Is it possible to save an Illustrator file as an older version?

I am running the latest version of Illustrator. My client has an older version of Illustrator. Is it possible to save it in an older format so it can be opened by my client?
Thanks

Yes, you can choose the version of the file you are saving in the Illustrator Options window (second save dialog) at the top. But be advised that if you used any version specific options, they may not work the same in an earlier version (Drop Shadows [Gaussian Blur] items being the most obvious).

    Diamond DRP,
    You may download a free trail of CS6 or CC.

  • Is it possible to save as EPS file?

    I am making a logo using a couple of different fonts - no graphics. Is it possible to save as EPS file? Or, if not - is there a way to export it to another program that will save it as EPS file?

    OP - here is a thought.
    First, a Photoshop PDF with transparency is acceptable for InDesign. But many people want a flattened format to place in older programs such as Quark 6, or Pagewrecker.
    They often use EPS. Photoshop will outline all fonts in the EPS output. Also with EPS you do not have a dual file format, so you must save a copy. These are two fundamental differences between Photoshop EPS and Photoshop PDF.
    Here is another option if you need flattened output, but you still want the PSD info wrapped in a single file.
    Save as Photoshop PDF, layers checked.
    Select "PDF/X-1a" preset. By the standard, choose "None", When you do this "Photoshop Editing Capabilities" should default to enabled (if not, enable it)
    When you save in this fashion, you are saving a flattened PDF output with vector data for other applications, but you also retain the native Photoshop file. This file can be opened for editing in Photoshop and can also be opened for evaluation in Adobe Acrobat.
    Please, please be wary of Photoshop fonts. The fonts are embedded subset in the PDF, but sometimes you encounter glyph width errors when preflighting the PDF in Acrobat.
    Photoshop has vector capabilities, but these capabilities are half - baked. Each and every font glyph becomes a clipping mask for pixel data. Not an ideal construct. For some RIPS, Photoshop fonts can blow up like dynamite.
    I'm not trying to discourage utilizing Photoshop vector. But if possible, set your type in InDesign or Illustrator, it's safer in the long run.

    42nato,
    You may try the list (skip 5) in this case).
    The following is a general list of things you may try when the issue is not in a specific file, and when it is not caused by issues with opening a file from external media, see below. You may have tried/done some of them already; 1) and 2) are the easy ones for temporary strangenesses, and 3) and 4) are specifically aimed at possibly corrupt preferences); 5) is a list in itself, and 6) is the last resort.
    If possible/applicable, you should save current artwork first, of course.
    1) Close down Illy and open again;
    2) Restart the computer (you may do that up to at least 5 times);
    3) Close down Illy and press Ctrl+Alt+Shift/Cmd+Option+Shift during startup (easy but irreversible);
    4) Move the folder (follow the link with that name) with Illy closed (more tedious but also more thorough and reversible);
    5) Look through and try out the relevant among the Other options (follow the link with that name, Item 7) is a list of usual suspects among other applications that may disturb and confuse Illy, Item 15) applies to CC, CS6, and maybe CS5);
    Even more seriously, you may:
    6) Uninstall (ticking the box to delete the preferences), run the Cleaner Tool (if you have CS3/CS4/CS5/CS6/CC), and reinstall.

  • HT201361 Is it possible to save the screenshot files to a different folder than desktop. How can I change the folder?

    Is it possible to save the screenshot files to a different folder than desktop (that is the default). How can I change the destination folder? Thank you, Sal

    To change the screenshot capture location to a new place on your Mac, first think of a location that would serve you properly. We like to place ours in a "Screenshot" folder located inside of the User's "Pictures" folder. To change the location to this new location, open the Terminal and enter the following command:
    defaults write com.apple.screencapture location /Users/[u]/Pictures/Screenshots/
    Replace "[u]" with the name of the user on your system. Once you have entered this command, let's restart the screen capture utility by restarting the SystemUIServer by entering the following command:
    killall SystemUIServer
    You can optionally log out and back in instead of entering this second command, thus restarting the SystemUIServer. Once restarted, all screen captures taken from here on out will end up in your /Pictures/Screenshots/ folder in the User's home folder on your Mac.

    Is it possible to save RoboHelp 7 files as Microsoft Help 2.0 .HXS files for integration with MS development products, such as Visual Studio? If not in v7, then how about v8? Thank you.

    Hi Brian
    RoboHelp 7 or 8 does not understand Help 2. So the short answer here is no.
    You might investigate FAR. I believe FAR will allow creating Help 2.

    Well, you didn't give any information on your Mac, your OS version, transfer pics from where to where, or anything else, so guessing is the best anyone can do at this point: you should be able to simply using drag and drop.

  • If I save an Illustrator file as PDF, isn't it still vector?

    I was asked to send a logo to someone who wanted to wanted to forward it to someone else to use (possibly a printer or maybe even a newspaper or magazin)e, so I sent it to them in PDF format.
    The person I sent it to just emailed me and asked me to provide it as vector.
    So I sent the original Illustrator version as well as an EPS version.
    Still, I thought this was odd. When I worked at a newspaper, we worked with PDF files that clients provided with no problem. The policy there was to open them in Acrobat Pro and re-save as TIFF. But I also often open them in Illustrator to make changes and it has never been a problem. When I open with Illustrator, they are indeed vectors.
    Maybe they don't have Acrobat Pro or Illustrator, but even then, can't most DTP programs place PDF files now?
    Sorry if these are stupid questions.

    When sending a logo after completion to a client, I give a wide range of files for the exact reasons you mentioned. I have no idea what programs they have, or will have in the future. giving them a "package" allows them to have a great set to send to all areas of their company without having to come back and requesting more files.
    I found great articles as reference in case you are interested:

    http://www.thedesigncubicle.com/2009/01/what-should-you-get-from-your-logo-designer/
    http://99designs.com/designer-blog/2011/05/18/file-types-logo-design/
    They advise:
    1 x original Illustrator file (.AI) – Containing flat colour, graded and B&W logos (File > Save As…)
    3 x Illustrator 8 EPS files – Separate flat colour, graded, and B&W logos (File > Save As…)
    3 x PDF files – Separate flat colour, graded, and B&W logos (File > Save As…)
    3 x High resolution JPEG images – Separate flat colour, graded, and B&W logos (File > Export…)
    The following files are often used when saving print designs:
    PDF (Portable Document Format) is a file format developed by Adobe Systems that can be universally downloaded and viewed by any computer that has the Adobe Acrobat plug-in. Today, PDFs are widely favored by most designers — it can be saved as an editable file which is great for clients.
    EPS (Encapsulated PostScript file) is a vector format of your logo. It can be re-sized without losing image quality. Due to it’s high quality, it is commonly used with print elements such as business cards or brochures. If you ever question when to use it, ask yourself, “Will this be used for a high quality print?”
    TIFF (Tagged Image File Format) is widely supported and works in almost any program. It produces a higher quality image than a JPG or PNG, but is not a vector format like EPS. It is widely used among publishing industries and photographers. It is best used in common things like invoices, page layouts or letterheads.
    I hope that helps, Please post back with any other questions

  • How do you save EPS file to an older version in Photoshop CS6?

    Just upgraded to CS6 (I know...its a year old!).  Every logo I try to open in AI states the logo was created in a newer version of AI and it won't allow me to open it.  That is not true as the graphic designer sending them to me created them in CS6.  I open them in Photoshop, but I can't figure out how to save them in an older version which is needed for one of my clients.  Help!

    Just confirming...  You have a perpetual license (not a cloud subscription), right?
    Even if it was just installed, Adobe always makes a practice of delivering their .0.0 version initially and requiring you to update it.
    Choose Help - System Info in the Photoshop menus to get the exact Photoshop version number that's installed.
    Choose Help - Updates and follow the instructions to update to the latest, which I believe 13.0.1.3.

  • Trying to open a file from an older version to a new version of indesign

    I'm on am mac and i am trying to open a file from the 2014 indesign with 2015 software, i am getting this error:
    what i don't understand is why a newer version can't read the file of an older version

    That is exactly the opposition of what you are trying to tell us.
    Correct is:
    You have Adobe CS6, version 8.x.
    You get a file from someone else, who has Adobe CC 2014, version 10.x.
    You are trying to open that file on your computer.
    But because that file was created in a later version, you get this message.
    Either ask to get an IDML file (with a PDF), tell them, they should go to File > Package… and check IDML and PDF export.
    Better would be, if you also subscribe to the Creative Cloud to be up to date with the latest version.
    But what you should do anyway, update your InDesign CS6, as there are updates available which will correct this error message, as from CS7 upwards no CS exists anymore.

  • How to save an illustrator file that contains gradients as a pdf print file without the gradients streaking on the print

    When I create files in Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, and Indesign if the design includes gradients and I save or export it as a pdf for print, whenever I have the file printed the gradients often come out with lines and streaks in the print. I usually work around this by copying the gradient to a file of its own, save it as a jpeg, and then insert the jpeg back into the original file before saving it as a pdf. This can be a big hassle and I was wondering if there's a setting in illustrator, photoshop, and Indesign in order to avoid the hassle.

    You would have to check your color management and things like overprint settings or the ink levels of the color components. Streaking is usually a sign of areas getting oversaturated and the automatic adjustments in the printer driver being unable to compensate. and then of course other factors may figure in like banding inherent in using gradients across large areas, out of gamut issues for certain colors and what have you. You'd have to be much more specific about all of that for anyone to even begin to advise specifically...

  • Can you save an Illustrator file to an Editable PDF format

    I have made a menu for a Restuarant on Illustrator and I want my client to be able to go into the file and edit the text. They do not have illustrator and was wondering if I can save it as an Editable PDF?
    Thanks in advance for you help.

    No. You cannot create Enabled PDF Forms (that's what you're talking about) from Illustrator. Illustrator can export a PDF, but it is not Enabled For Reader Extensions. It contains no editable fields.
    1. Do your artwork in Illustrator. Leave out the fields that you want the end user to be able to edit.
    2. Save as PDF (without Illustrator editability).
    3. Open in Acrobat Professional.
    4. Create the desired fields and set their properties. Save the file.
    5. Enable the file for Reader Extensions (it's a command in Acrobat Professional.) Save the file again under a different name. That's the file you distribute to your end users. Your end users can then open it in Adobe Reader, edit the fields and save their edits.
