Is it possible to return an operating system?

I bought Mountain lion because I thought I needed it in order to update to Mavericks but it turned out I didn't need it after all. I have the code Apple emailed me, but I haven't used it or anything

Generally there are no refunds for software; however, you can try to contact Apple and ask - they may or may not make an exception.

• Is it possible to run an operating system from an external hard drive?

Really weird question here, but I've always wanted to know this. I have a MBP 13" mid-2012 and I installed a 256GB SSD. I currently have OSX 10.9 and Windows 8.1 installed on the drive, but is it possible to actually run an operating system from an external hard drive. I don't want to install anymore operating systems onto the internal SSD because I don't want to run out of space. So, I'm wondering can I install Linux on an external hard drive, the same way I would on an internal hard drive and just plug it in via USB 3 or Thunderbolt? Is it actually possible to use a computer this way? I know I can boot from a usb stick, so is it possible to actually use a computer with an operating system installed in an external hard drive?

windows don't support being installed on usb mass storage installs like usb

• Hi I bought a macbook in 2007/2008 and am wondering if it is possible to update the operating system? Here are my system details: Hardware Overview: Model Name: MacBook Model Identifier: MacBook4,1 Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo Pro

Hi, I bought a Macbook in 2007/2008 and am wondering if it is possible to update my system so I can get the new version of iTunes?
Here are my current system details: Mac OsX Version 10.5.8
Hardware Overview:
Model Name: MacBook
Model Identifier: MacBook4,1
Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo
Processor Speed: 2.4 GHz
Number Of Processors: 1
Total Number Of Cores: 2
L2 Cache: 3 MB
Memory: 2 GB
Bus Speed: 800 MHz
Boot ROM Version: MB41.00C1.B00
SMC Version (system): 1.31f1

The model 4,1 can run a maximum of 10.7 Lion. The 10.6 Snow Leopard DVD is in the Apple online store. You can get it for $19.99. After you’ve installed that then download the 10.6.8 combo updater to finish it off. http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1399 You will need to be running 10.6.8 to access the App Store to order Lion. http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard
System Requirements for 10.6:
Mac computer with an Intel processor
1GB of memory
5GB of available disk space
DVD drive for installation
Some features require a compatible internet service provider: fees may apply.
You can upgrade from 10.5 to 10.6 with no problems as long as you have at least 1gb of RAM. Any program that runs under 10.5 should run under10.6. See this list for third party programs compatibility with 10.6: http://snowleopard.wikidot.com/ You might have to upgrade some drivers for printers, etc.... And you will have to install Rosetta if you have any Power PC applications
http://www.macobserver.com/tmo/article/snow_leopard_installing_rosetta/
Once you are at 10.6.8 Lion is still available from Apple. You will have to call Apple Customer Care 1-800-692-7753 or 1-800-676-2775. to purchase it. Then within 3 days you will get an email with a code which you can use to download Lion from the App Store. Or go to http://store.apple.com/us/product/D6106Z/A/os-x-lion and purchase it there. The price is $19.99.
Lion will require at least 2gb of RAM but really needs 4gb to run smoothly.
As for third party programs see this list for compatibility with 10.7 http://roaringapps.com/apps:table
Also Lion doesn't run any Power PC programs. To see if you have any Power PC programs go to the Apple in the upper left corner and select About This Mac, then click on More Info. When System Profiler comes up select Applications under Software. Then look under Kind to see if any of your applications are listed as Power PC. Universal and Intel will run under Lion.
Before Mac switched to Intel processors in 2006 they used Power PC processors from 1994 to 2005. Power PC 601 through 604, G3, G4 and G5. Applications written for the Power PC processors need the application called Rosetta to run on Intel processors. This was part of the Operating System in 10.4 and 10.5 but was an optional install in 10.6. With 10.7 Lion Apple dropped all support for Power PC applications.

• Is it possible to write an operating system in java?

Our highschool requires us to do a senior project to graduate. It has to be something you want to do as a career. I want to be a programmer so I thought it would be cool if I wrote an operating system. I really don't know where to start though, I thought you couldn't write an operating system in a high-level language at first but then I heard differently. I can see why you'd have to use assembly or someting to write one because it has to be in bionary but i guess that is not true. So is it possible to use java to write an operating system or is that just not possible? I'm only a sophmore right now so i have two years to figure it out but i'd like to get an idea now.
thanks, lateralus

it's not going to have a gui or anything like that,
it's just going to be something similar to DOS. It
really doesn't have to do much. I just like the
challenge, also I heard someone else in my school had
done it and they use java. You sure that you don't just want to write a command shell?
When you open a console window on windows that is a command shell, not an OS.
And writing one of those would be a lot easier than writing an OS.
I suppose you could write a very primitive pseudo OS using the Sun VM. However I am not sure that you would really be able to demonstrate the concepts of an OS except in a very complicated way. For example if you had the following 'OS' commands
1. Store file
2. Print file
Then you could implement it in the following way
- Create a big binary file managed via java
- Storing a file means 'managing' a hunk of that binary file and 'mapping' the file into that space.
- Printing the file would mean
....a Get map to access file (so find it in binary file.)
....b. Read contents (read bytes from binary file)
....c. Print contents to JFrame (or GUI thing)
If the above seems confusing then unless you have a teacher that is either willing to be very free with what a success is or a teacher that understands the concepts very well then going with a command shell would be much better.

• Is it possible to have two operating systems?

Can I install Snow Leopard while still having Lion on my Macbook Pro?
I have some software that will only run on Snow Leopard but my mac came with Lion. I have a Snow Leopard install disc so was wondering if I could run both operating systems...

captfred wrote:
No. Your MBpro late 2011 was delivered with Lion 10.7.2 (11C74) .
It won't run Snow Leopard.
Sorry, I must have spaced that out. It is entirely correct.
It is best to ensure that all software that you require will run on your new machine before puchasing it. If you depend on software that was abandonned by its authors in 2006 or earlier, then you can't upgrade - ever. I suggest finding a replacement for that software.

• Is it possible to return an operator-type from a function/decode ?

Hi ,
I have a query that is calling a decode and based on the operator type (i.e <> , >= , <= etc ..) that it returns to compare 2 fields of a table
is this possible and if so could anyone advise me how to ?
below is my current declaration that gives invalid relational operator error
SELECT 1 into TmpCnt FROM Tbl1a where
a.id = ID and a.part = PART and a.parmn = TESTNAME
and a.paval DECODE(TESTCONDITION , 'LT' , '<' ,
'LE' , '<=' ,
'EQ' , '=' ,
'GE' , '>=' ,
'GT' , '>' ,
'NE' , '<>' ) TPARAMVALUE ';
tks & rdgs

You can't replace an operator with an expression.
For a limited number of operators you may be able to code this explicitly, something like...
SELECT 1
FROM tbl1a
WHERE a.ID = ID
AND a.part = part
AND a.parmn = testname
AND DECODE (testcondition,
'LT', CASE WHEN a.paval <= tparamvalue THEN 'Y' END,
'LE', CASE WHEN a.paval = tparamvalue THEN 'Y' END,
'EQ', CASE WHEN a.paval >= tparamvalue THEN 'Y' END,
'GE', CASE WHEN a.paval >= tparamvalue THEN 'Y' END,
'GT', CASE WHEN a.paval > tparamvalue THEN 'Y' END,
'NE', CASE WHEN a.paval != tparamvalue THEN 'Y' END) = 'Y'Otherwise you are looking at Dynamic SQL.

• How do I reinstall my operating system and keep my data?

I recently installed a new time capsule and created a network. I have a three year old iMac (early 2009) on this network and a Mac Book Pro (late 2011). In addition, I backed up iTunes and iPhoto libraries to an external drive, with the intention of erasing them from my internal HD, just before installing the time capsule.
Since making this change there have been a number of problems with the iMac. It freezes up frequently, and also opens and closes programs at will. For example, it reopens already closed windows on its own. Speakers shut themselves on and off. The mouse disappears. Going full screen with a movie enlarges the screen, but the moviie appears the same size in one corner. There are "flashes" of windows which open and close at lightening speed. All these problems are intermittent, but started within the past two weeks, after intalling time capsule. Most recently, I received an error message where a grey screen came over my open window and told me I had to restart my computer immediately.
iTunes also had a problem with launching itself over and over. I did a bit of searching the web and resolved it the following manner. It seems to have worked.
While ITunes was open I opened Terminal and typed: killall iTunes
This seems to have worked, but I include the information here to expound on the problems I've been having.
I have my system backed up to the time capsule, using time machine, and the above mentioned libraries are on a seperate hard drive. But is it possible to reinstall the operating system without losing documents and other personal stuff on my iMac? Is reinstalling the recommended fix for all this instability?
In addition to the above, my Mac Book Pro has also been running slower, with lots of pinwheels, since the network setup.
Thanks in advance for your help with this problem.

• Run Operating System Commands

Hi,
There is an urgent requirement, i want to know about Run Operating System Commands in file adapter. What are all possible commands for windows operating system? and how it works? Kindly send me your suggestions and links at the earliest.
Your help will be appreciated.
Thanks,
Sadhna.

Hi,
Run Operating System Command Before/After Message Processing
● Command Line
An operating system command specified here is executed before or after the message processing of a file that was found in a run. The default value is an empty character string (no command).
When the operating system command is called, the file name currently being processed can be specified with the following placeholders:
● %f (file name)
● %F(absolute file name including path)
● Timeout (secs)
This specifies the maximum runtime of the executing program in seconds. When this time interval is exceeded, the adapter continues processing. The executing program continues to run in the background.
● Terminate Program After Timeout
Set this indicator if the adapter is to terminate the executing program when the timeout is exceeded.
The adapter writes the output (STDOUT and STDERR) for the operating system command in the system trace.

• Role of S Partition in Installing New Operating System

Hello,
I've been taking a look on here and understand that the Q partition is for the backup to factory settings and the S partition is part of the start up system (working with a 2009 T400). I am looking to install Windows 7 and have no interest in keeping my XP system recoverable.
Therefore I can delete the Q partition but is there anything special I have to do in regards to the S partition? Or is it a plug and play situation once I put in the Win7 disk?
Essentially
-Can I delete the S: drive?
-If it remains partitioned, will it need to change in some way with the new OS?
-During Win7 set up which partition do I select to install on?
Solved!
Go to Solution.

Hello and welcome,
Since you don't intend to save anything let the Win 7 installer use the whole drive. It will partition appropriately.
(IIRC) When you get to the partitioning part of the install select advanced disk options and delete all the partitions. Then just let the install continue from there.
Z.

• Rescue and Recovery Capability to recover other operating systems

Hello Folks,
I have a question regarding R&R. I have a thinkpad T520 running windows 7. It came with a 500GB hdd and I allocated 50GB of that to a Linux system. I bought a 1 TB HDD and would like to replace the one inside, and this brings me to my question;
*Does the R&R tool take a complete image of my hdd, meaning if I was to recover my backup to a new hdd, would I be able to access my Linux installation and all the files in that partition as well, or is it specific to the windows system only.
*If the above is indeed not possible, is there a way to change my settings on R&R to do it or do I have to resort to another paid 3rd party software to do that for me.
Please help as I can't afford to lose anything on the Linux system as I need it for research.
Thanks in advance,
Solomon

Hello and welcome,
I can't answer directly so apologies for crashing your thread. I'd be very surprised if R&R recognized anything but windows-flavored partitions. I don't have one of my old multi-boot ThinkPads at hand to test or I would.
IIRC backup is one of the reasons I finally gave up on multi-boot and went to a pure Windows setup running Linux and Solaris as virtual machines. It makes for a very simple backup process.
Having said that, I actually use Acronis for backup. It can handle multi-OS backups but in my experience I always had to repair the Linux partition after a restore.
Is the virtual machine approach something that would work for you? If not you might use one of the Linux backup approaches to save that partition separately.
Regards,
Z.

• HT4972 Updating IPad operating system

I have an early IPad (version 3.2.1 (7B405) model MB292LL), is it possible to update the operating system to IOS?

The iPad 1 can be upgraded to 5.1.1.
If your iDevice is using a version of iOS lower than 5, you will need to use iTunes on your syncing computer to perform the upgrade. Use the Apple link below as a guide for the upgrade.

• Two operating systems with mountain lion

Is it possible to install two operating systems on a mac running OS X Mountain Lion?
I would like to setup Snow Leopard and keep Mountain Lion on seperate partitions.
Can this work?

As long as your Mac shipped with SL or less you can do it. You'll need to put SL on another drive or partition your existing hard drive. I prefer a seperate drive. Then when you need SL just boot from your SL drive.

• ERROR CODE 1962 - NO OPERATING SYSTEM FOUND

My B540 continues to experience intermittent problems with Error Code 1962-No Operating System Found. Sometimes the computer will run correctly for 3 or 4 days, other times for just an hour, but in the end it repeatedly locks up and will not reboot. If I check the Bios Setup immediately after this happens, it says that there is no HDD. However, if I wait for an hour or two with the computer off, it will boot.
1. The logical explanation is that the HDD is faulty, but that is not so in this case. In addition to the HDD that came with the computer, I have tried two other HDDs, both brand new, never used, and both with fresh Win 7 installs. Both of those ended up with the same Error Code 1962. There is no way that all three HDDs could be defective.
2. I removed and reseated the memory.
3. I ran extensive diagnostic tests on the memory; it tests OK.
4. Someone suggested plugging the HDD SATA cable into a different SATA connection, but the B540 only has two connections (one for the HDD, one for the optical drive). I swapped those two, but still got the error code.
I have to believe that the problem is with the motherboard. I have noticed on the forum that other people are experiencing the same 1962 error code; has anyone found a working solution?
Thanks!

Ah, bummer. Thought maybe I was onto something...

• TS130 ERROR CODE 1962 - NO OPERATING SYSTEM FOUND

Lenovo TS130 Ubuntu Server 14.04 Error 1962: This error occurred during the installation of Ubuntu Server on a hard drive that was completely deleted and then re-partioned using "use entire disk" option in the installation menu: No operating system would start regardless of the BIOS settings such as UEFI, legacy, auto; quickboot; etc.
The solution was to update the BIOS to the latest version from the Lenovo website and then enable the new securboot feature in the BIOS menu.
For the TS130, this was accomplished by burning the BIOS update on a CD after downloading for the system from the Lenovo website and then updating the server via the CD and on-screen prompts.
The optimize BIOS defaults was selected from the Exit menu in the BIOS settings to set everything back to original before the update was run.
Then the CD drive was moved upwards above the hard drive under primary in the boot menu to run the BIOS Update CD at boot.
Afterwards, there will be additional options in the BIOS menu which is where the solution lies. There is a new option below the "load optimal defaults" which is new from the BIOS update and named optimize operating system defaults. Selecting this will bring up prompts asking about enabling securboot and such but if everything is enabled, the system started Ubuntu Server 14.04 without issues.
