Is it possible to stop firefox linux sometimes leaving a running process after exit?

I run Firefox 29.0-5.fc19 on a fully updated Fedora 19 OS with the KDE Plasma desktop.
When I want to listen to the BBC iplayer radio service, I open firefox and go to the site http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio4 and click on 'Listen Live' and a pop-out player spawns and begins playing.
If I don't want to browse anything else, I close the main firefox browser leaving the pop-out (child) firefox window playing the live BBC radio stream. But, if I then close this pop-out, I then find I cannot re-start Firefox because error message says firefox is already running.
To restart the browser, I have to use ksysguard to kill the running firefox process - usually around 120,000K in size - first.
I this a known bug?
The only solution seems to be to run another firefox main window before closing the iplayer pop-out player, and then close the main firefox. It's an issue because I don't always remember to go through this rather arcane way of doing things.

"unfortunately this is currently a bug in the current firefox version when you have set your history to be cleared at firefox shutdown"
I'll just change my settings until the bug is fixed.
Should I mark this as solved? It answers my specific question and offers helpful advice so logically yes, even though it refers to an as yet unfixed bug.

  • How do i stop firefox from auto suggesting my email adress after i type the first letter

after the first letter typed it comes up with lots of suggestions even ones i've typed by mistake and i would like to clear these

You can very quickly eliminate the mistyped entries with the down cursor key and use of "Del" key on the selected item ("Shift+Del" on a Mac). So you would just have the ones you want. You do not need to type the first letter you can double-click within the entry box to see all items whether to use or to delete.
That does not answer what you asked. If you only want to suppress that, I don't think that would be possible with Firefox alone, but I also would not think that you would want to suppress all autoform entry because of that.

  • How to Stop Firefox 18 From Restoring the Previous Session After a Crash

Firefox 18.0.1 running on Windows 7
When Firefox crashes, the next time it opens it tries to restore the previous session. I do not want Firefox to restore the previous session after a crash. How do I prevent Firefox from restoring the previous session after a crash?
    Please note:
1- My home page is set to "blank page"
2- I have configured Firefox to NOT remember my browsing history, download history, form fields and passwords.
3- Even in Safe Mode (i.e., with all add-ons disabled), Firefox STILL restores the previous session after a crash.

hello Bulldogger, please try the following in order to switch off sessionrestore completely: enter '''about:config''' into the firefox location bar (confirm the info message in case it shows up) & search for the preferences named '''browser.sessionstore.max_tabs_undo''' and '''browser.sessionstore.max_windows_undo'''. double-click on those entries and change both of their values to '''0'''.

  • Oracle Linux 6.4 installs, runs, and manual shutdown OK ...  but restarts itself after 10 minutes or so

    Hi Guys
Successfully installed Oracle Linux 6.4 operating system , which subsequently runs as expected.
When Oracle Linux 6.4 is shutdown using  standard GUI  system/shutdown ,
it does a clean shutdown and power-off as expected  ....
UNTIL some 10 minutes or so later , when Oracle Linux 6.4 reboots all by itself from a fully powered-down state.
Likewise when Oracle Linux 6.4 is shutdown using  standard command line " shutdown -h now" ,
it does a clean shutdown and power-off as expected  ....
UNTIL some 10 minutes or so later , when Oracle Linux 6.4 reboots all by itself from a fully powered-down state.
Clearly it is NOT desirable to have the operating system able  restart of it's own accord.
A manual shutdown is typically  done for good reason , and the server should remain shutdown.
The previous version, ie Oracle Linux 6.3 did not exhibit this behavior.
When Oracle Linux 6.3 was shutdown, it stayed shutdown
    Question

Does anyone know how to STOP Oracle Linux 6.4 from restarting itself after a successful shutdown ?

Assuming your network interface is eth0, execute "$ ethtool eth0", like below, and indicate what you get for the lines "Supports Wake-on" and "Wake-on.

  • Firefox mobile won't shut down after exit

    Android RAZR v2.3.6
After exiting Firefox, the app stays running in the background and eats my battery. Killed it yesterday in just 4 hours. My phone runs hot while firefox is running and after exiting Firefox.
Doing a complete power off and back on doesn't work, Firefox starts back up and it is in my running apps again. It won't accept a force shut down either.
Yesterday I couldn't get Firefox to shut down until I plugged the phone back into the charger. Then it finally went away on the running apps list.

Not exiting when it goes to the background is normal and expected behavior for an Android application, but using all your CPU and ending up eating your battery sounds like a potential bug.
We released a significantly updated version of Firefox for Android today, so the first thing to try is probably updating to that. If the problem persist, please report a bug in Bugzilla. We'll really need to know at least the version you're using, though.

I have a problem with Firefox when using Proxifier software. When proxifier is runing and I'm browsing web pages with firefox all things is OK. But after exiting proxifier while web pages are still open in firefox, I encounter a problem. In spite of the internet is still connected but my firefox could not open any web pages unless firefox is restarted.
You are kindly requested help me how to solve this problem not to restart firefox.

    Hi,
[http://proxifier.com/ Proxifier] seems to be a transparent proxy. So you could try setting '''No proxy''' in Firefox '''Tools''' ('''Alt''' + '''T''') > '''Options''' > [https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/advanced-settings-browsing-network-updates-encryption Advanced] > '''Network''' > '''Settings'''.
PS: A quick way to restart Firefox is to press [https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Tools/GCLI '''Shift''' + '''F2'''], type '''restart''', and hit '''Enter'''.

That can be a problem with the compatibility.ini file in the Firefox profile folder.
Try to rename (or delete) the compatibility.ini file in the Firefox profile folder to see if that helps.
You can use this button to go to the currently used Firefox profile folder:

    Dear Sirs,
How can I stop Firefox from incessantly interrupting my work by trying to install an update that is incompatible with the Google toolbar which I depend on. Not knowing any better, I trustingly allowed the installation the first time the update notice appeared. It crippled my Internet routines. The toolbars did not work and the bookmarks as well as all the history entries were lost, I have had to reinstall my previous Firefox 4.0.1 and start all over again.

    Hi chib60,
Sorry you are having so much trouble.
Dealing with your last comment first ''"Copy and paste the information from Help > Troubleshooting Information." Why? How? This is ridiculous info - it has no logic or sense to it like most of your advice. ''
If you look to the right you will see a link for 'more system details' that is where such troubleshooting information appears, and it can sometime be helpful.
I am using firefox on a couple of old XPs without problems. Obviously crashing is not expected behaviour, but please try to think of firefox as two separate parts the basic browser and all the additional software as addons and plugins.
It may be rather unrewarding trying to track down the cause of a crash using crash information, the best way forward is probably to start using it in[[safe mode]] and with no plugins installed.

If firefox is recommended by your university, why not try it out on one of their computers, presumably it is installed on the university computers available in the library etc, that should at least convince you that it does work.
I hope the problem is not malware, but if it is all the personal computers you try, a possibility that can not be discounted is that it is some form of malware affecting those computers.
Have you tried Internet Explorer, that will be installed on your XP by default I imagine, does that work ?

  • How do I stop Firefox unloading background tabs?

    Hi there,
Can anyone tell me how to stop firefox for android unloading tabs it thinks are in the background and not being used?
Here's the situation - I had about 5 tabs open in firefox on my Galaxy Note (around 1GB memory) and no other applications open. 4 were from a forum site (few/no graphics, nothing fancy in the page layout, shouldn't have large RAM requirements). I was writing a long post, I opened the fifth tab and performed a google search, dipped into wikipedia to check something, then went back to my post. I went through each of the other tabs to get there as the thumbnails all looked the same. Each one had been unloaded from memory (zombified) and was reloaded fresh, losing all the stuff I had been writing and seemingly knocking the others out of memory. This meant that by the time I found the right tab again what I had been writing was lost.
This behaviour is annoying, not just because you lose form data, but also for slow connections and metered connections it re-grabs the entire page, wasting time and data allowance. The entire point of background tabs (for me) is that the data is there waiting to be read, it is not just a bookmark.
I understand why the developers did this, to save memory on android devices, but it's far too aggressive.
Is there an about:config setting that allows me to stop this behaviour? Is there any way to stop firefox doing this?

I have had this problem for quite some time through many versions of Firefox. It has also done this on the stock browser. Actually very irritating. I often at times will have multiple tabs open (About 3) and sometimes I will be writing something,, stop...then go to another tab to check something on Google or copy sone text...start to go to the other tab, it's still there but the entire page reloads and I lose the message/comment I was writing. I have made a habit of using the copy/paste function for fear of losing all of what I wrote..happened one too many times. And in the case of copying from another page, you just have to hope your text is still there......:/

How do I stop Firefox from auto-focusing on text boxes? Sometimes as a page is loading, I scroll down the page...only to have the page jump back to where there is a text box, with a blinking cursor, after the page is finished loading. It is an annoying feature and I want to turn it off.

Some pages use an onload event to set the focus to a text area or search field.
You can try NoScript to see if that blocks it.

Make sure that Firefox closes properly and that there isn't a hanging Firefox or plugin-container process left in the task manager.
Use "Firefox/File > Exit" (Mac: "Firefox > Quit"; Linux: "File > Quit") to close Firefox if you are currently doing that by clicking the close X on the title bar.

  • Is there a way to stop Firefox from suggesting to add new search engines to my search bar?

Is there a way to stop Firefox from suggesting to add new search engines to my search bar whenever I visit websites that suggest to us to add their search engines?
I searched a lot and couldn't find any help. How to stop websites from suggesting to my Firefox search bar to add their search engines? I don't want to add other search engines other than the ones I organized. I don't want my list to look more distracting and longer.

Firefox doesn't do that. That's either a feature of the website you are visiting or possible Malware on that PC.
A screenshot of that might be helpful. <br />

  • Is it possible to stop APEX using a cached query?

I was hoping that the issue where report regions sometimes show the error: "ORA-06502: PL/SQL: numeric or value error: NULL index table key value" would be fixed in 3.1.1 however it seems not to have been (We have had it several times now). The workaround seems to be to change the query slightly such as selecting NULL as an additional column and then hiding that column.
This obviously only works AFTER the issue has occured, ie, after we have received a complaint from someone!
Is it possible to stop APEX using the cached version of some queries altogether? The ones we are calling are quite simple and so will not give that much overhead.
    Thanks.

I've actually found several threads on this from the past:
ORA-06502: PL/SQL: numeric or value error: NULL index table key value
http://kr.forums.oracle.com/forums/thread.jspa?threadID=644172&tstart=120 (This thread states the problem has been fixed however it would appear either it hasn't or there is a similar bug elsewhere.)

  • Is it possible to stop the continual redraw

Hi I was wondering if it was possible to stop Lightroom continually redrawing images, especially when switching to Develop mode.
I have tried rebuilding all the 1:1 Previews - this seems to help the redraw problem in Library mode - both for thumbs and when double clicked - but not in Develop mode.
It doesn't seem to make sense that when I select a photo in the Library thumbs mode, then hit D (for Develop), I see the photo enlarged and clear for a split second, then Lightroom starts to redraw it, and eventually produces the image I saw for a split second. It's like it has the information but doesn't use it. This sometimes happens when in "Fit" view, especially with heavily cropped photos, and nearly always seems to happen in "1:1" view.
I have also tried optimising catalogs - this seems to make little or no difference.
Computer setup: early Intel iMac Lightroom 2.2, OS 10.5.6, photos on external drive, catalogue on iMac, Canon Raw files (.CR2) about 20 to 30 Mb each,
    LR Preferences:
file extension:dng, jpeg preview:medium size, compressed (lossless) ticked, embed original raw file not ticked, Cache on imac, max size 12 Gb (should this be bigger maybe?).
Catalogue settings: Standard Preview size: 1680 pixels, Preview Quality: High, Automatically Discard 1:1 Previews: after 30 days.
Many thanks for any help with this

Well thanks for the quick answers! At least I won't be wondering if there's some setting I can change.
Of course I understand why the image should show changes made in Develop mode in "real-time" - and, in fact, that works fine with no delay, if I increase the contrast, for example.
What I don't undestand is why without making any changes, on opening the picture in Develop, it shows the picture, then it goes all blocky ("big pixels") for a few seconds, then it goes back to normal
