Is it possible to retrieve old backups that were made before itunes 9.2 ?

Hi all,
There were previous backups on my PC that were made from my iphone 3gs.
When it upgraded the itunes software to 9.2 and IOS4, it seemed to remove all of the older backups ???? i presume this is to stop going back to older firmware etc ?
Problem is though that since the IOS4 upgrade i have lost all of my contacts (didnt use mobileme or gmail or outlook etc) and the only way to get them back is to extract my contacts from a backup done previous to the IOS4 upgrade.(which have all been removed from the list of available backups)
Question is - are the old backups from itunes still stored somewhere on my PC ? i have a program that can extract my old contacts from a good backup file if i can find one...
Useless upgrade IMO that should be removed immediately until a fix is done as lots of people are still losing their contacts as we speak......

iTunes only ever kept one back up at a time. Every sync it gets replaced unless you back the backup files off yourself.

Where can I find the purchases that were made from itunes and apps?

You can view the full purchase history on your account via your computer's iTunes : log into your account on your computer's iTunes via the Store > View Account menu option, you should then see a Purchase History section with a 'see all' link to the right of it. Click on that and you should then see a list of your purchases.
On an iOS device you can only view the last 90 days purchases (and optionally contact iTunes Support if you have a problem with one of them) via http://reportaproblem.apple.com

  • Is it possible to retrieve a backup that is not available on the drop-down bar in iTunes "restore from backup"?

I was attempting to sync my phone so that I could get all of my pictures on the computer to free up some space on my phone. I have done this several times before with no problems. An error message popped up informing me that I needed to update my phone before I could sync my info. During the update, an error occured again so I tried to eject the device so that I could worry about it another day. After ejecting the phone, it kept showing on the display that it was still connected to itunes. I couldnt turn the phone off or anything, it was just frozen there. So, I hooked it back up to the computer and it prompted me to do an update on itunes to fix the problem. After updating itunes it said that i should restore the phone to it's original settings and then restore from backup. It performed a backup when I initially plugged the phone in the first time. After deleting everything off of my phone, I then attempted to restore from backup but got an error message saying that there was not enough free space on my device for me to restore my info...but I had just taken it off the phone. I stepped away from the computer for a moment and when I got back, it had performed another backup of my basically blank device. Now the only backups that I can pull up on itunes are from after everything was deleted from my phone. All of my information is gone. I know this doesn't really make any sense, but I have no idea how else to word it or how to fix it. PLEASE help! I have several pictures of my newborn son and pictures and videos of my husband's recovery process from a severe brain injury.

  • Siri cannot make phone calls that were made before

When starting out Siri worked fine in dialing up contacts.  Now, for some reason, cannot connect.  Recognizes the contacts -- but says she cannot connect.  I don't get it.

This is a problem of Siri not being able to connect to the Apple server to interpret what you've said. Essentially, everything you tell Siri is sent to Apple servers, which then replies to the phone with the command. If Siri says: "Sorry, I'm having trouble connecting..." it's not that she's having trouble connecting your call it's that she's having trouble connecting to Apple to know what you have asked it to do.
This will happen occasionally, especially on 3G (at least, that's what I've found).  Just give it a second and try again or dial your call directly.

  • Can I move old Time Machine backups that were USB to Network backups?

I recently bought a new Airport Extreme and attached my 1TB WD HD to it for network file sharing and Time Machine backups. I had originally backed up my MacBook Pro with that external HD via USB directly connected to the laptop. I know (thanks to these foruns), that, since I'm now using Time Machine backups via wifi, the location of the backups is different and my wifi Time Machine can't access the backups on the HD that were made when it was directly connected.
My question is: is there a way to move the old TM backups so that they can be recognized via wifi? If not no big deal, but then I would need to delete those backups, since they are taking up a big chunk of the external HD space. I saw a few forum posts about deleting TM backups and it seems that I would have to do it via TM itself...does that mean I have to reconnect the HD via USB to run TM so I can access those backups to delete them?
Finally, once I do get to delete the old backups (or move them, if possible), is it safe to repartition the external HD so there is one partition for TM and one for storing files via my network? I've read about using Disk Utility to do this, but I haven't tried it yet.
    Thanks for any input.

No, what you're doing is splitting the TM partition in half, so this will only work if you have more that 50% free space.
See: Disk Utility - Add, Delete, and Resize Existing Volumes With Disk Utility
My only concern about that would be that my other files would be on the same partition as the 'old' TM and thus I wouldn't want to delete it, which brings me back to my original issue of space being taken up on the drive.
You should consider putting those files on their own partition, so think about spliiting the disk into 3 or more partitons, and 1st move all of your other files to the 3rd (last) partition.  You just need to decide how much space to allocate.
With some limitations, you can do a lot with Partitoning without losing data, see: Disk Utility - What You Need to Know About Modifying Existing Volumes

Could someone please tell me if it is possible to retrieve text messages that I have permanently deleted?

SMS's are included in the iPhone backup, thus restoring from backup will restore your SMS's, assuming you backed up your phone with the SMS's in question still on your phone. If not part of your iPhone backup, they are gone.

  • While intending to perform a clean install of Mountain Lion while continuing with old apps and files, is it a waste to restore a backup that was made while running Mountain Lion as an UPgrade from Lion?

While intending to perform a clean install of Mountain Lion while continuing with old apps and files, is it a waste to restore a backup that was made while running Mountain Lion as an UPgrade from Lion?
Originally I was running Mountain Lion as an UPgrade from Lion. I created a backup in Time Machine, performed a clean install of Mountain Lion, then I proceeded to use Time Machine to restore the back up.
When thinking about the essence of a back up restore, it occurrs to me that for all I know, I may have just wated my time IF Time Machine also restores all the old unneeded files that remain from Lion after an upgrade.
Since the backup was made while running Mountain Lion as an upgrade from Lion, did restoring this backup defeat the purpose of a clean install by reinstalling old Lion files?
If so, how can I re-do the last portion of the process so that I get all my home-folder files and apps back without the full bulk of old Lion files? Migration assistant I'm guessing?

    Hello John!
Thank you for your response which solved my problem. For other users who may stumble upon this, I'll clear up the confusion and share how I solved the problem with your help; When looking for answers to my computer problems, finding unresolved questions where person B offers a solution and person A never comes back and says "That worked, thank you.", it demonstrates a "k-thnx-bye" user mentality that leaves others with the same problem lost. Without further ado:
It is not clear what you did because the meaning of "clean install" is vague. You can erase a volume and install an OS which leaves none of its previous content intact,
This is what I did: I erased the volume leaving no previous content intact, while then installing OS X Mountain Lion.
or you can upgrade an existing OS (or reinstall the same one) which does not alter your user - installed files.
An upgrade to Mountain Lion from Lion is what I started with initially before erasing anything. This was undesirable. Since this can cause Macs to run slower (especially whereas I'm using a mid-2011 Mac Mini), my goal was to go from operating within an upgrade to Mountain Lion, to operating within an installation of Montain Lion that was not preceded by any other oprating system.
Hence a "clean install of Mountain Lion while continuing with old apps and files" is confusing.
Well put and understood. What I should have said was:
    1.Erase the volume
    2.Install Mountain Lion clean
3.Confirm that Mountain Lion is functioning properly
4.Proceed to use either Time Machine or Migration Assistant to Import/Migrate/Copy over only two things; My old apps (That had been stored originally in the designated Applications folder) and all files and folders originally stored in the home folder under users.
If you restore from a Time Machine backup then all modifications that occurred subsequent to that backup become erased. It renders moot any OS X upgrade performed subsequent to that backup.
That makes sense and is just as I later suspected.
If so, how can I re-do the last portion of the process so that I get all my home-folder files and apps back without the full bulk of old Lion files? Migration assistant I'm guessing?
    Yes.
This is what I did and everything works perfectly. Thank you so much once again!
    -Chris

  • Is it possible to retrieve phone numbers from previous iPhones through iTunes ?

Is it possible to retrieve phone numbers from previous iPhones through iTunes ?

iTunes does not backup any contact information.  Contact information is sync'd with your contacts program on your computer.  On a Mac, that would be the Contacts program, which iTunes will sync the content with between your iPhone and the computer.  On a Windows PC, people often use outlook, and their contacts are sync'd with its contacts.
You can also sync contacts with iCloud.
Do you still have the previous iPhones?  If so, just sync them with whatever contacts program you use on your computer, then sync those to the new iPhone.

  • HT5043 So I was a little skeptical about deleting photos from my iPhone but I did. Shouldn't I be able to access them on iCloud? Because I can't find a way to view all my old photos that were backed up before I deleted them.

No you can not access yoru photos on iCloud
PhotoStream is a way to share photos between devices - it is not a way to backup photos or to view photos

  • HT1766 can I restore an icloud backup that i made months ago?

Hi Guys, I am looking for a whatsapp chat history that I had on my phone about 3 months ago.  My iPhone 4S was being backed up to iCloud then, so I am wondering if I can view or restore this backup that I made on iCloud to see the history.  When I restore my iPhone, it only shows the last 3 most recent backups from a couple of days ago.
    Thanks,
    Lola HK

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
When you create an iCloud backup, in most of the cases, the old one is overwritten and iCloud keeps the three latest backups, so the old ones were overwritten or deleted

  • Hi, is there a possibility a text message /SMS) that was deleted before a long time to restore

Hi, is there a possibility a text message /SMS) that was deleted before a long time to restore

It can be restored only if you have an iTunes or iCloud backup that contains the message. If not it is gone.
