Is it possible to set up a Paragraph Style leaving the Font Style field blank?

We often have to import text into InDesign from Word docs. We place the docs (Command-D, rather than copying and pasting) in order to preserve italics, bold text, etc. As it is now, we have to select all the text and set each element separately - leaving the Font Style field blank - in the Character Palette.
It would save a lot of time, if we could set up a Paragraph Style without specifying the Font Style, (leaving it blank), which overrides the formatting we are trying to preserve. Is this possible?

The answer is "kind of". You can create the Paragraph Style you want to apply and select the paragraphs you want to apply it to - then right-click on the Paragraph Style and choose 'Apply "Body". Clear Character Styles.'
It is possible to do this as a Character Style if you click outside of a text area and create a new style. I do it all of the time as I import lots of Word documents to write to ePub (you have to define all of the styles to ensure the document looks right). Since the documents come in with small caps, bold, italics, different font sizes but the same font throughout.
So I have a style based on None with blank Font Size and Font Style which I apply to the whole document. If there is anything in these boxes you can just erase it by backspacing over the text.

    Is it possible to set a default music player for the music on my external while still keeping my iTunes the default player on my Mac ?

    There is no setting in the iPhone to set another default music player. The default is Music. If you are using another application, you are at the mercy of how that application operates as far as what occurs when it stops or errors out. The car is looking for music to play.

  • When saving a PDF from a FrameMaker book, is it possible to set document filenames as bookmarks in the PDF?

    When saving a PDF from a FrameMaker book, is it possible to set document filenames as bookmarks in the PDF? Currently when I have a Framemaker book that I want to save as a PDF, I choose Save Book As and then choose PDF for the file format. A dialog box comes up in which I can choose the Bookmarks tab and choose which tagged content I want to be made into bookmarks in the PDF file. What if I would rather have the filename of a document rather than the chapter title be a bookmark in the PDF? Is that possible? Where would I choose that option? Thanks!

    There are two ways that you could do this. You can either use postscript text frames and enter the correct pdfmark entries to show the file name with the corresponding actions (i.e. where to go in the PDF) or you can use hidden text in FM and the "Filename (Short) " variable in a unique paratag to be picked up by FM's bookmark creation.
    To go the pdfmark route, see http://www.pdflib.com/fileadmin/pdflib/pdf/pdfmark_primer.pdf for details and also consult the Adobe Pdfmark Reference manual (http://www.adobe.com/content/dam/Adobe/en/devnet/acrobat/pdfs/pdfmark_reference.pdf).
    The hidden text route would use FM's Color Views to specify a colour as Invisible. This will make the content visually disappear from the screen (and any output), but FM will still be able to read the contents of any text that is coloured with the Invisible colour(s).
    1. Pick or create a colour that you want to be invisible. [Magenta is usually a good bet and stands out visually].
    2. Set that colour to be invisible in View 1 and visible in View 6. [you can use the shortcut <esc> v 1 and <esc> v 6 to toggle between the views.]
    3. Create a paratag to use for the filename and set the font colour to use the invisible colour.
    3. In the title of each chapter file, drop an anchored frame that is set to be outside of the text frame [so it won't interfere with any other content].
    4. In that AFrame, insert a text frame and use the invisible paratag defined in step 3.
    5. Insert the Filename (Short) variable in that text frame.
    6. Repeat steps for all files to be included in the bookmarks.
    When creating the PDF bookmarks, select only the paratag used for the invisible colour.
    Don't forget to toggle the View to be invisible (i.e. <esc> v 1  - this also works at the book level for all files in the book).

    Is it possible to set up a computer that uses the Sprint Pantech PX-500 (Mobile Broadband Card) to share its connection via Wi-fi? How would I set this up on a WRT54G?
    Thanks so much!

    If you haven't got the router then get WRT54G3G. If you already have a router then use it as a switch/access point, and use windows internet connection sharing or proxy server to share internet.

  • Set tabs in Paragraph Style

    Hi, i am creating paragraph Styles in JavaScript. I looked but found absolutely no info about setting tabs in a paragraph style.
    Am i too tired? Can someone point me in the right direction please?
    Thanks
    Ben

    I have made two InDesign scripts, one that deletes all TabStops from all ParagraphStyles of a Document and one that adds TabStops to all ParagraphStyles of a Document.
    var oDoc = app.documents.item(0);
    // First delete all tabstops
    deleteTabStops(oDoc);
    var iNumberOfTabsToAdd = 3;
    var iTabDistance = 5;
    // Then add tabstops
    addTabStops(oDoc, iNumberOfTabsToAdd, iTabDistance);
    function deleteTabStops(oDocument)
         var iNumberOfParagraphStyles = oDocument.paragraphStyles.length;
         for (var iParagraphStyleItem = 0; iParagraphStyleItem < iNumberOfParagraphStyles; iParagraphStyleItem++) {
              var oParagraphStyle = oDoc.paragraphStyles.item(iParagraphStyleItem);
              if (oParagraphStyle != null) {
                   var iNumberOfTabStops = parseInt(oParagraphStyle.tabStops.length);
                   if (iNumberOfTabStops > 0) {
                        var iLastTabStop = parseInt(iNumberOfTabStops - 1);
                        for (var iLastTabStopItem = iLastTabStop; iLastTabStopItem >= 0; iLastTabStopItem--) {
                             var oTabStop = oParagraphStyle.tabStops.item(iLastTabStopItem);
                             if (oTabStop != null) {
                                  oTabStop.remove();
    function addTabStops(oDocument, iNumberOfTabsToAdd, iTabDistance)
         var iNumberOfParagraphStyles = oDocument.paragraphStyles.length;
         for (var iParagraphStyleItem = 0; iParagraphStyleItem < iNumberOfParagraphStyles; iParagraphStyleItem++) {
              var oParagraphStyle = oDoc.paragraphStyles.item(iParagraphStyleItem);
              if (oParagraphStyle != null && iParagraphStyleItem > 0) {
                   for (iTabNumber = 1; iTabNumber <= iNumberOfTabsToAdd; iTabNumber++) {
                        var sPosition = parseInt(iTabDistance * iTabNumber) + 'mm';
                        var oTabStop = oParagraphStyle.tabStops.add();
                        oTabStop.alignment = TabStopAlignment.CENTER_ALIGN;
                        oTabStop.leader = '';
                        oTabStop.position = sPosition;
    I hope this helps you further.

  • Is possible to assign picture in paragraph style or create bullet?

    I need to  assign Illustrator picture (B&W) before text. Is this possible? Or exist way, how to create from this pictue bullet?
    Thanks

    Jean-Claude is right. IndyFont is a great option for this job. That way you can just use a bulleted paragraph style. Here's a post and video on the topic:
    http://indesignsecrets.com/creating-a-custom-bullet-or-character-with-indyfont.php
    Or you could do a Find/Change to replace bullets which have been converted to regular text with the graphic. Copy the graphic and in the Change To field, select Clipboard Contents.

  • How to set composer to paragraph style

    Hello to all,
          i am trying to change the composer field value of each paragraph style as per user choice . But i am not getting the way to do this.
         Can anyone knows the way of doing this?
    - Kannu

    Thanks Peter.
    But i don't want to set this field manually. i m trying like:
    InterfacePtr<ITextAttributes>origAttrs(paraStyleUIDRef, IID_ITEXTATTRIBUTES);
    const AttributeBossList* originalListofAttrs = origAttrs->GetBossList();
    I also have the composer class id.
    but still,
         originalListofAttrs->ContainsAttribute(composerId[i]);  // composerid : k2Vector<ClassID>
    returns false.
    will this originalListofAttrs contain the information about the composer used in the paragraph style?
    Regards

  • Is it possible to set a default media player for the iPhone?

    I have a music subscription with another company, therefore all my music is played through their app. When I plug my phone into my car to play music, it always opens iTunes and alerts me there is no music there so I have to open the app and select the music. Which is fine, but when the app stops (for whatever reason), the iTunes (which I'm not sure why they don't call iMusic or something equally silly) tries to play any music I have in iTunes. Is there any way to stop this madness? Thanks!

    There is no setting in the iPhone to set another default music player. The default is Music. If you are using another application, you are at the mercy of how that application operates as far as what occurs when it stops or errors out. The car is looking for music to play.

  • Is it possible to set value like commande idente in the metadata?

    Hi,
    I try to set dynamique values in métadata.
    in the log they are set but when i try to see properties from the doc, they don't
    is some one have try to do this.
    did i forgot some thing?
    thx.

    you cannot manipulate the spool or spool form print. you have to get the file and then manipulate its metadata.
    by the way: I don´t understand why do you need to manipulate spool form metadata? if you need to do this because you want to save the form for example, then save it directly, without the spool.
    elaborate on the reasons if you want some more suggestions but I am afraid you want something that is not possible, or maybe my limited knowledge does not let me help you,

  • Is it possible to set identity template dynamically?

    Hi,
    I want to create accounts on LDAP through activesync.
    I set identity template :[uid=$accountId$,ou=$category$,dc=....].
    But I don't want to set category attribute in schema map of resource.
    Is it possible to set $category$ attribute dynamically
    depends on the value of other attribute without defining schema map??
    thanks in advance.

    Hi,
    Absolutely possible, you could either create a field called global.category in your activeSync form or the way I'd do it which is to set the .identity field. In your activeSync form when you assign the LDAP resource to the user view you can a have a field called 'accounts[LDAP].identity' and then use an expansion event within this field to build your DN of the user account on LDAP.

  • How can you create a paragraph style that removes all spaces and forces everything to lower case?

    Hi,
    Is there anyway of using GREP (or some other magical wizardry) to create a paragraph style that automatically removes all spaces and forces words into lower case?
    Strange request i know....I'm wanting to use it for datamerged email addresses.
    Thanks

    so doing it through InDesign is a work around I'm exploring.
    Excel has the 'LOWER' function and the ability to record macros for a quick find/replace on the spaces - so that's definitely a good option if it can't be solved purely in InDesign.
    You can change case via scripting in InDesign. This AppleScript (OSX only) will set the case of the selected paragraph style to lower. It would be possible to add some code that would strip spaces as well:
    tell application "Adobe InDesign CS6"
        activate
            set StyleList to name of every paragraph style of active document
        set myDialog to make dialog with properties {name:"Document Paragraph Styles"}
        tell myDialog
            tell (make dialog column)
                tell (make border panel)
                    tell (make dialog column)
                        make static text with properties {static label:"Choose a Style", min width:150}
                    end tell
                    tell (make dialog column)
                        set myPresetsDropdown to make dropdown with properties {string list:StyleList, selected index:0, min width:150}
                    end tell
                end tell
            end tell
        end tell
        set myResult to show myDialog
        if myResult = true then
            --+1 gets the correct name because list starts at 0
            set myStyle to item ((selected index of myPresetsDropdown) + 1) of StyleList
        else
            return
        end if
        destroy myDialog
        tell active document
            set myStyle to paragraph style myStyle
            repeat with j from 1 to (count stories)
                repeat with i from 1 to (count paragraphs in story j)
                    if applied paragraph style of paragraph i of story j is myStyle then
                        --defines a variable to replace the generic this_text parameter in the handler
                        set SCText to the contents of paragraph i of story j
                        set contents of paragraph i of story j to my change_case_of(SCText)
                    end if
                end repeat
            end repeat
        end tell
    end tell
    on change_case_of(this_text)
        set the_comparison_string to "ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ"
        set the_source_string to "abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz"
        set the_new_text to ""
        repeat with thisChar in this_text
            set x to the offset of thisChar in the_comparison_string
            if x is not 0 then
                set the_new_text to (the_new_text & character x of the_source_string) as string
            else
                set the_new_text to (the_new_text & thisChar) as string
            end if
        end repeat
        return the_new_text
    end change_case_of

  • Apply character or paragraph styles to notes and to do's in Mail ?

    Is it possible to:
    apply character or paragraph styles to notes and to do's in Mail ?
    ALSO:
    I would like to change things like-
    change the color of the default yellow notebook like ruled paper?
    apple character or paragraph styles to notes and to do's?
    Main calender for item related Dates
    The red icon next to the to-do items
    number of columns
    Hold/Insert/Link/Attach additional relevant files?
    Similair to other third party project organizational software such as OmniPlan / Schoolhouse/ KIT (Keep it Together)
    I was also thinking the ability to apply my mail rules to them would further their efficiency. Does anyone know if this is possible?

    In the preferences menu, under "composing" There is an option for "Create Notes & To Do's in:" With the options being "On My Mac" and "[email protected]".
    I did not have this set properly, and changing it meant that selecting text in a note and making a to do gave me the option of putting it in my local calendars.
    However, when I select text from an e-mail it still puts it in my "[email protected]" calendar.
    Partial fix --> Still not exactly what I want to see.

  • Different paragraph styles within a text thread

    Does anybody know if it's possible to apply a different paragraph style to each text box in a text thread? I have three boxes: the first and the last have a small font and I'd like the middle one to have a larger font size.
    If it's not possible, is there an alternative way to do this?
    Thanks,
    Nacho

    Offhand i'd say that what Nacho wants to do will entail having separate text boxes...
    Seems to me that what he's doing is having the text flow from one box to another (column?). Obviously, changing / editing content will cause the text to shift its position.
    Nacho, i think you'll have to do one of the following:
    1/ Manually adjust the font style for the box you want each time you mke a correction
    or
    2/ Set up different, independent boxes (text areas) and style the box the way you want. Obviously changing text will mean changes in the area used by that box...
    Maybe someone else here can help out with a better suggestion...
