Is it possible to save a file that won't open anymore?

I have an Indesign CS6 file that I haven't opened for a few months and now it won't open and crashes Indesign each time I try opening it.
All other Indesign files are OK, but this one???
Does anyone have any suggestions bar recreating the file, which is my last resort.  I do have the PDF that I sent to the printers, but need to add in two new pages.
Many thanks

I'd like to echo Peter's concerns about opening PDFs in Illustrator... Illustrator is not a PDF editor. The only PDFs that can be safely opened in Illustrator is a PDF that is saved from Adobe Illustrator using File>Save As>PDF.
There are other options available - Markzware can and do as far as I know convert the InDesign file to Quark and back to InDesign as a service - you could try contacting them if all else fails http://markzware.com/support/

The only full PDF files that Adobe Illustrator can safely open are PDF files saved from Adobe Illustrator itself using the save for editability option.
Why? Adobe Illustrator operates in +either+ CMYK +or+ RGB and +only one+ specific color space per document. Thus, a color-managed PDF file with more than one color space with opened in Illustrator would be ruined. Also there are many PDF constructs that Illustrator knows nothing about. At best, they are treated as foreign objects that cannot be edited. And for text, Illustrator only "understands" particular encodings. General PDF can lose text when opened in Illustrator.
Illustrator can often be safely used to modify specific, simple graphic objects as the vector graphics touch-up tool editor, but not much more.
Proceed at your own risk!

Adobe Illustrator is not, repeat not, and repeat yet once again not a general purpose PDF file editor. Opening any arbitrary PDF file in Adobe Illustrator other than PDF files saved in that version of later of Adobe Illustrator with the editability option (which saves the Illustrator document editing data as private data within the PDF file) may result in content loss or corruption.
To answer your specific question, don't expect any PDF layers from AutoCAD to be preserved.

PDF layers are part of an overall feature known as optional content in PDF and are conceptually very different than Illustrator layers. Since PDF optional content features in general are very much a superset of Illustrator layers (PDFMaker for PowerPoint uses optional content to handle certain slide build features, for example), there would be no easy way for Illustrator to readily pick and choose what optional content features to support and translate. As such, don't expect this to be "rectified" in any way in future Illustrator releases.
(To make things even more interesting, both PDF and Illustrator layers are very different than Photoshop layers which allow for defined interactions between layers such as masking!)

  • Is it possible to embed a file that can be opened with another app in IBA?

  • Is it possible to only view files that could be opened by a program?

Hello all, this is my first mac and for the most part I find it as good or better than windows in almost everyway. One feature that I guess I took for granted in windows was that it only displayed files that could be opened by a program in that program. For instance when I am in powerpoint and I want to open another powerpoint file, I would hit open and it would only display powerpoint files. I have noticed in OS X if you go to open, then enable all powerpoint files all it does is grey out everything but the powerpoint files. Is there anyway instead of graying them out, it just doesn't display them like what happens in windows? Thanks for your help, Scott

This has nothing to do with the OS. It's controlled by the individual program. The programmer has to write the specific code for what will or will not be displayed in a file dialog. If the programmer uses the code primitives "normally" then unmatching files are grayed out. This way you can still see files in the directory in case you want to open a file that has the wrong extension. Usually the application provides a drop down menu where you can select options such as display all files, only matching files, etc. However, the programmer has to implement these features.
One thing that will help you a great deal is to stop looking for OS X to be like Windows. Although there are many elements that are similar there are many more that are not. If you haven't read this yet, you may find it helpful: Switch 101.

  • Does photoshop cs6 not save over files that are also open in cs5?

I started a project in CS5, saved it, left it open, then opened the same file in CS6.  Then I started steadily working on the file in CS6 for about 20 minutes.  I saved frequently while working in CS6.  Then Photoshop crashed, I believe because I had several smart objects open at once.  However, when I checked the file I had been saving, it was still in an identical state to when I stopped working on it in CS5.  Not only that, but the "recovered file" was about 10 minutes behind in CS6.
    This is really frustrating.

I don't know what went wrong for you but you are correct that it's normally possible for CS6 to save over a file that's open in CS5, and vice versa, and the same thing is possible with many other apps.
Furthermore, some apps watch for changes being made to a file which they have open and will automatically update the version of the file which they hold in memory with the modified version that another app has written to disc.
Of course, there are apps, databases for example, which do lock files which they have open.
None of that helps you, but just letting you know that you weren't wrong to expect your work to be saved.

  • Need to edit a Captivate file that won't open. Can the SWF be edited?

We are currently using Adobe eLearning Suite 2 (Cp5).
We have 2 older Captivate files (Cp 3 or 4) that will not open; they act like they're opening but eventually they just time out without the error message that you normally get with a corrupt file.
So all we have access to are the SWFs & zip files that were uploaded into our LMS.
We are switching to a different LMS and need to quickly make an edit to these files before they are uploaded to the new LMS.
Is it possible to edit the SWF (delete about 30 seconds of content off the end of each file) and still have them function as far as registering completion? And if so, what program would I need?

Sorry, but only Adobe can speculate as to why the older files refuse to open in the newer version. Phase of the moon? Jupiter aligning with Mars while the house of the Moon is in retrograde?
Personally, I'm going with the Mass Coronal Ejection theory!
Assuming there is really no interaction going on, you *MIGHT* be able to fudge things to get that last 30 seconds to go away by playing the SWF and using Captivate to record the SWF as it plays.

Putting aside copyright issues in (naive?) belief you have a legitimate use of the material, your problem lies in the file or disk. One of them is either corrupt or not compatible with the drive you are trying to read it on. Try it on another computer (even a PC) and if you can read it on that computer make a new copy of the file on a new disk or a firewire drive (or USB stick if it fits).

Is there a way to convert .cwk text files I saved from my iMac PPC so I can view them on my new iMac (intel chip)? I get a message when I try to open them now that says PowerPC applications are no longer supported.

  • How can I save a page offline? the "complete" option in "save as" produces a folder w/ 36 kb files that will not open.

the "complete" option in "save as" produces a folder w/ 36 kb files that will not open anything - can't I save the page as a single offline file?

This is not really an answer just my comments on your question.
I am sure I recollect efforts being made to get mhtml to work with FF.
Probably the important thing to remember about .mhtml is that if other browsers do support it they may need addons, and may not necessarily render the content correctly/consistently.
There are FF addons designed for archiving webpages, you could try them, but that then assumes the recipient has the same software.
You could simply save the page from FF to your XP pc; then offline open it with and save it using IE, before then emailing using FF, and attaching the .mht or mhtml file that you have now created on your PC.
As an alternative method, in some cases it could be worth considering taking a screen grab of the required page, then sending that to the recipient as a single email attatchment using either a bitmap or jpeg file format for instance.
Something such as an airline booking may be designed with a print option, possibly it could be worthwile looking at sending the print file itself as an email attachment.

  • Is it possible to save HTML files to touch memory?

Is it possible to save html files to the touch memory and view them when not within WiFi range? When traveling I'm more often than not without a WiFi connection. I do NOT want an iPhone nor it's hefty wireless data bill. I simply want to view locally saved HTML files. Is that possible without jailbreaking? Thank you.

This is a great question. I want to buy a Touch but I won't buy one until I know the answer to this question.
I went to an Apple store last week and told them I ride the bus to work every day. I said I wanted to download information over my wireless network at home, then view the info while riding the bus to work.
The guy told me that I could view whatever was in my cache. I don't know how big the cache is. I read through the Itouch user guide and couldn't find any info.
If someone has some useful experience, it would be very appreciated. If you can use the cache, how many typical web pages can you store?

  • I cannot save PDF files that has a lock on the right hand side of the tab in safari iOS 5 from my iPad. Please help to find a solution.

Can someone help find a fix of how to save PDF files from safari in iOS 5.0.1? The PDF files show a lock on the right hand side of tab. Only these lock PDF cannot be save. Any help will be highly appreciated.

I assume that you have iBooks or GoodReader or Adobe Reader - some app that will open PDF files so my suggestion would be to start with the basic things, restart your iPad, reset it or quit Safari and restart.
Restart the iPad by holding down on the sleep button until the red slider appears and then slide to shut off. To power up hold the sleep button until the Apple logo appears and let go of the button.
Reset the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons.
In order to close/quit apps - Go to the home screen first by tapping the home button. Quit/close open apps by double tapping the home button and the task bar will appear with all of you recent/open apps displayed at the bottom. Tap and hold down on any app icon until it begins to wiggle. Tap the minus sign in the upper left corner to close the apps. Restart the iPad. Restart the iPad by holding down on the sleep button until the red slider appears and then slide to shut off.
To power up hold the sleep button until the Apple logo appears and let go of the button.
The lock to the right side of the tab indicates that the website is secure - or at least that is what it looks like in Safai on my iPad. Sites with the https in the address have the lock icon in the tab, non secure sites - web pages without the https - do not have the lock icon. I'm not sure if that has any bearing on it - none of the PDF files that I have opened in Safari have the lock icon.
But if you can open the file - it doesn't make sense that it would be locked??? Try the basic suff and see if any of that helps.

  • Max number of files that can be opened in harddrive through AEBS?

What is the maximum number of files that can be opened in a external hard drive (Lacie 500 GB, USB 2.0) connected through the AEBS? Looks like there is a limit.
When I am trying to 'seed' files through a bit-torrent client (Azureus 2.5.0.4) many of them give an error "Error: too many open files". I never had this error before.
When I tried to delete a file in the hard drive, I got the error "too many open files". Then I stopped 'seeding' in Azureus and I was able to delete the file.

Thanks Chris,  it has almost become unwieldy now at this stage ... I'm actually thinking of calling another template for certain sections
    I belive this is possible..

  • Need Help With Exporting EPS Files That Will Be Opened In Another Program

I am trying to export some files from Illustrator in EPS format, to be used in another program called "Blufftitler". Their documentation is pretty sparse and doesn't go into much detail. It only mentions the following:
    "Limited support
BluffTitler has limited EPS support. It only imports filled shapes built out of lines and curves from uncompressed, unoptimized EPS files."
No matter what settings I try in Illustrator when exporting the EPS file, it won't open in Blufftitler, and keeps throwing me errors. I tried Choosing "Illustrator 3" as the format, and turning off the preview option. I also tried "expanding" the shape itself several times too. Is there some other way in Illustrator to just export a bare-bones EPS files without any extras or other stuff that might cause problems with other programs?
The funny thing is, when I create EPS files with another program, such as Vector Magic, they work fine in Blufftitler - it just seems to have a problem with EPS files created in Illustrator specifically.
Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks in advance!

The main problem is with BluffTitler is it doesn't have a very good eps handler as it can really only import eps files that are about 10k each and are not overly complex. If you look at all the sample .eps files that come with it, each one is about 1 or 2k each. A simple circle in Illustrator, even when saved as v3 without a preview, is around 258k. The reason for the larger file sizes is due to the extra things being saved in the file that aren't even on the page, such as brush presets and graphic styles. The sample .eps files that come with BluffTitler don't have these presets so the files are already smaller.
Something you may want to try is to open up one of the sample eps files and use that file for your vector work but save the file with a new name. I found that by doing this I could get the files down to a much smaller size. You may also want to setup any vectors in Illustrator first, save them, and then open the files in InkScape, http://www.inkscape.org. From what I've read, InkScape can get you fairly small file sizes so it's something you should check out.
