  • Can an intel iMac run OSX Tiger from an external hard drive?

Hi can anyone please tell me if it is possible to run OSX Tiger from an external hard drive on an Intel iMac running OSX 10.5 Leopard or later?
Or is it possible to partition the intel iMac's hard drive and add Tiger?
At the moment I am running Tiger on a partitioned hard drive shared with OSX Leopard and wish to upgrade to an intel Mac. I need tiger to run some software not compatible with newer Macs and also to access OS9 Classic. Thanx for your help.

IF you upgraded from Panther as you know you do not have an Intel based iMac. I beleive the limit of your upgrades on your current machine is going to be Leopard. The system requirements for Snow Leopard are:
    General requirements
Mac computer with an Intel processor
    1GB of memory
    5GB of available disk space
    DVD drive for installation
Some features require a compatible Internet service provider; fees may apply
This is straight from Apple so yes if you want to go beyond Leopard then you must purchase a new machine. My suggestion would be to begin replacing your legacy apps, you are extremely far behind and the longer you wait the more painful it will be to get current.
    Good luck.

  • Just got a new imac and my iwork software wont work. I have the serial numbers but after migrating from my old mac running OSX tiger it won't even give me that opportunity. I do not have any discs as this was downloaded. Help

Just got a new imac and my iwork software wont work. I have the serial numbers but after migrating from my old mac running OSX tiger it won't even give me that opportunity. I do not have any discs as this was downloaded. Help

Hi, hopefully you guys can help me out, I just
purchased a G5 iMac to replace my aging dell desktop,
and now i'm more or less completely os x dependant
(I've had an ibook for a few months now). Anyway, I
    have a few questions:
    1. Does anyone know of a (free) mail notifier tool,
that will alert me when I recieve new pop3 mail? I
used to use AIM for this in windows
The built in email program does sound an alert for new messages.
    2. Anyone know of a good (free, again) IRC client?
    iChat works well.
    3. I noticed earlier that my screen was flickering,
it seems to have subsided for now, but is that normal
to encounter in a new display? It wasn't really bad
flicker, but I could see it.
    No idea.
    4. I leave my desktops on 24/7x365, will that be a
problem with this iMac? Display shuts off of course
    after 30 mins
You could set the iMac to go to sleep after non use. My Macs are
always sleeping when not in use, waking them up takes seconds.
Unlike windoze, never knew if it would be locked up or not.
    5. Should I get the extended warranty? I'm usually
against them, but I am expecting this computer to
last me at least 3 years (for $1300 it better!)
before I upgrade, as I got that much out of a Dell
and from what I understand, Mac's do not age nearly
    as fast as Windows pc's.
It is well worth the cost. Never know what might happen. Also
it is good insurance for future upgrades. I traded in my G4 tower
purchased two years ago for 75% of what I paid for it. Apple care
transfers, giving the buyer the remainder of your warranty.
    Thank you for any help,
    -Evan

  • Is it possible to run in Tiger if Leopard is installed?

Logic Express 7 isn't running right in Leopard b/c my audio device doesn't have drivers for Leopard, but it ran great in Tiger. IS there any way to boot in Tiger instead of Leopard. I remember being able to boot in OS 9 at school after OSX was released b/c Protools free woudln't run in OSX, but i wasn't sure if you could go back in versions of X. I hope so. Any help?

In general, to partition a drive, you start Disk Utility, select the drive you want to partition (the upper icon with the drive model), click on the partition tab, select the Volume scheme i.e number of the partitions (in your case that would be 2), select the format (Mac Extended journaled for you) and in options select the partition map scheme (GUID for intel macs and Apple partition map for PPC). You can also adjust the relative size of the partitions by dragging the divider between them. When all this is set, click "apply".
In your case there is a twist. You'll be partitioning your start up drive which can't be done when you are booted from it. Therefore, you need to boot from the leopard (or tiger) install DVD. Once past the language screen, go to Utilities->disk Utility and proceed from there. You'll need to back up your data because I think it will be erased in the partitioning process.
Once you have your internal drive partitioned in two, you can install Tiger on one half and leopard on the other.

  • Mac mini OSX Tiger 10.4.11 Upgrade options?

    Dear All,
    I am confused.
I have a mac mini 1.1 Intel Core Duo 1.83GHz with 2 GB RAM. (which i bought June 2007 and upgraded)
Its currently running OSX Tiger 10.4.11.
I have lost the original disks that shipped with the mac and I want to erase and install the OS so it like its brand new again. Over the years I have installed loads of rubbish programs etc and just want to back up itunes and iphoto and start from new.
Is it possible to just buy the latest OS Mountain Lion on disk for about £15 and perform an erase and install?
What confuses me is: someone mentioned that i have to purchase each of the OSs (so 10.5, 10.6 and so on) this seems a bit extreme as I dont want to upgrade, but install fresh.
    Any advice is greatly appreciated.
    Thank you.

Core Duo won't work for beyond 10.6.8.
    If it's a core Duo & not a Core2Duo, then it'll only run in 32 bit mode.
You need to get 10.6 & update to 10.6.8 first to be able to buy it from the App Store & download it.
    Snow Leopard/10.6.x Requirements...
    General requirements
       * Mac computer with an Intel processor
        * 1GB of memory (I say 4GB at least, more if you can afford it)
        * 5GB of available disk space (I say 30GB at least)
        * DVD drive for installation
        * Some features require a compatible Internet service provider; fees may apply.
        * Some features require Apple’s MobileMe service; fees and terms apply.
Which apps work with Mac OS X 10.6?...
    http://snowleopard.wikidot.com/
It's been pulled from the online store, so you have to call Apple to buy it, last I heard, but quick, call before it's gone!
    Call Apple 1-800-MY-APPLE
    Lion/101.7 System requirements
        •    x86-64 processor (Macs with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Intel Core i3, Intel Core i5, Intel Core i7, or Xeon processor.)
        •    At least 2GB of memory, I say 6 GB
        •    Latest version of Mac OS X Snow Leopard (10.6.8), with the Mac App Store installed
        •    At least 4GB of disk space for downloading, I say 50 GB.
Like Snow Leopard, Lion does not support PowerPC-based Macs (e.g., Power Macs, PowerBooks, iBooks, iMacs (G3-G5), eMacs).
Lion also does not support 32-bit Intel Core Duo or Core Solo based Macs. Rosetta is no longer available in Lion, which means Lion no longer supports PowerPC applications.

  • Going from iPhone 3GS to iPhone 5 and Mac OSX Tiger

    Hello,
I currently have one of the first Intel Mac Book Pro's running OSX Tiger.  I also have a 3GS running ios 4.1 which I'm about to upgrade to the iPhone 5.
What is the best way to back-up/transfer my contacts/txt's/etc from my 3GS to my 5?  I can't run the latest version of iTunes and eventually this year I will upgrade to a new iMac which would solve the problem...but for now I would like to transfer all my data over.
    Thanks,
    Mike

The problem with that is my current iphone is running ios 4.1 and my laptop is running tiger so I don't have icloud.  Without upgrading to snow leopard and then to lion/mountian lion to get icloud is there any other option?

  • Unable to load OSX Tiger after powercut during software update

My Imac G5 (purchased September 2005), running OSX Tiger, was in the middle of a software update when we had a powercut. Now, when you turn it on, it gets as far as the blue screen with the grey Mac OSX box and status bar (after the grey screen with the spinning dial), but no further. The status bar does not move and I cannot get it to safe boot. If I hold down the shift key after the start up tone, then the fans come on and it takes a little longer to go past the initial grey screen, but once again stops when you get to the blue screen and status bar. Also, my install discs have disappeared off the face of the planet. Help!

Boot it from your install CD/DVD...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
If it completes fine, then use the Archive and Install feature...

  • Can I run OSX 10.1.x on my OSX 10.8.2 iMac?

    Greetings,
I have a 4 year old iMac running OSX 10.8.2.  I recently purchased a Nikon film scanner (discontinued 3 - 4 years ago) that has bundled software compatible with OSX 10.1.x and Windows XP.  I know that it is possible to load WIndows XP on my mac if I use Parallels or possibly a virtual machine software package.  But is it also possible to run OSX 10.1.x on my 10.8.2 mac?  If so, how would I do it?  Does Apple still sell OSX 10.1.x?  I'd prefer to avoid installing WIndows on my mac if I can avoid doing so.  If you know I can't do this, please tell me and I'll get on with the Microsoft solution.
    Thanks,
    BCB

To the best of my knowledge, Nikon has no drivers for their film scanners compatible with any recent version of Mac OS X, much less OS X 10.8, and never will now.. You have a couple of possible options:
    VueScan from Hamrick Software:  http://www.hamrick.com
    SilverFast from LaserSoft:  http://www.silverfast.com/show/scanners-nikon/en.html
Neither are free and SilverFast is not cheap, but it's probably the most professional. Both will support Mountain Lion.
    Regards.

  • LP8 with OSX Tiger (Very Stable ?)

I would like to go ahead and install LP8 on my Mac Pro 8 core, currently running OSX Tiger (10.4.11), but wanted to check on stability issues before proceeding with the install.
So, is LP8 very stable running on OSX Tiger (10.4.11) ?
Any LP 8 with OSX Tiger users feedback would be great, how about the famous "core audio overlaod" issue ? is this mostly a Leopard problem ? Should I go ahead and install on Tiger, or wait for the next LP8 update ?
    Any feedback on this ?
    Thanks.

    That's Great !
I'm glad to know that LP8 with OSX (10.4.11) Tiger, is now very stable, and efficient. This is very comforting to know, well, now I can look forward to begin working with Logic Studio/ LP8.
I guess, the next update, or two, should allow for a stable, and efficient LP8 with Leopard, but for now Tiger sounds like the way to go.
Thank You Very Much for the feedback.

  • Have osx tiger, firefox 1.5. can i go to ff3.5 without going to leopard

my imac runs osx tiger and firefox 1.5, which is no longer supported. can i download firefox 3.5 so i don't have to change to osx leopard. is firefox 3.5 supported and compatable with tiger?

If you mean OSX 10.4.x then the most current you can use is actually Firefox '''3.6.18''' which can be found at http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all-older.html
If your Mac was PPC and not a Intel then there was a second option for PPC users of OSX 10.4/10.5 at http://www.floodgap.com/software/tenfourfox/

  • How will my iMac run OSX?

Hi, I have an iMac G3, with 333 MHZ Processor, 64 MBs of RAM, and a 6 GB HD.
I have a MacBook Pro for all my day to day use, but I want an iMac G3 primarily for just a text writer and something that will stay in my room for the occasional iTunes music playing.
I recently was given Mac OS X 10.3 Panther from work, and I know I can run this on this iMac if I upgrade the RAM to 512 MBs. Where is a good place to find 512 MBs of RAM for this iMac?
I heard it is possible to run OSX on an iMac G3 with 6 GBs of space if I take off the language, additional printer drivers, and if I maybe take off an app or two, but just incase, where is a good place to find a good, cheap HD for an iMac G3? I think 10 - 20 GBs is enough.
I want to spend under 50 dollars, preferably in the 20 - 30 dollar range!
    Thank you!

You can get the RAM at OWC
    http://eshop.macsales.com/MyOWC/Upgrades.cfm?model=61&type=Memory&TI=1526&shoupg rds=Show+Upgrades
Even if you buy elsewhere, those are the specs. The tall module only works on the top socket. The low-profile module will fit in either top or bottom socket. Getting one should give you 320mb, and that should allow you to run Panther, but getting a pair for 512mb would be better.
I don't think you can get a new 20GB drive these days. 120GB is the largest size that will be fully recognized. It needs to be IDE. You also have to partition any drive larger than 8GB so that the first partition fits below the +8Gb limit+. The OS needs to be installed on that partition. The rest of the space, up to 128GB total for the drive, will be available once startup is completed.
You can install a minimal Mac OS X Panther and still have about 3GB of space left on a 6GB drive. NeoOffice is a big bulky program, and it may not run well on that Mac.
text writer and something that will stay in my room for the occasional iTunes music playing.
Without spending any money, you can get that functionality. There are good word processors that work with Mac OS 9 and below. If you can find a copy, WriteNow is a great one. You can also use AppleWorks, which you may already have. There are also current programs like this one.
    http://members.aol.com/iText/
With Mac OS 9, you can run iTunes 2.
    http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macos/9688
Be sure to install the firmware update before installing Mac OS X. You need to do this while you can still boot into Mac OS 9.

  • J2SE SDK for OSX Tiger

Well, this seems like a good place to make my post...
My problem is quite simple. I can't find a JDK for my Mac running OSX Tiger. Links on the internet always lead me to Apple's Developer Connection, but their 1.4.2 developer tools will only run on Panther.
Maybe I'm missing something crucial. And I'd really appreciate your help. I've downloaded the latest J2SE runtimes, etc. All I need now to get started is the tools to compile and run some tutorials!
I've tried using NetBeans, but I can't get it to run the tutorials at java.com at all. Who's got some good advice?

Check the Apple Computer, Inc. developer download site:
    http://developer.apple.com/java/download/
It shows they posted Java 2 SE 5.0 Release 3 on 11/15/05.
    Enjoy!

  • How do I get Linux on Slot Loading iMac G3 350 running with Tiger OSX?

    Hi,
How do I get Linux (Ubuntu) running alongside Tiger 10.4 on an iMac G3? I have a 350MHz Slot Loading iMac G3 Indigo currently running OSX 10.4. I would like to have Ubuntu and OSX on the same computer, so when I boot, I can choose which OS to boot into.
I have tried several times, but I can't seem to boot from the Ubuntu PPC CD. In the Ubuntu pages, it says that there are two types of iMac G3's. New style and Old Style. Supposedly New style ones are easier to have Ubuntu on it, but I don't know which I have.
    Any help is appreciated.

The "new style" they refer to is probably distinguished by the type of optical drive it has. The two types are completely different designs (on the inside), but the most obvious visual difference is the slot-loading optical drive in the newer design, and the tray-loading optical drive in the older design.
As for Ubuntu, is it an old enough version you are trying, so that it works on PowerPC Macs. How did you burn the CD (?), because some of those old drives may have trouble with booting (or even reading) some CDRW media. CDR generally works

  • Is it possible to run Tiger in Snow Leopard using Parallels?

    Hey All,
Anyone know if it is possible to run Tiger in Snow Leopard using Parallels?
I am using SPSS 16 and it is not compatible with snow leopard. A temporary fix right now if I partitioned my hard drive and installed Leopard on some extra space to run SPSS. This is kind of annoying because I only need Leopard to use SPSS. I would rather emulate it so I can listen to iTunes and check my email in SL.
What about Panther? I think I even have a copy of Panther to install in Parallels?
I read somewhere that the EULA restricts OS X from being emulated, which seems odd for Mac users who need to test or use old software. I understand though about emulating OS X on windows machine though. I guess they need to blow off the whole foot than just cut off one toe.
    Thanks for the thoughts!

From what I can tell, doing this would be, at best, of dubious legality.
Even so, the popular opinion seems to be that it would take some degree of hacking to pull off a virtual machine running OS X. I think that unless you are willing and able to undertake such a task, your best bet is to stick with a partition running an old version or wait for SPSS to be updated for Snow Leopard.
Although...... I have Parallels 4 (current version is 5) and it has an option, when setting up a new Virtual Machine, to install Mac OS X server (see image linked below). Perhaps if you could get a copy of the server edition of the OS you would have more success?
