best way to go at this stage?

    Hello Guy,
If your Mac is working correctly, QuickTime Pro will do what you want (and MUCH more). I include the caveat because of your statement that your iMovie does not recognize your built-in iSight camera and that you are having problems recording long clips with non-Apple Software.
All digital video recording places a heavy load on your Mac due simply to the size of the data stream that you are capturing and storing. Do everything you can to lighten your Mac's load while recording video:
      • Quit all apps before launching your digital recording apps.
      • Run only the one app while you are recording.
      • Add RAM if you have not already done so.
      • Make sure that your Mac OS X Maintenance is up to date.
(10.5 does this for me automatically, but my 10.4 and earlier
OSX Macs that do not run 24/7 require this maintenance.)
      • Make sure you have LOTS (50-75%) of free disk space
so disk-writing does not slow your Mac.
Hopefully, the only reason that your iMovie will not recognize your built-in iSight is that you need a newer version of iLife. As stated in this Apple kBase article, To use the built-in iSight ..., use iMovie HD 6 or later.
I think that Apple now sells iLife '09 only. iLife '09 requires that you use Mac OS X 10.5.6 or later, so you will need to look elsewhere for an earlier version of iLife unless you plan to upgrade your Mac OS. At this time, versions earlier than iLife '09 versions are still available from sources other than Apple if you so desire.
For example, iLife '06 (which contains iMovie HD 6) still shows as available from some internet sources.
Alternatively, iLife '08, which contains iMovie '08 (version 7.x), is still available at my local Apple resellers and VARs, so you may still be able to find this version in your area. Your iMac G5 (iSight) meets the iLife ’08 system requirements, so iMovie '08 (except for the AVCHD video and 24-bit recording functions, which require an iNtel processor Mac) will work with your G5 iMac (iSight).

  • Playing HDV in quicktime

I have a macbook pro 2.16. I can play and edit video in FCP but when I open a file in quicktime it will not show the video.

Your machine is missing the codec used by Final Cut. The Pro upgrade to QuickTime Player doesn't add any components.
The Movie Inspector window will tell you the codec.

  • How to play DVDs in Quicktime Pro

I recently purchased QT, and QTPro. I was trying to transfer DVDs to my 60GB Video ipod, but I cannot even open any movie in Quicktime. Now my goal is just to get a DVD to play in quicktime. I choose file->open file, and select the drive my video is in, and there are three folders, JACKET_P, VIDEO_TS, AUDIO_TS, and the only one with anything in it is the VIDEO, but I open it and nothing is listed unless I change the "files of type" (prompt on bottom of open dialog box)from movies to all files. When all files are listed, I get a bunch of VTS_## files (and they are either VOB or BUP type), and a VIDEO_TS file, and it is an IFO file. If I choose the last one, I get the error message -2048: the file is not a movie file, and the same happens for all the files. I hope you can shed some light on my problem. [QTPro is registered, my PC does meet all the requirements, and I have tried numerous DVDs. If I right-click on the movie in windows explorer, and choose properties, then autoplay, I am given the option of what I would like to use to autoplay the movie. QT is not listed, nor can I browse.]

I don't think I've seen Apple or anyone else advertises QuickTime as being able to play DVDs, so I'm not sure why you assumed that it would. To answer the original posters question, I'm not particularly familiar with how to do it under Windows, but it is most certainly possible to convert video from DVDs to a format that can be played on the iPod. There are several tutorials around the web that will tell you how to do it step-by-step.
(BTW, Apple has this to say about DVD playback in QuickTime:
"Can the QuickTime MPEG-2 Playback Component play back DVDs?
The MPEG-2 Playback Component can play back MPEG-2 files on non-encrypted DVDs. Professionally produced, commercial DVDs (such as Hollywood movies) are usually encrypted with special anti-piracy software, called Content Scramble System (CSS). In order to view these DVDs, decryption software is required and is included in DVD players. But decryption software is not included in QuickTime or the QuickTime MPEG-2 Playback Component.")

  • Help!  Avi's are playing back through quicktime (pro) white images,no sound

Okay, so i have some videos that are avi files. One was emailed to me from one person, and others are from a totally unrelated person-theyre now on my mac web gallery. Anyway, when i open them through safari or quicktime, the movies seem to play back (my one friend's has no sound and is white screen; the gallery videos have sound but no image, same thing, all white) but have a white screen instead of the movie image.
Any suggestions?? I'm soo lost and really need these videos!

Download and install Perian. Note that some AVIs will not work in Mac OS X; AVI is a container, not a format.

  • Optimal settings for quicktime pro for imovie hd

    Hi!
Using QT Pro, I sent an imovie HD file (about 5 minutes) thru using h.264. It all looks pristine! EXCEPT, the transitions from imovie are bumpy, choppy, go backwards, etc.
This is to be streamed on the web. I've kept the 1920 x 1080 settings in tact.
QUESTION: What can I do to tweek the settings so the transitions are better? Would changing the key frame rate help? I left it on automatic.
    Thanks for the help!

    2.5millionyears wrote:
Here is the core question: My machine is an imac with a 2 gig processor and 2 gig of RAM. It should be able to handle a 69 MB file. (It plays back the 2 GB imovie file just fine.) Therefore, I believe the issue is not processing speed, rather, the issue seems to be that of how QT compresses the source video. It is very jerky on my machine, not on the web, not on a slow computer, but on my machine.
This is not entirely correct. The fact that the video is smaller is probably due to it being compressed by something like the H.264 codec. This actually requires more processor power than the 2 GB file (probably Apple Intermediate Codec) in iMovie.

  • Recording using Quicktime Pro

I am trying to record a video which streams across my internet connection; the video uses Quicktime player.  I thought it was possible to do this using Quicktime Pro, so yesterday I spent $30 on the upgrade, but when I right clicked on the video screen and chose "Save as Quicktime Movie" and the destination folder, as that is there is 809 bytes of data, even though the info states the correct length of the movie.  I can click on the movie, and it opens a new screen and will play, but it is streaming, and I really need this to be where I can watch and listen to it offline.
Can anyone help me with this issue, if possible?  I hope I didn't waste $30.
    Thanks!
    JY

I don't know about any YouTube "streaming media". All I've ever seen is "progressive downloads".
Progressive downloads allow playback while the file continues to download. Streaming media is served from special server software that sends "hint tracks" and you can step through playback at any point in the file. You could view the last minute of an hour long streaming file as soon as you got the initial file started.

  • Quicktime Pro won't recognize my video camera.

The video camera is attached to the computer via Firewire. I checked and the computer recognizes that the camera is attached by Firewire.
I'm trying to transfer already-shot video from the video camera into Quictime Pro, but when I turn on the camera and play the video and click the NEW MOVIE RECORDING link in Quictime - I get a message "NO RECORDING DEVICE FOUND".
Does anyone know what I have to do to get Quicktime Pro to recognize the video camera?
    Thanks

When I import the video into iMovie, iMovie squashes the widescreen video into a rectangle with the dimensions of a TV screen, and there doesn't seem to be any way to turn it back into a distortion-free widescreen image.
I would upgrade iMovie (from 3.03), but Apple doesn't seem to sell the upgrade anymore (not that will work in OS X 10.3.9.)
I have Quicktime Pro and iMovie and I can't get the video out of my camcorder and into my computer.

  • Can anyone help with Quicktime Pro audio prob?

I've been trying to compress an audio/video file shot on my Cybershot so that I can upload on a contest website. Every time I copy into I-Movie, I have no audio (although it plays fine on my desktop). I was told I-Movie does not support muxed streaming. At Apple's recommendation, I upgraded to Quicktime Pro.
The audio and video both work fine when I play it in Quicktime Pro; but when I export it from Quicktime to either MPEG4 or Quicktime Movie, I get no audio. (Also, the audio setting area is grayed out.) Any suggestions? I need to send the file 320X240 around 15 mb by midnight tonight.
    Thanks for the help...

Use the "Export to DV" option. (Any of the sub options will work.) Split into segments if needed for older versions of iMovie.
