Is it possible to rip dvds to my mac to play on my iPad?

I'd like to watch my dvds on my ipad while I'm on an airplane.  Suggestions?

Most commercial DVDs are encrypted. In the U.S, breaking that encryption is illegal. It therefore contravenes the Terms of Use of these forums to discuss methods of breaking that encryption.
Handbrake is a great video conversion program but, on it's own, it won't rip encrypted DVDs.

  • How do you convert PC-ripped DVDs using a Mac?

Got a question about converting/burning video DVDs from PC to Mac.
So I acquired a rip of a Video DVD, which seems to be PC-made, as the original rip was made up of numerous RAR files (pls-amipys.r00, pls-amipys.r01, etc).
I used a program (UnRarX I think) to convert these to a standard .iso disc, with a VIDEO_TS folder that seemed to play just fine using DVD Player program. I then tried burning that folder to a playable DVD (using the Freeware program Liquid CD; Toast seems to be freezing up on me/not doing so for some reason...).
However, when I tried playing the burned disc in my DVD player, every chapter was jumping/skipping, like someone was using the DVD as a **** turntable (please, no hip-hop references...).
Anyway I've never had this problem with any other .isos/VIDEO_TS folders I've tried burning to DVD, so I know it's got to be an issue with my having had to convert it.
Any (serious) explanations for why this may be?? Any suggestions for any other programs I can use to convert/burn the original rip so it'll play properly?
    Thank you!!

  • Move video dvd+menu to Mac to play it?

I have video dvd which I wish to move to my MacBook and so I can play it everywhere; of course I want to keep the interactive menu.
If I made dvd image I have to decompress image when I want to play file?!?
What tool and how to convert this dvd?

You are forgetting what I wrote: I want to keep the interactive menu.
My scope is to preserve a file copy of my dvd because this media is not eternal, I'm sure there is no protect otherwise I would not have published this article.
Handbrake doesn't keep menu structure during conversion process, but I think any ripping software is not able to do it so I thought a kind of image disk to play which keeps compression format with menu.
    Some can help me?

J and R is a very reputable retailer here in the NYC metro area, not some shady web seller. However, I would suggest you call to check if the item is in stock before placing the order. Seems as though there is a shortage on these cables.
FYI, a friend of mine was looking for one for about a month until I gave him a cable that came with my Panasonic minidv camcorder (DV203). Worked fine.

  • How can I play a dvd on my Mac and display it through Apple TV

I want to use my DVD drive on my mac to play back movies through my apple tv2. I notice that on my iPad, iPhone, iTunes on my computer all have the AirPlay option to display the video on my TV through Apple TV. I do not want to burn my DVD onto my Mac and play through iTunes becasue its a hassle.

One thing you can do is to play the DVD in your Mac using DVD Player instead of iTunes, and then, turn on AirPlay Mirroring to stream your computer's display to your Apple TV > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5404
If your Mac isn't compatible with AirPlay Mirroring, use a third-party app like AirParrot > http://www.airparrot.com This is the only option, because the Apple TV isn't compatible with discs
Logical but it won't work - DVD player output will be a grey checkerboard pattern.
Apple apps prevent Airplay of DVD content at low level presumably for some copy protection reason.
VLC player is believed to work.

  • Is't possible to get dvd subtitles into finalcut?

    Hi
Im wondering if it's possible to rip subtitles from a dvd and to import them to Final cut? Would be really glad if somebody could help me to find a solution to this, would save me alot of time if i dont have to write and sync all de subtitles again for my shortfilm.
    thanks

I doubt this is possible. The opposite (exporting subtitles from FCP directly into Studio Pro) isn't.

  • Hi, im tinkering with mpeg streamclip and its giving me problems because it won't open my ripped dvd files from my desktop. It keeps giving me the same message "no VOB files can be found". Can anyone help me, this doesn't make sense.

hi, im tinkering with mpeg streamclip and its giving me problems because it won't open my ripped dvd files from my desktop. It keeps giving me the same message "no VOB files can be found". Can anyone help me, this doesn't make sense. I also found online that you need Apple Mpeg-2 playback component in order to use mpeg streamclip. Even though I have OS X Lion, should I download the add-on?

You need to convert the VOB files in the TS-Folder of the DVD back to DV which iMovie is designed to handle. For that you need mpegStreamclip:
    http://www.squared5.com/svideo/mpeg-streamclip-mac.html
which is free, but you must also have the  Apple mpeg2 plugin :
    http://www.apple.com/quicktime/mpeg2/
(unless you are running Lion in which case see below))
    which is a mere $20.
Another possibility is to use DVDxDV:
    http://www.dvdxdv.com/NewFolderLookSite/Products/DVDxDV.overview.htm
    which costs $25.
For the benefit of others who may read this thread:
Obviously the foregoing only applies to DVDs you have made yourself, or other home-made DVDs that have been given to you. It will NOT work on copy-protected commercial DVDs, which in any case would be illegal.
And from the TOU of these forums:

Do not submit software or descriptions of processes that break or otherwise ‘work around’ digital rights management software or hardware. This includes conversations about ‘ripping’ DVDs or working around FairPlay software used on the iTunes Store.
    If you are running Lion:
    From the MPEG Streamclip homepage
The installer of the MPEG-2 Playback Component may refuse to install the component in Lion. Apple states the component is unnecessary in Lion, however MPEG Streamclip still needs it.
To install the component in Lion, please download MPEG Streamclip 1.9.3b7 beta above; inside the disk image you will find the Utility MPEG2 Component Lion: use it to install the MPEG-2 Playback Component in Lion. The original installer's disk image (QuickTimeMPEG2.dmg) is required.
The current versions of MPEG Streamclip cannot take advantage of the built-in MPEG-2 functionality of Lion. For MPEG-2 files you still need to install the QuickTime MPEG-2 Playback Component, which is not preinstalled in Lion. You don't have to install QuickTime 7.

  • Ripping DVD-A:  How?

    Hi All,
I recently downloaded a live recording of a show that was 24bit 96khz and it's pretty amazing. I'm intrigued about the possibility of upgrading some of my collection by ripping DVD-A to ALAC but I can't for the life of me figure out how to do it. Any helpful suggestions or better yet methodologies?
    Thanks!
    Jack

    Chris is absolutely right.
It is a strange situation that applies to almost every country which has signed up to the TRIPS agreement. That agreement allows, at the discretion of the implementing country, the right to make copies for personal use of copyright material the person has a legal license for (i.e. you have bought the disk or the copyright work. However TRIPS also requires that it be illegal to circumvent any "technoligical measures" (encryption). Of the TRIPS signatories only Antigua and another Caribbean country have been allowed to ignore the TRIPS requirements (because the WTO found against the USA regarding on-line gamblining).
Therefore whilst you can, in some countries, make a copy of licensed copyright material if that copyright material is uses technollogical measure to prevent copying or control the use of that copyright material you cannot break those technological measures.
In addition TRIPS requires that it be an offence to have in your possesion (not just use) and device or software that would circumvent those technological measures.
This is why Jailbreaking is still illegal.
However, many DVD's that have been around for a while DO NOT have technological measures so, by the letter of the forum rules, it should be possible to discuss on the forum. Perhaps the forum rules should be changed to read "No material may be submitted that might be intended to promote or commit an illegal act or provide information such that an illegal act could be performed".

  • I'd like to copy my workout DVD's on my mac, then play them on my Apple TV so I won't wear them out and have to buy new ones.  Is this possible?

I've recently purchased some workout DVD's and was wondering if I can copy them to my mac, then watch them on my Apple TV so I don't wear the DVD's  out and have to buy new ones.  Is this possible?

so I don't wear the DVD's  out and have to buy new ones.
DVD's do not wear out from being played.  Nothing makes any physical contact with them to cause any wear.
And yes you can "RIP" a DVD and add it to iTunes which would let ATV play them.   You will need to Google RIPPING DVD though for details.  It violates the terms of service for the forum to talk about it here.
And in response to Rudder'scomment ALL DVD's are encrypted.   That is why you need HandBreak (and VideoLan) to decrypt them.

  • Cannot rip dvd

I have a DVD with a slideshow of a bunch of photos from my wedding that I want to RIP - or - import , as it were;  into imovie so I can grap parts of it for a video I'm building.  No matter what I do, no matter how many avenues I go down, no matter how many posts I read in this forum with people arguing back and forth about how easy or hard it is or what simple little free apps you need to download .......NOTHING works.  ALL of the "free" apps are bulls**t.  they watermark your work or give you one little clip of your movie unlees you buy the full $39.99 version.
There are things I really like about this Imac and things I really hate....like this.  This should be so simple - yet it is not.
I'm not even sure if I'm asking a question or just ranting about this whole hting.  I guess I'm asking a question.  Does anyone REALLY know how to do this ?
I'm seriously about to drive to the apple store and plunk down the dvd on the counter.
(lol.....the posters that laugh and say how simple this is ALWAYS, ALWAYS, ALWAYS leave out hugely important steps)

If the DVD is in the standard format of mpeg2 it is highly compressed and not intended for editing. You therefore have to 'reverse engineer' the material. You will experience some quality loss.
You need to convert the VOB files in the TS-Folder of the DVD back to DV which iMovie is designed to handle. For that you need mpegStreamclip:

  • Rip DVD Menus?

Is it possible to Rip/Copy a DVD while keeping the menus and everything intact? In other words to make a 'perfect copy' of a DVD?

For copying your created DVDs, not commercial ones:
    From Apple's Support:
+1. Insert the DVD-R video disc that you created into the SuperDrive.+
+2. Open the Disk Utility application. It's in the Utilities folder, which is in your Applications folder (or choose Utilities from the Finder's Go menu).+
+3. Select the disc (not just the disc session) you want to copy from the listing.+
+4. From the Images menu, choose New and the choose Image from "your disk name". (Mac OS X 10.4 and later: From the File menu, choose New and the choose Image from "your disk name").+
+5. Type a file name and choose "DVD/CD Master" from the Image Format pop-up menu.+
+6. Click the Create button. After the image has been created you should see it in the disk listing in the Disk Utility window.+
    +7. Eject the DVD-R video disc.+
+8. Select the disk image you created from the listing.+
+9. Click the Burn icon in the toolbar.+
+(Later versions of Disk Utility will use the ".cdr" extension instead of ".dmg")+
    +10. When prompted, insert a blank DVD-R disc.+
    +11. Click the Burn button.+

  • How to rip dvd's with newest MacBook Pro?

Hi, what is the best application to rip dvd's (with the latest MacBook Pro)? I want to save them and then edit in iMovie.
I've seen that Handbrake isn't suitable for 10.8.2 anymore.
    Thanks!!

I have seen a couple of posts about this, but they all seem to go in a different direction. The general theme of the problem is Handbrake not working on Mountain Lion but working on Snow Leopard.
Ever since I installed Mountain Lion on an external drive, I basically haven't been able to have Handbrake properly run. Using a disc as a source, it has wavered between stopping early with only about 5-10 minutes encoded to taking the full amount of time but only resulting in a short clip or a couple of short clips.
I think it has only worked once or twice total.
Since I still have Snow Leopard installed on my iMac original drive, I will often go back to that install and test HB and 99.99% of the time, it works without a hitch, thus giving me no other choice to believe it is something with ML or the HB install on ML at least.
