Is it possible to take a wireless signal into my time capsule, and use the LAN connections?

Hello everyone,
My wife has a clinic behind our house, that does not currently have a hard wired ethernet connection.  We are wondering if we can use our old 2nd generation time capsule to pick up the wirless signal from our home, and then use the LAN connections on the back to tie her credit card/debit machine into?  If we can't use the time capsule is there anything out there that would allow us to accomplish this?
Thank you for your time

We are wondering if we can use our old 2nd generation time capsule to pick up the wirless signal from our home, and then use the LAN connections on the back to tie her credit card/debit machine into?
Yes....IF.....the wireless network in the house is provided by another Apple wireless router. In that case, the Time Capsule can be configured to "extend a wireless network". When it does this, the Ethernet ports on the Time Capsule are enabled as well.
If the wireless network in the house is provided by a third party wireless router, there is a special feature only present on the AirPort Express that would allow it to be configured to "join" the wireless network. When it does this, the Ethernet ports are enabled on the Express.
As you might imagine, the Ethernet signal is only going to be as good as the quality of the wireless signal connection between the house and the clinic. As a test, take a laptop out to the clinic and see if you can get a good Internet connection that way. If you can, then an AirPort should work well for you.

  • I set up time capsule and now can't connect wirelessly

I got home with my new Apple and Time Capsule last Friday and was unable to connect to the net. I called Cox cable and they came out and got me up and running. The yellow light on the Tine Capsule kept blinking but I was able to connect and thought it was just a glitch.
Today I added a printer and, after a few headaches, got it up and running. Then I tried to set up the automatic backup process and thought I was OK. Now, however I can't connect wirelessly at all. I keep getting the message "None of your preferred networks are available." I have a neighbor with a wireless network and it sees that, so something is going on. I also am able to connect directly to my modem and get connected. The yellow light is still blinking!
I have tried re-starting the computer, turning off both the modem and Time Capsule, but nothing works. I am beginning to think I have a defective Time Capsule but the store I got it from is two hours away, so if anyone can offer a suggestion, I would be most grateful.

I just went through the same deal. I'm not exactly sure how I did it, but I eventually got it to work, and even have Back to My Mac in play. For the next ten minutes, anyway.
So here's the deal. These are some of the things I did that you might try.
First, there is a big issue regarding how you presently connect to the internet - DSL modem? Cable modem? A dixie cup and a piece of thread? Time Capsule is both a router and a wireless base station, so whatver you're using now might be performing router duty as well, and screwing things up. I replaced my AT&T 2Wire device (modem, router, and wireless base station in one box) with a DSL modem. Oh, and when I was prompted, I assigned the public IP address for my broadband connection (the one that begins with 70.xxx.xxx.xxx) to the TIme Capsule, instead of having Time Capsule get one of those 192.xxx.x.xxx or 10.x.x.x IP addresses from DHCP.
The modem has to operate in "bridge mode." Whatever the heck that means.
Also, in configuring time capsule, I initially used an ethernet cable attached to a computer (in this case, my MacBook Pro). It seemed easier to get it going that way, and once it had managed to connect, it made it easier to get on just using the wireless connection.
When you're prompted, you want to create a new network, although it might be helpful to take it one step at a time and keep your present network up and running and let Time Capsule join that deploying - initially - just the wireless backup capability.
Oh, and regarding restarting all the hardware, I did that too. But with Time Capsule, if you're not already doing it, you should not just restart the device, but do a reset. On the back of the device if you look carefully toward the right you will see a little pinhole. Get a paper clip and depress the little button inside that little pinhole until the front light begins to blink rapidly. That resets Time Capsule and was the only way I could get the thing to bite at the beginning.
So much for Mac's just working. Although once they do . . . .

  • Can I turn off the wireless and use the wired connections at the same time?

Can I turn off the wireless and use the wired connections at the same time?
This is to avoid transmission when I work without the need for wireless

Yes, you can. Just open the web interface of the router. On your browser type the IP address of your router, usually http://192.168.1.1 go to wireless tab and disable it.

  • I have a Airport Extreme that is dropping the wireless signal alot (several times a day). The green light will go amber but the internet service (ethernet cable) will still be fine. The wireless icon on devices with go away.

I have a Airport Extreme that is dropping the wireless signal alot (several times a day) The green light will go amber, but the internet service is still ok if your using an ethernet cable directly plugged in. When the light goes amber all devices that is using wireless will lose there wireless icon. The only way to get the green light back is to unplug the Airport device and replug it back in. I tried the reset on the back but still no luck. What is the fix?

Let's see if I can get this straight.
You have an Airport Extreme base station that is set to "Create a wireless network" and you have the box checked for "allow this network to be extended"....
Then you have an Airport Express that is set to "Extend a wireless network" which you selected the name of your network in the box...
    Correct?
    See this Apple document:

The wireless unit on the right of the diagram can be either of the newer Apple base stations.

  • Macbook low wireless signal strength with Time Capsule

    Hi,
I have a macbook (2,1) 1,83 Ghz connected to my brand new Time Capsule 1 TB in 802.11b/g/n compatible mode. I have also my iPhone hooked up to my Time Capsule through wireless network.
I have issues on the macbook with the wifi, sometimes it drops and sometimes it is really slow.
So I just checked on Time Capsule under the "Wireless Clients" tab in "Logs and statistics" to see the signal strength I get.
I put both iPhone and macbook next to the Time Capsule, here are the results of the signal strength:
I get a signal strength in dBm of :
    -27 for the macbook !!
    66 for the iphone !!
    Here is a screenshot: http://img519.imageshack.us/img519/3853/timcacapsulehm6.png
Please help, I think I have a problem either with macbook or Leopard 10.5.2 ??

The Time Capsule will provide more wireless signal coverage if you connect it permanently to the Virgin modem/router using a wired Ethernet connection. Ethernet cabling can be run up to 300 feet or 100 meters with virtually no loss, so you should be able to locate the Time Capsule where it will be needed.
Configure the Time Capsule to create a new network that uses the same wireless network name and password as the Virgin wireless network and you will have, in effect, one "big" network.

  • How can I expand my wireless network with a Time Capsule and Airport Express?

My entire house is wired for ethernet access (2 floors).  I have a Time Capsule on the 2nd floor that reaches the entire house except for one room.
In this one room I have an ethernet port plugged into an Airport Express.
The problem I encounter is that I have two separate wifi networks with two separate names.  I realize I can extend the wireless network on the 2nd floor to the 1st floor but I can only do this wirelessly to my knowledge, and the entire problem is that the signal doesn't reach the front room.  Also, there is really no place in-between that the AE can be placed to extend the reach.  The building is concrete and steel, I think that has a lot to do with the problem.
My question is: Can I have two wireless routers (connected to the same home network via ethernet) broadcast the same wifi network?  I also have a SONOS system that further complicates things, I'm afraid.  Would it help if I drew some sort of diagram?
    Thanks!

Your network is not working as you describe.. or I have misunderstood the layout..
What is the broadband type? Modem is where? What is the main router?
From your screen shots the main router is the airport express that covers one room which seems wrong.
Why isn't the TC the main router? or both bridged.. if you go back and look at the apple document.. one or both apple routers are in bridge mode..
You are having issues with setup .. half of which is caused by v6 airport utility.
What OS are you running? Please install 5.6 utility.. do it.. do it now!!
    Easy for Lion.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1482
    Messy but possible for ML.
How to load 5.6 into ML.
    1. Download 5.6 for Lion.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1482
Click to open the dmg but do not attempt to install the pkg.. it won't work anyway.
    2. Download and install unpkg.
    http://www.timdoug.com/unpkg/
Run unpkg on the desktop.. it is very simple.. drag the AirPortUtility56.pkg file over to unpkg.. and it will create a new directory of the same name on the desktop.. drill down.. applications utilities .. there lo and behold is Airport utility 5.6 .. drag it to your main utilities directory or just run it from current location.
You cannot uninstall 6.1 so don't try.. and you cannot or should not run them both at the same time.. so just ignore the toyland version.. the plastic hammer.. and start using 5.6.. a real tool.

  • Can i put my ethnet internet cord in time capsule and use it as wireless internet?

    HGjnv

The Wireless Router portion uses standard protocols that will work with ANY computer using standard protocols, including Windows, Mac OS, and Linux.
The shared Printing features are well supported by Mac OS, and may be partially supported by Windows and other Operating Systems.
The Time Capsule features require support from the Operating System in your individual computers, and at this writng, I believe only Mac OS X supports these features.

  • Is it possible to store music on a time capsule and have the music linked to iTunes without taking up space on the computer?

I have a macbook air and a time capsule. I want to store my music on the time capsule without having to transfer the files to my computer to link them to itunes. Is this possible?
    Thanks

Yes, but before going into details, it is not a good idea.  You should always have a backup drive and the Time Capsule (TC) serves as that.  If you place all your iTunes files only on the TC, when the TC drive fails (as it definitely will someday) all your files will be lost because you don't have a backup.*  The solution is to buy yet another external hard drive either as a backup drive or a storage drive.  I believe these can be attached to a TC but I don't have one so I don't know the details.
Options for remote iTunes storage>  One is to put only some media on the external.  Not such a good idea and tricky to manage, but some want music on their comptuer and bulky movies on an external.  Another option is to keep only media on the external and your library files on the internal.  No real advantage unless you have a family with shared media but individual iTunes libraries, plus it can be tricky to do future moves.  The best solution is to move your whole iTunes library to the external.  Drag the whole iTunes folder to the external.  Start iTunes with the option key held down and guide it to the library.itl file (the library file) in the folder on the external.  Note, the external drive will always have to be attached before starting iTunes or iTunes will revert to putting a library on your internal drive.  If you forget, quit iTunes and re-do the option key start.
*Don't rely upon being able to redownload from Apple.  It's a convenience, not a backup. Some things can't be redownloaded, and all Apple stores is media, not individaual library files which is what you see when you open iTunes.

  • I created a wireless network with my Time Capsule but would like to connect this network to a WiFi Hotspot for Internet Access

I have created a Wirelss Network at home with the Time Capsule and would like to connect this network to the Internet.
I can't use LAN Cable to connect to it anything becasuse I usually use the WiFi that runs through my building.
Can I connect the Time Capsule to the WiFi hotspot somehow so that all computers on my network have Internet access and if so, what do I need?
I need this done because the computers can only be connected to either the WiFi network or to my Time Capsule Network at any given time.
Or is there a way to be connected to both networks simultaneously?
I have two PC's and two Macs.
Thank you for any support and I apologise for my ignorance. I am not too good with networking.
I have tried the silliest of things like connecting a router to the TC only to then realise that the TC had an inbuilt router.
I tried connecting a USB WiFI adapter to the USB Port on the TC but it doesnt detect it that way apparently.
    Please help!

hi i cant get my ipad to show netflix when i plug my ipad 3 into the flat screen hd tv? can anybody be able to help me?

I do not know if Netflix makes a difference.  One approach is to use Apple's Digital AV adapter.  It requires that your TV have an HDMI input.

  • Running a network with Time Capsule and Netgear router - is it possible?

We have an iMac and a Toshiba laptop. I was wondering if it was possible to have a wireless network with a Time Capsule and our Netgear DG834G router. We live in a solid brick house and the Netgear router is upstairs and we find we get very little, if any reception from downstairs. We have just purchased the Time Capsule and we were hoping to move the Netgear downstairs and have the Time Capsule upstairs to get reception all over the house. Is running a network like this possible, and if it is, how do we do it. Both the iMac and the laptop need to be able to connect. Thanks in advance.

  • Trying to Connect Wireless Epson Printer with Time Capsule

Greetings. I am a regular Mac user and using Mac for several years now. However, I am a new to network administration. I have a Linksys wireless router that syncs our 5 Macs (one iPad-1 iMac and three MacBook Pros), plus 4 Windows PC's we have in our network. I recently decided to purchase a Time Machine, and further our use of Apple technology in wireless devices. I want to back up all my computer's files to Time Machine and use the Airport Extreme functions of Time Machine while discontinuing the use of my LinkSys router. However, I can't get my Epson WorkForce 600 to wirelessly connect to Time Capsule in order to use the scanner & fax functions. Connecting the printer by USB enables the printer function, but disables all other functions of the printer (fax-scan, etc.).
I tried downloading new Epson drivers and couldn't get some of them to install. This time My iMac wouldn't install the .dmg files. I tried opening the .dmg file and installing. The pop up box requiring my administrator password, kept flashing when I tried to enter my password. Since I couldn't get the .dmg files to install, my plan to update Epson driver's didn't work. Question #1: I am looking for advice how to install these weird disk image files ?
I turned off my Time Capsule, re-connected the LinkSys to the cable modem and all my wireless functions work again, especially my printer. Sadly, no Time Capsule.
I read another discussion suggestion connecting both wireless devices together. I assume since I want to use Time Capsule that I set it up with the modem and connect the other router to it via one of the four ethernet connections. I didn't want to try this until I received further advice. I am hoping I can connect my LinkSys router to Time Capsule and use the printer through the LinkSys connection with all other computers on my network.
Question #2: How can I get my Time Capsule to find the Epson so I can use it again, or should I just use the LinkSys router connected to the printer?
Thank you in advance for help.

This sounds as if you are trying to use instructions that are more than 2 years old at this point, but you are using a new version of AirPort Utility Utility in Lion or Mountain Lion....which would not track or apply to the older instructions.
Can you confirm what operating system that you are using on the Mac that is being used to configure devices?
The new AirPort Express will connect directly to the Time Capsule using an Ethernet connection, correct?

  • I recently bought a new iMac as well as a wireless time capsule and have it connected how can I use this external drive as the location to store all my files for iTunes, or is this even possible?

New iMac user here, I recently bought a new iMac and Time capsule and have the whole network up and running now. I have connected another external HD to the time capsule as well and have a total of 3 TB of storage connected wireless to my new iMac. My question is can I use this location as the default location for iTunes?  I doubt I am gonna run out of room considering the iMac has 1 TB of storage already, but I'd prefer to keep my movies and music off the Mac to keep it running smoothly. If this is possibly, I'd like to do this with iPhoto as well.

I would advise against placing your iTunes library on a Time Capsule.
The Time Capsule is designed as a backup device and not for wireless streaming of video.
Before you do anything more, can I suggest you put into place a reliable, redundant backup strategy.
Unless you are prepared to risk loss of your iTunes library due to a hard drive failure, I would not put iTunes on the Time Capsule.
Leave your iTunes library on your iMac until such time as your internal drive is full. Backup to Time Capsule using Time Machine and create a clone of your internal iMac HD to your external drive.
That's my 2 cents worth. Others may have a different opinion.
