Is it possible to save book layout to be opened on another Mac?

I'm trying to figure out how to save a book layout of images to be opened on a much faster Mac. Is this possible? Allot of time was spent creating this layout, and I'm hoping not to have to recreate, but to save the layout and images to a external hard drive shared. Please help. There are to many cooks in the kitchen to be passing around a lap top. A PDF just won't cut it.

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Not in the way you're thinking of. What you'll need to do is duplicate your library, rename it Book Library, open it with iPhoto and delete all the photos that are not in the book and those you think might be added and then copy that Book Library folder to the fast Mac. You could try to share the library with all of the other Macs but that might be much more difficult that the Book Library method.

TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

CS5 - Can't save to firewire drives "file open by another application" error

Hi There,
We can't seem to use Fireworks CS5 with external drives. If we have a file open and try to save back to the disk, we receive an error saying it could not save because the file is open by another application - "Save As" seems to work though.
Is any one else experiencing this or have a fix?

I don't have a USB drive but can confirm that I can save files when the file is on the mac desktop or on a USB stick without any issues.
So yes, at this point I think the issue is confined to Firewire drives (at least on my system which is 10.5.8).

Aperture doesn't save book layout, book disappears

I start to create a book in Aperture. Then I quit Aperture. When I relaunch Aperture, the book no longer appears in the project. However, if I explore the database using "show package contents," I can see a file with the book's name. Why won't Aperture save my book layout? Why does the file appear to exist, yet the book doesn't appear in the project? Can I recover the in-progress layout?

Yep, that did it! Rebuilt the library as instructed, and the book layout reappeared in the project. Many thanks for the simple and effective solution!

Excel 2010 - Can't Save File Becasue It's Opened By Another User

Hi All,
I'm using excel 2010, I can create an excel doc, update it, save it on the network, then close it. Then go out of the folder its saved in, go back in and open the file but it flags up as read only as its 'opened by another user'.
I can confirm 100% that no one else has this file open.
This affects multiple users, I have a feeling this may be caused by an update but don't have anything solid to back that theory up.
All users who have this problem are running windows 7 Pro machines, all domain joined.
Can anyone offer any suggestions?

Please try the following methods:
Methods1:
Turn off the Details Pane shown at the bottom of Windows Explorer. Go to Organize -> Layout -> Details Pane. That fixes the first problem.
Turn off “Show pop-up description for folder and desktop items” Click on Tools -> Folder Options. In the box that opens up, click on the View tab. Scroll down the list to “Show pop-up description for folder and desktop items” and clear
the checkbox and then click OK. This fixes the second problem.
Turn off Preview Pane. Go to Organize -> Layout -> Preview Pane. This fixes number 3.

Unable to save document - Read Only or Open by another user error occurs when PDF is opened from Windows Explorer

Adobe Pro XI - using Windows 7 Pro OS
When a PDF document is opened from Windows Explorer, and pages are added, deleted, notations made, any type of changes, it cannot be saved until Windows Explorer is fully closed. If you try to save the document, you receive the following error - "The document could not be saved. The file may be read-only, or another user may have it opened. Please save the document with a different name or in a differnt folder. " I have confirmed the document is not read only, it is not open by another user, and it is not open multiple times. Once you fully close Windows Explorer, and try to save the document, it saves without a problem.
Are there settings in either Adobe Pro XI or Windows that will allow you to save documents without closing Windows Explorer first?
Thank you for any assistance you can provide. This error is a frustration since I open all my documents through Windows Explorer.

In REUSE_ALV_GRID_DISPLAY parameter I_SAVE pass the value 'A'.
Here is the SAP documentatn for this:
' ' = Display variants cannot be saved
Defined display variants (such as delivered display variants) can be selected for presentation regardless of this indicator. However, changes cannot be saved.
'X' = Standard save mode
Display variants can be saved as standard display variants.
Saving display variants as user-specific is not possible.
'U' = User-specific save mode
Display variants can only be saved as user-specific.
'A' = Standard and user-specific save mode
Display variants can be saved both as user-specific and as standard
variants. Users make their choice on the dialog box for saving the
display variant.

Is it possible to save a PDF to always open with a table of contents

We have a large doccuemnt that we would like to send out with a table of contents on the left hand side so that people can jump to the topic/subject they are looking for without having to scroll through the doccument, we have a contents page with links to the relevant page number but we want the same option down the side so as they are reading the doccument they can click on a subject they way without having to back to to the first page or scrolling through, is this possible?

When I click on php items (buttons, links) on a webpage, Firefox wants me to save the phtml file or open in another application.

I have looked for somewhere in the preferences to fix this, but cannot find it, and there is no relevant item on the list under the Applications tab, except maybe "Plain Text Document", which option already has a set default command. I have reinstalled Firefox four times now. The most confusing part: whether I am asked to open/save the phtml file or whether the browser simply takes me to the link location (as it should) is intermittent; it seems to be about 50% of clicks.

Start Firefox in <u>[[Safe Mode]]</u> to check if one of the extensions or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).

Try to disable hardware acceleration.

Can't save a windows file when opened on a MAC

A colleague is updating some Flash files. I copied them to a
DVD and gave them to her. She transfered them to the MAC. She can
open them, but she can't save them. Has anyone ever heard of this?

written media the permissions can get messed up. Can she save them
with a new name?
Otherwise. In the finder (after copying off the DVD) select
an item and do get info.

To copy an existing phone and copy the directory numbers, speed dials, busy lamp field/speed dials, and service URLs that are associated with the phone, locate the appropriate phone as described in "Finding a Phone" section, click the Super Copy button next to the phone that you want to copy, and continue with Step 5.

Is it possible for a G4 to use optical drive of another mac over a network

Well, is it? For some reason the optical drive on my G4 won't read certain CD's that are read by other Macs I have, but I can't see those drives over my network?

You can connect to it with file sharing, but you won't be able to use it as an installation source. In other words, you won't be able to reboot the G4 and see that drive over the network to boot from it.
If your G4's optical drive is consistently problematic, you could replace it quite easily and cheaply (if it's a desktop), or you might look at external optical drives.

What you want to do will be easiest with Yosemite and iOS 8 on your iPhone. Then you can store iWork documents on iCloud Drive and access them on your mobile devices, but also locally on your Mac. See this support document: iCloud Drive FAQ

Is there a way to save a specific set of open files?

Hi,
I'm trying to figure out if it's possible to save a specific set of open files in Flash so that when you close the app and then reopen it, you would either see the files that were open when you closed Flash or at least have the option to select it and it woud then open those files in the order that you left them.
Is that an option by any chance?
With all my class files open at one time, I hate having to reload them into the order that makes sense to me every time I launch Flash.
I was looking into the Projects panel which seems like it's in the direction of what I would like but I can't seem to find anwhere that saves open files.

I don't believe this is possible with Flash - I've used Flash for a long time, and certain learn new things all the time! But Flash only has a "memory" of recently open files, and doesn't automatically open them for you.
But, for class files, you're in luck. There's a 3rd party AS editor, FlashDevelop, that does EXACTLY that. When you launch it, it auto opens the multiple AS files you ahd open from the previous day/session. FlashDevelop is a wonderful tool to use for editing your AS (and is quicker than Flash, and does custom class introspection, where it auto-completes your own class properties & methods, as well as many other developer-friendly features).
