Is it possible to transfer library information such as play counts, ratings

I've learned how to transfer my music files to a new PC, but is it possible to also transfer library info such as play counts and ratings? I am moving my music from an old XP system to a Vista system. I would like to keep all my play counts, ratings etc if possible. I believe I can copy the library file but will it be a problem if the path is different (in XP it's My Documents/My Music where in Vista it's Documents/Music without the "My"). Any help would be greatly appreciated!

There are numerous posts about this in the forum. Here is an Apple article decribing how to do it using an iPod, but the method is essentially the same using an external HD.

is it possible to view information such as play count on Artist view in itunes 11?

There is no column view for the artist tab in iTunes 11. The songs are chunked up by album, no option for list view, let alone column chooser. Also, everything under view > column browser is grayed out.

  • I want to transfer my itunes music from my old laptop to my new one but I want to also preserve the library data such as play count, date added etc.

The thing is, my itunes media folder where the .itl and .xml files are located are different from where my actual music folder is located (on my desktop), but my itunes library is still managed by itunes so I'm not sure how to go about it because I can't just simply copy the whole itunes folder because I have two seperate ones

There are multiple threads and documents on how to accomplish this.  Was a search of the forums or your favorite search engine done before posting this common issue?
The library files and media files being in different locations is a minor issue.. same basic concept still applies.  Move the ENTIRE iTunes folder (and any media folders) to the new computer from the old computer.

  • Library transfer - hasn't retained play counts, ratings etc.

Recently got a new laptop, and tried to transfer my iTunes library to it. I followed a guide to do it and still keep all my play counts and song ratings etc. but it hasn't worked. I've got the xml and library files still, so can anyone tell me what i need to do to fix it?

Assuming you have a default installation of iTunes, you need to backup the iTunes folder in Music with all its sub folders.
But I Assume you will be backing up all your data including the Music folder, so that should get it.
When you get your PC back, install iTunes, then drag the iTunes folder out of music to the desktop. Then copy the iTunes folder from backup into your Music folder so it replaces the one you dragged out.
You may need to adjust the permissions on your iTunes folder so that your account and SYSTEM have full control.

  • Understanding Battery Information such as Cycle Count

What is the cycle count and what is an acceptable number?
My white MacBook has a count of 135 and runs perfectly for about 4-5 hours. No complaints. But the PowerBook I'm working on has a cycle count of 432 and it lasts less than an hour.
What is the Full Charged Capacity mean?
Once again I'm going to compare the 2 machines in front of me:
    White MacBook 5072 mAh
    PowerBook 12-in 276 mAh
    Different numbers for different batteries?
Is a Powerbook's battery cycle count differnt than say a MacBook Pro?

Hi, YGP. Apple says a properly maintained Powerbook battery should retain 80% of its original full charge capacity after 300 charge/discharge cycles. A great many Powerbook batteries aren't properly maintained and lose capacity faster. And a good many Powerbook batteries, especially ones that were issued under the battery replacement program of a couple of years ago, have proven to be defective and lost capacity much faster than that.
A PB battery's capacity diminishes with its cycle count, its chronological age, and any kind of mistreatment: exposure to high temperatures; failure to cycle it at least every couple of weeks; leaving it discharged for more than a few days; leaving it unused for more than a month in any state of charge.
    http://www.apple.com/batteries/notebooks.html
With 432 cycles under its belt and a full charge capacity of 276 mAh (less than 10% of its original capacity), your Powerbook's battery is due, if not overdue, to be replaced. If you're still getting anything close to an hour out of it, it has served you extremely well and earned its retirement.

  • Backing up Library/Play Count/Ratings in 6.0.4.2

I've looked through the forums trying to find out which file I should be backing up, and I found a thread talking about the iTunes Music Library.itl and .xml files.
Trouble is, with iTunes 6.0.4, these files don't seem to exist.
Which file in the 6.0.4 structure am I supposed to backup?
    Thanks for the help!

Those are indeed the files you need to be backing up.
    The default folder is here
    C:\Documents and Settings\username\My Documents\My Music\iTunes
If the ITL and XML file aren't there, then do a Start > Search > For files or folder named > itunes
Because you must have set up iTunes to put them somewhere else.
What are the iTunes library files?

  • Rebuild library, but keep play counts?

My large library has been working great.  It is kept on the internal drive.  The problem is none of my music is showing up in the media browser of an open dialogue box on any Apple apps (mail, iphoto, etc) and most 3rd party apps.  It has been suggested I rebuild the library, which is done by trashing 2 files, iTunes library and the XML file.  I hesitate to do this because my gut feeling tells me this will delete metadata, such as play counts.  I would really like to keep my play counts, as I do use them in smart playlists?  Any thoughts?  Thanks.

I don't know if the media browser uses it, but the XML file is provided for third party programs as a way of querying the iTunes database. The name of the XML file is iTunes Music Library.xml if your library is in the standard location of the user's Music folder. If you relocate the library somewhere else the XML file is iTunes Library.xml. Perhaps there is an empty non-updating file in one location and media browser isn't watching the correct one. Or it could be something else entirely. The XML file is safe to delete however, so it's worth a shot if you haven't already tried it. Trashing the library file and rebuilding from the XML is another issue as certain metadata (date added for example) will be lost with that method.

Possible yes. Something you would want to do? Not likely.
Music bought from the iTunes store is only licensed to the Apple ID that bought it. The other iPhone has no right to play it, and as such it would require your Apple ID and Password on said Phone to be able to play. Are you willing to do that?
It would also be illegal, and akin to piracy.
You will also overwrite any other music they may have in their iPhone and replace it with yours.

If you're asking if you can import video fror the iOS Videos app to iOS iMovie, the answer is no. You can only import what is in the camera roll.

  • Is it possible to transfer my iMovie library to an external hard drive?

I have just noticed that my fairly new iMac computer's hard drive is almost completely full.
Is it possible to transfer my iMovie library to an external hard drive (that I have plugged constantly into my iMac computer), and still have full functionality of all of my imported movie files in iMovie?

Hi - was searching for something else when I came across this post. This is possible, used to do it myself prior to buying my new iMac. Just be sure to move the entire "iTunes Library" folder out as is. The next time you open iTunes a pop up should appear asking you to find/pick your library (just browse to find it for the system). The same principle will work with iPhoto. Alternatively, I believe if you hold the COMMAND key when selecting the application on the dock it will open a window asking you to select the library you want to open. This way comes in handy when you want to keep two separate libraries (i.e. for really old pictures).
Please confirm it worked for you... would love to know I was of help.

Is it possible to transfer my iPhoto library to an external hard drive (that I have plugged constantly into my iMac computer), and still have full functionality of all parts of iPhoto e.g. Faces, etc.?

    Hey TD,
After much reading in these posts and others you seem to be the guru on this topic. I recently bought a 1tb buffalo link station pro NAS (Network Attached Storage) drive that I copied my iphoto library to as described in previous post. I was then able to tell iphoto where the new library was, however when iphoto opens where the pic thumbnails should be are little dotted line boxes and when I scroll the mouse the pics then show up (instead of the dotted boxes) but then they slowly disappear back to dotted boxes. However if I double click on a dotted box the pic comes up normal in screen view.........any thoughts on why the dotted boxes and can't view the pics as thumbnails

    'fraid not.
the only was there may be a way would be to remove the HDD from the device (invalidating the warranty in the process), but even then it would be hit and miss.
anything purchased direct from the appletv can be sync'd back across, but i have a feeling that is not what you are talking about.
