Is it possible to remote-access my MacBook Pro away from home?

Is it possible to remote-access my MacBook Pro away from home?
What I currently have:
Late-2011 MacBook Pro 8,2 (OSX Mavericks 10.9.5)
2.5ghz Intel i7 quad-core
16gb RAM, 1024gb SSD raid-0 (internal)
Connecting to the internet through:
Apple Time Capsule 2TB (via ethernet)
+
Time Warner Cable "Ultimate 100" (top speed)
I would basically like to be able to have my MacBook Pro on *at home* and connected to the internet via ethernet to the Apple Time Capsule.. and then be able to somehow connect and log in to my MacBook Pro, either through another computer or preferably, my iPhone 5s..
Mostly just interested in having accessibility to be able to make downloads, such as magnet links, while away from the computer.. and basically be able to come home to mostly finished or complete downloads.. Basically like how you can DVR/TiVo things from your iPhone and have it sync with your DVR/TiVo while away from home..
Is this possible? Thank you!!

Yes you can do this.
I would suggest you start with TeamViewer.com (free for personal use).
You will need to install TeamViewer on your Mac AND your iPhone.
The Mac version will need to be configured for unattended remote access.  You should practice before you leave the home.
There are other iPhone apps that can remotely access a Mac.  A lot depends on whether they can get past the home NAT router.  Be careful of apps that provide VNC access, but do not provide a way to get past the home router.  If you try one of these, make sure you test it away from your home WiFi network.

  • Someone Remote Accessed my MacBook Pro. What do I do now?

About a month ago I was watching a movie on my laptop whilst in the bath (laptop on a chair by the side of the bath, obviously). Then I paused the full-screen playback, so I could rinse my hair (too much detail, you say),
I immediately noticed the cursor moving around. The person remote accessing it was trying to get off full-screen mode. They managed to do it, then located a file in a folder (I can't recall the names, but it looked like an application I didn't recognise).
I then chose to shutdown the computer as soon as possible. I did this by pressing and holding down the power button (in the top right corner of the laptop bottom part). I then went out into the street to see if any suspicious van was parked near by (or person was camped out in the woods behind my dwelling). I saw nothing suspicious. I asked the next door neighbour, and they said maybe one of their kids (under teenager age) had done it (I've not heard since if they asked their kids about it). I did this because there wasn't a password on the wireless router I was using at the time (there is now), so thought someone could have access my laptop via the unprotected wireless router.
I then set my laptop up to have a login password required (I used to, but got sick of having to enter it each time, so switch to auto login). I also turned on 'Firewall', which I'd turned off for some reason.
HELP: How do I know if this person can still 'see' or access my computer? How can I tell if they have stolen sensitive inform (e.g. I had all my passwords in a password-protected Keychain Access note; could they have 'seen' that if they viewed my screen when I had it open. A relate point is that this Keychain Access note was deleted when I updated to Mac OS 10.6.8, but I think this is an already-known issue, f*cking annoying though it is!). Moreover, can they see what I'm typing right now?!
Basically, what are the next steps I should take?

Do you have any other evidence of this "remote access" other than seeing the cursor move around?
Did you have Screen Sharing or Remote Login turned on?
The reason I'm asking these questions is that if you did not have Screen Sharing or Remote Login turned on, it is extremely unlikely that someone actually used your Mac remotely. In part, even if your wireless network did not have a password, they would have still had to guess your Mac account login password.
Note that even if you have "auto login" enabled, any remote user must still enter your exact login password to be able to enter Screen Sharing or Remote Login. Auto-login only applies to when you start up the Mac you're in front of.
That all leads to the other reason I'm asking. I have had consistent experience of operating my Mac when my fingers are wet. When my fingers are wet, trackpad response can become very erratic. It is very possible to lose control of the cursor, and the cursor can appear to move on its own, even after I take my hands off the computer. But what's really happening is that the trackpad is confused by the moisture on it. I know from having seen this numerous times, that if I have wet hands and I want my MacBook Pro trackpad to respond reliably, I must dry off my hands and allow the trackpad to dry. Until that happens, it's not going to work properly. I am wondering if you saw wet trackpad behavior but misinterpreted it as remote access.

  • Is it possible to remote-access my time-capsule to my home and downloads directly to it?

    Hello,
I have only Macbook Air and iPhone.
I was wondering if its possible I could remotely access my time-capsule at home while I'm away and send downloads to it,
Once I get back the downloads are finished.

Is it possible to block access to the TC external hard drive
I am guessing here, that you may mean access to the internal hard drive on the TC
Set up a disk password for the Time Capsule hard drive.....and only give it to those that you want to have access to the hard drive.
This is not a foolproof method.....there are none, actually.....but it will keep honest folks away.

  • I can't send emails remotely from my MacBook Pro - only from home.

I can't send emails from my MacBook Pro from anywhere but home. Suggestions??
    Thanks!
    KL

Typically that happens when your mail service provider is also your ISP, and you connect to it from another network. The SMTP server will allow connections without a password from anywhere, but it will only relay mail from within the ISP's network.
If you need to send mail from outside your ISP's network, use an independent mail service provider. I don't have a specific recommendation.

  • MacBook surfing away from home...!

    Hi everyone,
I have set my MacBook up and installed all of the necessary software and all is fine. Its now connected to the internet wirelessly and can now surf the net and send and receive emails through my NetGear broadband router.
I'm going away this weekend for a few days and will be taking the lap top with me.
One thing I'm confused about is how I connect to the internet in different locations? I'm not sure how to set this up on my MacBook? Can it be set to hook up automatically?
Any pointers would be most welcome.
    Best wishes,
    YZ

I wish that there was a easy answer to your questiion but unfortunately, there is not.
Weather you try a wired or wireless connection to get on a network, there may be password requirements that are not available or there may be fees involved that make it prohibitive to participate. There are areas and venues that supply free internet connectivity and with any luck, you should be able to connect. When you turn on your MacBook and it tries to connect to the internet, it will come up with a list of possible connections to try. You can also click the pie shaped icon in the upper right of your screen to view the available wireless networks.
I have solved this dilema by puchasing a Verizon USB720 Modem that dials out to their "broadband" service in most locations; basically anywhere I can get a signal to my cellphone. I am happy with that as an alternative to relying on someone elses connection.
    Good luck in your travels.

  • TS3297 Is it possible for itunes on my MacBook Pro to play songs off my networked WD external hard drive and sync to my iPhone? I prefer to not keep all my music on my laptop and I don't want to pay $25 a year to access my songs if I don't have to.

Is it possible for itunes on my MacBook Pro to play songs off my networked Western Drive external hard drive so I can sync to my Mac to my iPhone? I do not want to keep any music on my laptop and I don't want to pay $25 to itunes match a year to access my songs if I don't have to.

    Hi turingtest2,
Thank you for replying.  I've been looking at your posts about setting up iTunes using an external drive.  A bit of background info.  My old computer broke down, so I got a new one from work.  I've always kept my music files on my external drive (I have around 170GB of music).  I didn't follow the suggestions in the "migrate iTunes library" post because my old computer died on me.  However, I've looked at your posts about lay out of the iTunes folders.  Before connecting to iTunes on the new computer, I had reorganized my iTunes folder on my E: external drive, and created an iTunes folder which contains an iTunes Media subfolder.  The music files are in a Music folder, which is in the iTunes Media folder.  I've also put the following files in my iTunes folder: iTunes Library.itl, iTunes Library Extras.itdb, iTunes Library Genius.itdb, iTunes Music Library.xml, as well as sentinel.  I then followed the advice you gave bmw99 on 2 Nov 2013 at 9.58 (sorry, can't copy the exact answer).
Just to clarify:  I'd like to keep all my music media on the E: external hard drive (the computer hard drive is too small), and I'm aware i might never have my playlists back, and that all the songs in my library might be ticked.  However, I don't want my library to be duplicated.
I'm at work at the moment, but will be back home in about 10 hours, so I can be more specific about folders / files names.
I'm glad you picked up my message and greatly appreciate your help.
    Patrice

  • Is it possible to remotely access the desktop in OS9.1 from a newer G5 mac?

I have an old 7600 Powermac running OS9.1 and several peripherals on the SCSI bus. I would like to be able to access this machine and the peripherals via my newer G5 machine. So I'm wondering if its possible to remotely access the desktop on the OS9.1 machine with the existing software or do I need some type of network administrator software? Thx in advance!

Yes, there are several remote access apps in the app store.  LogMeIn, TeamViewer, and others.
Search the app store and find what works best for you.

    Hi,
System Preferences > Accounts > Your Account
Select current  Pic and chose to Change it.
You get an option to take a SnapShot.
Quicktime will also be able to access it and record using Quicktime  X in Snow Leopard.
Check the Menu items for New Recording.
MSN for Mac can use it (It depend on version and in some cases whether you are connected to the correct type of Windows server)
Yahoo (This is in Beta 3 and has been for years)
    Results can vary.
A Web Browser with the Flash Plug-in active can access the camera on certain Web Sites that run video Chat rooms
    See Koowy
(Type anything to Create a Room Name
On the New Page allow access to the camera in the Flash Pop Up - You may need to use the tabs to Select Camera type.
Send Buddy the URL of that page).

I gave my old MacBook Pro away and no longer have access to it. I didn't think to deauthorize it first. I DO NOT want it to have access to all music in my iCloud or any music that may have been downloaded sinceI gave away the computer. It now belongs to my teenage daughter, who has since been in my WI-FI area and knows that code. I had EVERYTHING removed from the computer before I gave it to her (long story), but since I hadn't deauthorized the Mac,I'm assuming even without the itunes password the iCloud material would had loaded onto her computer. My iCloud had somehow included personal voice mails under Unknown Artist that I did not want on there or shared. How can I deauthorize the Mac Laptop without having the machine available to do it on? Change the iTunes/iCloud password? I should now have my desktop computer, new PC (Aspire) laptop,Ipod Touch, and if possible my Evo 3D as well as my boyfriend's Samsung smartphone being able to access the iCloud account/library--whatever it is called. HELP

Thanks, I appreciate the help.  I think this is one of the problems Apple is creating by changing the OS so often. I had fomer colleagues at [a major aerospace contractor] who told me that so many original files were ultimately lost because of the deadly change in the "Save As" operation that they are now afraid of every OS update. Apple has badly damaged their support base with that very prominent company (they won't update now until they've fully examined and understand changes in the pre-conditioned nature of OS computer functions), and they are a whole lot less enthaled with Mac-related equipment/software. Can't blame them, I too used orginal files that way (as easy-to-use templates), and lost some important files before I realized what was happening (to late to revert). Companies should not have to retrain employees each time an OS gets an update, it's can be very expensive several different ways. They learned a painful lesson with that one. And because I'm now retired and don't use multiple devices, I need iCloud like I need a hole in the head... but I'm told there's no way to keep Apple out of my computer. Fortunately, because of major problems when initially installing Mountain Lion, one hold-over of the hardware/software damage I experienced was that iCloud can no longer access my computer even though everything else is working fine again. That was the only "good luck" I had as a result of that expensive nightmare.

  • Is there any possible way I can dual boot Windows with OSX 10.7.2 on a MacBook Pro 15' from 2006?

    Hello,
I am new to this forums.
I have searched about dual boot win/mac, but couldn't find a clear answer, so I decided to post this now.
I run a MacBook Pro 15' from 2006 (Intel based) and have upgraded it to OSX 10.7.2 Lion.
I have tried to install windows 7 on a small (20GB) partition by using Bootcamp, but then I've received a notice saying that there was no windows support software available. However, I did install Windows 7 Professional by unchecking that box. After the installation I have downloaded the windows support software and tried to install it but then I've received a notice saying that I can't install it on this machine.
Could you please give me any suggestions on how to dual boot win/mac, if it is possible at all using this machine? And how to safely go back to where I was before (with a single mac OSX 10.7.2 partition)?
    Thanks.

This problem has been solved as I just needed to download Boot Camp 4.
    Can I delete this post?

  • I need to access my MacBook Pro from Berlin with my MacAir book

    Hello and thank you advance
I need to access my MacBook Pro which is in London from Berlin with my MacAir Book.
I bought the app SERVER on recommendation from a One to One trainer but I am now told I need a Static IP and not a dynamic one. For me to change to a Static IP means going to a Business Account with BT and it is VERY expensive for my needs.   How can I access my laptop from Berlin please??? I live in London and have BT Infinity there.  The app Server does not indicate I need a Static IP when buying it. Do I need to buy something else?  dare I say that I could access my previous ..."windows" laptops without any problem?..... can anybody help me? I am an opera critic,NOT an expert... sorry......  Both Laptops run Yosemite and are about three years old.

You can't use the Mac OS X disc that came with another computer to upgrade another Mac because it's not supported. Buy Snow Leopard > http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard
You shouldn't lose data, but you must make a backup before

    I already checked that one.
I'm baffled, especially since it will usually give you the Invalid user name or password entered message. I'm not getting that. Instead the password field just jiggles back and forth. Very odd.
