Is it possible to restore from a G4 Powerbook to a new MacPro

I wish to upgrade to a MacPro or new MacBook.
The hard drive on my PowerBook G4 packed up a while ago. After replacing the hard drive I was able to add the whole system to the new Powerbook hard drive from an external hard drive I'd backed the original system to.
So, my question is does anyone know whether it is possible to transfer the whole system to a new MacBook or MacPro in the same way I was able to transfer my whole system in the way just outlined.
I ask this in case there is an issue with the new Intel Processors when trying to do this.
If anyone knows I'd be most grateful.
Regards,
Billy.

Is it possible? Of course it is. The thing is will the transfered OS be stable and free of erratic behavior?
That question has been answered by a few as NO. I tried it by transferring my Power Mac G5 system over to my Mac Pro.
It worked but I was experiencing some odd behavior. I would do as the Hatter says. Backup your drive (clone) it onto a new drive in your Mac Pro or onto an external drive. Just to pull things off of.
You can of course try it and let us know what happens.
I ended up doing a clean install on all my applications and I do not regret it...
Good luck!

is it possible to restore from a backup after initial setup on my iPad air?

You don't even have to do to an erase all content and settings.
Just connect the iPad to iTunes. Once it appears on the left, right click on it and select restore from backup. It's that easy.

  • I had Adobe Photoshop Elements 4.0 on old computer but find folder is now empty is it possible to restore from Adobe?

I had Adobe Photoshop Elements 4.0 on old computer & transferred to new computer - this file is now empty, so I must have deleted photos.   Is it possible to restore them?

Photoshop Elements 4 is too old. It was written for PowerPC Macs and will not work on new Intel Macs. There is nothing you can do about it.

  • Is it possible to restore from ext hard drive under these circumstances?

Please help. Due to circumstances beyond my control, I lost a lot of songs from my music library, is there a way to restore the songs from my external hard drive without losing the songs I've acquired since my backup? I have also upgraded itunes since my last backup. Is there hope?

The only songs you can restore from the external drive are the ones on it.
The iTunes update will not affect your ability to copy the songs
An external drive is not an iPod and copying songs from it back into iTunes will not erase any songs on the drive.
It would help if you told us what happened to your computer that's the only way we can tell if your music can be recovered.

  • Had to replace my 64gb.  When I go to restore from the old one to the new one it says the Ipod touch refused the request.  What do I do now?

How do I get my new ipod touch to restore from the one I had to replace.  It says the ipod refuses to allow the transfer and I have no idea what to do.  I have rebooted the computer and turned the touch on and off again.  Can someone please help me with this?  Just as a note the one I am replacing wouldn't sync and more and even though it had been plugged into the computer all night and the battery pictured said it was fully charged the battery symbol was not registering.  Thank you for any help you can give me.

See if placing the iPod in recovery mode will alow you to restore the iPod.  For recovery mode see:

  • How do I restore from old hard drive to a new iMac ?

The logic board in my mid 2008 iMac 24" has failed just 3 months out of AppleCare. To replace this will cost me HK$ 6500. I was going to buy a new mac anyway, just waiting for the next refresh model to come out.  So a new 27" i7 with highest spec and SSD and 2TB hard drive with AppleCare will cost me HK$ 24k. No brainer to just buy a new iMac rather than spend 25% of the cost to repair a 3+ year old iMac.
The hard drive is working ok so the repair centre said they will remove the hard drive for me and suggested I buy an enclosure for it , put the old drive in the enclosure and then transfer the program's, settings and files to the new IMac.
What is the best way to do this ?  I obviously cannot boot up the old drive. Can I connect this drive  to the new iMac and then use setup assistant to move settings and program's to the SSD on the new iMac , then use migration assistant to move the remainder of the files ( documents folder, iPhoto etc) to the hard drive on the new iMac ?
If not then any suggestions ?

Do as the repair center suggests and place the old drive in an enclosure then connect it to the new Mac.
When you first start new Mac run Setup Assistant and tell it to restore from the external drive.
It worked for me and should work for you.

  • Restore from Time Machine can't see new HD

I am upgrading my 250gb hard drive to a 320gb WD Scorpion (found here: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136280) so I took out the old hard drive, put in the new one, booted from the leopard install disc, and went to Utilities>Disk Utility. I can see the new drive, I partitioned it using Mac OS Extended (journaled), and called it Macintosh HD. Then I went to Utilities> Restore System from Backup... I selected my external drive with my time machine back ups, and picked the latest one. On the Select a Destination screen, it says "Searching for disks" but never finds my new drive that disc utility can clearly see, so I can not restore my system.
PLEASE HELP! Why is it not recognizing the drive?

    Hi jonmerlin
    Welcome to Apple Discussions
Sounds like you have formatted it correctly, but have not set it to the correct Partition Map Scheme.
While booted from your Install disc, open Disk Utility and select the drive in the left hand column. Then click on the Partition tab and then the Options button, there you'll see several choices. The first "GUID Partition Table" is for Intel-based iMac's or "Apple Partition Map" for PowerPC-based Mac's. Select the choice that is appropriate for the Mac you have, then click OK. You should now be able to format the drive as Mac Os Extended.
Then follow the instruction in the Restore from your Time Machine backups article:

  • During upgrade to Lion on Macbook Pro the upgrade stops at OS utilites after rebooting asking to restore from time machine backup or install new copy

My Daughter is currently upgrading her MacBook Pro to OS X Lion.  During the upgrade the system rebooted and then stops at the OS X Utilites menu.  I have installed this same upgrade on My MacBook Pro and the family iMAC without issue.  Did the upgrade encounter a problem?  The only options are to Restore from Time Machine Backup, Reinstall Mac OS X, Get help, or Disk Utility.
I'm not sure how recient the backup is on the TimeMachine for her system and she is concered that she may loose a lot of updates she has made to iTunes and iPhoto.
    Please help.

I have 8 GB of RAM, but would that even matter during install? Performance once installed and running sure, but I questiong whether the installer would demand that much more, or why it would affect mountain lion when restoring from a time machine backup.

  • REstoring from old time machine backups on new install

Hi, I've been looking for good documentation on this and haven't seen an answer yet.
I want to blow away and reinstall my OS (10.5.1) I made a full backup to my time machine disk and I had planned on reinstalling the OS and all my apps for a clean start, then when the time came to move my photos and itunes back just connect my time machine disk to the new installation and copy the data back. Once I was satisfied that everything I needed was restored from the time machine dist to the new install I would go ahead and re-enable time machine on the new install and blow away my old backups starting from scratch. Has anyone done this yet? I do not want to plug in the old time machine disk and not be able to access the data that was created by the old installation. I would be bitter to say the least. Before anyone suggests another means of backing up I have thought of that, but, I'd like to see if this works.
I understand the scenario of beginning an install and choosing to restore that way, but, the reason I'm reinstalling is to start with a fresh OS form scratch an be able to restore selectively.
Thanks for reading my wordy post, I look forward to hearing back!
    Thanks again

I think I'm facing the same issue as you. I ran Time Machine on my MBP. Now I've bought a new iMac. I started it with the Leopard CD and instead of installing Leopard on the new machine, I selected Restore from Time Machine Backup (or something like that). Everything from my old machine is now on my new machine. Sweet!
Only one problem. I've now enabled Time Machine on the new iMac and it tells me that there's not enough room on my external 320 GB drive for its first backup. It also tells me that its first backup will be 112 GB in size! This large size leads me to conclude that Time Machine will not add to the backups from the old MBP, but instead start a new series for the new iMac. To confirm this, I looked on the backup drive.
On the external backup drive, there are a series of 4 KB files, one for each machine that has previously been backed up. These names are nearly identical to the machine's MAC address (which you can find by open Network Preferences > Airport > Advanced). Time Machine will create a sparsebundle file for each machine backed up over the network; its name will have the format MachineNameMacAddresssparesebundle (Backups made when the backup drive was connected locally are saved in a folder called Backups.backupdb). So, to delete an old backup from a machine you're not using any more, you need to delete the 4 KB file containing the machine's MAC address, AND either the sparsebundle file OR the machine names' folder inside the Backups.backupdb folder.
    Hope this helps.

  • If i restore from my 4s backup on my new iphone 6 without installing ios8 on my 4s will it restore to ios 7?

Does anyone know if I don't update my iphone 4s to ios8 and then restore from its backup when my iphone 6 arrives if the iphone 6 will go back to ios7?  Therefore requiring me to update it to ios8?

From what I am reading, iPhone 6 will come with iOS8 preinstalled from yesterday. But contact the store you have ordered it from to be sure.

  • HT4137 i have purchase another family ipad do I restore from backup or setup as a new ipad

I have purchased another family iPad.  When I setup do I restore from the backup of our other iPad or set the new one up as a new iPad?

if you want all your apps and data on the new iPad from your old one, choose Restore from update. If don't want to and don't apps and your data on it, choose setup as new iPad.
If you choose Restore from backup:
You will be asked to restore backup from iCloud or from your iTunes library.
If you choose to restore it from iTunes library, connect it to your computer and open iTunes. Right click your iPad icon on devices lost and choose Restore. Choose the back up you want To restore it, and it should be restoring.
If you choose iCloud, you will be asked to sign in your iCloud account. Choose the backup you want, and it should be restoring.

  • Question about restoring from Time Machine backup because of new SSD

    Hi,
I have a 15" Late 2011 MacBook Pro running 10.10.1 with a Toshiba hard drive inside. I want to replace the Toshiba HDD with a Crucial MX100 SSD. I use a Time Capsule to backup. After I install the SSD, I would want to restore my data to the new SSD using my Time Capsule, but I have a few questions:
    1) My Mac shipped with OS X 10.7; My Mac is running OS X 10.10.1; Should I use Internet Recovery to start the restore (even though when I start OS X Internet Recovery it will download 10.7 recovery), or should I use a USB drive to start Recovery?
    2) After booting into Recovery, do I format/partition the SSD into 1 partition, GUID partition table, Mac OS Extended Journaled, etc before restoring using Time Capsule?
    3) Do I need to use Trim? Please tell me your opinion on the OS X Yosemite and Cindori Trim Enabler controversy.
    4) How do I install Recovery HD on my new SSD?
    5) Please tell me all tips you have about this entire process.
    Thanks,
    Mike

The ability to load OS X Internet Recovery is provided by firmware independent of the SSD. Just make sure your MBP has the latest firmware, which was released years ago.
You won't need a separate step to install OS X. Answered more completely in (2).
Merely format the SSD Use Mac OS X Extended (Journaled) and as many partitions as you desire. One is sufficient.
Only Crucial can answer that. You might be better off purchasing a SSD from a company known to support Macs, such as OWC / MacSales. I have several of their SSD products and haven't had to devote a moment of thought to Trim.
That's done by virtue of the Recovery firmware. It will recognize that no Recovery partition exists and will create one, after which you won't have to use OS X Internet Recovery (though it will remain an option).
If you obtain your SSD from OWC that's really all you need to know. Mechanically, it's not much more complicated than installing memory. As far as recovering the original HD's contents, restoring from the Time Machine backup is also straightforward. TM doesn't know and doesn't care that it's a SSD.

  • How do I restore from an external disk to my new computer?

I changed my PC, and took a copy of all photos to an external drive. Now, when I want to save them to my new PC, it does not succeed - next time I open my Elements, there is a ?-mark, and the program can't find the photo unless I connect the external drive again. How can I save all photos to my new PC?

What version of Premiere Elements are you using and on what computer operating system is it running. For now I will assume this involves a media reconnect in Premiere Elements and not the Elements Organizer.
When you import media into a Premiere Elements project, all you get in the project are copies of the originals that are at their hard drive save location. But, the project needs to trace back to the originals at the hard drive save location where they were when they were first imported into the project.
You should not have any problems when importing media from their current location when you open new projects.
How many saved closed projects do you have that were created before you switched the location of the source media of the project. (Remember, you will run into this problem if, after you save close the project, you move, delete, or rename its files/folders.) The "Where is the file....?" messages are good choices for the media reconnects, but... Let us know how many saved closed reopened projects are involved. Also, if the setup on the other computer still exists, it might be a consideration to archive the projects there and transfer the Copied Folder from the archive process to the new computer.
If instead this is a Photoshop Elements Elements Organizer based issue, please let us know.
    Thanks.
