Is it possible to transfer my iMovie library to an external hard drive?

I have just noticed that my fairly new iMac computer's hard drive is almost completely full.
Is it possible to transfer my iMovie library to an external hard drive (that I have plugged constantly into my iMac computer), and still have full functionality of all of my imported movie files in iMovie?

Hi - was searching for something else when I came across this post. This is possible, used to do it myself prior to buying my new iMac. Just be sure to move the entire "iTunes Library" folder out as is. The next time you open iTunes a pop up should appear asking you to find/pick your library (just browse to find it for the system). The same principle will work with iPhoto. Alternatively, I believe if you hold the COMMAND key when selecting the application on the dock it will open a window asking you to select the library you want to open. This way comes in handy when you want to keep two separate libraries (i.e. for really old pictures).
Please confirm it worked for you... would love to know I was of help.

    Hey TD,
After much reading in these posts and others you seem to be the guru on this topic. I recently bought a 1tb buffalo link station pro NAS (Network Attached Storage) drive that I copied my iphoto library to as described in previous post. I was then able to tell iphoto where the new library was, however when iphoto opens where the pic thumbnails should be are little dotted line boxes and when I scroll the mouse the pics then show up (instead of the dotted boxes) but then they slowly disappear back to dotted boxes. However if I double click on a dotted box the pic comes up normal in screen view.........any thoughts on why the dotted boxes and can't view the pics as thumbnails

  • How do you transfer your itunes library from an external hard drive?

I've just bought a new internal hard drive for my macbook because I've run out of space. I'm planning on putting my itunes library on an external hard drive then putting it on the new internal hard drive... but i have no idea what the best way to do that is, since it isn't just the files that are important, my playlists and all the changes to song names need to stay intact. and also i'm gonna put snow leopard on the new hard drive if that makes any difference?
Hope some one can help me find the best way!
    peacexx

I have much the same problem. I have my iTunes files on an 80GB external drive along with my iPhoto files. Currently, my MacBook Air sees and operates from the iTunes setup on the 80GB drive. To provide more space to handle these files I got a 500GB portable external drive. Now I want to bring the iTunes files back into my MBA and, when complete, put them out on the 500GB drive from which I'll operate my iTunes. This might be simpler if the MBA had two USB2 ports instead of one. I've tried the method noted in "Transferring Your iTunes Library" (http://www.ilounge.com/index.php/articles/comments/moving-your-itunes-library-to -a-new-hard-drive/), but couldn't seem to get the 80GB files back to the MBA such that iTunes would see them there. (I copied the files over, but the link's broken.) Ideas?
    Thanks in advance

  • Is it possible to run my iTunes library from an external hard drive?

As of right now my iTunes library is rapidly out growing my mac's capacity i have 120GB hard drive and am now down to about 20GB of storage due to my ever so growing iTunes library. Is it possible to transfer my entire library and run it off an external hard drive so i can free up space on my mac?

    Hi Tnarduzzi,
I just bought a new imac (after having my old G4 Mirror door finally give out), and I am looking to access my music folder from an external HD to this new computer.
I have already set my preferences in the iTunes advanced tab to select the external drive and folder as my "itunes library" but nothing in my music folder appeared when I did that.
I've done as you listed below (to choose library) but when I chose the library, it said "An itunes library file could not be found in folder..."
The folder I am trying to access is an iTunes Library I once had on my internal hd, but moved to an external drive.
What seems to work is going to Edit and then clicking "add to library." Is this another correct way to access my music from the external drive, while keeping all changes (ie addition and changes to library) off the internal drive?
Are updates, addition, etc really going to the external, or am I working with two different libraries (external and internal) but I don't know it?
Looking forward to hearing from you or anyone who can shed light for me.
    Thanks!

  • I am trying to transfer my iTunes library via an external hard drive. It is copying the songs twice. What am I doing wrong???

I am trying to transfer my iTunes library to a new computer via external hard drive. When I open iTunes on my new Windows 7 computer, after I have followed the tutorial on the website, I get an additional promt to "scan fror media". All the songs are copying twice. I have uninstalled the program twice and tried again with the same result. What am I doing wrong?

Thank you for your response. I have done this...when I open the iTunes folder copied from my old computer, each song appears only once. When I open iTunes each song appears twice. Should I uninstall the iTunes folder from my old computer and reinstall it? It make no sense that I have 2 of everything in iTunes. Thank you for responding - I really appreciate it, as I don't want to have to delete each duplicate song

  • How Do I transfer my iTunes library to an External Hard Drive?

Im new here so Im not sure where to post this. I have a 5G 60GB Ipod video and Im trying to get my iTunes onto this external hard drive I bought, that way, all my files are backed up and I can transfer them to my laptop. I have about 2000 songs, 15 videos, and 4 games. How do I transfer all that onto my hard drive without losing anything? And is there anyway to keep my playlists, song information, date added, ratings, and that stuff?

  • HT1296 How do I transfer my music library from my external hard drive to my new PC?

I saved all my music to an external hard drive so that it could be moved to my new PC.  All my song titles are showing up on the new PC, but whenever I try to play something, it says the file cannot be found.  If I plug the HD in, it will play the music.  As soon as I unplug the HD, I can no longer play anything.  My music library includes both items purchased from iTunes and music I added from CDs I own.  Please advise.  Thanks!

you moved your music to an E-HD and connect it to a new computer
ahdn when you play something it will only play when the e-hd is connected ?
if so yeah sure thats the whole point
if you want it on the new computer first copy the music to the new computers hd
and then add it to itunes
some of us wish to move our media to NAS's to save storage on our computers
so if itunes would force the media added to the local hd of the computer we would become very upset
though itunes does have settings to auto move added media to the local hd

How do I transfer my iphoto library to an external hard drive. Dragging it does not seem to work.

Erasing the drive won't affect the content of the iPhoto library. If you don't want to reformat that drive, buy another.
Even if you do install software which enables the Mac to write to NTFS drives, the volume containing an iPhoto library needs to be formatted as Mac OS Extended.

  • Storing my library on an external hard drive

I have a computer with a tiny hard drive that's running out of space for my iTunes library. Is it possible to use an external hard drive to store my music and video in? and if it is, which HD would you reccomend? I only have a 30 GB iPod so I dont need anything too roomy. Thanks for the help

It is possible to store your iTunes library on an external hard drive, assuming you have at least 2 USB ports on your computer.
In terms of which drive to purchase, that's pretty much up to you. You might want to stop in at a computer or office supply store (Best Buy, Staples) and see what they have. You might also want to look into the warranties offered by the manufacturer of the drive.

  • I have two apple id's one from my old laptop and one from my iPhone. I saved my iTunes library to my external hard drive and then tried to transfer it to my iMac. My music skips like a scratched cd now and I can't add any to my iPhone. Help please!

I have two apple id's one from my old laptop and one from my iPhone. I saved my iTunes library to my external hard drive right before my old mac laptop died and then tried to transfer it to my new iMac. Now when I try to play my old music it skips like a scratched cd. Also, now I can't add any music to my iPhone unless it was purchased recently through itunes and downloaded through icloud. I tried to "Organize" my library in hopes of correcting the problem but my iMac just ejects my external harddrive part way through. Please help!

    Ejects the harddrive?
Of what did your old Mac die?
It sounds to me like you have some file corruption somewhere.  Either in the transfer of your library to the external or the external itself is flaky if it keeps ejecting.
