Is it possible to set up sql server 2012 alwayson AG for existing scom2012 r2 databases?

we have an existing scom 2012 r2 management group of which all databases are on a single sql server 2012 sp1 instance on a server 2012 r2 server. Now we want to utilize the sql 2012 alwayson feature to improve the HA and DR. Is it possible to add another
sql server 2012 sp1 instance on another server 2012 r2 server and configure the two to create AlwaysOn Availability Group for all three scom databases, and how?
Many thanks

Hi,
Microsoft recommends dedicated SQL clusters for the DBs. If you are trying to achive a common backend SQL for your SC 2012 DBs; check this great post by Cameron Fuller:
http://www.systemcentercentral.com/system-center-2012using-a-common-sql-backend-database-sysctr-scom-scsm/ – it should give you some pointers. Check out the SCOM 2012 sizing helper as well!
We can set scom 2012 databases in SQL cluster and install SCOM Report Service on different SQL Report Server intance. And RS instance cannot be clustered but can be HA. Failover clustering is supported only for the report server database; you cannot run
the Report Server service as part of a failover cluster.

  • Can DPM 2012 R2 backup SQL Server 2012 AlwaysOn enabled databases

    Is it possible to use DPM 2012 R2 for backing up
    SQL Server 2012 AlwaysOn enabled databases ?
    Because if Alwayson configured for any Database , particular database is not available to select for backup.

    Hi,
    Yes, starting with DPM 2012 SP1 SQL AlwaysOn enabled databases can be protected as long as they are not part of sharepoint farm. DPM shows the Availability Groups under Cluster Group.
    You must explicitly add the system account NTAuthority\System or NT AUTHORITY\DPMRA to the Sysadmin group on SQL Server.

    Hi SQLDBA321,
    As your post, SQL Server 2012 or higher version has removed that requirement of virtual local area network (VLAN). For more details, please review this similar blog:

  • SQL server 2012 with SP2 for hosting VMM 2012 R2 DB server

    Hi,
    I would like to implement System Center 2012 R2 Operation Manager, VMM and Configuration Manager.
    I have proposed to my customer two MSSQL Server 2012 Box, one for SCOM/VMM DB server and another one for SCCM (SCCM DB and SCVMM DB cannot be on the same computer).
    But I read on Microsoft web site that only SQL Server 2012 SP1 are supported for VMM DB server and SQL Server 2012 SP2 is supported for SCOM DB server.
    So my question is: Can I deploy one box SQL server 2012 with SP2 for hosting VMM 2012 R2 DB server ?  if not, When SQL Server 2012 SP2 will be supported for VMM 2012 R2 DB server ?
    Regards.

    Hi,
    As per the link this seems to me a known issue. I cannot 100 % say because I have seen/faced this issue with
    SP1 and you mentioned SP2. I would always suggest to install RTM only there is option to un select SP2 during installing.
    Well thank you for reporting I guess Microsoft would take this as feedback.
    Can you share setup log files please just for analysis

  • SQL Server 2012 Edition required for my case??

    Hi,
    I am setting up a SharePoint 2013 BI environment with minimal servers. Below is the configuration:
    1) WFE1 - Front End Server Role
    2) APP1 - Application Server Role with SSRS 2012, SSAS in SharePoint mode.
       SQL Server 2012 BI edition is used here for SSRS and SSAS in SharePoint mode
    3) DB Server  - SharePoint content databases only
    - Can this SQL Server be standard edition ? or does this server also need to have minimum BI features which means it should be BI or Enterprise edition?
    Thanks
    Sandeep
    Sandeep Nakarmi www.snakarmi.me

    Hi Sandeep,
    Thanks for posting your query, Below are the URLs that describe the situation to USE the SQL SERVER Standard or Enterprise Edition for BI features. Kindly go through these URLs once to get the difference.

    http://searchsqlserver.techtarget.com/feature/SQL-Server-Standard-Edition-Why-its-worth-the-cost
    Of course, you will get more features for BI in as sequence SQL Server Edition mentioned below
    Express < Standard < Enterprise
    Moreover, browse the below mentioned URL to enable BI features in SharePoint

  • SQL Server 2012 SP2 support for installation of OM 2012 R2

    Hello everyone,
    according to
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dn281933.aspx SQL Server 2012 SP2 is a supported configuration for SCOM 2012 R2.
    Now I've just happily set up an SQL 2012 R2 Instance with SP1 on Windows Server 2012 R2, applied the SP2 and made the Installation a Windows Server Core. Which worked just great but when I started the Setup for SCOM2012 R2 the installer says my SQL Server
    Version is not supported and will not allow the Setup to continue. I've also upgraded the Reporting Services Database to 2012 SP2 aswell, I guess that would appear on the next page on the installer and cause similar issues.
    I guess it's a configuration value that needs to be changed on the install media to add the SQL Server Version of SP2 as an allowed one.
    Can anyone clarify my theory? If it's not that, is there an updated Media somewhere accessible?

    Hi,
    Please check install logs for further information:
    OpsMgr 2012: My installation failed. What log files do I read and where can I find them?

  • SQL Server 2012 and guest access to the MSDB database

    Hello!
    Today we were given a vulnerability scan on one of our SQL Server 2012 systems and it is flagging the following issue:
    Guest is not disabled on the msdb database.
    I pointed our security team to the following article:
    https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2539091
    My question on this:
    Other than the three cases outlined, are there other possible implications of disabling guest on the msdb database?  Can you point me to a reference that states one way or the other if guest needs to be disabled on msdb?
    I do not like the thought of applying this change blindly and I am afraid of a potential issue caused in some other part of our application that we cannot account for down the road.
    Any info would be much appreciated.
    Thanks!
    -Bill S.

  • SQL Server 2012 Management Studio for Windows XP

    Hi
    I want to install SQL Server Management Studio 2012 on Windows XP. Is there anyway to install or is there any client we can use?
    It is kind of limitation as we can't update OS on our machines.
    Please help.
    Thanks

    SQL server 2012 even SQL client tools  is not supported on Windows XP. But you can install SQL server 2012 management studio on 2012 I guess it would not stop you from istalling but you would run risk of running unsupported feature.
    Download below
    from link
    ENU\x64\SQLManagementStudio_x64_ENU.exe assuming you have 64 bit version

  • Sql Server 2012 Login Failed for user "NT Authority\System"

    I have installed SQL Server on a new server. I have been getting the following error on each of the database in it.
    Login failed for user 'NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM'. Reason: Failed to open the explicitly specified database 'ABC'. [CLIENT: xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx]
    Here is some information on the instance:
    1) Default instance
    2) SQL Server, Sql Server Agent, Sql Server Reporting services are running / log on using a domain service account.
    3) Sql Server Browser is disabled.
    4) SQL Server VSS Writer is running / log on as Local Service.
    5) NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM does exists in Login with just public server roles.
    I ran a trace on login failed and I get:
    ApplicationName: Microsoft Windows Script Host
    and it runs every 15 minutes.
    Help please?

    Hi,
    The error was thrown when the SCOM components connected to the backend SCOM databases.
     You can specify a domain account, grant it the sysadmin role and the error should be gone.
    Also, see the replies in your previous thread:

  • SQL Server 2012 AlwaysON Monitoring using SCOM

    Team,
    We have SCOM deployed and is serving as a monitoring solution for our SQL Estate. However I want some pointers to monitor the health of DBs within Avaialibility Group like DB Sync, log queue etc. Please direct me with the AlwaysOn health parameters that
    can be monitored by SCOM.
    I have confirmed with SCOM admin that we have the latest management pack installed for SQL 2012 and currently its getting monitored. However we are not seeing any alerts though.
    Your inputs are highly appreciated.

  • New Dell Server with OpenManage Essentials adds SQL Server 2012 Native Client to existing SQL Server 2008R2 in SBS 2011

    Had to upgrade my server to new Dell T320. Support wanted me to install OpenManage Essentials which unfortunately installed SQL Server 2912 native client. Now I have 2 sqlserv apps running at the same time.
    Is there a problem with SBS 2011 Standard running two different SQL Server native clients?
    I have no idea why Dell OpenManage did not use the existing 2008R2 native client, but that is the way it is.
    Can I combine or upgrade the database so they all use one and not both?
    Thanks

    I have asked some who similar the SQL product, in general you can install the different version SQL client on the same operation system, but when the OpenManage Essentials
    install a SQL instance on your SQL server, it will automatic upgrade same SQL component to the newer version.
    For example, if your SQL server is 2008r2, you install the OpenManage Essentials built-in SQL instance which version is higher(such as 2012), by default it will automatic
    upgrade the same SQL component to SQL 2012, I don’t similar with the OpenManage Essentials
     tool, I think you can ask DELL® support for the further support.
    Thanks.

  • Is it possible to create a two node cluster with SQL server 2012 STD on node1 and SQL Server 2008 ENT on node2 on a Windows server 2012?

    Hi All,
    Is it possible to create a two node cluster with SQL server 2012 STD on node1 and SQL Server 2008 ENT on node2 on a Windows server 2012?
    aa

    I think you are confused with the way cluster is installed. Installing SQL on cluster is a two step process. On first node you create a new SQL cluster and on second node you need "AddNode" action.
    Same edition media has to be used in above two operation.
    you can install two separate instances with one enterprise and one standard.

  • SQL Server 2012 Failover Cluster Setup

    I have to set up a Lab Test environment for SQL Server 2012 with failover clustering. What are the most cost effective specifications for H\W & S\W.  AFAIK Apart of Enterprise edition, Standard edition can support failover clustering for upto
    2 nodes with one node in passive mode. Somewhere (Here) I got that it is possible to configure SQL Server failover clustering On SQL
    Server 2012 Developer edition. Also Is it possible to use Windows 7 Platform with SQL Server 2012 Developer Edition for configuring Always on Failover Clustering. Although I have researched alot, but puzzled. Seeking for experts advise. Thanks in advance.

    Yes you can configure and install in windows 7.. but make sure you have made all the proper updates as per the microsoft suggestion..

    SQL Server 2012 Developer Edition will continue to be part of the SQL Server 2012 family. The Developer edition provides the same feature set as the Enterprise edition. However, it's licensed per developer and can't be used for production work.

  • Try to do my first XML Schema in SQL Server 2012 Mangement Studio(SSMS2012)-How to execute the xsd and xml files in SSMS2012?

    Hi all,
    I learmed the basic stuff of XML, DTD, DOM, etc. long time ago. Now, I came back to resume my XML journey and try to learn the XML Schemas, XPath and XQuery. I have Microsoft SQL Server 2012 Management Studio (SSMS2012) in our computer network. From
    Page 221 of the old Book "Beginning XML 2nd Edition" written by David Hunter, et.al., (published by Wrox), I copied the name5.xsd and name5.xml :
    <?xml version="1.0"?>
    <schema xmlns=http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema"
    targetNamespace="http://www.wrox.com/name" xmlns:target="http://www.wrox.com/name"
    elementFormDefault="qualified">
    <element name="name">
    <complexType>
    <sequence>
    <element name="first" type="string"/>
    <element name="middle" type="string"/>
    <element name="last" type="string"/>
    </sequence>
    </complexType>
    </element>
    </schema>
    <?xml version="1.0"?>
    <name
    xmlns=http://www.wrox.com/name"
    xmlns:xsi="http://www.wrox.org/2001XMLSchema-instance"
    xsi:schemaLocation="http://www.wrox.com/name name5.xsd"
    title="Mr.">
    <first>John</first>
    <middle>Frizgerald</middle>
    <last>Doe</last>
    </name>
    How can I execute these two files in my SSMS2012 for doing my first XML Schema trial?
    Please kindly help, advise and respond.
    Thanks in advance,
    Scott Chang

    Hi Eric Zhang, Thanks for your nice response.
    1) I saw the CREATE XML SCHEMA COLLECTION (Transact-SQL) and tried  its first example "Create XML schema collection in the database" in my SQL Server 2012 Management Studio (SSMS2012):
    -- Create a sample database in which to load the XML schema collection.
    -- Copied this set of code stsments from Microsoft Library (ms176009)
    -- ColesMS12_20a.sql (saved in C:/Documents/SQL Server Management Studio)
    -- 19 March 2015 1145 AM
    CREATE DATABASE SampleDB
    GO
    USE SampleDB
    GO
    CREATE XML SCHEMA COLLECTION ManuInstructionsSchemaCollection AS
    N'<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-16"?>
    <xsd:schema targetNamespace="http://schemas.microsoft.com/sqlserver/2004/07/adventure-works/ProductModelManuInstructions"
    xmlns ="http://schemas.microsoft.com/sqlserver/2004/07/adventure-works/ProductModelManuInstructions"
    elementFormDefault="qualified"
    attributeFormDefault="unqualified"
    xmlns:xsd="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema" >
    <xsd:complexType name="StepType" mixed="true" >
    <xsd:choice minOccurs="0" maxOccurs="unbounded" >
    <xsd:element name="tool" type="xsd:string" />
    <xsd:element name="material" type="xsd:string" />
    <xsd:element name="blueprint" type="xsd:string" />
    <xsd:element name="specs" type="xsd:string" />
    <xsd:element name="diag" type="xsd:string" />
    </xsd:choice>
    </xsd:complexType>
    <xsd:element name="root">
    <xsd:complexType mixed="true">
    <xsd:sequence>
    <xsd:element name="Location" minOccurs="1" maxOccurs="unbounded">
    <xsd:complexType mixed="true">
    <xsd:sequence>
    <xsd:element name="step" type="StepType" minOccurs="1" maxOccurs="unbounded" />
    </xsd:sequence>
    <xsd:attribute name="LocationID" type="xsd:integer" use="required"/>
    <xsd:attribute name="SetupHours" type="xsd:decimal" use="optional"/>
    <xsd:attribute name="MachineHours" type="xsd:decimal" use="optional"/>
    <xsd:attribute name="LaborHours" type="xsd:decimal" use="optional"/>
    <xsd:attribute name="LotSize" type="xsd:decimal" use="optional"/>
    </xsd:complexType>
    </xsd:element>
    </xsd:sequence>
    </xsd:complexType>
    </xsd:element>
    </xsd:schema>' ;
    GO
    -- Verify - list of collections in the database.
    select *
    from sys.xml_schema_collections
    -- Verify - list of namespaces in the database.
    select name
    from sys.xml_schema_namespaces
    -- Use it. Create a typed xml variable. Note collection name specified.
    DECLARE @x xml (ManuInstructionsSchemaCollection)
    GO
    --Or create a typed xml column.
    CREATE TABLE T (
    i int primary key,
    x xml (ManuInstructionsSchemaCollection))
    GO
    -- ////The following code statements are not used in order to create SampleDB
    -- Clean up
    ---DROP TABLE T
    ---GO
    ---DROP XML SCHEMA COLLECTION ManuInstructionsSchemaCollection
    ---Go
    ---USE Master
    ---GO
    ---DROP DATABASE SampleDB
    It worked and I got the following results:
    1 4 NULL sys 2009-04-13 12:59:13.390 2012-02-10 20:16:02.097
    65536 1 NULL ManuInstructionsSchemaCollection 2015-03-19 11:47:17.660 2015-03-19 11:47:17.660

    http://www.w3.org/XML/1998/namespace
    http://schemas.microsoft.com/sqlserver/2004/07/adventure-works/ProductModelManuInstructions
    But, I don't undertand (i) what SCHEMA COECTION is, (ii) what <xsd:schema targetNamespace=.....</xsd:complexType> are, (iii) How I can specify my "project specific" schema in the Microsoft SCHEMA COLLECTION to check my xml file.
    2) I dived in the XQuery programmimng in SSMS2012 in the last few weeks. I used the examles of Ad-Hoc XML File Query by Seth Delconte (in
    httpS://www.simple-talk.com/content/print.aspx?article=1756) in my SSMS2012. They worked. But I don't understand the (i) Importing XML data using a function, (ii) Using the XQuery contans()
    function to find substrings, (iii)Efficiency comparisons in the article.
    Please kindly help me in enlightening me to resolve the difficulties listed in 1) and 2).
    Thanks,
    Scott Chang
