Is it possible to print duplex from InDesign CS5?

There is no "duplex" option in the print dialog box of InDesign. I have duplexers on both my printers. When I tried to save it as a pdf and print that way, half the page sides are oriented upside down. I don't have a choice of "Flip on long side" or "Flip on short side", which I expected to see in either Adobe reader or InDesign.

What Jacob Bugge said.
In InDesign CS5:
Print (brings up window) > Printer (tab at bottom of print window; clicking brings up another window) > Layout (drop-down menu) > Duplex Printing & Margin > click "Duplex Printing" and modify Print Area and Stapling Side
In Adobe Acrobat 9 (full version -- don't know if it's the same in Reader):
Print (brings up window) > Copies & Pages (drop-down menu)  > Duplex Printing & Margin > click "Duplex Printing" and modify Print Area and Stapling Side
I have a Canon printer. Don't know if all the submenus are exactly the same, but I'd imagine they're similar.

  • Cannot print directly from InDesign CS5, must export to PDF

My co-worker and I have not been able to print to our Ricoh Aficion SP C811DN from InDesign since upgraded to CS5. We both experience similar errors (ERROR: undefined, OFFENDING COMMAND: o [or C, or some other letter] and then STACK: XXX). We are both running Windows XP, I am 64-bit, she is not. The only workaround thus far is exporting to PDF and printing from there.
I have tried printing single random pages and omitting graphics but neither of these seems to work. I did create a new document and inserted a single black box with white text and that printed just fine, but anything more complicated won't print.
Thanks for your help in advance.

Honestly, that’s the general advice anyway.
I never print from InDesign. It’s just not that efficient.
BTW, Windows XP64 is completely unsupported. Time to move to Windows 7.

  • Printing: shift from InDesign CS5 to Corel Draw

I have been making a brochure for the techfest of my college in InDesign CS5.....
We have the quotations from one of our known printing press which uses "plate printing technology"...
The problem is: they are saying that they do not support InDesign for printing purpose and they say that they are using CorelDraw for the printing purpose....
So can any one tell me a solution for this sort of problem???
PS: I think printing press people might be requiring PostScript or EPS file... Please help me with this problem....
    Thank You
    Ankit.

    Ankit,
I do understand the problem of finding reliable print service providers, no matter where one is located.
What you should be looking for is not a print service provider who takes InDesign documents, but rather, PDF files exported from InDesign. PDF files are now the standard for providing printers with press-ready content. The preferred PDF, especially if your content has any transparency effects (including drop shadows, clipped images, etc.) and/or RGB content, is PDF/X-4 which maintains content at the highest level of abstraction and minimizes any problems associated with color conversions and transparency.
We certainly do encourage you to participate in an InDesign User Group. Go to <http://www.indesignusergroup.com/> for further information on InDesign User Groups or <http://www.indesignusergroup.com/contact/contact_startgroup.php> for information on how to start a new group. (From what I can best determine, there is not yet such a group in India although ironically, Adobe has a very large development organization in Noida, outside of Delhi!)
    Good luck!

  • Why does "Print Booklet" from Indesign CS5.5 only create low res pdf? How do I get High Res for Offs

Long time ID user in Agency. Created a simple 4 page brochure in CS5.5 ID. Facing pages for cust size 11x17 half fold document.
Generating the pdf for Press and HQ Print renders a nice high res document, but the print booklet feature only produces a skinny low res version. Tried to mess with the printer settings, but the result is the same with a skinny low res document.
I didn't want to recreate the brochure as a two page manually imposed as I like the option of being able to add more pages in increments of four of course. Plus it's just silly to do that when ID is supposed to handle it for me.
I worked around it this time by printing to .ps output then distilling, and then splitting the document so printer could have a "front" and "back" 11x17. But this seems kludged big time. This has to be a bug unless I am missing something.

You probably never changed the default settings in the PDF printer properties. In the print booklet dialog, click the Print Settings button, then the Setup button at the bottom of the Print Dialog that pops up, choose the PDF printer and click on Preferences. Reset the default reset the default settings to the ones you really want to use, or reset them in Windows... Control Panel > Devices and Printers... Double-click the PDF printer, then from the print queue dialog, Printer > Properties... General tab and clcik the Preferences button.

  • Is there any way to print directly from InDesign CS3 to Mavericks 10.9.4?

Are there any fixes or workarounds that allow me to print directly from InDesign CS3 to Mavericks 10.9.4. Everything I try now causes InDesign to freeze if I attempt to print. The only way is to export the file as a PDF. Thank you.

You shouldn’t be having a problem like that. I’m going to move this to the InDesign forum but it would help if you posted more details on the issues you’re having.
Another thing to try is exporting to INX from CS3 and opening the INX in CS5.5

  • Why are jpegs printing dark from InDesign?

When I create documents with jpegs, they print very dark from InDesign CS5.5. When I print the jpeg from my desktop, it comes out exactly as it appears on my monitor.
I'm sure there is a setting that I need to change, but I'm not sure what it could be.

    OK. That's a start.
If you go to Edit > Color Settings... Does the dialog say they are sychronized? If not, you should do the same in Photoshop and make note of what the settings are, then in Bridge go to Edit > Creative Suite Color Settings and reset them there to the ones from Photoshop, then go back to your InDesign File and go to Edit > Assign Profiles... and assign the smae RGB and CMYK profiles listed for the color settings in Photoshop.
That should give you the same output, but there's still one more place to check. In the Print dialog, under Output, reset the Send Data field to All.

  • Cannot print duplex from Preview

When I use my Epson Stylus Photo RX680 to print a document in Pages, I can use the duplex setting to print on both sides of the paper; when I print a document from Preview, the duplex setting is unavailable—grayed out. I've tried opening a PDF in Acrobat Reader, but that has almost no flexibility in print settings, thus no duplex setting.
How can I print a PDF on both sides?

I don't have an Epson RX680 and regrettably am not familiar with that printer, but let me ask you a couple of clarifying questions that, if it doesn't solve your issue outright, will hopefully provide some additional info for other pro bono helpers here to guide their troubleshooting suggestions.
    1. In the print dialog box that presents the printer pulldown menu and presets pulldown menu, there is a button to the right of the printer pull-down with either a ▲ or a ▼ symbol. If it is ▼, click on that button to expand the print dialog box to reveal additional print dialog box configuration options.
    2. Underneath the newly revealed "Orientation" buttons, there is another pulldown menu that, at least on mine right now, has "Preview" selected. When you activate that pulldown menu, do you have a "Layout" choice? Can you select it or is it grayed out?
    3. If you can select that, some additional pull-down menus will be revealed, one of which is "Two-Sided." Choices within there, at least for me, are off, long-edge binding, and short-edge binding. Do you have those options and can you select any of them other than "off" or are those options grayed out?
    4. If you can get that far, then you should be able to click on the print button, in order to print duplex from your duplex-capable printer.

  • Print booklets from InDesign.

I used to create print booklets from InDesign but this option disappeared with version CS5. Is Adobe doing anything about restoring this feature? What are my options in the meantime?

    Are you patched to 5.0.4?
I run XP SP2, rather than 3, and Acrobat 9 pro (now at version 9.3.2) and I haven't had a problem using Print Booklet to make a PDF, so I suspect either it's something in SP3, or more likely a problem on the system.
First thing might be to try replacing your preferences. See Replace Your Preferences
Next might be to unistall the PDF printer and reinstall it (does it work outside of Print Booklet?). Make sure you update Acrobat first, if you haven't already done so.
If neither of those works, see if there's anything else running in the background that could be causing a problem.
Finally, if nothing is working, it's time to look at a scripted solution. I know two scripts, both by Dave Saunders, that can handle simple two-up saddle stitch impositions without creep. One is better than the other if you have objects crossing the spine, but neither is as sophiticated in what it can do as Print Booklet, which can handle perfect binding with various signature sizes.

  • Cannot print A3 from InDesign to Canon clc 4040 printer

Hi I have a problem that may or may not have anything to do with InDesign...
Office with 5 Mac Pros, PowerPC models, all running identical OSX 10.5.latest, Adobe CS4 everything.
All software up to date. Basically all machines identical.
All users are storing their files on the same network volume.
3 Macs can print A3 to the Canon clc 4040 but 2 cannot. This is Mac20 used by Kirsti and Mac07 used by Kevin.
If Kirsti sits at Mac20 she cannot print A3 from InDesign. It prints an A4 page, being part of the whole A3 document (its not the A3 doc shrunk to fit A4) The same goes for all other apps including MS Word. Page setup =A3, printer setup = A3, result... printer prints A4. BUT she can print A3 from Quark XPress 8.0.
If Kirsti logs in to another Mac she still cannot print A3 BUT the usual user of that Mac CAN print A3. But if they try to print Kirsti's files A3 they cannot.
All Macs have exactly the same driver from Canon. Latest version 2.0 from their website.
Deleting the InDesign preferences from the Mac makes no difference.
    All Macs on same network.
All connecting to Canon clc 4040 via network using IP or using Bonjour. Same result with either protocol.
I have deleted and re-installed the printer countless times.
The only "work around" is to remove the A4 tray and "force" the printer to use A3.
The above scenario is the same for Kevin on Mac07
The Canon CLC 4040 has a "Fiery RIP" whatever that is...
Can anyone point me at where the problem lies? I have had a Canon tech on site but he could do nothing.
Message was edited by: Triumph5ta, corrected a typo.

My experience is with CS2 on OS 10.3.9 and 10.4.11, so this may have changed in CS3, or 10.5....
Setup a custom paper size for your printer.
This can be accessed from within the InDesign Print window.
    File > Print
    Select your printer from the
Printer: pulldown menu (if not already selected)
    Click
Page Setup... at the bottom left
    Click
    Settings and then select
Custom Paper Size from the list of options
    Click
New, name the style, define the paper size and printable margins, and save it.
Click OK to exit the page setup.
In the InDesign Print Window, Click on
    Page Setup... again
    Select
Your New Paper Size in the Page Setup
Paper Size: pulldown, then click OK.
    InDesign Print window
Setup should reflect the new page size and list the paper size as "Defined by Driver"
If your document page size is the same as your paper size, then the preview in the lower left should reflect that.

  • Why does black turn grey when creating a pdf from InDesign CS5??

Why do blacks turn to grey when I create/export a pdf from InDesign CS5?

Unfortunately, things like this are rarely glitchy little programming errors but deep, by-design, problems with using colour management. Usually you are getting exactly what you asked for, just not what you want, and the more colour management options there are, the more likely this is.
There are many possible causes, but one of the easiest to do is and hardest to spot is applying a CMYK profile in InDesign export, and a different one through Photoshop settings. This is actually demanding that colours be converted for the worst! Since your print workflow will be different, a work-around of rich black is likely to make things worse.
So the first thing to check is whether the colours you indended made it to the PDF, indeed. Output Preview is the first tool to use (as well as inspecting plates, you can hover over points to check the colour mix).
Also, go to your PDF export under the "Output" tab which includes colour and PDF/X. Either send a screen shot, or read off all of the the settings there.

  • Large PDFs from Indesign CS5 under Lion

Has anyone noctived the incredibly large PDFs exported from Indesign CS5 under OS X 10.7 Lion?...
When OS X 10. Snow Leopard all was great, though now I have noticed HUGE differences!!??
crazy. example Indesign exported to pdf 106mb
Print to file, then Distiller: 32mb
    BIG DIFFERENCE
    anyone else?
    thanks

Ok lets forget the Distiller part of this story, sorry.
My issue is that under Lion PDF's are WAY larger than in previous OS X (Snow Leopard etc)
I don't have any Mac on Snow Leopard to now show a comparison only previous PDF's made before Lion was installed and they are signifcantly smaller.
I just tested I think it is new documents made in Indesign CS5 in Lion.
Testing a indd file previously made in Snow Leopard I exported a PDF it produced the same size PDF as in Snow Leopard, so now I am confused slightly hoping I am wrong. Then I exported that same .indd as a .idml opened and saved as .indd then exported as a PDF it is 150kb larger... small difference yes, though  ot enough to worry about, so I tried with previous larger files... only to have them create the satisfactory sized pdf.
Ok, I am wondering if newly created documents are the issue?...
Moving on I found then I found this..  http://www.creativepro.com/article/drop-20-pounds-indesign
I have just done a space audit most of the file is the images, my only conclusion is that the images are containing meta data that is hogging?...

Acrobat 9 Professional was bundled with Creative Suite 5 Design Standard so shouldn't this work? My machine is running OS X 10.6.7, Acrobat Pro 9.44 and InDesign CS5 7.04.

  • Exporting to .pdf from InDesign CS5

Probably a real simple question to answer, but I'm stumped.  I'm trying to export a 6 page newsletter to a .pdf format from InDesign CS5; it comes out as a 4 page document with the following orientation:  The first page is fine (vertical on letter size), the 2nd & 3rd pages show up side by side (horz./letter) as does pages 4 & 5.  The 6th page again is fine (vertical/letter).  I never had this issue with CS4...  Any suggestions?  Thanks in advance,   Wharton

    Hi Tom,
I looked up the Spreads option in InDesign help to see what you were referring to...   I see most of the options described, but the Spreads option doesn't appear to available in the "Export to Interactive PDF" pop-up box.
The options I've chosen are:  Pages-All; View after Exporting; Embed Page Thumbnails; View-Default; Layout/Single Page; Presentation-Open in full screen Mode; Page transitions-None; Buttons and Media-Include all...  I don't believe that the Image Handling section would be the issue, but I chose, JPEG (Lossy), Maximum quality and a resolution of 300.
    Thanks

  • Running OS 10.6.8 on a 3.06 GHz Intel Core i3 Mac can I upgrade from Indesign CS5 to CS6?

Running OS 10.6.8 on a 3.06 GHz Intel Core i3 Mac can I upgrade from Indesign CS5 to CS6?

They do, but what happens when the client(s) move to CC? Of course doing
so opens a new can of worms for you since 10.6.8 is unsupported for
    anything later than CS6.
You should start budgeting for some upgrades sooner rather than later.

  • Is it possible to create a PDF "print" button from InDesign behaviors?

In Acrobat, there is a way to create a button with a behavior for "print" that will queue the document up for printing. I don't see a way to do this on the InDesign end, though, via behaviors. Something that will export from InDesign and carry over to the PDF. As this is something I'd like to use on every page, adding it to a template would be much easier than manually adding these to each page in Acrobat post-export.
Any guidance anyone can offer would be greatly appreciated.

In Acrobat, Print is a button option, however, it only opens the Print dialog box, so the user can set choices and then print.
