My partner and I both have iPhones, iPads etc but enjoy different music. We only have 1 pc. Is it possible to have 2 seperates iTunes libraries run by the same computer? Our library is currently on an external hard drive but I would also like to know if it would be possible to run an additional library from the computers in built hard drive?

Yes, you can have multiple libraries on a computer. A neat route is to create an account for each library, that way the standard locations can be maintained.
By default a new library will be created on your computer internal drive - you can treat the external hard drive as a source and copy the Song files to the new iTunes Music folder, once copy is complete use Add Folder from the file menu to load the Songs into the new iTunes library.

give them distinct names. launch iTunes while holding the option (⌥) key, click on choose library when prompted, and select the iTunes folder of the desired library.

Load the library which doesn't contain the songs and drag them into the open iTunes application window. If you need to move them between different computer user accounts, put them into /Users/Shared/.

I would like to know if this is possible, my kids currently run iTunes with the music folder being on the G drive, my home server, which has around 17,000 songs. They have expressed an interest in being able to take their laptops to their friends houses with about 1k-2k songs loaded into their own library and stored locally on their machine. Is it possible to have to iTunes libraries, one which contains the information for storing the music on the G drive (network music drive), and one which contains the 1k-2k songs stored locally in the music folder in My Documents. I have tried using the sharing feature of iTunes but since the server does not run iTunes that shared library is not up-to-date. Kids computers are running Windows XP with the latest version of iTunes.

They can still do it. The songs on the G drive will show up with ! marks next to them at their friends' houses.

Yes. If you want separate iTunes accounts, the easiest way is to set up 2 users on the computer, each with their own iTunes library.
If the two phones share the same iTunes account this is not necessary.

When the iPods belong to different people, there are basically three ways of using multiple iPods on a computer and these involve:
a) Sharing a single iTunes library
b) Creating Multiple Libraries in a single user account
c) Creating multiple user accounts.
Note: When you are sharing an iTunes library, you don't have to set each iPod to update in the same manner, you can mix and match from the options below as each iPod has it's own update settings
Sharing a Library and/or User Account
If you want to share the one library, you can set either or all of the iPods so that they only get updated with only certain playlists (you can update from more than one if you wish): iPod - Syncing Music
Choosing the update option "Sync Music - Selected playlists" allows you to create a playlist specifically for the iPod and drag the tracks you want into it. If you tire of the list and want to change it, you just add or remove the songs you don't want. The ones you take out out remain in the library to be used some other time if you choose. Or you can choose to update any or all of the iPods manually and just drag whatever content you want to them: Managing content manually on iPod

Multiple Libraries
It's also possible to have multiple libraries in a single account. To create or access a second (or more) library, hold down the Option key (or Shift key in Windows) when launching iTunes 7. In the resulting dialogue you will get the option to create a new library or navigate to the other Library.
Note: You can only have one Library open at a time and iTunes will default to the last library opened if you don't use the keyboard command to choose one. This can prove tricky when using multiple iPods, if you don't use the keyboard command you can risk syncing to the wrong library: Using multiple iTunes libraries -Windows
Separate User Accounts
Another option is to create a separate User account for each person on your PC or Mac. Different accounts by definition would give you completely separate libraries. Each account has it's own iTunes folder, Library and iTunes Music folder and you load it with CDs etc just as you did with your original one. The iPod can be set to update however the owner chooses, sync all, manual or sync specific playlists
