Is it possible to tranfer songs from iPod to computer? I was just wondering if my iPod is an adequate back up device for my iTunes files.

The best option is to get an external harddrive for backup. Imagine if your iPod got stolen and your computer crashed. Or your iPod malfunctions when trying to recover music.

When transferring songs onto my laptop from my Ipod, one song gets hung and stops the whole transfer. Does anyone know what to do?

You need to sign in to itunes, click the Store tab at the top and click "authorize this computer". now try transfering purchases.

For iTunes version 7 or later, then you can transfer purchased iTunes store music from the iPod to an authorized computer by using the "file/transfer purchases from iPod" menu. Note that the maximum of 5 authorized computers applies here.
For all other non purchased music (your own CDs etc) try this method which works on some Windows PCs.
Enable your iPod for disk use.

Open iTunes and select edit/preferences/advanced/general. Put a check mark in the box marked "copy files to iTunes music folder when adding to library" and also "keep iTunes music folder organized", then click 'ok'.
Connect the iPod whilst holding down the shift/ctrl keys to prevent any auto sync, and if you see the dialogue window asking if you want to sync to this itunes library, click 'no'.
Then go to file/add folder, open 'my computer', select your iPod and click 'ok'.
The music files should transfer to your iTunes.
If this doesn't work (and it may not because officially it's not supposed to), check out the instructions/suggestions here.

Much easier ways are to use one of the many 3rd party programs that copy music from the iPod to the computer.
One of the most recommended is Yamipod. This is a free program that transfers music from iPod back to the computer. However, it does not transfer playcounts/ratings etc.
Another free program is Pod Player.
SharePod is also freeware.
If you want to recover just the structure of playlists from the iPod (and not the actual song files themselves), there's iRepo for Windows. which I understand has this feature along with all the standard features for these programs.
There is also CopyTrans. This does preserve ratings/playcounts etc if those are important to you but this program is not free. It also supports video transfer.

i just bought a new macbook and proceeded to consolidate my files on itunes on my old pc. i then put that folder on an external drive which i plugged into my mac. unfortunately, it didn't seem to accept the .tmp files or the .xml file.
once i plugged it back into my pc, it showed me that i only had a few music files instead of them all.
so i ended up losing a lot of music.
most of my music is on my ipod...is there a way to get the music on my ipod to itunes without deleting anything?

No Playlists, or Ratings, Last Played, & Play Count attributes will be transferred from the iPod to iTunes using this method.
If you have problems with seeing the iPod within 'My Computer', try again switching your update method to 'manual', detach the iPod, then reconnect the iPod to the PC.
After recovering your Library, strongly consider developing a thorough and frequent backup strategy for just this type of situation (and many other potential disasters).
You need at least two full sets of your music, not including what is on the iPod:
-- One full set on the PC within iTunes (on internal HD or ExHD)
-- One full set on an separate external backup medium (CD/DVD/ExHD/other)
-- One (full or partial) set on the iPod
Music files on just the iPod and only one other medium is not considered having any backup.
If you cannot store your complete music files on the computer’s internal HD, then create and maintain at least two external sets (any multiple combinations of ExHDs, DVDs, CDs).
Backup both the music files and the Library database file (iTunes Library.itl). What are the iTunes Library files?

My hard drive crashed and won't be able to backup all my music/songs that are not purchased from iTunes. How would I transfer all the songs from my iPod to my new hard drive (PC)? Is there any possibility?

Be very careful when connecting an iPod full of music to an empty iTunes library.There is very real risk of permanently losing all the music.
To prevent auto sync, before you connect the iPod go to the iTunes preferences and select "devices", then select "disable automatic syncing for iPhones and iPods".
An alternative method is to connect the iPod whilst holding down the 'control+shift' keys and do not let them go until your iPod appears in iTunes.
If you see a message that your iPod is associated with a different library and asks if you want to link to a new one, make sure you press "Cancel".
If you should click on "Erase and Sync" will erase all the content currently on your iPod and it will be replaced with the content of the iTunes library you just connected to.
When you've pressed cancel your iPod should appear in the iTunes source list under "devices" and allow you to change the update setting to manage the iPod content manually, and that will let you use your iPod for the time being without the risk of accidentally erasing the contents.
Then do any of the following to transfer your music from iPod back to the computer/iTunes.

I'm in a huge bind, I recently had to reformat my hard-drive and lost all of my songs, but I updated my touch before the format and now that is the only way possible to get those songs back onto my computer. I know the touch cannot be disk enabled so I'm just trying to see if I am totally screwed on this. Does anyone know any possible way to tranfer these songs from the touch to my laptop? Please help!

Putting songs from iPod onto computer?

I got my iPod and i downloaded songs off itunes and once i imported them i put them on my iPod i deleted them off.
Now i want to put songs back onto my computer so i can put them on cds? Can i take them off the ipod and put them on my computer? Please help me and thank you.

iTunes opened and i accidently clicked automatically update songs... and it deleted off a grip of songs from my iPod.... all my tight stuff... can I get it back?

I have some music on my work computer that I downloaded onto my new ipod. When I get home to my computer, can I load these songs onto my home computer off of the ipod?

hi, my computer recently crashed, and deleted all of my songs from itunes. they are not in itunes or my "my computer" drive. all of the songs still are, however, on my ipod. If your iPod is set to update automatically take care when connecting back to your computer and an empty iTunes. You will get a message that your iPod is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press "Cancel". Pressing "Erase and Sync" will irretrievably remove all songs from your iPod. Your iPod should appear in the iTunes source list from where you can change the update setting to manual and use your iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it. Check the "manually manage music and videos" box in Summary then press the Apply button. Don't uncheck Sync Music it will be unchecked by default when you choose the manual setting: Managing content manually on iPod
You can also use a keyboard command to prevent your iPod auto-syncing with iTunes. While connecting the iPod to the computer on Windows with iTunes 7 installed hold down the Control and Alt keys (or Shift + Ctrl keys in older versions). This will stop the iPod from auto-syncing with iTunes and the iPod will appear in the source list. Wait until you are sure the iPod has mounted, and that it will not auto sync and then you can let the keys go. This may take between 20 to 30 seconds depending on your computer: iTunes 7 Keyboard Shortcuts for Windows
Whichever of these retrieval methods you choose, keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync again. I would also advise that you get yourself an external hard drive and back your stuff up in case you have problems again. External drives are comparatively inexpensive these days and you can get loads of storage for a reasonable outlay.

My computer recently got erased and I had to reinstall everything. Needless to say, I had songs on my computer before (not purchased from iTunes) that are on my iPod. I cannot for the life of me get those songs back onto my computer. Any assistance appreciated.
