Is it possible to retrieve files after they have been emptied from trash?
I have over relied on USB sticks to transfer / store files, and have experienced a catastrophic failure of one particular USB stick,
with info that took me months to prepare.  Any good news out there?

General File Recovery
If you stop using the drive it's possible to recover deleted files that have not been overwritten by using recovery software such as Data Rescue II, File Salvage or TechTool Pro.  Each of the preceding come on bootable CDs to enable usage without risk of writing more data to the hard drive.  Two free alternatives are Disk Drill and TestDisk.  Look for them and demos at MacUpdate or CNET Downloads. Recovery software usually provide trial versions that enable you to determine if the software would help before actually paying for it. Beyond this or if the drive has completely failed, then you would need to send the drive to a recovery service which is very expensive.
The longer the hard drive remains in use and data are written to it, the greater the risk your deleted files will be overwritten.

My wife recently emptied her email trash.  All emails were deleted, the Email icon shows a number of almost 4,000 emails.  Since trash is definately empty, how can this excessive and false number be removed?

  • Finding items in trash after it has been emptied

2 years ago when i bought my Mac I copied photos from my old PC to the Mac using a portable hard drive. I discarded the Pc and have used the Mac Happily ever since.
Today i discovered that all my photos dating back to before i got my Mac disappeared... They still show up in iPhoto, but when I click on them iPhot tells me it cannot find the original file...
I examined the iPhoto database and searched my hard drive and indeed it contains only thumbnails and instead of the original a thumbnail and an alias. The alias points to the original that was in my trash..
3 weeks ago I emptied my trash file for the first time. (it was 50G- I was surprised that it had never been emptied but it was taking up a lot of space) So it seems that several years of photos were deleted when I emptied the trash. It is of course bizarre that iPhoto was point to photos in the trash... (the path the alias indicates is Users/me/.Trash/ )
I have been making back-ups on 2 separate portable hard drives using Time Machine. But when I go into Time Machine I cannot locate the trash. An Internet search indicates that indeed TM des not back up Trash... is this true? I cannot go back to the folders before the photos ended up in the trash-most likely this happened before i ever installed time machine, back when I set up the Mac.
Is there anything I can do to get my pictures back? Are they still on my hard drive and is there a way to retrieve them even if trash has been emptied?

Well I hate to be the bearer of bad news however they're probably gone. About the only thing I can think of is a data recovery service however this will be extremely expensive.
This won't help on this situation but you may find it extremely useful in the future. That is doing redundant backups. Time Machine is great but has a limitation in that it can't boot your system and as you know won't backup what is in the Trash. However if you get a second external HD (don't use your TM DRIVE!!!!!!) in addition to TM you can create a bootable Clone using SuperDuper or Carbon Copy Cloner. These backups will clone your internal HD completely and will also be bootable in the event the internal HD crashes. Many of us use both backup tools for many reasons. In the event one backup fails for whatever reason in most cases you can fully recover. Had you had a Bootable Clone AND caught the issue soon enough you could have moved the photos that you have inadvertently placed in the trash back to your internal HD and you wouldn't have lost your pictures. There are many other scenarios where this can be helpful. For the cost of an internal HD (probably well under $100) you would have a solution.
    Best of luck,

  • Oracle.exe keeps locking a file after connection has been closed.

    Hi,
I've written a windows service in .net that monitors a directory for new uploaded files that need to be synchronized with the database. When it detects a new file it moves the file to a another directory from which oracle can reach the file. When the file is moved. I open a connection with the database that performs a select * ... on the external table which reads the file. This all works like a charm and afterwards i dispose of the connection.
Then i try to move the file again to another directory because it has been processed, but then i got an System.IO.IOException because the file is locked by a process. When i check by which process it is oracle.exe and the lock stays untill i terminate my service. When i debug the service i double checked and the connection state is closed before i try to move it again. For some reason oracle.exe locks the file untill i kill the service that opened the connection.
If i need to give more specific information please ask, any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Pieter

Do you see the same behavior is you select * from sqlplus instead of the odp app, but don't disconnect the sqlplus session?
ODP has pooling on by default, so even though you close and dispose the connection, the underlying hard connection stays open.
I dont know if there's a way to unlock the file without disconnecting which may be the ideal solution, but if not you could probably just disable connection pooling (set pooling=false in the connect string) to get around it.
    Hope it helps,
    Greg

  • Is it possible to retrieve files after migrating?

I have a new imac and uploaded a handful of photos to it before running the migration assistant.  I didnt realize the migration was going to replace everything and delete the photos I had just uploaded.  I'm afriad they are gone for good but wanted to ask and see if there is any magical way to retrieve them.

I did have timemachine set up for my old macbook but hadnt yet set it up for the new computer - I just uploaded a few (but wonderful) photos and now they're gone.  I think the migration asked me about merging the two and I didnt realize that would delete the info on the new mac.  When I log out, I only have the old user info - copied from my macbook.

  • Cannot delete in a file after it has been open 20 minutes

After I have a file open for about 20 minutes Delete stops working.  When I hit the key, illustrator appears to lock up for abou 30 seconds, but the feature doesn't delete.  I have to keep closing and reopening the file.  The file is only about 3.5MB in size.  Any ideas on how to improve this?

Yes, I was thinking of PS and AE at the time of writing this. However, AI has an option for setting this as well. If you open up the AIPrefs file in your user home directory (e.g. on Vista 64bit C:\Users\Mylenium\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Adobe Illustrator CS4 Settings\en_US), there is a pair of lines reading
    /maxUndoDepth 200
    /undoDepth 5
By editing the maxUndoDepth value, it may be possible to get a more memory friendly behavior on some systems.

  • Reloading a JAR file after it has been updated.

I am adding an Auto-upgrade feature to our Java application. Basically the application has 2 JAR files : the StartUp JAR file and the main application JAR file.
When the StartUp JAR file is run it checks whether there is a newer version of the main application JAR file on the server, and if so then retrieves it by deleting the old one and copying the new one across.
My problem is that when I've copied the new JAR file across an attempt to use the classes in it I get the Exception NoClassDefFoundError. It appears that the StartUp routine which access the main application JAR file has cached the old application JAR file and doesn't reference the new one. Therefore, when I delete the file it can no longer find the classes.
How do I get round this ? I have seen forums on using class loaders, but I want to reload the whole JAR file. Can this be done ? Or is there a simpler solution ?
    Thanks.
    Sarah.

    Hi.
    Try this:
    - Create a URLClassLoader giving the URL of the JAR file with the classes of your APP.
    - Make a loadClass using the URLClassLoader of the class that will start your app.
    - Use reflection or whatever to create an instance of the class and start the app.
    Here is some scratchy code:
    loader = new URLClassLoader(new URL[] {new File(jarfile).toURL()});
    Class theclass = loader.loadClass(classname);
Object obj = theclass.newInstance();Hope this helps,
    Nuno

  • Action: Remove original file after it has been closed

Hello. Is there any way to make Photoshop delete (or move to Recycle Bin, doesn't matter) a file in an Action?
Basically at the moment I manually open a picture, then I activate my Action which does a bunch of automated things, saves a .png copy, closes the file. I would like my Action to also remove the original file. Is it possible?
(I cannot use batch processing because the picture names do not follow a logical pattern, therefore I still wish to open the files myself.)
    Thank you.

I think this needs a Script.
Edit: But I doubt the wisdom of removing the original image and only keeping the edited data.

Excel on imac.  Have deleted/trashed workbooks from Finder and they have disappeared from the finder listing but the frozen icon remains on the Excel Workbook Gallery Under my Recent Workbooks.  Clicking on the empty icon which is still titled shows that they are in trash but I can't get rid of the icon which is a waste of space as well as annoying.  Help - Grandma is screaming!

Cannot retrieve file after I forgot to properly eject the USB it was on--what can I do to get this file to open?  Thanks for helping me out b/c it would take days to re-create this file!  IMAC 10.5.8 Excel File using .xls extension.

    Hi Sue,
Could be many things, we should start with this...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu at the top of the screen. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    5. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then Try a Repair on the External USB Drive.
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)

How do I store and retrieve a Word file after it's been converted to an PDF?  My file has been trapped in PDF"hell" assigned to a folder that cannot be opened or read, but when deleted, also deletes the original Word file...

I think we need some more info here like, how are you converting to PDF. This is the Reader forum and it doesn't convert files to PDF.

  • What do i do with my downloads in my downloads folder after software has been updated? do i move it to trash? or??

what do i do with my downloads in my downloads folder after software has been updated? do i move it to trash? or??

So it would be safe to just delete them? the reason why i ask is because for example  when i first stared using youtube on my macbook pro(OSX Lion) it required the flash update. I updated flash but the download still remained in the download file on the dock. So it would be safe to delete once it was updated correct?

  • Am I able to retrieve photos from an iPhone after it has been restored?

Is it possible to retrieve photos from an iPhone 5s after it has been restored? I had taken photos on my new iPhone 5s prior to restoring the previous settings and I never saved these photos. When I restored my phone from the old backup, my new photos were gone. I don't think they were saved to iCloud either.

Without a backup with the photos on it, you will not be able to recover them.

  • My biggest 'pain' at the moment is that every time I go to change then save a Photoshop CS3 file it says 'cannot save as the file as it has been left open or is in use by another application'

My biggest 'pain' at the moment is that every time I go to change then save a Photoshop CS3 file it says 'cannot save as the file as it has been left open or is in use by another application'

Rule Number One - NEVER go directly uinto the iPhoto library - there are no user servicable parts in it and making any change no matter how small can corrupt your library and cause data or photo loss
Exactly how were you trying to save a copy of your iPhoto library?
Albumdata.xml does not contain your photos - and again NEVER make any changes to the content of the iPhoto library - no dragging - no changes - never go into the library
We need to know exactly what you did
And probalby the easiest solution is to load your backup from before you messed things up
For reference after you get things working
Moving the iPhoto library is safe and simple - quit iPhoto and drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity to the external drive - depress the option key and launch iPhoto using the "select library" option to point to the new location on the external drive - fully test it and then trash the old library on the internal drive (test one more time prior to emptying the trash)
And be sure that the External drive is formatted Mac OS extended (journaled) (iPhoto does not work with drives with other formats) and that it is always available prior to launching iPhoto
And backup soon and often - having your iPhoto library on an external drive is not a backup and if you are using Time Machine you need to check and be sure that TM is backing up your external drive
