Is it possible to switch software instruments in mid-track?

Or do you just have to continue the part in a different track with the new instrument?

Thanks, I figured as much. I was hoping there might be a way to do it with MIDI program changes (you can switch instruments if you're driving, say, the QuickTime synthesizer) but that's doubtful, too. Oh well, making another track isn't so bad!

  • Is it possible to automate software instrument parameters in a MIDI region? And alias the region with the automation?

I am trying to track down a detail about how automation works in Logic Pro X.
What I want to know is:
    1. Can I draw control-point curves (and smoothly bend them) in a MIDI region to automate a software instrument parameter (and/or smart controls)?
    2. Can a region containing this automation be aliased and reused around the timeline (without the automation points being duplicated)?
If this is possible, can someone please post a couple of screenshots - a MIDI region with MIDI Draw automating (for example) the cutoff of an ES M, and screenshots of aliases around the timeline?
    thanks!!

First, I'd recommend going to Track>other>new with same instrument.  This gives you a blank lane to make a region with no notes.
Now, there are two strategies: do some track automation and then convert it to region. You can go into the local view menu and find the option to view MIDI automation and still adjust it.  Now you can make aliases of that region. You need to be careful of accidentally writing new track automation, which is easy to do and can happen if you have 'move automation with regions' on for instance.  If you make sure and delete all the track auto for this parameter you should be good (the line should be barely visible black, if it is highlighted in color, that means there is at least one active node at the beginning).  If the parameter freaks out, instead of following your curve, you can bet there is track automation fighting with the region automation, you might need to tell the automation menu in the track header to show the parameter in question.  None of this is a big deal and after doing it once you'll see.
The other strategy is to assign a controller to a parameter (or use the quick MIDI things on certain instruments - you mentioned ES2, which has that) and you can use the hyper draw in the piano roll.  The view tip from the first strategy still works so you can edit the automation in the arrange.  I prefer the first strategy because the knob you are automating will still move.
If you go to audio tuts plus (something like that) you can find a tut on the first method that's a few years old, and from Logic 9.  Basically the same, you just have to look through different menus for everything.

  • Won't let me save as archive nor change software instrument to audio track

You were able to do both of these before iLife 09. Also, I see the option to archive, but it won't let me select it. Anyone?

One: Locking a track mixes it down to an audio track (hidden in the project package in a folder called "Freeze Files") that is being used on playback, so the computer doesn't have to render the software instruments.
Two: If by "sound modules" you mean the software instruments - no, they are not included in a "Save as Archive" file. As I said, it's the audio loops and copied regions. Try adding a blue audio loop to your song, and the "Save as Archive" option will appear!

  • Can software instruments recognize MIDI program changes?

I'm trying to send program changes from my Oxygen 49 (blue). I see them register in the transport window in Logic but the patch doesn't change. For example, trying to scroll through different instruments in the sampler would be much faster than having to use the mouse if I could use the + & - buttons on the Oxygen.
All other control surface functions work fine using M-Audio DirectLink—transport, faders, track selection, etc. But not program changes. Any info would be appreciated. I've contacted M-Audio support but they were not helpful--horrible phone support.

Most (if not all) of Logic's plugins do NOT receive program changes, the EXS24II can be setup to use two program changes as a toggle for "Next Instrument" and "Previous Instrument". Set Next Instrument to Prg change 1, Set Next Instrument to Prg change 2.
This way you can select Prg change 1 to select the next instrument, then go back to Prg change 00 on the Oxy49, select PG change 1 again to go to the next instrument.
    And so on...
Use the EXS "Options" button, then select Preferences to set this up.

  • Using External Software Instruments

How do I assign an external software instrument to a track in Logic?  Thank you.

Create a Software Instrument track.. and then left click and hold on the Software Instrument (SI) button.. (The one just above the I/O label in the Track Inspector on the Left hand side of Logic's Layout.)
You will find all of Logic's Apple SI's there along with any 3rd party SI's you may have installed too, just below Apple's SI's.

  • 2 midi tracks routed through the same instrument instance

    Hi folks,
I'm a new Logic user, and I expect this is a pretty stupid question but it's completely stumped me. Is it possible to route 2 (or more) midi tracks through the same instance of a virtual instrument? I am running Logic 8.02 with BFD2, and I'm trying to lay down a drum track bit by bit. On my first midi track I've finger-drummed a bass and snare pattern and I now want to add a hi hat and cymbals. I'm using the same kit, so there should be no need to open another instance of BFD2. I could record onto the existing track, but ideally I'd like to keep each drum / cymbal on a separate track.
Any help would be much appreciated!
    Cheers.

To add to what SC said, one concept that gets missed by new users is that any track and be assigned to any environment object.
So if you have an arrange track that's currently assigned to audio channel 1, you can control-click on it, select "Reassign track object" and choose a different audio channel 1.
So you can have as many tracks as you want all assigned to the same audio object, and this is a killer feature in Logic many people rely on, and that other DAWs don't tend to have.

  • Is it possible to use software limits on 7354 board when switching control modes from open to closed or closed to open loop?

Is it possible to use software limits on 7354 board when switching control modes from open to closed or closed to open loop?

    Hello Richard,
When you say 'open loop' and 'closed loop', are you referring to running the application in position and torque mode? If not, how exactly are your controlling a servo motor in open loop?
In closed loop mode, the encoder values will be used as reference and the motion VIs can be used to configure the software limit as required. Are you currently losing the software limits? If so, how exactly are you losing these values? I am not sure I understood what exactly is happening with software limits in your program, so any more information on this would be useful.

  • Copying an entire software instrument track from one project to another

    Hello,
Is it possible to copy or import one entire software instrument track from one GB 3.0.2 project to another? At the moment I've got to copy a region from one project, open another project, paste it in the 2nd project, and open the other one again (which appears to close the 2nd project) to copy the second region. This is incredibly cumbersome because I can't have both projects open at the same time.
Has anyone found a less tiresome method to do this?
    Thanks

The easiest work-around I can imagine is to join all regions of the track and copy that. Another option is to freeze the track, which will turn it into normal audio. You might also add your MIDI parts to the library. That will avoid the need to switch between projects, but does require one or two more actions.

  • Playing real instruments with software instruments

Hey, I've been using logic for years but have never tried playing with a real instrument until now. When i connect my guitar Logic recognizes it and changes the driver to unknown USB device, but there is no sound since built-in input isn't selected and the instrument records but i can't hear it until i switch it back. How do you play real instruments with software instruments? Should be pretty simple. Thanks.
    - Sean

Okay… the way Logic works is to use the same device for both Inputs & Outputs (there is a way round this, but let's not go there just now. First person to say 'Aggregate Device' gets thumped!).
So when you choose your device (usefully known as "Unknown USB Device") in Audio MIDI Setup, this means that you are no longer using your Built-in Inputs & Outputs — because that's the alternative.
Which means you won't hear anything through your speakers connected to your Mac. To hear an Output, you would have to connect your monitors/headphones/etc. to your device.
    Furthermore:
    _Auto Input Monitoring_
If Auto Input Monitoring is switched on, you will only hear the input signal during the actual recording—before and afterwards, you’ll hear the previously recorded audio on the track, while the sequencer is running. This helps you to judge punch in and punch out points when punch recording. If Auto Input Monitoring is switched off, you will always hear the input signal.
_To switch auto input monitoring on, do one of the following:_
    • Choose +Options > Audio > Auto Input Monitoring+ from the main menu bar (or use the +Toggle Auto Input Monitoring+ key command).
    • Control-click the Record button in the Transport, and turn on the +Auto Input Monitoring+ setting in the pop-up menu.

  • Using real instruments to control software instruments

I recently bought the Apogee Duet to play my guitars and keyboard directly into Garageband (and soon Logic Studio). My problem is that I haven't been able to figure out how to control software instruments using real instruments. For example, is there way for me to connect my Piano Keyboard through Duet into my computer, but use it to play software tracks like strings and horns, etc? I would like to do this without using MIDI, since I just spent $500 on the Duet. Is this possible, or is the only way to control software instruments through an external instrument by using MIDI? Thanks so much for any help....

Assuming your keyboard requires an external MIDI interface (some have MIDI interfaces onboard), you can pick one up pretty cheaply - for example, M-Audio's Midisport or Uno are decent and inexpensive.

  • GarageBand: missing software instruments & loops won't download

    Hi,
Recently I've bought a 15' MacBook Pro with OS X version 10.8.3 installed on it(and I've updated it to version 10.8.4) and tried to download [missing software
instruments and loops] for GarageBand, but that update for the additional GarageBand contents couldn't be found on App Store's update page even after trying
several times. Does anybody have a solution or similar experience? Answers would be greatly appreciated!

I recently had the same problem when I upgraded to Garageband '11.  There are many posts and answers about this issue on the forum, but the one that worked for me was also the simplest solution.  When you get to the Updates window on the App Store and it says it doesn't find any updates, hit ⌘-R to reload.  When I did that, the additional instruments and loops download appeared in the Updates window and I was able to download them.
If that doesn't work for you, search this forum.  There are many more possible solutions.  Good luck!

  • Can I use a MIDI keyboard as an input device for a software instrument?

I have a Casio CTK-2100 that I am currently playing around with in Logic Pro 9. It can record and playback the different instruments fine using MIDI tracks. But I was wondering if it is possible to use the keyboard as an input device for a software instrument instead of the "Step Input Keyboard".
Is it? If so, how do I set it up?

Yes, the terminology can be a bear, many, many years ago when I started using Logic the manuals were written completely by the programmers, while they were quite humorous in places the were also really hard to understand so I learned/realized.. you can't really do anything so wrong it's going to destroy your computer so why not go ahead and experiment. I learned the basics of Logic without a manual, months later when I went back to find some some details I could figure out the manual made a lot more sense.
Logic has been somewhat Appleized but it's not really an Apple program, it was purchased almost as developed as it is now... a lot of the additions a fluff to make it easier to understand for new users while at the same time there are some real improvements.
This is personal opinion: With all of the forums/online tutorials...etc...etc. It seems users are learning (but not understanding) the same things, plus everyone wants to use it right away so nobody takes a deep breath and investigates on their own. Logic is a deep, deep program, while learning don't be afraid to go off on a tangent and explore the program without any other input, it can actually be inspirational. One other thing good about the manual or "Online Help", in looking up a function you will invariably come across a related concept that will provide further insight.
    And..... have fun.

  • Control only the software instrument of one channel strip at a time with one Controller

    Hi people,
I have a Nord Lead 2 and a Korg Nanokontrol and I want to use these as Midi controllers in the following way, but don't really know how to set up the system:
I have 4 Channelstrips and each has the free software instrument Tyrell N6 inserted. I have the opportunity to change the volume of each channel strip with my faders on the Nanokontrol which works fine and gives me the opportunity to make layers and change also to only use one sound at a time. And this works fine. However, now I want to have the opportunity to change the parameters of each Tyrell with my Nord Lead. But with 4 channelstrips each with a Tyrell N6 I want to have the opportunity to only somehow manipulate only one instance of Tyrell at a time and change the channelstrip for which the Nord Lead manipulates the Tyrell. Is there an opportunity in Mainstage to do that?
Hope it is understandable. Help would be really much appricated. Looking forward to hearing from you.

    Hi DaCaptain,
Thank you very much for your answer. I tried it yesterday, but it doesnt really work for me to be honest. The thing is that I really wanna stick to one patch, so that I can have like one patch for each song.
However, if you might be interested I found a way to do it yesterday on my own. This is how I have done it:
    In Layout-Mode
    - Create Controls for each instance of Tyrell. For my purpose I created 4 times:
                 - controlls for the Filter Section
                 - controls for ADSR1
                 - controls for ADSR2
    - So you have 4 Sections of controllers in Layout Mode. Each meant to controll one Tyrell Instance
    - Now each section gets its own Midi Channel. So all the controllers of section 1 respond to MIDI Channel 1 and the controllers of section 2 respond to MIDI Channel 2 and so on.
    - Now you tell the Nord Lead that it should send via MIDI Channel 1 and you assign the Cutoff-Controller of the Nord Lead to the controller (the one of the first section) that is suppose to control the cutoff of the first Tyrell. And you proceed this way until all the controllers of the first sections are assigned. Then you swith to MIDI Channel 2 on the Nord Lead and assign the Cutoff-Controller of the Nord Lead to the controller (the one of the second section) that is suppose to control the cutoff of the second Tyrell. And here again you proceed this way until all the controllers of the second sections are assigned. Then you go on with the third and fourth section taking MIDI Channel 3 and 4.
    In Edit-Mode
    - In Edit Mode now you of course assign the controllers to the functions in each Tyrell
    Result
    - Now you can switch between the MIDI Channels on the Nord Lead. This is quiet easy because you can assign a MIDI Channel to one of four buttons on the Nord Lead.
    - So if you switch to MIDI Channel 1 you can controll the functions of the first Tyrell and if you switch to MIDI Channel 2 you can controll the functions of the second Tyrell. And all in one Patch with only one controller which is even from the nineties. I find this really great. The only problem is that the Layout might get really messy, if you try to maybe control more functions of each Tyrell. And I really think maybe Mainstage in future could give us the opportunity to create bigger Layouts - maybe with different Windows or something.
Hope you might find this interesting or even helpful.
    See you

  • In Logic Pro 9, how many midi controlled software instruments do you get...?

In Logic Pro 9, how many midi controlled software instruments do you get and is there possibility to download more as it says 40 on the programs info on the Mac Store, as i intend to compose on it but with only 40 instruments it's not really worth it.
So i was just wondering whether it let you download more for free.
    Thanks for reading
    ~Matt

Yes: I too am interested in the software instruments available in Logic Pro: one has to be a bit wary of the jam packs because there don't seem to be many solo instruments included. But I looked at the Logic screen in an Apple store the other day, and it worked like GarageBand in
this respect: you created a new track choosing the software instrument option and a whole lot of instruments came
up in a column on the right: lots of solo wind instruments, plenty of keyboards and guitars of course and not very many solo strings, only one violin, in the world music subsection under Irish fiddle. Yehudi Menuhin
where are you when we need you?
What I've been trying to find out is which part of the purchase does this long list of software instruments arrive with, because it's basically the only reason
I'm interested - I get on fine with gb but it
Just hasn't got enough instruments, and as I say the jam packs don't seem
to resolve this ? Or do they? Could someone please help
    me with this?

  • Is there a possibility to switch off in Firefox the functionality of quick launch key (additional key in laptop) that cause to run the homepage

    Dear Support,
Is there a possibility to switch off in Firefox the functionality of quick launch key (additional key in laptop) that cause to run the homepage. I would like to switch this functionality off, because the key is malfunctioned and always pressed. I was able to switch off the functionality of this key in Windows system by deleting entries in registry Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\AppKey. After this change, when somebody works in system the Firefox is not running is not launching all the time. But when I open the Firefox the setting in system is overwritten and when I am using it Firefox returns to the homepage instantly. I think because of this quick launch button. I tried to change settings in about:config like browser.startup.homepage, browser.startup.homepage_override, startup.homepage_override_url,… this is for Firefox version is 10.0.2
    Thank you
    Best Regards

    Hi,
    Thank you for your interesst.
This internet button key is one of buttons located above the keyboard near the power button. What I have achieved to this moment was to stop it functionality in the system by clearing the entries in the fields Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\AppKey\17\ShellExecute and entry
    Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\AppKey\7\Association that was http
After these changes in registry the behavior of the button was suppressed, the Firefox stopped to start unexpectedly all the time – so in system it works. But the problem is still when I have opened Firefox. Every time when you want to surf in internet – the homepage is activated also unexpectedly. I wrote this post with intention to ask if there is a possibility to switch off the functionality of this quick launch button in Firefox. Because I assume Firefox overrides the system setup – this I have made in registry. I tried with some option changes in about:config but without success. And I know that for older versions of firefox was some option in about:config do disable_quick launch button. But in 10.0.2 I couldn't locate it.
    Thank you
    Regards
    Lukasz
